What's up with "This message is being moderated"?

I've noticed that almost every comment I leave on someone's profile over the last few days comes up with this phrase.

What's the deal?

Was this some recent change?

It was the only way I could turn off the visitor messages. People have been abusing it and I don't have time to visit every profile every day.

The main reason for that feature is, some sites have restrictions (minimum post count required) for users to use the PM system and in some cases to even start threads. So if you simply want to contact someone.. you either have to post up your "message" in a random thread which will likely result in your message being deleted and/or you getting Banned for spamming or you can spam the minimum required posts to use the PM system/Start New thread option.. which will REALLY get you Banned before you even have time to see the response. lol.

Also users have the option to disable both the PM and Visitor Message features. They also have the option of only allowing vistor messages from people on their "Friends" list. Not to mention like Nash pointed out, users can manually "soft" delete messages which Mods/Admins can still see (as proof if there's a spamming problem).
