I know some people were experiencing problems logging in or staying logged in - I'm hoping this upgrade took care of that. Please let me know if it didn't.

Also I'm trying out a new IRC chat - haven't gotten it completely figured out and it doesn't have a "who's in chat" function :banghead

Please give me feedback on that as well - is the lack of "who's there?" going to prevent you from chatting?

At first I was wondering why I can't copy and post smilies from the More Smilies page like I always do, but I found out that the Smiley will appear in the post when you click on the icon there. I'm not sure if that was apart of the previous version but it works better now.

Um, how do I log out? do I just leave?

Leave chat? yeah, just close the window, or click "disconnect".

Sorry, I meant logout of the Sideshow Collectors forum it's self. I usually just hit the logout button, but that's gone now. So I guess I just leave.

As far as chat goes, if I see that there is someone in there, I am more likely to enter. I don't need to know who per se.

Congrats to Dave for the changes to the board, the chat room looks alot better & a brilliant idea of the multiple options for the chat room including the mirc link  As I said brilliant managerial decision to switch to IRC (even if you did take some persuading :D )

Dave kudos on making the chat change. I really like the irc chat better. Definitely works better when there is a lot of traffic like there was during Spooktacular. And I get to use mIRC, I have gotten used to it.

Not sure if this is the right place to post but the forum options have gone?!

Usualy at the top of a part of this forum, there would be an idex of where you are: 'Gerneral, Lord of the Rings' etc.

But it's gone. I now have to use my arrow keys to go back to the forum or to change what forum I'm in.

Maybe it's just me.

Just letting you know.

Further to the above Dave,

1. IRC seems OK.

2. The list of peeps in chat has disappeared, dunno if this is fixable???

3. The "Logout" dropdown has gone from the main menu.

4. I still can't login automatically, despite having cookies set to "accept" and having my login details in stored Firefox Password Manager.

Other than that, it looks good :google:D:banana

Congratulations on the change for the chat Dave! :joy I'm thrilled to see the options that you have made availabe to all for it. While the list of who was in the chatroom was nice, remember, we didn't have that over on ez. We did know how many were in the chatroom, but not who. All the links work for me flawlessly now. So, everyone get busy and download mirc! See you all in the chatroom! :banana

Dave, I really enjoy the IRC chat! ;)

Regarding the 'Who is online', I do think it was nice to know and it is something I'm going to be making a script for soon. But, this past week I've stayed in the chat 24/7 and maybe 2-3 people have joined in total. I think the Who is Online also contributes to less people online if users see that no one/only one person is in the chat. Since the chat is now on a network of channels with other Tolkien websites I think the channel will be active 24/7, thus no one needs to know if its active or not because it always will be.

Also coming up the North East Tolkien Society will be having a guest chat on the server and so will ardapost.com (the main Lord of the Rings Online fan site) so stay tuned for that.

If you guys have any trouble connecting, or any comments/suggestions about the site or want help installing mIRC on your computer, just let me know and I'd be glad to help.

Great job dave!

Thanks for listing all of the forums in the "Site Navigation" box on the home page. Saves me a couple of clicks when navigating to a forum from there. But, I miss the (for example) "Discussion Forums>General Movie/TV" links that used to appear at the top of posts.

Kicked the tires of the IRC chat, albeit very briefly, and didn't come across any apparent problems.

What's not working for me in Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) using Safari 1.3.1 and Firefox 1:

I can't log-out. Quitting my browser resets the User Name and Password fields, but my name is still listed in the "Online Users" box. If I go to one of the forums, then click "Home" on the nav bar, The "Welcome FrankenFan" salutation appears, but the "Log-out" button is gone.

The contextual menus for Chat, Search, Quick Links, Thread Tools, etc., sometimes do not drop down. I can't consistently repeat this behavior, as it varies from thread-to-thread and forum-to-forum. At the moment, I'm not able to access any of the menus in this thread.

Dave, thanks for all the work you continue put into this board and, for establishing this community in the first place.

The top of all the forums, called the "navbar" is in flux at the moment. The "where you are" in that area called "breadcrumbs" will be back.

The chat is completely different and the "who's in chat" is not available for IRC chat and is the main reason I'm so against it in the first place. But I got too many complaints about the Flashchat. This is essentially the same as Sideshow's chat, although it carries over your board name so you don't have to sign in.

Perhaps there is a module out there that will show a number or names of who's in chat that I can eventually install.

As for not staying logged in - anyone who is still having this problem please email or PM me the details - operating system, browser, if you bookmarked the home page or a forum page.

Okay, the upgrade is really complete and this is how it's going to be for a while.

I'm still looking for a way to show who/how many are in chat, but for now you'll just have to enter and see.

If you happen to say damn or the like in general conversation will this chat "blank" it or do you just find yourself booted? I see everyone else likes this format so I'll hope for the best. I'm not a big chatter but did find grasping the old chat easier albeit lag ridden. I've tried a couple of times to maneuver the new one but seem to lock right up and then just close out.

Hyarion said he'll try and figure it out with you, but just so I know - what OS and browser are you using?

Also the censorbot is not as aggressive as it was in the main channel.

