I sure would love a PF Jack Sparrow though, that'd be a dream piece, especially if Trev sculpted it :drool
PF Jack Sparrow would be a must have. A 1/4 scale Aslan would be cool too. Disney distributes Miyazaki films in the US as well. It'd be cool to get a PF from a movie like Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away.

This is actually a great marketing move for Sideshow. Disney collectors are obsessive about their collection; my wife had alot of WDCC before we had kids and she would buy them as soon as they came out. This is a way for Sideshow to provide a higher end item for those collectors.

If this is for only the animated characters, I don't foresee much excitement for this line. Like somebody said, Disney collectors are hardcore, but most average comic/movie geeks could care less about Belle and Ariel. However, if the license leads to the creation of a Tron PF, it may be the greatest thing ever.

Yes, it is, just from an animated point of view.
However, I just though of something else, if this is a FULL possible Disney license, from memory, Disney own the Jim Henson company, so say it with me....

Disney just owns the Muppets. The Jim Henson Company still owns The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and Fraggle Rock. Which sucks becuase I want a Jareth PF.
Aren't they already selling/distributing animated disney stuff from other companies, to which they can't get rid of?
POTC was good, until they made a sequel. If GG,NECA,ect can't get rid of their sculpts/products, SS won't.

Yes, I'm expecting this to be about the animated films. No Pirates, no Pixar.
Actually the licensing means exactly that - just about anything that's a fully Disney production is possible. Anywhere from Snow White to Cap'n Jack with Buzz Lightyear thrown in for good measure.
Disney actually dumped the Narnia franchise today :(
It's being shopped around to other studios, so I'd guess that's a no-go.
They decided not to move forward with the 3rd film - but they still own the distribution rights to the first 2. However that was a co-production with Walden, so it's possible Narnia isn't under the umbrella.
And yes, I forgot about Jessica Rabbit, love a PF of her, Mulan would be cool too.

Could you just imagine a full 1/4 scale Beast, with full real fur, sculpted under body and face and then complete costume over the top.
Unfortunately I can also picture how complex and expensive it would be, but still.
I'm just a huge Disney animated feature fan, in fact I remember even sending in a product suggestion email for the likes of Ariel and Belle in PF format, so its sounding like just maybe I could get my wish.
Only down side is that this could really hurt the old bank balance.
Anyone sayin ''yawn'' at this obviously hasnt checked all the possibility of this annoucement.POTC obviously but theres so much more...I think its one of Sideshow's biggest announcement in years, bigger than anything SW or Marvel related...As a collectibles compagny this is something that gives them great exposure to be associated with a giant like Disney.Great announcement.

This announcement is awesome!! :rock
I can think of tons of characters that I'd buy as a PF.
NBX and POTC are defintely on the top of my list.
Who knows...this could possibly lead to other Disney lines in the future like dios and busts.

This is an un unusual road to take. The market is already flooded with POTC merchandise. And if this line has any legs at all where would someone display it all? I'm a huge fan of Disney stuff so I'm curious to see whats going to come out. I don't think I would care for the animated characters done in PF style. I much prefer the sculpts that are coming out from the WDCC. I have resisted buying even one of these as it would be a slippery slope to wanting all of them. This one in particular is all kinds of awesome:
http://cgi.ebay.com/WDCC-GENIE-IM-LOSING-TO-A-RUG-Aladdin-LTD-ED-RARE_W0QQitemZ110322015565QQihZ001QQcategoryZ15629 7QQcmdZViewItem
I've been tempted to buy the Tonner Davy Crockett because I figure maybe no one else will ever do one. SS could diffently win me over to this with a Dr. Syn, the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. I would also hope that SS hires some of the WDCC sculptors to do these pieces. If memory serves me correctly I believe that Tony Cipriano, Rueben Porcopio, and Kent Melton to name a few have all worked for Disney animation.

