coolio! I notice the pic has 'EDWARD' written on. I wonder does that mean HT will make a Vincent Price and Wiona Ryder? I like it, but there's something off with the hair, or maybe the face looks a bit too thin?

I think its possible if Ed is a good seller... although I would not expect a more accurate face sulpt, but I could see the hair being less bee-hive and more Robert Smith.

I contacted HT to ask if any other figs are planned from ESH, normally there's a standard 'we can not confirm or deny at this time' kind of answer, but on this occaision I was told there are no plans for any other figures for this line at this time.
I guess 'at this time' leaves the door open, but for now there are no immediate plans.

I am getting a strong Spooktacular vibe for this figure though. I bet you SS will offer it as a preorder.

toystales
10-21-2008, 08:06 AM
I am holding off on pre-ordering this because I believe that there is a high possibility that there will be a 2nd version. With Hot Toys' current trend of producing 2 or 3 versions of each figure, I think a 2nd version is entirely possible. But this is just my personal opinion. :)

Your always the first with these stuffs, appreciate it.

Well, as nice as the costume looks, Im not getting it.Sticking with my Mcfarlane 6 inch & 18 inch figs.

I know theres the likeness license issue..
Sorry HT, but I just cant get over the fact that this looks more like a stranger cosplaying Edward Scissors Hands.

Even my GF commented it looking more like Orlando Bloom and I think it does too.

Im not buying it,not because its a little off but Edward is not a big interest of mine.I would definitely buy it if i was interested.Even if it doesnt look much like Depp its a nice figure,V1 Jack Sparrow didnt look like Depp either but i love it because of the nice clothing and accessories that makes it a overall nice figure, same with this Edward...maybe :)

Snake Eater
10-21-2008, 09:57 AM
I'm quite disappointed to be fair, as this is a character I am REALLY interested, however I cannot justify buying it judging by the head. They didn't get the likeness, and the face therefore is not like Depp, I can get over that, but the hair is way too high for my liking. :(

10-21-2008, 08:53 PM
It pains me to say it, but even so, it does resemble scissorhands. Too bad they didn't wait till all the planets were in alignment and do it the justice it deserves.

regardless of the criticism, i still like it. The outfit looks amazing, and the likeness is good enough. It looks like Johnyy Depp as Edward... maybe not EXACT, but very very good. Hair is ok, not the greatest, but not terrible. But the outfit!! Insanity! I just sold my NECA 18" Edward and am ready to make the upgrade.

Ordered.

Mudshark
10-22-2008, 09:09 AM
Yeah, the sculpt is close enough for me with this character. If HT doesn't fix the hair, I may think about fixing it myself, but will definitely wait to have him in hand before making that decision. The costume and the rest of the figure do look amazing. This may be the best 1:6 scale articulated representation of Edward we're likely to see for some time, and I for one, do not plan to miss out on it!

Yeah, I was joking, but after seeing these new pic, who knows?

I think you're right about HT only rereleasing certain figures under the DX banner, but they could do a new head sculpt, throw in a white shirt, pants and a few other extras and there you go.

Sadly, I'm not digging the likeness at all. And I still don't like the hair. The costume, on the other hand, is outstanding.

Can't remember if it was officially stated or not... but I think that them not mentioning "likeness of Johnny Depp" is enough.

Although even though it doesn't look like him, there is nothing in the sculpt (like say a mustache) that looks wrong either. I'm definitely gung-ho on adding this one to the collection.

Guess I'll just have to display him in the shadows! I'll try and dig out my old Medi one as well for the review, but I'm not hopefull as he's in storage in my loft (has been since I moved house 3 years ago) so it's a bit like a needle in a haystack.

shame it doesnt really look like Depp, but you know what? If i had the money I'd still get it.. the rest of the figure is just so amazing. LOVE the detail in the outfit. One of my customers from Hong Kong (I think) had sent me the Medicom Scissorhands to resculpt.. but as soon as this was released he told me to hold off and he's sending me this one instead lol. Should be fun when I get round to it. (might see if I can figure out a way to improve that hair too... its just not how I remember it from the film :( )

No i think they can do it with Lee's likeness. So much Crow merchandise has been made, from model kits to action figures small and big companies i really don't see how this could be a problem for Hot Toys.

The question is; are likeness rights and movie rights always two seperate things, i really don't know.

I wouldn't be interested in a Crow figure without Brandon Lee's likeness. That figure above all should have an accurate likeness in my opinion.

People knocking this are the same people who, months from now, will be kicking themselves for not buying this. You DO NOT pass on a figure with as much detail as this one has. Head sculpts are easy to come by, but just try making an outfit as complicated as this one. I am buying at least two. The eventual custom head will be an easy upgrade.

Just got mine in.

I actually thought I'd be more impressed. I can't see Depp from any angle, so you can pose his head whichever way you'd like because it still wont look like him.

