"Regeneration, my dear, and not a moment too soon!"
Hey gang, I am positively thrilled to announce my group Doctor Who commissions have changed from Ada over to Chris Howes. Not only is he amazingly talented, he is runs a much more professional ship (these will only be offered through us, together), guarantees properly scaled heads, and... is a Doctor Who fan?!? :horror :horror :horror

Some of Chris' previous work.
This first post has been updated to reflect the current heads being made.
Right now, Chris is just about to start sculpting his 4th Doctor and (classic) Sarah Jane Smith heads. Pre-payments are being accepted for these now.
Each head is $35, + $5 S&H, but that $5 covers up to 5 heads.

I was asked a good question about what bodies the heads are for. Both will be for standard Dragon bodies. Sarah is being made for a Dragon female body because if she's popped on a Cygirl bod, she'll suddenly become a size DD (laugh). Dragon is a bit more realistic. :)

I got one of Ada's heads from the previous commission and will hopefully be getting a couple of casts of BillyB's sculpts of Tom in the near future.
Does this mean I won't be intrested to see how these turn out?
HELL NO! BRING 'EM ON! :D
As far as I'm concerned Tom Baker is THE Doctor and the more sculpts of him there are,the better as it's always nice to have a choice.
The other sculpts all have a serious look to them so my preference would be for one with Tom's trademark grin especially as the one from Product Enterprises/Iconic Replicas doesn't look like it'll ever see light of day but providing there was a noticeable difference in the expression from the other sculpts I've mentioned I wouldn't rule out getting another serious looking one.
A Sarah Jane from season 13 is a must and at present I'm not sure about a Pertwee era version though I wouldn't rule one out, especially if we got a Pertwee sculpt to go with it.

SARAH (LONGER SEASON 13 PoE HAIR)
Not interested in just heads or 12" figures, but do me a fully sculpted 1/6th SJS in polystone, painted that looks just like that photo and I'm in.
Better yet, make it a 1/4 scale "PF" and I'm ready to write the cheque (as long as I afford it.)

hatted and serious look for me rick i think, everytime. to me the iconic look of the 4th doctor is the long scarf and wide brimmed hat. the reason i go for serious look is because toms best performances came from his serious stern and sometimes frightened times such as pyramids of mars and the seeds of doom
so i prefer the serious hatted look :)

I'm in for a Season 12 Sarah (easier to sculpt on longer hair if needs be). As for which Tom... can't make up my mind; basically happy whichever one gets done so put a tick under each of the variant 4th Doctors for me.
I'm guessing working with the materials at this end of the custom scale a baldy Tom with swappable hair & hair w/hat would be a nightmare to get done properly?

The Troughton was made in the proper scale, so there's not really a worry about Chris needing one for size reference (he is the exact size as a Dragon head I have here sitting on my desk).
We plan to be doing this for awhile. What are YOUR preferences for a Tom or Sarah. Any interest? :banana

Man, I dunno about all of those cactus needles being able to be molded on(laugh). There was a Hot Toys Ancient Predator that required you to individually glue all of his spiney face quills his face on that I wouldn't wish on my greatest enemy--- (I'm talking to you, Melville Dewey, creater of the Dewey Decimal system!)--- if they came seperately in a kit.
A Meglos version sounds more like something you'd have to customize/modify yourself, but one I'd love to see. If ONLY there were people on this board who liked to customize--- :monkey5:monkey5 :lol

There are some great things on the horizon here with the Who commissions, but obviously we don't want to do too many at a time. We've only just posted this commission and are still waiting for it to fill up, BUT... I've actually asked Chris though about including neccessary things with heads as needed, like when you need a set a hands to go with a particular humanoid monster (Ex: Sontarans, Kraal, Terileptils) selling those with the head too.
It just makes sense you'd need them, like you said... :)

Heads for these figures are all well and good, but is/are there any GOOD 1/6 costumers out there who can make a run of Tom Baker Who Outfits for the figures? I've seen some great work, but everyone seems to focus on 'the head' rather thatn 'what a figure will wear', which can be just as big, if not bigger an issue.
If anyone could create these costumes, then I'd be in for one of Chris's heads, but only 'IF'.
I've wanted a good Tom Baker Who figure for such a long time.

There are a few that may be able to help, and I absolutely understand where you are coming from. My thought to offering heads without the complicated costumes is that it is at least "eliminating stage one" of the problems of making the custom.
I have a potential lead on that to help you guys out, and I'll try and post on that soon. :)