Doesn't Disney already sell large 1/4 scale "big figs" like the Jedi Mickey and these?
http://www.register123.com/event/profile/web/index.cfm?PKwebID=0x85786a607
I've seen these at the Disney parks for 150-175$, How much is a PF nowadays? 250-350$?
The Big Figures they sell are bigger than 1/4th Scale. Jessica Rabbit is around 23" tall.

The big figs are also more like maquettes than PF's because they are all sculpted. That works just fine for the non human characters (for some reason picturing a poly Donald with fabric clothing seems weird to me), but I think some of the more elaborate costumes like the Princesses with their ball gowns will be really awesome with cloth dresses. And yeah, those are going to cost a pretty penny if the dress is done right.

The Weta Narnia statues are selling for pennies on the dollar (and they already have an Aslan) so I'm going to say that Narnia being the property seems unlikely.
Not to mention (as I said in another thread) Disney dumped the Narnia franchise yesterday. It's being shopped to other studios.

Animated as in all animated, or animated as in non-human?
I think the classic non-humans, like Mickey and Donald Duck are better left all sculpted. But I guess it should be approached on a case by case basis. A felt texture on Mickey Mouse might work, but realistic feathers on Donald might not. The princesses can all use mixed media, if you can imagine the target audience buying those.
But either way this announcement is a big deal. Whether or not you care, Disney > everything else. A lot of non-freaks out there willing to shell out hundreds of dollars on this stuff. There were not enough high end Disney collectibles as far as I am aware (with most being more expensive than high-end).
The Drizzle
12-25-2008, 09:21 AM
They decided not to move forward with the 3rd film - but they still own the distribution rights to the first 2. However that was a co-production with Walden, so it's possible Narnia isn't under the umbrella.
Agreed- plus, with that choice yesterday as a "vote of no confidence" from Disney, I can't see them wanting SS to divert their attention to Narnia, espescially since the franchise may go on under another studio's banner.
I also bet Muppet related properties will be much later on (if ever) because the last few attempts at high-end Muppets merchandise fizzled out unceremoniously.
They will want their core properties and ongoing properties represented. My bet is the first year at least, Disney will want SS selling things that help promote current or upcoming entertainment releases. I'd look to see what's on "The Disney Vault's" upcoming DVD and BluRay release/rerelease schedules.
My guess is Disney wants "Classic Disney" to be the thrust of this line.
This seems like an attempt by SS to attract a new customer base to their business. We may still see some "geekworthy" releases, but I bet it's not the main thrust of the line. I'd put down money that you will see a "Sorcerer's Apprentice", Tinkerbell, or "Steamboat Willie" PF early on.

I'll almost bet you the characters themselves will be sculpted, but their clothes will be cloth. For instance, Donald will be sculpted, but his classic (and kinky) blue hat and sailor shirt will be cloth. Mickey will be sculpted, and his "Sorcerer's Apprentice" outfit will be cloth. You guys are thinking too complicated. Sideshow doesn't- they don't spend money where they don't have to.

Could you just imagine a full 1/4 scale Beast, with full real fur, sculpted under body and face and then complete costume over the top.
Unfortunately I can also picture how complex and expensive it would be, but still.
Which is why Sideshow won't do it. This is the company that keeps re-releasing the same old 1:6 Star Wars armor/parts molds because it's cost effective, rarely stepping up and making the risky figures that require new molds to be made. The upcoming Darth Vader is the 1st thing I would consider Sideshow taking a real risk at all. No Yoda, Bossk, Greedo, Chewbacca, droids, etc. It's all jedis, rebel soldiers, and troopers.
This is part of why I'm not surprised at this boring Disney announcement- it really wasn't for us, (though it will interest some of us) it is to attract a totally new customer base, so they have a larger base of people to sell to, and a better chance to weather the storm.
Oh, thank God. :o I've been worried all week that this was going to be something I couldn't live without.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what Sideshow does with these, however. Who knows? Maybe they'll come up with something that even I would like to display. (Jack Sparrow, anyone?)