Why am I not impressed. I have the McFarlane figure, so I can't help but compare this one to that one. The McFarlane figure looks like Depp, but I never liked it being 1/4 scale and being all plastic. I thought the Hot Toys outfit would blow me away because I expected it to be material. Unfortunately it's mostly plastic. Not one moulded piece like the McFarlane, rather several moulded pieces or plastic combined with some plastic and pleather wrappings for the most part. It's like a mini McFarlane with some loose plasticky parts. I was hoping for real buckles and belts. There's just none of that on here. It's not like you could ever hope to undress him and swap out parts.

The scissorhands themselves are quite good. If McFarlane had done theirs in 1/6th scale it'd be a better buy for the money really. Due to Edward having his hands it's not like he's going to be posed crouching or kneeling, especially with his fairly rigid plastic boots. So the limited articulation on the McFarlane is kind of justified. The head, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and knees are articulated, but the range is restricted. On the head is mostly sideways, the neck backward and forward, the wrists up and down and hard to maneuver due to the delicate scissor parts. The rest have a fairly normal range. Still, this one is 1/6th and looks the part until they are able to get the likeness rights and bring out a DX. As wookster said, it's Edward and it is fairly easy to see past the sculpt.

^ sounds like HT is heading towards the cliff. Just like what happened to McFarlane when they were at their peak. Unwise business decision. 12" should always be about attention to details and quality; something that doesn't go hand in hand with mass production. HT just proves this theory, IMO. Sad thing, really.

Anyways, having to see this fig in hand, my conclusion is:

So-so head sculpt + pretty cool costume and box= easy pass for me.

Hot Toys couldn't get Depp's likeness for this, so this was the best they could do. I wouldn't call it heading for the cliff because they have one figure that isn't quite up to par with alot of their others. Though I'm very disappointed that it doesn't look like Depp, it's still the best Edward out there at the moment.

Unlike gary oldman 'gordon' that's infamous for not letting his likeness to be mass produced, depp's likeness has never been an issue (HT sparrow, medi todd, sparrow, scissorshands, mcfarlane scissorhands and so on)

So I'm assuming it has something to do with paying the right amount of royalty, or they've gotten so popular over the last year that they think we'll just swallow up whatever garbage they throw our way, as long as they slap on the HT label.

This, and mainly their so called MMS DX joker has gotten many fans, including me, disapointed with their way of business.

I don't think you can come to the conclusion that HT is getting too cocky (or cheap), since anyone with half a brain knows that having Depp's likeness would greatly help sales of the figure. It's in their interest to have the likeness, unless it was somehow so expensive that it would make the figure unprofitable. They must have had a good reason for not using it.

Still, the McFarlane figure seems to have a pretty good likeness to Depp, so I'm not sure what the situation is. It doesn't seem likely that McFarlane could afford the likeness for a much cheaper figure while HT couldn't, but maybe something has changed since that figure was made.

I think the McFarlane is more bang for the buck, seeing that it has a motion sensor to wave his right arm and work it's scissors. I spent the best part of an hour in my loft on Monday looking for my Medi-Ed, so far no luck. my system usually works pretty well, but i've been circulating a lot recently. Still hope to find it, but here's a link to my old review from 5 years ago, and I think he'd been out for at least a year then- http://www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW_111004b.htm
From my memory it was a sweet figure, but this is a quantum leap forward in terms of the costume and fine tuning of details on things like the hands.

creecher

Thanks for the response and link wookster.

The attention to detail is certainly a few steps up on the Medi figure in the review pictures. The whole overall look is better with a tighter fit to the clothing. The McFarlane is actually better detailed, in that it can incorporate the worn and creased look of the cloth and grab even the different textures that the Hot Toys one can't, whereas the Hot Toys one can embelish certain aspects by having real chain and stitching etc, and by being able to separate areas, giving a more realistic 3D look to the subject. I'd even say the McFarlane hair is just as piled up as the Hot Toys, but it isn't as noticeable by having areas of the hair splay out in different directions, rather than just having it piled up.

The Hot Toys figure does look semi odd when you look at the forearms, which look to be out of proportion. Most of what I have been saying isn't noticeable until you are able to have another Edward handy to compare it with. I daresay you'll know what I mean when you have it in hand. I'm really looking forward to your review.

All in all it's Edward no matter which way you look at it, and it's iconic, and to me, they're all great Scissorhands renditions. I hope it devalues the Medicom version, cause I wouldn't mind getting one of them as well. It's just that sort of figure. Accuracy be damned. Edward is cool in any school.

As far as the head sculpt goes, Hot Toys ought to have given him at least a few scars, and some black lippy, to give him that pursed look.

It does have scars. I would say the color on the lips are quite accurate. There are some movie promo pics where Edward seems to have black lips but in the movie not so much.

I can't even compare this to the Mcfarlane figure, the Hot Toys figure is so much more superior. I say you won't be dissapointed when you buy this figure.

Now hold on there missy. He did mention the McFarlane scissorhands, which looks great. The sculpt is Depp, and has the forlorn stunned mullett look.

http://i43.tinypic.com/znaqa0.jpg

The detail on this is way better than the Hot Toys, solely because every nuance can be captured and replicated. The look of the Hot Toys is another matter. As an example look at the boots. Both are plastic, yet the McFarlane has definition between all the belts and buckles and the Hot Toys has them but they're more blended into the whole boot.