I've wanted a good Tom Baker Who figure for such a long time.
Back in my earlier cutomizing days, when I first started with making custom Mego Doctor Who stuff, (in the age before the last great Time Wars), I had much the same problem for any human characters I might want to make. Technically, those clothes were even harder to come by, because those were 9" scale and I didn't have all these clothes parted out to at least get me some shoes like I can at 1:6 stores now.
I knew I sure as hell couldn't sew. I tried, and oh yeah, I failed. (laugh).
So I had to figure out "where the heck can I get these clothes made for me?"
So I Googled doll seamstresses. Just generically, to see what I could find.
Most were for American Doll, some were for Barbie, but Barbie was close enough in size I felt comfortable in asking.
So I contacted them to see if they'd be willing. When they were, I had to send them a doll body to make sure they got the size right and lots of researched photo reference. I had to be specific as to what I wanted. Saying "make it like the picture" wasn't enough. I had to say "I want functional pockets, patches on the arms, etc".
If I had existing clothes already that was similar like a jacket that they could use to modify from, it helped them. They would charge $25 to have to make the pattern, because that was extra work for them. And most importantly, I learned even though I don't know the difference between names of materials, the custom would look better if I chose the material (and colors) myself then send them to the seamstress. It really is better to be as involved with the process as possible since the outfits were special costumes and not everyday clothes.
Once done, because she now had the pattern, multiples would be cheaper. Just to be warned going in, all the costume pieces add up. Don't be surprised if the hand-made costume reaches close to a hundred bucks, and for a Tom, that's not including the scarf, which, lets be frank, can be a nightmare depending on how it is accomplished.
I'm saying all this because (awwww crap, he's going to do one of his stupid "Braveheart speeches"!) as customizers, NOTHING you want should be beyond your dreams. You just need to search out the right people to help you. There are tons of people in this hobby or related hobbies just a key board away and a 20 minute google search.
I wanted custom heads. I sought out Ada. Now I've done a thousand times better and found Chris who is a giant Who fan as well, and now everybody is getting heads. You don't even know the announcements we are about to make. :naughty
You need unusual clothes for ANY custom? Any custom at all? I realize the sew-ers on this board are very finite and may have a backlog of projects already, so if you really want it, you guys might need to search elsewhere like I initially did. And I'm not just talking for Who clothes, I mean any awesome custom you've ever wanted done but thought "yeah, but how would I get THAT costume made even if I got the head?"
I KNOW, I used to hit that wall A LOT.
BUT, I'm not going to leave you guys hanging like that. :) I have a few options for you guys first...

As far as 1:6 costumes go, the struggles and pitfalls in this hobby changed dramatically when I found VikkiTX, a very detailed oriented fangirl seamstress Doctor Who fans should know here already. She's a big Doctor Who fan and is big into Doctor Who customs herself. Her eye-boggling website is here (http://vikki.ethernauts.net/).
She made my 1:6 Kolchak the Nightstalker costume and my Phantasm Tall Man costume for me as well and is VERY detail oriented. Unfortunately, almost all of her sewing hobby fun had to stop once she graduated college and entered into the professional workforce which keeps her extremely, extremely busy with little to no free time to sew now.
She has been a huge contibutor to these Doctor Who heads commissions since the beginning, and as such has offered to make a very limited number of Tom outfits (without scarves) for a few people that need them to help support our commissions here, specifically she'll make Tom costumes for the people who pre-pay for the heads up-front, for as many limited slots as she thinks she can realistically squeeze in, first come, first serve.
I just want to warn as far as time, it might take a while. Her job NEEDS to take priority, and because of that, this sewing project may very well take several months to complete because she really is just squeezing them in and has a few projects she needs to finish up first. But the result is a highly-detailed costume made by a fan-girl who really knows the show, and you are guaranteed to get it if you make her limited run list (she'll let me know when she's reached the cut-off point). Once she begins she'll give me occasional updates to pass on here, so please no e-mailing her.
Once you've pre-paid for your heads, I'll let her know and you'll just need to contact and get in touch with her via PM to work out the details.

Scarfs
Scarfs scarfs scarfs scarfs scarfs.
Here is what the Hitch Hikers Guide has to say about scarfs:
"An icon of the televison series Doctor Who, the Tom Baker era multi-colored scarf is perhaps the most vexing part of completing a 1:6 custom of the character. Made fashionable on nerds in the mid-seventies onwards, the enormously long multi-colored scarf caught on in life and at conventions exactly the same way Fred's orange acscot scarf from Scooby Doo has NOT."
How to get a scarf? I've had that same dillemma as well. Option one is searching out and finding/hiring a knitter locally or online.
I did this recently and it ended up costing me 80 clams. Not dollars. Clams. (She was a little weird). :) Besides providing reference and double-checking on the colors I wanted used, I explained I needed the thread to look in scale with a 1:6 doll, so it needed to be thin, not thick. This is what I got:
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b263/aaaaaaaaaa123/doctor%20who%20mego/tom-scarf.gif
Not too shabby, but not the best I've seen out there either, and obviously, pretty expensive. I'm not gonna cry if this is the one I end up keeping, but I think I can try and do even better. I didn't have a great experience working with her however, I really did think she was flakey, so I won't be passing on her information.
OPTION 2-
BillyB has recently made a Season 18 purple scarf out of buying ribbed white material and fabric markers that I think turned out amazing. I am definitely going to try that idea for a classic scarf (supplies already bought) and it cost under 24 dollars (the markers were expensive).
If any of you try that as well and finds it successful, maybe you can get your money back on those markers by offering them here on SSF for the others. :)
The old seamstress I used for some of my older Denys Fisher costumes (pre-Vikki) was Laura Field at http://www.davinadawnsewing.com/. She still does sewing commissions, but specializes in American Girl and Barbie.
I found her to be skilled and willing to make multiples of costumes, but is also where I learned it was better supplying the material for her instead of letting her choose it because her choices could sometimes be goofy.
Someone out there MIGHT want to contact her about making some Sarah Jane outfits. I'm just saying. Andy Pandy anyone? Of course, first you need to find similar material. :)
I hope this helped you all some.
And THAT'S... one to grow on. :lol