Don't get me wrong- if I was running Sideshow, I would pursue this license as well, it makes perfect business sense. But as a toy geek, I could really care less- I don't see SS doing a lot of stuff aimed at us- it's going to be stuff for the classic Disney Collector crowd, to pull in that new business.

There is a tone of possibility with the Disney license. They have done a ton of work over the years and many films I've enjoyed watching. There are products I will be tempted to get depending on how they come out. I just think this was something better served for a newsletter announcement than a build up over the last several weeks.
Business wise its a great move as it will pull in a brand new set of folks who are all about Disney. I know I will make sure to tell my friends who are major Disney collectors.

So what exactly would constitute a big announcement like this if Disney doesn't qualify? Given Disney's legacy, Sideshow has quite a world of characters and movies to play around with. If we are talking starting from the days of Steamboat Willie and moving forward, this will be a major license for Sideshow for years to come with characters that appeal to a wide fan base.
I didn't expect this, but what Sideshow could potentially produce is really exciting.

Fairly. If it's not interesting to me its not gonna mean jack squat to me. Don't expect me to be excited for the Mousketeers. Would be different if I was on the selling side, I'm sure the company is excited, they have a right to be, it's probably a good new revenue stream, but to get me all hyped up just for some mainstream licensing victory is well, boring. To get me excited you have to announce something that I want.
Oh, and I'll take the lottery win over Disney.

Actually the licensing means exactly that - just about anything that's a fully Disney production is possible. Anywhere from Snow White to Cap'n Jack with Buzz Lightyear thrown in for good.
I'm not gonna argue, cause like I said..I know nothing of licensing arrangements. Just from my layperson perspective it seems monstrously expensive to have a deal that covers absolutely everything with a Disney sticker in front of the brand name. And, again..I'm no historian, but I don't recall seeing a lot of other companies with an all-encompassing license arrangement, and if it was a possibility I wonder why not.

Dosen't GG have the Pixar license? Like I said, if they (Sideshow) can't get rid of the Disney stuff they already have for distribution, they won't be able to move their own creations. Reason being, theres just waay to much Disney (main characters) out there as it is.

Gentle Giant's statues are only 12" at their tallest and consist of only polystone. Sideshow's license I believe is for Premium Format Statues, which are much bigger and are mixed media.

If they made a Davy Jones PF I think I'd crap my pants. While a quick letdown really thinking about how expansive of a license and how many different options there are its fairly interesting.
I also wonder...
What if they are possibly doing something for the newest Kingdom Hearts game?...Or would they need permission from Square-Enix?

The Rocketeer would be incredible, but I have feeling rather then take advantage of those great titles like 20,000 Leagues, were gonna get 25 Pirates of the Crap-a-bein Premiums of the same characters.

They would need the permission from Square-Enix but they aren't too selective, before Master Replicas went down in a blaze, they were planning an expansive Kingdom Hearts license with 1:1 pieces and statues, etc. So it proves that both Disney and Square-Enix would actually be up for it.

Espescially in this economy, we're not gonna get much of the cool geek stuff. It's gonna be Tinkerbelles and Mickeys and Snow Whites, etc. Bet you. "could be" won't get the cool stuff made. SS has a Star Wars license, it's expansive as well. I keep waiting for Yoda, Bossk, Greedo, and Chewie, and we keep getting Captain Antilles, scads of Lukes, Obis, Hans, and lots of prequel trilogy crap.

It's pretty unlikely that we'll get any of the animated characters. Disney already does them themselves, so there wouldn't be any point to turning that style over to Sideshow. Instead, we are likely to get the clothed humans from the million other Disney movies and television shows.
I'd drop $250 on either a Guy Williams Zorro, Fess Parker Davy Crockett, or a Patrick McGoohan Dr. Syn (the Scarecrow) in a heartbeat. I'd also happily take a PF of Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones or Barbossa.

For me, though, it is a yawn.
Not necessarily true - PotC and NBC is definitely aimed in our direction - there's a ton of stuff that's possible that could cross over and not just be for the traditional Disney animated character. Although a Mickey with faux fur and a Donald with feathers would be irresistible.