I don't know about this mirc thing. I downloaded the software and it is telling me I have one month trial before I have to pay $20. If that is the case it sucks. Also I dont know how to use it. It certainly doesnt seem to be as user friendly as Ez or the last version we were using, that lagged, where all you had to do was click, and you were in and away. I take it on faith that it is better. Maybe after I get used to it. Is there a user manual somewhere?

I remember having trouble understanding how or what use it was to me to connect to Tolkien or other chats. All I want is to chat to members here and it seems to be difficult and over complicated. I like ez board best. I bet that gets a reaction. Hahahaha. Yeah, well I don't want fancy features I just want to click and type. Just like I dont want a mobile phone that takes pics. I just want to dial and talk. I don't have a mobile and may forego chat if it proves too difficult.

Darklord Dave

creech - ignore the Mirc options - just use the first 2 options under "chat" that will connect you to the dedicated SSF chat channel.

Thanks Dave. As usual you have to hold my hand, and as usual, somehow, I always find the most difficult route. It's not just here either. Happens in all aspects of my life. :lightnin

No rumours people. I was just using a metaphor. Not that there's anything wrong with that. People use metaphors all the time.

LOL, you say that like I should know what an OS is? :google
Glad though that I won't get booted in mid heated discussion :)
I believe my AOL browses thru Internet Explorer.
Like Creech, I preferred the last version, even with the lag, but as I am more the casual chatter [and with this am probably likely to stay that way] what benefits the masses I guess is better.

Not sure where else to post this question, so I'll try here....

I'm having trouble posting comments in all caps.. For instance, if I were to type:

I LOVE CHEESE!

When I press the 'submit reply' button it shows up as "I Love Cheese!" in the thread. Why is this? It won't let me edit it back to all caps either, I've tried. Any thoughts?

Darklord Dave
11-10-2005, 07:36 PM
yep, it's supposed to work that way to stop newbies from capslocking us to death.

I'll see what I can do.

But do you really love cheese that much?

Andy Bergholtz
11-10-2005, 07:38 PM
Ah ok.... I guess I can live without capslocking... I'm such a dork. :) Small price to pay to keep the newbs from goin' crazy with it.

Don't worry about fixing it, at least not on my account.

Darklord Dave

I'm sometimes not staying logged in on the board. Occasionally I'll go away and do something for a few minutes and come back to post to find I'm logged out.
Is there a time limit to stay active before you get logged out? Is there a way I can change this limit or is it something that's a standard?

This is something that was a problem before the upgrade. I myself find that I cannot log out. Very strange. I'll look into it.

I've notice yesterday and again today that the site is logging me off automatically. I'm still able to use my personal Forum functions, i.e., Mark Forum as Read ("Welcome, Zoomaround" is listed on the top left corner) but when I return to the Home page, I'm logged off. I logged out yesterday by using the log off function at the bottom of a forum page.

Is it me or is there a problem with the Home page?

Thanks,

Frances

Dave, something strange is happening here today. Whenever I log in, the lay out of the site totally freaks out: The Sideshow header with all the little images is in place, but all the rest moved about 15 cm to the right... The "Welcome Alice Adrenochrome" box (normally right under the Sideshow header), now is totally on the left, somewhere in the middle of the page... All of the clickable text is now white, and therefore hardly readable on the white (or nearly white) background. I'm using Internet Explorer on a Mac. Any ideas for a solution?

FrankenFan

Alice:

I opened the board in Explorer on my Mac, but apart from the color background tile not displaying — that is why you are seeing a white background on the page — I did not experience any of the other display problems you describe.

I'd suggest switching browsers to Safari or Firefox. Since Microsoft abandoned developement of Explorer for the Mac, it's really not up to snuff these days.

Safari:

Firefox:

Thanks FrankenFan. I also use Safari. It's just annoying having to switch between browsers (you know, some things don't work here, other things don't work there...). Apparently Dave made some changes over night, that where not so good for my Explorer, because until yesterday, everything was fine.

I hear ya, Alice. It's the cold, hard reality of Mac marginalization.

Yea, the Googlemap thing may have screwed up the display on some browsers. I'll try and standardize it. However please tell me what time you were logging on, as I was having a bit of a problem getting it installed properly. I do need to know if it's STILL doing it.

But Mac users please keep me informed - I'll never know about display problems on the Mac unless you guys tell me.

Thanks a million for attending to this problem Dave, it's really nice of you. I can't really recall when exactly I logged on yesterday night, (I tend to log in quite often...), but as I logged in today, the problems where still there, and the symptoms where the same also.
The time:
On my Safari browser it said:
All times are GMT -7. The time now is 03:24 AM.
On my Explorer browser it said:
All times are GMT +1. The time now is 11:23 AM. This in my timezone.
Hope this helps to determine the exact time for you. Thanks again!

FrankenFan, maybe it get's sorted out after all! From the cold, into a warm place...

I am having the same problem as Zoom. I log on, go to make a post. By the time I press send I have been logged out and need to log back on. It has been this way for around 5 days, but today was the worst. I am using XP and IE ( sorry 'bout that) I have Firefox, so slap my butt. I will try using it and see if it makes a difference.

The same thing is happening with Firefox. Funny how it just started happening. It isn't an inconvenience because I just have to re-log in and my post gets posted. It would be more annoying if the post were lost.