Anyway, here's a couple of quick snaps. Had to use the flash it's dark here and these guys are very black. Did a little brightening and gamma.
http://i41.tinypic.com/9izpe0.jpg

The very nature of the materials used on the Hot Toys does not allow for this detail. That's not to say the McFarlane is better at all. It's bigger, so it's easier to distinguish these details. The Hot Toys is wearing the costume. It's definitely more real. There is more work in it. Parts pieced together with an outstanding result.
http://i42.tinypic.com/a17np.jpg

It seems to me unless you have both the figures in front of you, like I said earlier, you're likely to not understand where I'm coming from. Those who get the Hot Toys figure, and are non the wiser, will undoubtedly be thrilled with it.

I think if you didn't know Depp played Edward, you wouldn't recognize him in the McFarlane as you do in HT Sparrow. The point I'm making is, I don't think any of them actually got the rights to Depp's image, for one reason or another.

One day I'll have a quality SLR and some good lenses, but for now I'm happy with what I've got (not that happy obviously!) so if any reps from Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Fuji, Sony... hell I don't care, but if you're reading and want a plug, send me a digital SLR!

Well, I'll just derail for this one reply, but I used to use an old Olympus OM-1 back in the days film and prints so I'm used to a fully manual camera.
But the one I use now is a Fuji F610. I got in on eBay brand new for about £40 (can't actually remember now) so it's a pretty good camera, and the macro facility is sound as a pound.

Just got back late from work and Eddies here!!!

Just took a couple of quick snaps (lighting is c**p here) Post some decent ones when I get 5 mins in decent daylight.

Got to say I'm loving this figure. Sure, it ain't Dep. Got over it, moved along.

Detail on the outfit is excellent, some of the parts on the gloves are tiny metal rods!

Articulation suffers because of the tight suit, but hey, it was like that in the film, poor guy could only shuffle about!

All in all very pleased - Box was a bit beat up on it's journey from Hong Kong but not too bad, pity though it's a nice box...

anyway, here he is...

OK, as I said in an earlier post, hands are very delicate! Suit restricts movement a lot (There's a small metal rod through the back of his right boot which means you can't bend that knee joint much). But overall, considering the movements of the character on screen... he has similar pose-ability. Let's just say he won't be doing any breakdancing, he's more your Monster Mash kinda guy.

What Han are you dropping? Carbonite? I had him on Pre-order but just felt a bit Meh towards him. I've sold my soul to Hot Toys, even considering loosing TOHT so I can indulge in some Terminator Goodness:naughty

None of the other figures you mention look like Depp except Sparrow. It could have something to do with the movie rights and not Depp at all. Disney has the rights to the Sparrow image, that's why it was on just about everything you can imagine.

This is a month-old post and someone has already commented on it but I wanna chime in here and say I think this is bull as well.

Both McFarlane Depps (Edward and Ichabod), NECA's Jack, Medicom's Sweeney, they ALL have great Depp likenesses. There's no way you can look at any one of them and try to say that the likeness wasn't secured, let alone done poorly.

Hot Toys doing an Edward Scissorhands? That would have been a must-buy for me if it actually looked like Depp and I can't believe for a second that someone as licensing-friendly as Depp was unwilling to do it. If anything, they got the likeness (I mean, it is all over the packaging) and they just fumbled it badly. Not even Hot Toys is beyond a bad sculpt. Edit: the more I look at the proto pics the more I'm convinced that they were going for Depp and just dropped the ball badly.

As it stands this figure is a very excellent representation of Johnny Depp's stand-in or of a very committed cosplayer but as a figure of the "real" Edward Scissorhands this figure is an epic failure.

I was talking strickly Sideshow figures when I made that comment and the figures you mentioned were pointed out to me. And I wasn't stating a fact, but was just commenting on the possiblity since HT usually doesn't get a likeness that "off" without there being a real good reason for it.

I still really like this figure a lot. The plastic straps aren't so bad in person and the outfit on a whole is really nice. The level of detail you'd expect from HT. Head needs repaint though...

The outfit as a whole is nice. I was just mentioning on another thread about what a great job Hot Toys would do on the costume if they ever decided to do a Hellraiser figure.

Sorry, but I know for a fact that they didn't have likeness rights. I'd imagine that since PotC Depp's representation are asking quite a bit for now likeness rights for him.

I'm just guessing, but I'd think that it didn't make economic sense to do the figure if they had to pay for the Depp likeness as well as the character license.

I've always wondered how they handle the lack of likeness rights, like when sculpting how does one empirically gauge the percentage of likeness resemblance so that the figure is within the legal allowance?

Sort of an odd request, I was just looking at my Edward's face and noticed he had some wrinkles next to his left eye but not his right eye?
It looks a bit strange so I may apply some paint, but I just wanted to know if anybody else's figure has the same.

Hmmm I did know HT would really bother doing a figure if they couldnt get a likeness. I mean I know about the first T-800 they did with no Arnie likeness but they had an excuse: by giving giving him a BD blasted away skin look. But this is different, I mean I actually like it but wouldnt buy it because its not Depp and he encompassed that role. Anyway if so many people _____ about it why is it going for absurd prices now?
