So, HT seems to be picking up Sideshow's old 12" lines...first Hellboy, now Planet of the Apes. How long do you think it will take the LOTR crowd to seize on this as proof positive that HT will come to their rescue and complete the Fellowship? :D (and how quickly will people be able to point out that the new HT apes are versions of characters SSC has already produced, so their chances of getting Gimli et al are still negligible?)

I just hope Sideshow abandons the Indy line as soon as possible so that HT can give me a well-painted Indy on a body with decent scaled shoulders and without looseness issues!

I just can't imagine what improvements Hot Toys will bring to the Apes because I felt that most of Sideshow's apes were solid. I look forward to seeing them, but I doubt I'll buy them, The Sideshow Apes suit me just fine.

i feel the same way. I have no doubt that Taylor will look superb, but i'm very curious to see what they can do with the Apes. Knowing Hot Toys though, they will all look outstanding. There have been so many advancements since the original Apes were released.

I doubt HT would be interested in getting it if they didn't plan to do it right. I doubt their first 9 releases will all be in the same year with multible versions of the same human character.

Didn't see this coming at all so I was surprised when I read it in the newsletter this morning. Awesome news for the Apes fans!

I've always been a fan of the films, POTA is one of my favorite flicks, but I never picked up any toys relating to it, Sideshow or otherwise. With this news though I can see an ape making its way into my home.

So, just how many other Sideshow lines can we expect to see HT pick up?

Reinhardt
12-15-2008, 08:23 AM
$150 for an Apes figure sounds really steep considering what their outfits are... let's see what kind of accessories they come with, even though i care less about too many accessories - i'd much rather pay less for a figure without accessories than more with - most of them end up staying in the box anyway.

How close do you guys really think we are to having Hot Toys completely take over 1:6 licensing from Sideshow? I know POTA has been down and out for a few years, but some of the other lines are still kicking, like Star Wars which seems to do pretty well for Sideshow (probably the most profitable 1:6), would they really be willing to give that up?

I'm fine with it if they do. I've enjoyed Sideshow's work on these lines as much as anyone, but Hot Toys - that's a whole different league of 1:6 awesomeness - and if I have the chance to have a Hot Toys Chewbacca I could retire from 1:6 collecting completely satisfied (not that I would).

I know from reading the boards that Sideshow is moving away from 1:6, but have they given a reason why or made any statements about it?

Honestly, it does seem more and more likely especially with Hellboy (which Sideshow announced having the HB II 1/6 license) and now POTA. Only downside is the increased cost per figure, but you get what you pay for.

I just want HT to take Indiana Jones and Star Wars, then maybe I could get acceptable versions of the core characters from those films. (other than Clone Kenobi, not even the most recent releases have been acceptable) I was so disappointed with hugeheaded crappy-jacket Indy, and the cruddy Prometheus body. I know my opinion will be controversial, but for what Sideshow is charging now, I expect exactly right, not just "best version yet". I'm tired of settling. I mean, so yes, Sideshow finally adopted HT's cool way of making the head in skin-colored plastic and painting on the details (definitely my preference) but instead of HT-like quality, the plastic is shiny like he has a layer of vaseline on him, and his stubble is painted in hash-mark lines, like a sketch or something. No subtlety. With HT taking POTA, I may finally get a Zaius and Cornelius I can truly cherish.

ProgMatinee

I've been happy with most of SSC releases recently. $100 is a lot for a toy $150 is insane unless you're talking about figures like Iron Man or something.

Or maybe a first cast line with Paul Newman as Taylor, Edward G. Robinson as Zaius, James Brolin as Cornelius and Linda Harrison as Zira. And then don't forget Burt Reynolds as Brent.

I'm suprised HT would bother picking this up. Unless there is a huge hidden market in Asia. Congrats to those fans of POTA though. Maybe LOTR can come back.

As far as HT taking over all 1:6th. I don't want that. They make a nice product for sure but having to pay $150 for any figure will quickly knock many folks out. People already ^^^^^ about SS current prices so I can't wait if HT does how things will go.

Apes is huge overseas. And, yes, folks ^^^^^ about SS prices getting higher, but I think Hot Toys quality is way better than what SS has been putting out. Not necessarily $150 worth better, but I'm anxious to see what they offer and at what price. :monkey5

I had no idea. The films are good. Just never followed them enough to know how big they are outside of the US. I wouldn't say WAY better but to each his own. :duff I'll be curious to see what they do as it might lead to what they do with LOTR somehow. I hope.