Alright, the voting seems to have sputtered out for now and Chris and I want to keep things moving. I think most people who haven't voted are happy and non-committal for anything and really have no specific preference.
So we are going to zero in then and say that along with the "Planet of Evil" Sarah Jane, we are making a hatless, frowning Tom.
Both heads are $35 each, but shipping is just $5 (and can cover both heads if both are ordered).
Remember people who pre-pay qualify to get costumes made for their Tom by VikkiTX (while openings last!).
This doesn't mean the other possible varients are closed. Making a hatted frowning Tom obviously wouldn't be to hard if people wanted one as well since Chris is going to be making the regular Tom head. People can continue to chime in and say they varients they'd want it. When the list reaches 10 to collect the commission, we'll do it! :)

lol, just to be awkward how about another Tom option featuring the expression in your pic above, Rick? ;) It's a classic Baker expression.
Little thinks bubble - might it be an idea to sculpt his neck just a tad or so longer than normal so he can wrap his scarf around it without disappearing under it? A slight giraffe neck wouldn't be that noticeable under shirt, jacket & scarf and the end dressed result ought to be worth it. 'tis easier to sand down long necks than build short ones up too.
Also, another scarf option - if you can find them cheap anywhere, PE's talking Doctor figure. A couple of those scarves sewn together might work as one is a bit on the short side for a 1/6th figure...

Hello, all!!
I just wanted to chime in on the upcoming Who Collection.
And yes, it will be a collection! I'm going to make sure these are the best Doctor Who heads available anywhere at any price, period. I refuse to be out sculpted on these!!!!
Tom Baker is "my" Doctor, though I enjoy the others. My wife is waiting for me to get to Eccleston and Tennant. They're dreamy.....
Sarah Jane is being roughed out right now. I just received my Dragon body to fit her to and it looks well proportioned. Been watching "the Sarah Jane Adventures" for inspiration. 30 years off, I know, but kinda fun!
Looking forward to these!

And there IS a LOT of ground to cover. Everybody has their own favorite era. We are planning on making each one very special. I have my nerd-notebook with ideas and Chris always has a new idea or twelve he mentions he'd like to do every conversation we have, so this is going to be fun!
Oddly enough, I was just looking at my serious-faced Eccleston custom last night which uses the CO Walkie-Talkie modified head and was thinking "man, we really need a custom of him with one of his amazing, grinning ear-to-ear trademark smiles!" FANTASTIC! :banana:banana:banana

Giving this one a bump...now that I've seen some classic Who, I'm more jazzed about Chris' interpretation of Tom Baker than ever. (Yep, I ordered blind, so to speak. Thanks to Rick for some guidance in selecting early Who episodes to start with.) How is this project progressing? Do we have enough people in to order any sculpts?

Tardis Smiley, YES!!! That would be cool.
Sarah Jane Smith is underway. Tom Baker is a go NO MATTER WHAT. It's a gift to myself if nothing else. I believe we have enough to do a version or two already, but I defer to WST since he's handling the organization. However, I intend this to be the 4th Doctor to end all 4th Doctors. Big words, I know, but I have a bag of Jelly Babies and I'm not afraid to use them!!
So, I want to make these irresistible to Who fans. I want to make all Who fans really happy...
Thank you for your faith, I'll make sure it's not misplaced.

Wow, you already watched them? Awesome! I'd recommend seeing "Robots of Death" next when you get around to wanting to see some more, another of my big favorites from Tom.
You can always check and see how well a commission is doing by looking at the list on the first few posts. I keep the list up to date of how many people said they were interested and how many that have paid, marked with an "*".
It's going pretty much as expected. Whenever a new commission line is started, the majority of people don't tend to hop on until they have a few heads to see first, then later offerings in the line tend to fill up faster after that.
But now that you know the heads are actually guaranteed a sure thing, let me tell a bit about what you might expect from us coming up.
Personally, I like the idea of offering things in themes, in "waves" of twos or threes: a Doctor with a companion, an enemy from his era, or both. We've waited long enough to start getting some Classic 1:6 Who toys (not that we're limiting ourselves to just the Classic series), so who wants to wait to get a set going, you know? This way, you get a little set going from that Doctors era till we can get back to it. We've got some ambitious things planned. It's gonna be sweet.
I can also let slip that this Fourth Doctor "wave" we are on has one more character yet to be announced till we move on to the next "wave". Will that also be in the Tom Baker era, or will we jump to another Doctor?
Time will tell (shoot it before it can squeal!). :naughty :)

Whether it's sculpting, painting or whatever I think it always helps if the person doing the work has a love for the subject matter and I'm really looking forward to seeing the results.

