My snake eyes with Hottoys true-type body

Here are my 2 cents. I opened my SE during my break and I futz around with the figure for a about 15 minutes. I have mixed feelings about this figure. First off the joints on mine are a little loose but not enough were he cant hold a pose, the arm joint were nice and tight, but the hip and leg ones are kind of weak. The visor on mine came detached. Since its just attached with glue on the nose and the ears, the one on the nose unglued. The visor has an indentation were the nose fits in, so even though you can move the visor up and down the visor would stick out because of the nose. Also, the mask was crooked on mine, fortunately I was able to fix it once I removed the glue from the cloth which was glued on to the nose. The gear as everyone pointed out, is fantastic. What hurts the figure overall is the pro body. The shoulders are too small and because the skin suit has no definition with the neck ( its attached by the neck with glue) it makes it look worse. I think this could be a fantastic figure with a little modification. But at the price we are paying, it makes it a meh figure imo.
This is a tutorial for True-Type swap:

postcount=100)
This is very easy to do.
I used the True-Type caucasian edition so the chest area is bigger than showed in the tutorial.Besides, the Wear fits better and much tight, specially the shirt which outlines significantly the pectoral area, improves the shoulders and arms appearance.
My Snake Eyes looks more bulky and proportionate now compared with the prometheus body.
I strongly recommend to everyone the True-Type body Swap:D

But arent the arms on the TT longer than the Pro. I think this will make them look like the Jedi Luke's monkey arms.

No.
The arms look fine, besides if you swap the prometheus legs too (are a bit longer than the True-type) The overall body looks proportionate and natural.
I have the Sideshow Luke too and he looks like a monkey :monkey1 like you say but my Snake eyes not.

I keep hoping that something will pull me in the other direction, but based on the extra pics here, I'm becoming less and less interested in Snake. Despite the rave reviews from some of those who have had him in hand, he just looks. . .off somehow, and I'm not willing to spend $120 for him as he is, plus an extra $30-40 for a body to make him look better. If he were $80, I could probably justify it.

The hips on mine were really loose yesterday. If I swang him his legs would move independently from the hips with very little force on the swing. Today I tried to demostrate a co-worker how loose it was, but when I did it, to my surprise the legs were stiff and when I swang him, his legs moved with the hips. I even noticed that his hips, though still a little loose, were also a little tighter.
The only thing that is hard to put on him are the extra magazines. The holders are very tight and if you put too much pressure, you will rip the material, unfortunately I tore 2 of the six. The other thing is that the magazine that comes in the uzi, falls off very easily. The magazine is too thin, the same with the boot knife. I put tape to make it thicker so it wouldnt fall off.

I think we're all in agreement that the Joes are a bit overpriced.
IMO, they just need to fill out the arms a bit more. Snake Eyes dosen't have the effect of muscle mass in his biceps.

The True-type showed in the monkey depot tutorial is diferent than True-Types sold separately (caucasian, asia, caucasian special edition).Because these TT have biger and bulky chest part.
I did the swap using my TT Caucasian edition and my Snake Eyes looks much better and tight than showed in their pics besides the wear and gear are tighter even more than with the pro body.
The prometheus body is ok If the joints are fine, then the swap is,nt necessary at all..but personally I like much more my Snake Eyes now with the true-type overal appearance than with the pro body.

Its still tight, but still not as tight as I would like it be. The only reason I say this, is because I just got a SS harbinger pro body that Im going to use to replace the Buck body on Maul, and after comparing the 2, the harbinger one is still alot tighter than SE, well as far as the legs go.