I just got home from being out of town and saw the big reveal. Not what I was expecting that's for sure, but if they make a Micky, Minnie and Donald PF, and especially a Jack Sparrow PF I probably wouldn't be able to resist. Aladdin would probably be sweet too. I doubt the Micky, Minnie and Donald would have actual fur or feathers though, I think fully sculpted as long as the clothes are real would work. And the Jack Sparrow likeness has to be pretty close to Johnny Depp or I'll be extremely ticked off!

With a few exceptions, I don't like the "everything is fine" Disney universe, so, this announcement is not of real interest to me. I'd like a Tron figure, although I don't see SSC making a PF from that movie. Same goes for "The Black Hole". I don't think PF's from that movie will happen.

I'm trying to stick with 12 inch so it would take something off the wall and very dear to get me to commit to a PF. Dr Syn would be one of those few characters that could change my mind. I loved Guy Williams as Zorro, but I'm already working on a custom 12 inch with the SFM John Robinson head. Like I mentioned earlier I'm tempted by the Tonner Davy Crockett, mainly because I can't image anyone else ever doing one in any scale. I think there is more than enough POTC merchandise out there. I can't see SS making anything that's going to eclipse what is already available. Plus you might get 2 or 3 different Jack Sparrows and a Davy Jones and then they would drop it. I'd rather see a good line of 12 inch figures with at least two or three characters from each of the following:
Black Hole
Tron
Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
Zorro
Davy Crockett
20.000 Leagues Under The Sea
POTC (only if they do Barbosa first)
Something else I'm wondering about. Doesn't SS already distribute licensed Disney Products from at least 4 other companies (Electric Tiki, WDCC, Tonner, and Medicom)? Seems odd that they would make an agreement to be a distributor and then start producing product that is in direct competition with those companies.
Seems odd that they would make an agreement to be a distributor and then start producing product that is in direct competition with those companies.
Medicom makes 12 inch SW and Indy figures and SSC still distributes them.
If Premium Format always means 1/4 scale then a lot of Disney PF's will be much smaller than a normal PF. Many classic Disney characters are only half the size of a normal human if that.

For me Premium Format means "mixed media" moreso than 1/4th. I think for the most part 1/4th has just been the most appropriate scale to do it in thus far.
I don't know if that really means thats where it has to be for something like Winnie the Pooh or Donald Duck or something. What is 1/1 size for some of those characters be anyway?

It just occured to me, if they make Woody and Buzz in 1/4 scale they would probably be 4 inches, give or take. :lol
I think non-human cartoon characters are about waist high (going off memory of Roger Rabbit and Mickey shaking hands with Stowkowski in Fantasia, as well as the Partners statue at Disney) with a little variation like Donald and Minnie being a tad shorter than Mickey, and Goofy being a bit taller. Of course there are exceptions there as well because comparing Baloo and Mowgli I'd say Baloo is about regular size for a bear. Of course at the parks they are all human sized (short ones at least) so they could easily base them on that size and they would be about the size of regular PF's. But the proportions may come out looking odd when displayed with human PF's (such as the Princesses).

This line could really be crazy.
If I was SSC and this license was truly all encompassing like some of you guys have stated, I'd be hiring people left and right, building a freaking factory myself, etc.
I'd be on top of issuing product bam bam bam bam bam.
Sideshow hasn't struck me as that kind of company. They announce licenses and they kinda take a while to warm up and even then releases come slowly or they just do one and let the line end sometimes.
They could really milk this mouse dry if they chose.
But where do you begin? Animated fairy tale movies (Snow White)? Iconic Disney characters (Mickey and Donald)? Live action classics (Polyanna)? Live action recent films (POTC)?
I have to imagine they have defined focus.