Chris keeps teasing me how his harddrive is filled with all the Baker episodes for "research" purposes. Dammit, he just figured out how to make his computer a tax write-off!
I like watching eps myself on my "hi-def research study center", complete with reclining "research appreciation seats" and a "mini-fridge" in its base to help not interrupt me having to get up from all of the research I do too. Which of course I all watch on my new X-Box 360, (all of which mentioned is now also a tax deduction), which I keep far across the room from my... uh... research... jacuzzi... (did I miss anything?).
Oh yeah, and I only research in my... research facility... which is really just a shelter for my "hi-def research study center", not a house, (complete with my reclining "research appreciation seats", "mini-fridge" and X-Box 360), because without it to protect them from the elements they would rained on just sitting in a barren field and ruined.
I think the IRS will buy that, no?

Alright, I have recieved a number of questions in PMs about the planned timeframe for the next Doctor Who heads after Tom and Liz, and how often we plan to put these out after since Chris has so many threads popping up on the forums for possible future other commissions.
That's awesome because that means you guys are as antsy as we are to make more!!! Honestly, it's all up to you guys and Chris' schedule at any given moment, which can change from slow to hectic on a dime, but I'd like to see at least two heads being commissioned and worked on at any given time, (and Tom and Sarah are next on his plate to be worked on!) meaning, as soon as we debut the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane heads, my plan was to announce the next two heads, posted up for pre-orders at the same time.
I do things that way to make things more affordable for you guys. I don't know what kind of pace you guys can appreciate. Some of you have been saying you wouldn't mind me going a little faster with the lists, saying, as soon as these heads are done, you want to be racing into the next ones.
That is all ENTIRELY up to you if that's what you want (laugh). That plan doesn't suck either.
I COULD start taking pre-orders on the next heads tomorrow, but would you want me to do that so soon? You've seen all the threads that have popped up for Chris heads lately. This Christmas he's gonna be one busy, busy elf. The next round of Who heads could be a while off normally.
So the way we get more Who heads made sooner is to pay him for them before those other commission threads can pay for theirs. (laugh). Yeah, it's that simple. Puts us ahead in the line. CUTS!
So this is what I'm gonna do. I'm going to announce the next three heads here.
All three are from the 4th Doctor era, but two are from other Doctors eras as well. Call your friends, wake the kids. Tell your neigbors. We'll start collecting now for all three. The first one to reach 10 pre-payments is the first one paid to Chris and joins his que now. The others will earn their place as they reach 10 pre-payments. But who will the three be?
A Mistress, a Master, and a soldier.

Miskatonic Nick just E-mailed me the news in this next link the other day and I was like "OMG, that's the Brigs costume!", so here's an easy Doctor Who costume to get for once, making for a nice quick custom: http://www.monkeydepot.com/DiD_Bernard_Law_Montgomery_80057_p/di0092.htm
For the Brigadier, Romana II, and Ainley Master heads, as always, prices are $35 a head, $5 each for shipping, and there MAY be an accessory announcent later on for them as well if things work out.

From my POV a wait for the ordering of the next set of heads would be preferable as I can't commit to anything else until I've got Christmas out of the way.
I LOVE the next 3 choices, especially the Brigadier as he's one of my favorite Classic characters. Would there be any chance of a variant sculpted without the moustache so that the Brigade Leader from "Inferno" would be possible?

Well, it's not like the heads wouldn't still be available for sale once they were made even if you didn't help to commission them (like he has every Doctor Who head I've ever done). No worries, amigo! (laugh) YOU ROCK! ;)
As far as the Brigs mustache is concerned, what do the rest of you think? personally, I think ordering an extra head + 1 X-acto blade + sand paper= 1 easy-solution, mustache-less Brig, but it's your guys call if you want a second mustache-less version as well. I was surprised to see he was mustacheless in ref pics from Robot and Zygons (yet had a mustache in publicity pics for Robot). I had either never realized, or like most Doctor Who ref, the pics were taken during rehearsals and maybe Nick didn't have his fake 'stache glued on yet in the others? Time to re-watch some classics!

That's cool,as I've mentioned to you before that the Brig is one of my most wanted characters so I don't want to miss out!
It's pretty handy that there's already a suitable outfit out there too,I've wanted to see how good a DiD figure is in person for a while but didn't really have enough intrest in the various military figures they make but now I have a perfect excuse to buy one.
On some of the DVD commentaries Nicholas Courtney mentions that he never grew his own moustache as he felt it didn't look "military" enough and there's quite a few laughs when he and the other actors point out the varying differences in his fake ones!

