About the movie – THE SPIRIT:
Adapted from the legendary comic strip, WILL EISNER'S THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister Frank Miller (creator of 300 and SIN CITY.) It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the SPIRIT (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he's going to wipe out Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader.

It's accurate to the movie portrayal of the character, but with that black suit it just doesn't look 100% like the Spirit to me. But I wouldn't mind owning one.

Also like I said in the Octopus thread, the weapons in this film look retarded. Why have multiple guns strapped to each other? They don't even look cool that way. It worked in Aliens because it was a practical solution but Ripley didn't go overboard like this.

Yes, when I wrote that last sentence, I wasn't necessarily still innocently sticking to the subject of action figures. Especially if any of these women turn out to be smart, adventurous, have similar beliefs and... am I really saying all this? Man, I'm getting old.

The movie itself looks kind of cool. When I saw the teaser trailer, though, I thought, "lame." After seeing the last one, I'm thinking this film may be out there enough to see. Hopefully with enough box office interest to warrant figs of the women. I even think they might out sell the gents!

The Women would sell well although they seem to be perfect additions to the "Hot Angels" line like Machiko than anything else....especially Plaster of Paris.

From what I found the rumors are that the next wave will include Denny Colt as the Rookie cop which will just have a Gabriel Macht sculpt sans mask. Which the sculpt here looks good but only slightly resembles Macht:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2335/2388243210_b81dcbc6ff.jpg

Sand Sarif which would give us an Eva Mendes figure and an alternative Octopus in his white uniform:

http://img.skitch.com/20080422-bq6beftftuiu7ma6uiuxm3jba3.jpg
The Octopus goes through so many variations that he'll be the possible "Joker" of this line and it looks like other than Sand Sarif many people are not hopeful of more females. Although Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson) seems like a no brainer.

Again all of this is rumor and conjecture and probably predicted using HT's formula of v2 statuses but take it for what you will...

that and the whole black and red thing going on.

The black suit isn't accurate to the source material, however. The Spirit always wore a blue suit, blue mask, blue gloves, blue hat, and white shirt (with the red tie). And the characters of The Shadow and The Spirit are completely different: different origins, different backgrounds, different methods of operation, etc.
Of course, Frank Miller appears to have completely disregarded Will Eisner's work to give us HIS take on the character. I'm really kinda dreading this movie, as anyone unfamiliar with the character will be given an inaccurate
interpretation.
There WAS a previous Spirit film produced 20-odd years ago: ABC-TV broadcast a TV-movie version back in 1987 or so. The title character was portrayed by Sam Jones (of "Flash Gordon" fame), and he at least *looked* the part:

I really hope that Denny Colt isn't correct. That would be like releasing Bruce Wayne, and they haven't done that. All the women in this film, I'd love for them to tackle them - Scarlett, Eva, Jaime King, Sarah Paulsen - any and all would be welcome. Have they done any female besides Ripley and Machinko in the movie masterpiece line?

When dealing with a character that old, things must be changed. There will never be a perfect adaptation. You need to adapt to a new material. Its life.

In an interview with Frank Miller, he addressed the black suit change. He said, essentially, he wasn't going to burden the character with a color choice that was brought about by the inferior printing processes of the time. In other words, Eisner would have used black if that could have been printed well.

But as the Phantom was supposed to be grey and wound up purple, Hulk was grey and wound up green, and Batman wore excessive blue, the Spirit should have always worn black.

I got him yesterday. HT spared every expense on this guy. Not that he's bad, but he comes with open hands (on the figure), fist hands, handcuffs, the hat and the exact same 4 gun thing that the Octopus came with. No gun holding hands with Denny though. Which is fine - he never held this gun thing in the film either. The coat and tie are wired, which is fun. But unless you're Frank Miller or someone who actually liked this film, I doubt you'd enjoy the figure much.

iunno.. the head sculpt just looks really cheap. Same with the hat. Coat looks great. Tie looks really big and awkward (in some of the photos it looks like it's floating and not even attached). Just overall (especially compared to Octopus) it just doesn't look like a $150+ figure imo.

If you disregard the body - it's on par with the DCD 13", although I like the wired tie and coat on the HT.

I don't think any detail has been lost from proto to production - but obviously a lot of effort was not expended here.

Nope, the hats are completely different shapes, although both are pressed material rather than plastic. Now that I look at it closely though - it may be the same as the Michael Jackson hat.

He's pretty detailed in the face, has the intrinsic sculpt. But the color of the plastic is paler than usual, so doesn't look as good.

I just noticed the mask is a separate piece but if you pull it off he has channels in his face where it's glued in.