I don't get some people's reactions that if it's not interesting to us, it's not interesting at all. SS already has most of our money on any of the other licenses like LOTR, SW, Marvel, so why would they want us to allocate that same money to another license? You can only spend a dollar once.
Not speaking for everyone of course, but I think a lot of people here (me included, admittedly I like too much stuff) already have to make choices about which statue or figure to buy, either because of monetary or space issues. Adding another license that you like to that would only make it more difficult to choose.
In my opinion, this is a huge license and can attrackt a large new customer base. I myself am a Disney fan with a small but growing collection of WDCC. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a PF Scrooge instead of a WDCC piece I'd otherwise have bought. A Robin Hood would be one of my personal dream pieces, though I don't expect him to ever be made a PF reality.
This line has a lot of potential. I think it can change the minds of a lot of people here when the first pieces are announced. It might even bring some new blood to the boards - though as soon as Lizzie McGuire gets her own section next to Indiana Jones, I'm outta here :monkey3

While I'm personally really looking forward to some animated film character PF's and no doubt to have a direct license agreement with Disney is a very big deal.
However, at this point, after 20 pages we are just going around in circles. All we know are two things, Disney and PF's, till Sideshow make a full press release announcement as to what exactly it means, I don't see the point in 50 more 'I'd only what POTC PF', etc.
Battletroll, in a way I agree with you, we all have only so much money and space to display. However, at the same time, while I have LOTR, starwars and even marvel statues, SS hasn't announced or shipping anything in the past 6 months that I want (apart from the Indy PF). And while there are a few possible future items of interest, like say the Electric Tiki Willow (from Buffy), what I really wanted was a Willow PF.
In a way the WDCC line is much the same, some look pretty nice, tho not cheap, and given cartoon characters, then of course its large area of flat colour. I always thought that for cartoons, the mixed media of a PF is just perfect for Belle's dress, etc.
Now sure, I never expected it too happen, just like I don't expect a Willow PF, but I'm learning, that unless its something I really want, then don't accept a substitute. Wait to see if what you really want ever gets made (Disney PF's looking like a real chance) or give it a pass and wait. No doubt if one waits longer enough, something else will come along that you'll think, yeah, now that I do really want.

I'll be honest, I could see this being a small line where Sideshow acquired the license just to do a few pieces. Who ever this Disney PF licence is aimed at, it's good that SSC can make those collectors happy.
I saw Tron again last night, and I realized that even if SSC did a Tron PF, I wouldn't get it. I want Tron 1/6 figures, and lightcycles. That would interest me more than a PF figure. The price of one PF alone buys you two or three 1/6 figures, and, I really want lightcycles. 1/6 scale lightcycles are absolutely doable, and very likely to happen, if someone would take the risk to make 12" Tron figures.

Well, just from my standpoint, I'm more interested in purchasing Sideshow products than from other companies. So I'd be more inclined to buy a Sideshow Disney PF than something produced by Electri Tiki or Enesco. Grant you I won't like everything that Sideshow might create in this line, but they are bound to hit on a few things that I'd be interested in. Not that am I overcome with joy regarding this announcement - but a Jack Sparrow, Buzz Lightyear and WALL-E in PF would be fantastic!

Buzz would be a Thing styled PF where there'd be very little mixed media.

Buzz must have a little light bulb that blinks. That's PF enough for me. :lol

wouldn't a 1/4 buzz be like 4 inches tall since in the movie he's 12" high?

Technically, but imo they can make him as if he's a full size human. After all in the parades he's a full size human. Damn I wish they would give us more info on this. The suspense is killing me. I wanna know whether I need to start stashing away money right now.

Well, SS have made a little front page note:
While we can't reveal any more information at this time, we promise to let our collector base know which characters they can expect as soon as the details are finalized.
So the wait continues.

To me that means they are working out with Disney what licenses they'll be granted under the Disney umbrella and what won't. This could get tricky since Master Replicas had to be granted a separate Pirates license that was outside of the Disney umbrella same with Muppets when they made their stuff. I believe Gentle Giant had to do the same. Rocketeer was in that umbrella but ol' Pirates weren't. Those with the hopes of a Captain Jack Sparrow 1/4 scale PF might be in trouble.....

My bet is that POTC was the big motivation behind Sideshow acquiring this license.