One last tease I wanted to throw out there. I have been hinting at a special 1:6 Doctor Who announcement soon and these three new head commissions I just posted weren't it.
It's the first of a special kind of 1:6 offering for Doctor Who Chris and I have wanted to make for a long time now, and a fore-shadowing of the infinite posabilities to come.
It has ties to people in both waves of heads we've announced, and I really like to do things in themes.
Stay tuned!

For those that have been following the range, consider the announcement a Christmas present to all of you who have been so supportive of our efforts, which we thank you all for emmensely.
We're making a Fourth Doctor, a Sarah Jane, and a Romana II. A master and two mistresses. Who's missing? Yeah, that's right. :)

Just answering some E-mail questions in the thread here, because I thought I would share with the class. :)
"I was reading the Chris Howes thread earlier and noticed you mentioned the possibility of accessories to go with some of the heads.
I'm guessing they would be,
The Brigadier = UNIT communicator
The Master = TCE
What would Romana II's be?"
Essential character accessories will happen but Chris has a lot of various head commissions he needs to tackle first which will take priority, and since Doctor Who is a series we plan on producing a lot more from, it's not a big deal to do the accessories a bit later on once things are a bit saner and have slowed down for him.
The cool thing is though, as we make characters who need extra things besides a head, we want to make them. So for example when we make the Ainley Master in the second wave (after all of Chris' other commissions are caught up), he NEEDS his Tissue Compression Eliminator, so Chris can make one as well. (because we all know you're going to customize a HEROCLIX figure to make your own poor Auntie Vanessa!) ;)
I don't know if the Brig really needs his walkie/stick communicator made when there is so much cool military stuff out there in 1:6 stores we can get for him to use (unless you guys demand it!) Save Chris for other things, eh?
But a Key to Time might be a cool prop someday. Romana could use her own Sonic Screwdriver. After that, we'll make the recorders, umbrellas, and 70's styled TCE guns as we make the characters who need them.

No umbrellas are allowed as according to Character Options the sculpting of such things causes the space time continuum to stop continuuming.

Character Options bailed on their own 1:6 line due to their boneheaded "just for kids" mentality and given that Doctor Who isn't big in Asia there's little chance of any of their top 1:6 companies taking up the reigns which realistically only leaves Sideshow who frankly make a mess of almost everything they touch in 1:6 scale.
With that in mind I think going this route is the only other option for Doctor Who fans and one that will work out as well as any official line as the talent involved in making the various bits of each figure is top notch.
It many ways it could work out better because the level of input from us,the fans is above and beyond anything an official line would provide so we'll be getting exactly what we want instead of being subjected to a big companies personal vision of each character.

hmmm, is it just me or is this board going to keep Chris 'employed' for the next couple of years.....
I'll say! Let me tell you something, 2008 is a year for 1:6 collectors to mark in the history books. This year more than any other is the year the fans really got to take control of their hobby like never before and got to make their 1:6 dreams actually happen, because we had access to high quality sculptors we could hire to make those dream licenses happen.
For me, I saw Ada's work for hire earlier in the year and saw everything I ever wanted that was realistically never going to happen suddenly become possible. Ada didn't start out flakey, you know (laugh). Her bad practices grew as our relationship went on.
It's hard to believe it's all just been within just a year, but right away I commissioned my first three Doctor Who heads from her, Phantasm's Tall Man, the "Supernatural" bros, Bishop from Aliens, and Venkman from the Ghostbusters.
I mean, a Tall Man. really? When was I EVER going to get a Tall Man for my collection? It was heaven. And just as her flakyness was reaching levels that were making it hard to continue dealing with her, when this dream-run could have been over just when it was getting started, Chris arrived on the scene. Ada was talented when she was firing on all cylinders, but Chris is not only a huge step up talent-wise beyond her, he loves all these things and knows them, and is a much better and smarter business man.
So it's no surprise you're seeing the boards flooded with every fanboys wants as commissions followed by Chris name. I can't believe I'm partnered with such an amazing sculptor whos actually as big of a giant Who nerd as I am.
He's just as passionate as we are, and I'm so happy to see Terminator threads, Star Trek threads, Gladiator threads, not to mention the series I was doing before now partnered with Chris, being picked up and re-started now even better.
:banana:banana:banana
He's giving us a K-9!!! Un-freaking believable!!!! So yeah, there is a lot of Chris overload on the boards right now, but the funny thing is the way he can handle so many heads when his dayjob isn't demanding his time, this is really only like wave one and wave two of commissions for him, probably only taking him up to the summer (he can correct me if I'm wrong).
Do you know what that tells me? 2009 is going to be incredible!!!!!

as I'm mainly a NuWho fan, what I'd really, really like to see is for Chris to take on the tenth doctor. The problem with the CO sculpt is that it's so grim -- it's an expression you rarely really see on Tennant, who is constantly jumping up! and exclaiming!
I'd like to see a really talented sculptor capture Tennant in mid-exclamation. *That* would really capture the essence of his Doctor.