Yeah....it's not top quality, but if I can snag one for the price range I'm willing to pay then it will be comparable to the DCD deluxe figures I've bought in the past (all at way below retail). And this is better than DCD quality I'm sure. Again, I'm one of the very few who liked The Spirit. I enjoyed the straight forward, two dimensional characters and silly action.

Most comic books are like that anyway.:naughty

I'm not surprised Hot Toys cheaped out. This one was always going to be a hard sell. The movie was awful and its box office returns were abysmal. Why not cut their losses on this?

I'm wondering if that's not what they did when they realized the movie tanked.

Green Hornet would work great! I'd love to see that.

I can see why 99.9% of people hated Spirit; it's not a good movie, just a guilty pleasure of mine.

But so is collecting these figures....:naughty

Hey Dave, what's the material on the jacket like? Standard 1:6 suit material? Reckon it'd stand up to some light fabric lightening treatments? I've just brought one of ebay and want to get it to a grey colour for a secret custom I'm working.

honestly, why did hot toys made them? They could have made The Crow or other popular movies, instead of some new, non popular movie.

It's pretty standard, but you'd have to use a lot of dye remover to get it grey probably. Maybe bleach?

It doesnt look too bad but more DCD or at a push Medicom esque than what we're used to from Hot Toys. In summary it looks a meh figure from a meh film. No loss

How long does it take to stain it? I'd imagine bleach would be quite instantaneous and evil at the same time no? Some bleaches can burn the material?... I've never used any of that though. I do know my mother has wasted the rubber seals around her kitchen sink with that stuff. God I hate the smell of bleach.

Dye remover can damage the material too. I had a brown greatcoat I was trying to turn blue and used dye remover about 3 times, which made it a sickly yellow and then dyed it blue about 4 times to just get a light blue. But there were holes where the material was disintegrating when I was done. The more chemicals you use the more damage it will do.

I'm gonna be the odd person here that actually likes this figure. Well, mostly. I'll admit the skin tone is a tad too pale (it more closely matches the asian TT instead of the caucasian TT. The detail is there, you just can't see it from far away due to the paleness. I may add a wash to the head eventually. I also enjoyed the movie pretty well (I guess I just have weird tastes) I was able to enjoy it for what it was, and got what Miller was trying to do. I will absolutely agree he could have done better, the movie seems like a collection of really cool storyboards or vignettes rather than a very pithy story. I did dislike a few things- I'm not crazy about the cat melting scene (I'm like Hellboy, I love cats) and I didn't like a couple of Miller's design decisions. I was pretty much okay with changing the blue of the costume to black, though I think the shirt should have remained white because the Spirit's costume was not totally monochromatic in the comics. No matter what suit color was intended, his shirt was definitely supposed to be white. I also disliked the use of Chuck Taylors (Converse All-Stars) as his shoes. Makes no sense with dress clothes on a detective-looking character. So, I made a few changes. I actually didn't buy the complete boxed figure, I bought the parted-out pieces I wanted, so I saved a good deal of money, and ended up with a Spirit that meets my requirements. I actually quite like the suit itself and hat, and think the workmanship is pretty good. I have always wanted a figure of The Spirit. Here's a few shots of my results! :D

my mother bought if for me for christmas off BBTS for $152.99

That is way too much for it. It is an extremely nice figure, but it doesn't have enough accessories for it to be worth that much. She should have gotten it off ebay for cheaper, but she refuses to buy from ebay.

But it is a very nice figure

The articulation is great and the outfit has nice detail too.

I wonder if any body has tried making the comic spirit from this guy?Get a white shirt, blue suit, repaint the mask and gloves, and maybe, dye the hat blue and that would make a kickass figure(movie version looks great, but i really didn't care for the film). As far as the Octopus goes,I suppose you could get a TT,and repaint the gloves and Maybe use an HT Joker coat and pants with a Spirit tie and a Dent shirt, maybe get a generic bald head and keep him in the shadows.

Not to sound like a complete rube....but I've been a comic collector for some odd 35 years.....have always loved the Spirit....and I didn't find Miller's movie to be all that bad....I was entertained and enjoyed it for the popcorn movie it was meant to be. As for the Hot Toys figures....I'm amazed at all 3 and will look to add them to my collection soon. I already have the DC Direct 13", as well as the Mezco 7" figures and 12" figure. All of them are above par figures.

I still think this figure is an excellent addition to any collection, it just looks cool in general. I think they should have included a cat and manhole cover though. And the face could have been painted better, but it certainly isn't terrible, and I think it is pretty good. And the outfit really is excellent.

I pretty much agree entirely. The suit detail is really nice, and although the movie is a little weird, it's not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be.
