Ok, now I know that sometimes a certain character is very popular at a certain point and that various companies make various sculpts/toys/figures of it. When Lord of the Rings is in theaters, I wont be surprised to see alot of LOTR figures out there. But this seems just a plain rip-off!! Either SideShow has copied the design or Diamond has ripped off SideShow or there's someone out there who liked the idea and made a lot of variations on it or someone stole/borrowed his idea and made one too....I dunno.... But I would really like to know how the heck this is possible!!
Someone from the CH forums has been given a project by Art Asylum to make a Dr. Doom statue on a throne for Diamond to bring out. Now tell me this isnt almost the exact same thing as SideShow has just shown us!?
Seriously, someone should really try and explain why the heck this happens!
Btw, yes the sculpt does look excellent, so cudos to the sculptor Alterton!

I think this is to be expected expecially with comic characters. When collectors buy a statue of their favorite character, more often than not they are looking for an iconic pose of that character. Whenever we picture that particular character, a certain scene or pose comes to mind. Of course with most characters there may be more than 1 pose that comes to mind but there are usually a small number even then. With so many companies making collectibles, there is bound to be occasional of overlap on poses.
Keep in mind too, that with these comic characters based on actual comics as opposed to movies, the reference pics are usually from a certain cover. Most of the time the most sculpture inspiring covers are also from the most popular issue. So again, you can end up with some duplication. But even then they are usually not exact copies but have variations no matter how subtle.
Of course, having said all of this, I was really surprised at how closely the resemblance of the DST piece is to SS. On the other hand, this is a bonus for collectors. There are some on the StatueForum who like the SS pose but can't afford the PF price tag. So now that have a cheaper alternative.

I Agree With Oxbeard On Everything He Said But I also wanna say that There Were Numerous Doctor Doom In The Past Done By Other Company(bowen, Toybiz) And None Of Them Have Been Done In This Pose...therefore, I Think That Diamond Has Been Influenced By The Sideshow'sculpt Or Vice Versa....

Actually Toybiz did do something similar to this before Sideshow, go look at their Marvel Select Doctor Doom figure:
http://www.toymania.com/columns/spotlight/msdoompics.shtml
It's not Identical but it is Doom with a throne. It's an iconic image that is recurring in the Marvel Univ.
The Diamond statue will probably be at a different size then Sideshow's. Collectors like to have statues in relatively similar sizes, so the Sideshow 1/4 scale statue won't work in their collection.
It is very fishy, but I think Sideshow's mixed media 1/4 scale statues are a different license then something like 1/6 scale statues. So Diamond's statue might not conflict with Sideshow's license.
But I do think Diamond looked at the buzz and sellout of Sideshow's Doom and coped it to make a buck.

Doom sitting on his throne is a pretty common motif. Many drawings you see of him are the same way. But yes, this has alot to do with marketing I would think. Everybody wants a chunk of our collectible dollar. If people are abit gun shy about the SS price, this gives them an out. They still get a Doom piece at about half the price. Actually though, Alerton didn't copy SS here in any way, there was also a kit done by Alerton called "The Iron Dictator" done long before SS did theirs. As you can see, he knows his Doom! Looks like Doom got a chair upgrade. :D

Is that you comicboy?? Yes Alterton produced this pose before SS did. I can't see the problem as they are different scales.;)