Yeah, someone's going to have to talk to my commercial clients!
Don't worry, I'm pacing myself.
I need to tell a few stories about how much I used to handle so folks understand that this amount of work just isn't that big a deal to me. That's why I "semi-retired" 10 years ago. Just went freelance so I could pick and choose. (Plus I can work in my underwear and nobody complains. My sculptors really hated it when I did that.)

I can see that. I would just be happy with a Tennant with the much spikey-er hair as he later got. Or his gelled-up Mohawk! That was awesome! I'm can't wait to get there.
Do you know what would be the coolest thing? Chris making an 11th Doctor head for us as soon as the actor is announced and shown with in-character press photos. Can you imagine having a New Doctor figure at the time or before he actually debuts? Alright, he's debuting (fully) in the 2010 season 5, so that's not to much of a hurdle, but it's still cool!

I can't tell you the number of times I've been thrown out of a resturant or store, and I always yell at them "Your sign says "No SHIRT, No SHOES, NO SERVICE". It says nothing about PANTS! If wearing pants here was a big deal here, you'd think you would have put it on your sign!"

Oh, I guess I should mention this just to say it, though it's been spoken a few times here and there in various posts here, this line WILL include Nu-Who things eventually as well. It's all Doctor Who. We love all of it!
Chris' wife in particular has been bugging him for the Nu Doctors, and I know Chris and I have talked about a really cool Nu-Who thing awhile ago that will leave you either screaming in excitment or weeping in joy that's on our to-do list someday. :horror Unless you blink and miss the announcement...:angelsmil

Give the people what they want!
pfft, commercial clients, what do they know, its all about branding, marketing, selling-through, O and Daleks, Daleks, Daleks (they sell, right!)
Then again, the image my "my" Doctor Who sculptor sitting there perfecting the Tom Baker grin on his latest head sculpt in nothing but a pain of jocks is maybe a bit more then I can take. Excuse me while I go and hide behind the sofa. :google
Looking forward to seeing a bit of K9 progress, but no hurry, sometimes its not good to show 'prototypes', just look at Sideshow and ask a few ppl why :lol

A 1:6 ANYTHING from "Blink and you'll miss the Doctor" will leave me with one feeling, absolute indifference.
The only things I'll be intrested in from Not-Who are a smiling 9th Doctor sculpt and an opened up Dalek with the mutant as seen in "Dalek".
Aside from the ones already on the way my top 5 Classic wants would be,
1.Dalek from "Genesis of the Daleks" ( I'd get 3 of these )
2.Davros from "Genesis of the Daleks"
3.The Master ( Roger Delgado )
4.The 3rd Doctor
5.Count Scarlioni/Scaroth 2-pack

It's not so much the price of the actual piece that puts me off, more the fact that the shipping will be high if I have to order it from abroad ( most UK dealers overcharge for items like this ) as I'm guessing the package will weigh quite a bit due to the material the statue is made from.
If a custom one could be made with lighter materials to reduce the weight and therefore make the shipping a lot less then it would be a much better prospect.

Thanks for the info,I might have a rethink on this one.
It's a good thing the Dalek in those pics with Katy Manning was empty as if one of the regular operators had been inside it would have probably developed another "weapon arm".

12-10-2008, 04:25 PM
speaking of weapon arms, I have a question for those of you in the UK, which may sound like a joke, but I'm totally serious ... are toilet plungers common implements in the UK? I mean, every time I see the Dalek sucker arm thing, all I can think is "toilet plunger," and what a handy plumber he would make, and so on. And I can't figure out how the BBC designers got away with that, without it just being a huge joke ... and maybe it was, but one thing my wife suggested was that maybe you guys use a different style of toilet plunger, and don't have the immediate visual association?
Tens of millions of years of evolution, and this is what I use my brain for, to wonder about things like this.

Hey man! Yeah, waiting sucks, man. Believe me, I know!
Just to take a step out from behind the curtain here, since this is such a big project for Chris and I, it's not gonna be just a regular unveiling. Actually, VikkiTX is a huge part of it too (cause she actually commissioned the Sarah sculpt all by herself to get it moving! Yea Vikki!!!).
As far as I am aware, because we haven't spoken in a week or so (Chris has been sequestered away) both heads should be done at this point and what we are waiting on now is peripherals for the figures to get to him so he can take pics. Whether that means for them to be painted up and sent back or if we're just waiting on part of their finished costumes to arrive to Chris for them to be photographed in, I dunno. Buts that's where it's at, so being ready "anytime now" really means "when all the stuff gets here" to be photographed! I just know it's "soon".:naughty

Let's make that "nearly done". Been a crap week with ice storms, power outages and nasty flu.... but the show must go on. Waiting for a final piece of the puzzle to help tie everything together.
in the mean time, if you want to see the development of a head from start to finish take a look over in the Hugh Laurie thread (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45265&page=53).
I usually never show the early stages of a sculpt, but some folks have been requesting to see these stages, so this is a one time thing!!

