I wonder how they padded out the body. Sure looks a hell of a lot better than SotD's Ed. Maybe up for pre-order in this week's newsletter??

Definitely only the most casual Godfather fan here, but there is no way I'm going to miss out on this one. I even love the way they've posed the cat to fit in with the film, rather than just have a generic one (although maybe the face sculpt on the cat is a little cartoony - hey, I've gotta find something to nit-pick on!)

The only thing I can nit is that the cat looks to be too small. More of a kitten. The pose for the cat isn't the one I would have chosen (more of the classic stroking the cat's back like every film villian does) but I am just thrilled they are including it. A definate purchase!

I'm actually really glad they didn't go that route, since Brando did really appear to be just playing with the cat rather than doing a Blofeld!
I agree with you though it's too kitten-ish. Not sure if that's the size or the slightly cutesy headsculpt (the kitten, not Brando. Brando is totally cutesy)

How can HT and Enterbay both have an official license for Godfather 1/6 scale figures, to be released 2nd Quarter 2009?
Maybe Enterbay have lost their license?
As for the figure, it isn't just great, it's a whole new era in the evolution of 1/6 scale figures - this is the first time ever that a major toy company has released a:
1. non pop culture
2. non 'hero' character
3. non 'wish I'd owned that as a seven year old'
...figure of such quality. Sure, there have been 'Oscar Goldman' style non-heroic characters, like HT's Jor-El or SSC's Q, but they're part of action franchises. There's never been anything like this before, where you're not going to pose it in action poses or wave it around in the air like it's flying (cough, Iron Man, cough). It's a poseable figure that's designed to be posed in non-action poses.
Basically, this is the death of PF...

it is a great figure. COMPLETELY disagree that no one has done characters like this before. every company has announced at least one character like this. i also think the godfather is about as pop culture as you can get. nearly every yahoo, chav and jeffrey knows about the godfather even if they haven't seen the film - it's everywhere!! and non hero characters are everywhere too.
rest assured, enterbay have not lost the license. they're still planning a release. although it's going to be hard to top this.

enterbay have done mr. bean. i don't think he's a hero. check medicom's product list - they've done loooooads of leftfield characters like ichi the killer, or basquiat or sweeney todd even. hot toys did prison break. sideshow did some weirder stuff in their earlier days like the historical characters.
ahh, ok i concede, you did say "of this quality". and you're right. this kicks a lot of arse and there hasn't been anything like it in this quality before.

It looks more gray/white than brown to me, but either way it's close enough.
And it looks like the rose on the figure is a little undersized but that's nothing.

From that screen cap, looks like the cat just needs to be a bit bigger to be perfect. That is how I plan on displaying mine. Who would have though I'd buy a figure sitting down and playing with a cat? :lol

Look at James Dean from Giant, or the newer James Dean. Look at the first Brando release. Of course, everything I just mentioned is part of popular culture, but the Godfather is probably a bigger part so its a moot point

Judging by both Enterbay and HT track record, HT got the advantage in their prototype to final product consistency, bang for buck (cause you know Enterbay is going to cost a bomb if it comes with the chair, cat, and glass), and better body.
The only advantage that I see Enterbay having is the 360 eyeball system (which makes all their figure wide-eye and the hairline unnatural like they are wearing a wig), and maybe better tailoring cause Enterbay do have really amazing tailoring when it comes to their costumes.

Here are some of the points touched on in the magazine.
1. Sideshow wanted to produce this figure but encountered a lot of difficulties. In the end Sideshow and Hot Toys decided to work together to provide the best product.
2. Figure will wear a fat suit "underwear" to give Don the correct body proportions (don't think it will be a rubber body though, I think it will be similar to the Jor-El figure).
3. Hot Toys did 4 sculpts before it was finally approved by Paramount.
4. Chances of seeing another variation of Don or other characters are not high.
5. Suit will be much more sophisticated compared with suits produced in the past.
6. The chair can revolve.
So I guess this is bad news for people hoping for an entire line of figures. Nothing set in stone though I guess.

I think this is a masterpiece of a sculpt, but I have a hunch that Enterbay is going to manage to top it. Call me crazy, but it's just a feeling. Especially considering their new artist Y.J. is sculpting it.
Hot Toys is still the king, I mean, how can you top this?!

Hmm, he's looking seriously shiny in some of those pics from Tommy Richardson, and I agree that the cat looks cartoony. But I am still definitely getting this.
So far it looks like ABC and CSC have the best prices on this, but I'm waiting to see Joe's prices before I go ahead and order through one of them.

Looking at the base of that chair I think I'll have to be a little gentle when posing him in it or revolving it.
But I can't wait to get him, definitely my most anticipated figure of the year unless Hot Toys announces a M-Icon Fred Astaire...which they'll never do.

I've collected action figures for all my life. at least 20 years. This is the greatest action figure/collectable figure of all time. In my opinion its revolutionary. There has never been anything up to this level before and I'm not sure how there could ever be anything better.

If he came with a pan of lasagna I'd be worried.
I don't believe the cat, of all things, will be a major sticking point for people to stop buying this awesome looking figure.