Do you know that for a fact? It looked like a Caucasian TT to me. Except for color and extremely minor design variations of the chest (overall chest size is still relatively the same), every TrueType is identical. But that's all irrelevant as it wasn't the chest area that most of us didn't like. It was the way the shirt looked over the shrugging shoulders and skinnier, arms and the huge gap in between. That, the longer forearms and the overall lankiness. These issues would be inevitable on any TrueType, and are what made Snake Eyes look even worse than he did on the Pro:
http://www.monkeydepot.com/v/vspfiles/photos/photoreviews/2610/2610k.jpg
Some people will still prefer it over the Pro, just as people prefer Medicom over Sideshow, so to each their own I guess. :huh

Actually the pro is not bad at all. You can always pad the body. Im planning to pad the arms a little. Besides, why blow extra money for a body, that had shrugged shoulders and that will be taller. Then you would have to then change every G.i. Joe figure to a TT to keep height consistency.

Well, Snake's shoulders do look better in Onethousandoaks earlier pics. But those last pics, damn!!!
Yeah, the sideview on the pro is its downfall. But like I said with a little padding I think it could be fixed.
Bantar
03-16-2009, 03:48 PM
Actually the pro is not bad at all. You can always pad the body. Im planning to pad the arms a little. Besides, why blow extra money for a body, that had shrugged shoulders and that will be taller. Then you would have to then change every G.i. Joe figure to a TT to keep height consistency.
Actually, the height isn't very diferent:

I think the Battle Damaged T800 has a larger chest than the carded TT.
Was the chest what made Snake Eyes look like crap to you on the TT?

Yeah the broad shoulders & the arms on the True type look far better than Sideshow's prometheus. I will have to do the body swap as well,as the I wouldn't be able to live with my Snake Eye's shoulders & arms looking that pathetic! :lol
You do realize the bottom pic in your quote is Snake Eyes on the TrueType, don't you?

Isnt the TT as tall as a normal Buck? If so then if you compare Han Solo (normal Buck) to SE you can tell there is a big height difference. Besides look at the lenght of the arms on the TT compare to the Pro, they would look like monkey arms.

I don't know how tall the buck is, I don't have any but I think that you can look at the pic and see that there won't be big heigth diference between the joes on the true type and the joes on the pro :rotfl
And I think the diference in the arms is proportional to the diferences in the heigth.

I'm betting that "shoulders back" pose The Mike has him in is the same shoulder position Sideshow used for the Proto pics. ;)
The TT has proportionally longer arms because it's proportionally taller than the Pro.
Got it? Is it so hard to understand?
Well, not really, the length of the forearms are disproportionate to a human, so I'd agree with calling them: :monkey5 arms. :lol If you bend the arm up at the elbow, the wrist is actually about 1/4in higher than the shoulder when it should actually be level. When you put the peg in which represents the actual wrist, it's even more apparent. Add to that Snake Eyes' wrist bands and it's time to gear up for some custom drag marks on the knuckles. :p

Thanks for the compliments!
A couple of things to be warned of, the pouches are very fragile, they are nylon materal and so when you slide the additional clips into them the ends can snag and rip it, I did this on two pouches before getting it to slide in carefully, I used the end of a small paintbrush to expand the slot before putting in the clips but one of them has a pretty bad tear that isn't visible when displayed. All of the gear needs to be tightened and it slides upwards and downwards to get right with clips to lock it into place so that was a trying time. It took me about a half an hour to get them all where I wanted them and a couple I couldn't tighten.

Yes I am, doesn't seem like I can get Sideshow to do it. But if I stop by there (or call them when I can find the number) the hub will hold packages. Anything really big or that requires a signature I'll do that for. However, it slipped my mind on Snake so I have to wait until tomorrow to get him.