Welcome fellow Who fan!
The answer to your question...... impossible to say! :D Every head is different. Sometimes it flows perfectly and takes just a couple days and sometimes it takes weeks to get it right. It helps to alternate projects so they stay fresh. I may work a couple hours on one head, then a couple on another, etc. so I don't really even keep an exact tally of how many hours go into any given head. It's just "done when it's done".
Obviously, I would like to sculpt every head in the shortest time possible, but I would rather spend whatever time it takes for it to be right. Quality is my primary concern. Some sculptors rush things to get them done quickly to maximize profits, but I just can't bring myself to do that. When you force something it suffers.
Sorry I can't give a straightforward answer!

Yes! There is a chance. :D Just waiting for some feedback from Vikki.
I think Sarah Jane turned out well so far as you'll see shortly. I did a lot of revision back and forth trying to capture the subtlety of the shape of her face. Always more difficult to sculpt a young smooth face. The smallest error can ruin the likeness.

A Roger Delgado Master would be my no 1 choice but I like Ainley too!
That second batch of line-up choices (Romana II, The Brig, and Ainley) are tentative. The line-up may change by the time we get there and we may do something different. Ainley was chosen because of my personal OCD with choosing heads (laugh). I personally don't want JUST a Doctor head made when I arrange commissions. I'd rather have the assortment be a set or be themed and get a companion and era specific villain too, because who knows when we'd be going back to mine that particular era? Just getting a Doctor doesn't interest me. Plus I figured if Ainley got made for the Fourth Doctor, that automatically gave us a villain for a 5th, 6th, and 7th Doctor who battled him as well. Romana II was chosen to go with K-9, and the Brig because he goes with all of the Doctors as well, but all formed part of the 4th Doctor era.
Back when I started commissioning the Doctor Who heads with Ada I had her do Tom and Leela, so that was my little set there, then when I had her do the Second Doctor, Jamie was going to be next, and I was going to have talented Outpost Galifrey sculptor Neil Sims make "Invasion" Cybermen kits, so that was going to be another themed "set" there. Only I stopped using Ada after the 2nd Doctor because of all of the QC problems I (and everyone) was having so the 2nd Doctor theme never got finished. :monkey2:monkey2:monkey2
Starting off new with Chris and having him want to do a Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane, and K-9 was just phenominal because there's a freaking Tardis crew right there. I mean a K-9? That's amazing. Who thought we'd ever get one?
:chew:chew:chew. For those who don't want to wade through all the old pages, our love for Doctor Who is mutual and Chris really wants to explore the Doctor Who universe and has in the past mentioned wanting to make things like 1:6 DALEKS and Screaming/Weeping Angels, not just the heads, so that's phenominal! :banana:banana

bcm77 would love a Weeping Angel. Thats from his favorite episode. :lol
There are many words I'd use to describe that episode but "favorite" is not one of them :lol
I'd like a 9th Doctor sculpt with a FANTASTIC! smiling expression at some point but the Classic era is infinitely more intresting to me particularly Doctors 2-4.
That said I'd be intrested in just about any Classic sculpt over anything from Nu-Who post Eccleston.

If it turns out as nice as the one he made for your 5" figures it should be pretty impressive.
The obvious choice to go with a 1st Doctor sculpt would be Susan, then maybe another companion or even an adversary like The Meddling Monk?

My role with her was a bit different than the average consumer because as the person who specifically hired her to make certain things (I also commissioned her to make the Supernatural bros, Tall Man, Bishop from Aliens, and Bill Murray from Ghostbusters) and I had to deal with her directly to approve the sculpts at various stages, and there were many problems behind the scenes (she had a penchant for wanting to sculpt heads based only on the front view, not side images, and I repeatedly had to tell her to use the side images as well), then when sculpts were finished some heads had problem with not being made in the correct scale, which I wouldn't find out about untill they were in hand, and then when she'd make casts, many people had problems where her casts were poor and slightly to very noticably deformed (the Ghostbuster Bill Murray head for one).
All of my commissions were based on getting people together to help pay for the commissions with me as a group, and it was getting to the point I felt she was too unreliable to deliver everyone a nice finished product, because the QC probs were not accidents slipping out, it was conscious decisions on her part not to fix them before shipping (particularly after a batch of bad Bill casts), so I just had to break those ties. SEVERAL people were writing me actually asking me/begging me to change to Chris as a sculptor instead, who was just becoming a welcomed presence on these boards with his Tony Stark and Dark Knight heads, and that, as they say, is the rest of the story. Except the parts I left about penguins watching me as I sleep, but I don't like to talk about that. :)
I did indeed see my E-mail tonight my fine sir. I just got back from seeing Watchmen so will respond soon! To answer everyones question as to whether the hottie who plays Silk Spector appears nude, the answer is yes. See it immediately!