I would think that depends on how well they sell. As was pointed out these didn't jump off the shelves at the price SS charged. I can't imagine too many fans wanting to double dip when these will be what 3x the original cost? Again, maybe I'm underestimating the POTA fan base.

Unless they offer something new (like Ape-O-Nauts) the upgrade in quality would have to be really substantial to get me to buy new ones. I really like the Sideshow figures... aside from the bodies I think they are really great.

Supergaijin76

Definitely don't underestimate the Asian PotA fanbase. Other than Sideshow and Hasbro, the most PotA toy collectible stuff has been produced over here for this market. I'm thinking of the little Medicom figures from a few years ago, put into production when PotA was mostly off the pop culture radar in the U.S.

That ended up being a pretty extensive line, and the best PotA work until Sideshow produced their awesome 1/6th line.

One the world's foremost PotA memorabilia collectors is a fashion designer from here in Japan. I think the market here will easily absorb some high end ape figures and then some.

But we'll see! I'm excited to get a look at these. I doubt I'll be able to afford all of them but I'd love to cherry pick some of my favorite characters.

These will sell well. Sideshow mucked up when they introduced a new marketing strategy, which was, release too many figures from the one line that can't possible be absorbed by the collectors disposable income, while pumping out other lines at a casual pace. I remember my head spinning and wondering which were the offerings that were going to be snapped up quick, and trying to work out how my budget was going to cope playing catch up. Sideshow had a heap of good licenses at the time, all groping for the same dollar. They were doing themselves harm.

Hot Toys bearded Taylor wont probably even get to land on a shop shelf, and collectors are going to have to change their underwear once they see an Ursus with the correct head gear.

To somewhat justify the $100+ cost they could package each figure with a large part of the apocalyptic Statue of Liberty. Collect them all and build and piece together Lady Liberty for use as a backdrop in displaying the figures.

I also want a Gorilla ape on a horse. That should be done before anything!!

With all of this fuss over the new 12"ers from Hot Toys... there hasn't been a peep about these little cuties:

if these are going to go for $120 max, the price point will be amazing - and i'll be getting them for sure... let's hope for a Taylor and Cornelius, Zira and Zaius now - I wonder what kind of deal they have with Sideshow - I hope that they have full reign on all characters from the films, especially part 1.

Wonderful Idea.
I was going to suggest the same thing. That would be awesome. Because I am a "NASA-nerd", I would definitely purchase 1/6 scale Ape-O-Nauts. I do have all the small Medicom "Ape-O-Naut" figures.

Darren posted this in the big Apes thread. It looks like we're getting Cornelius, Zira and Dr. Zaius (no surprise). I'm just wondering if those are the actual figures in the pic below.

Will definitely pick up Taylor, Zira and Cornelius. Wouldn't mind an Ape-stronaut as well.

Those are the Sideshow Zaius, Cornelius and Zira. They are fuzzed out, but I can tell.

And it would be weird if they were the HT versions when we don't even have the ones they just announced.

Yep, definitely the Sideshow figures.

So, for Apefans in the know... did the soldiers have the purple colors in the original movie, or was that a change in the sequels. I can'r really recall off the top of my head.

Yea, the thread hoping is insane. All the monkeys rattling their cages over the announcement of Ursus and a few grunts. Imagine the madness (if) they announce Zira, Cornelius, Zaius and Taylor. Apes need their own section :D

Put him the corral... where all humans belong!

Aldo, you magnificent gorilla! I read your book!

I'm gonna buy every stinkin' gorilla they make. Ursus, Aldo, Urko, Julius, the hunt leader, soldiers, the hunt photographer, that one gorilla who was carrying the kid on his shoulder...

I can't wait to see Dr. Zaius. I went to sleep last night thinking about that after watching most of Battle for the Planet of the Apes for nostalgia's sake after discussing the movies in one of these confusing threads. Imagine all the orangutans they could make. The Lawgiver, Zaius, Honorius, Mandemus... and who knows everything about everything?

Virgil! Who wouldn't want a Virgil?

What amazes me is they chose the most detailed costume of the bunch, with the glyphs, rather than take the easy way out and make a less detailed costume. That's devotion.