ok, it took an hour but I finally got the mags all in the pouches. all the pouches but 2 on mine are extraordinarily tight. once I got the hang of it they all went quickly, though. he's totally set up now and looks AMAZING. sideshow did a wonderful job! wish he had a little more muscle (his profile is pretty scrawny). maybe a TT swap down the road. quite honestly, out of the box it is the best 1/6 Sideshow figure I own.
for the mags, what worked for me is to first stick tweezers in the hole and ease them down as far as they would go then let them expand as I twist them around a bit and slide them out. this opens the pouch up more. then I get the mag to go in as far as I can without forcing it while using the tweezers to grab a hold of the rim of the pouch for tension while I push the mag in. this is when the corners of the magazine start catching on the nylon and showing through the outside. once this happens, I rotate the mag around its long axis and ease back and forth to get past the catch. then push again until the next catch and repeat. go slow and it should go in no sweat. :)
and since this is a photo thread here are a few quick snaps with all the gear in the box

just opened up mine... and he's got a damned bobbelhead. the rubber joit that connects the neck to the body is simply not tight enough. his neck will not hold a pose for anything. :()
Bh, just stripped him down and swapped in a spare truetype neck i had, fixed it, he's all better now, but still grrr.

Poo. I did not even think to look for screws, and I've already redressed him. OH, btw, I strongly enourage EVERYONE strip him down and redress him, he looks loads better after this. Not sure why, but it helps the look of the clothing. ALSO, getting the mags into the puiches with the pouches off his body was a ton easier.

so after futzing, undressing, and redressing, replacing the neck, etc, I'm finialy done. i might still swap out the lower arms from the harbinger, and do the ashakage tattoo, but that's for later.. the thing is, my camera's dead atm... so here's the pic of ANOTHER Snake, in the pose my snake eyes is in. anyone else wanna try to emulate it while my camera charges?

Fantastic figure, unlike the pro on my indy much better body :chew
Also I did have some loose joints but I did the technique of superglueing the loose parts and now I have the perfect tight body on him, can tackle any pose I want, trust me the pro body really works on him and definitely strip him down and redress him if you like, of course I had to because of the glueing technique.:D
But afterwards, I was really impressed on how his appearance was after the redress:horror
I wished he came with more open hands though, oh well
I have to admit, after the touch up painting, tightening, heating, reshaping and glossing I had to do on my ssc stormtrooper, I was really worried, thank god all snake needed was some minor joint tightens, and presto!!:banana
pics will be coming soon

The armor body has a bunch of screws. Off the top of my head, there are screws in the hips, shoulders, upper back and butt on the armor body. You can take that whole body apart easily and tighten it up.

Finally snapped a few pics of mine which arrived yesterday. Using my old camera, because I don't want to install new software for my new Nikon on this old computer. Will do an installation when I get my new Mac, and better pictures will emerge, I'm sure.
Spent about two hours putting all of Snake's gear in place and even though I was being very careful, still managed to pop open two of the six magazine pouches by using too much force. I used a "nice" pair of chopsticks with very taperred ends to open and loosen the pouches, but the stiching just would not hold on the two that broke. I also applied scotch tape to the ends of the magazines so they would slip in easier, allowing me to not have to sand them down.
My only major concern with my SE is that there is glue on his head covering just above his right ear where the visor must have been attached incorrectly. I can live with this small defect. Oh yeah, and I got a really loose pro too! But I don't really play with my figures too much, just pose them and use the stand, then display them, so thats alright too! The joints do seem to tighten themselves over time too.
Well, here are a few shots:
And I'm not a master poser:

See the glue above the visor attachment point?

Natural daylight:

I'm very happy to be on board for this line and plan on being a completionist, as long as the quality stays where it seems to be!

Got my Snake Eyes today and noticed that his left arm wouldn't go down to his side. I had to strip him down to see what the issue was.
Before:

After:
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/1192/p1020745c.jpg
The shoulder cup rotated down so you couldn't move his arm down to his side. It rotated back pretty easily but I figured I would share in case anyone else has an issue out of box.
Joints on mine are really tight except his hips are a little floppy which would be an easy fix on the armored body since you can take apart the groin area with a couple screws but you don't get that option on the pro.

Sideshow does have a reason for their production pics often looking bad. Its to give collectors and genuine idea of what the figure looks like direct from the box with virtually no 'futzing'.
Why Sideshow Freaks continue to piss themselves over Sideshow production pics I will never know.