That's the kind of competition where we, the consumers, win. I'm sure they're looking at Hot Toys' version and thinking, "We gotta do something really special now!"
I think the bar has been set almost impossibly high here, but hey, if Enterbay manages to beat this Don with one of their own then that will be a figure for the ages!

Interesting to hear Hot Toys had to sculpt it 4 times before paramount approved. I hope that's just paramount being super picky on some little things and not a sign of HT slouching. Not every HT production will have studios screening the sculpts to perfection...

YJ Park is apparently an amazing sculptor. He is after all Arnie Kim mentor. Apparently, he was brought in a few times to improved on a few of Arnie Kim's work that wasn't up to scratch.
But is YJ Park even sculpting the Godfather? As far as I know, Enterbay got nothing else announced about their version of the Don other than they are doing one.

Incredible figure. Maybe an AL Pacino is in the works, but I doubt it. However, this might lead to an Al Pacino's Scarface figure for Hot Toys. Sideshow and a bunch of other companies have already done this figure. If Hot Toys does do it, Tony Montana is in good hands.

Exactly. It would be a sort of payback by giving them an exclusive. I think we all agree the Horse head would be a good exclusive as it would be a cool item to have, yet not important enough to be missed much as Vito was never directly connected to it.

Sideshow and Toy Hunters (HT's Brick and Mortar in HK) share their exclusives. If there will be one it'll appear in the window display over there before is ever announced here. That is the best indicator.

I know they work together but has HT ever done a Sideshow licensed product before this one?

No, no hellboy exclusives.
And if I recall, the PotA is also a Sideshow license leased out to HT. Again, no exclusive.

I want this figure now so bad.
I hope he'll come with a cool exclusive...how about a desk!!!:joy

I'm kind of pondering the idea of making a desk out of balsa wood or something along that line. It would not be screen accurate but it would make a pretty cool diorama. Maybe get a generic guy in a suit sitting across from the Don asking for a favor.:D

This sounds actually like a very good idea!
I hope I can squeeze this guy in, but in these times who knows. Already too much coming and Watchmen figures havnt even been announced. Ouch.

Don't you mean the Hot Toys one looks a little emaciated? You're not the only one to say this. What are people comparing it to when they say this? I think the Enterbay one follows the Brando jaw line better, giving it more of a lumpy look, as compared to the Hot Toys one, which has a straighter jaw line. At least it looks straighter in the below pic. Might be the angle.

Since those washed-out pics creecher posted show the eyes looking to the far right I'm calling it as yeah, they are moveable. The irises also look slightly too large which is what I seem to see on all their moving eyes too.

I fail to see how one unclear shot makes the Enterbay product better than the HT one. I'll wait for better pics before making that call.
I read on the HK boards that the eyes will be adjustable (without having the need for a removable hairpiece).

If the eyes can move, I wonder how to get access to them because the hair is sculpted as a whole with the face.
No big deal for me if they are fixed.
I think I already have made my choice ;-)

Good point and from looking at the only EB picture yeah it does look better than HT's. Still it has the advantage of having all of that shade, hiding most of the detail of the actual portrait.
We can make judgement on the HT's one so far because we can actually see the detail. Too early for me to say for sure as well.

I think it'll use the same technique as the 24 figures.

I may be in the minority but based on that brightened pic of the Enterbay one, I'm not liking the eyes at all. Will definitely need to see more and better pics of it, but so far I'm favoring the HT one.

So if Sideshow is only offering the exclusive version does that mean that other retailers like BBTS and CSC are getting theirs from another distributor?
No, it just means if you want the hat you have to order direct from Sideshow. Everyone else will get the regular edition, which will be without hat.
Phorpus
02-05-2009, 06:48 PM
No, I meant the regular edition.
Because those stores are expecting this in the 2nd quarter, and Sideshow's is coming in the 3rd. So is Sideshow going to send out the regular version to retailers earlier than the exclusive? And if Sideshow is distributing the regular version to stores why don't they have it on their site?
Or is the 2nd quarter when Hot Toys is releasing this overseas?
...or maybe I should just ask the store.
creecher
02-05-2009, 06:58 PM
Lots of questions. I can only guess that Sideshow will pass out the regular editions to the stores when they get them in. These Sideshow exclusive Hot Toys are just an arrangement between Sideshow and Hot Toys, though I dare say the Hot Toys V.I.P. members will probably also be getting this, so there may be a few pop up on ebay from Hong Kong. The exclusive, being a direct pre-order from which they will gain a reasonable estimate, as to how many figures they will supply, will likely come after the wave of regulars. Why they don't have it on their site is a question better fielded to them, via their customer enquiry form.
Hot Toys has it up for release in Q2, add to that the inevitable delay and it'd be closer to the truth to say Q3, and a month delay from then to get it to Sideshow and onward to whomever they're distributing it to.

Looks like HT have been listening to peoples concerns, here’s their newly modified version of the Don!
Changes are:
- head sculpture (More detailed hair and facial texture.)
- Hands (more like an old man’s hands)
- His beloved cat (newly sculpted and painted)