Toupee, had no idea things could get that difficult. She must have taken your advice to heart lately cuz she did sculpts of a friend, my cousins husband (RCMP), Konstatin Khabensky & my Dad. They look fine from all angles.
I know what you mean from the front. Her Mila looks great from the front but from the side looks like a chick without her false teeth out & her nose pushed in.
I was considering her Bill Murray, gonna wait for Chris. Love his work & seems to behave like a gentleman. Don't see that kind of class to often.
Damn glad you did commission a few, I've got:
the Winchesters
Tall Man
bros from Oasis
L - Death Note (she did an awesome job)
I'm so glad that Chris has made his talent avail to us on the boards. There are a couple pieces I need to get done. I hope to get him to do them providing he has the time, SSF is keeping him mucho busy

I just sent you some feedback on the WIP pictures. She's looking good so far! Hopefully folks will get a chance to see the sculpt soon.

OK! Here is a first look at the Sarah Jane Smith head sculpt, displayed on a body graciously provided by William Shatners Toupee.
I used the episode "Revenge of the Cybermen" as one of my main references.
As usual, young smooth beautiful female faces are extraordinarily difficult to get right. The slightest "offness", if I may coin a term, can ruin the likeness. I spent a lot of time trying to perfect her facial shape! That being said, I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

Bring on K-9 (with saucy voice quotes!)!!!!!!
That explains why you never got Ada to sculpt Jamie then. What became of the Cybermen?

I don't want to really talk about that too much here in Chris' Doctor Who thread because this thread is just about the amazing Doctor Who universe Chris is laborously and meticulously building for us, and it's going to be incredible! (Back to work, Chris! What did I tell you about no bathroom breaks? Put those clothes back on Sarah Jane!) :whip:whip:whip
But basically, I still have that one lingering 1:6 pre-Chris Doctor Who commission from nearly a year ago that's been paid for (that has been co-funded by several people on this board cause it was big) still is awaiting to be officially announced (I'm waiting till it's done). It's not going to be the INVASION Cyberman anymore though. Since Product Enterprises unfortunate announcement about their 12" line the project had been "upgraded". :naughty

It's that old confusing/annoying thing where they are 12", but not in 1:6th scale, they are literally 12" so they are horrendously too large. Davros was stated on Outpost Gallifrey as being made to be in scale with the 12" Daleks. :monkey2

That Davros is excellent but I'm not paying out for something that also includes a 4th Doctor that looks like he's trying to bite his hand off.
Scene accurate the expression may be but I rarely like statues or figures with such expressions and think Weta would have been better releasing the two characters seperately.
One other possibility for an all new Davros is the inclusion of a sound module like the one that's been talked about for K9,perhaps fitted in the base of the chair?
A clip of any of the moments in "Genesis" where he starts getting agitated and his voice becomes more and more like a Dalek would be pretty awesome.
But that's getting ahead of things somewhat, for now let's all enjoy the incredible looking Sarah Jane sculpt and eagerly anticipate Tom and K9.

You ALREADY need to sell blood or something. I think I've seen you posting in every one of Chris commissions wanting them! (laugh)
The good news is that Chris is a really big Who fan himself so this is a line he personally wants to be doing and is very passionate about. I throw an idea out and he writes me back with three more of his own. I can't even imagine how we got so lucky to have such a great sculptor who's so gung-ho about the same series as we are that he can't wait to flesh the universe out.
Of course, he wants to give them all big breasts and put them in tiny tops, (particularly Davros), and put David Hassellhoffs head inside a Dalek as the controller, so you really have to watch him, but otherwise, we really struck gold.
The characters should be spaced out enough it shouldn't break anyones bank at once.
If you didn't read the earliest posts about K-9, Chris is looking for everyone's help with cool quotes for K-9's voice chip which I believe will have 20 seconds of room on there. So far the smart asses have weighed in first with K-9's theme from K-9 and Company and fun outtakes to give him where Tom was swearing at him, but we need more suggestions and ideas (besides the obvious) for what you guys would like to see on there!!!!!!

According to the last official e-mail I got before Christmas from Product Enterprise or Sixteen 12 Collectibles as they are now calling themselves their Classic Who statue line was "under review" and as I've heard nothing since I'd assume that it's been shelved indefinitely.
If this is the case it's a shame as that's the second time that Andrew Teal's "smiling" Tom Baker sculpt has been denied a release but having seen how good a job Chris has done with the Sarah Jane sculpt I'm confident that his Tom Baker will kick ***!

I also had the statue on pre-order and it sucks that it seems destined never to be released as the sculpt is wonderful but the 5" Character Options figure has much the same likeness on one of it's headsculpts as it was also sculpted by Andrew Teal so I won't miss the statue that much.
And thanks to the various talented Who fans I've gotten to know here I'll also have 2 or 3 fully poseable 1:6 scale 4th Doctor customs in the near future which has to be better than any statue could ever hope to be!

bcm - the folks here on SSF forums are amazing, helpful, supportive..... I could go on forever.
Choked that the Product enterprises never saw the light of day, but I honestly think everyone involved in these customs are going to have brilliant one of a kind pieces in their collections instead of some mass produced stuff. Always seems like the big producers show images of incredible works then the actual production pieces seem a little underwhelming

I agree totally about the quality of these customs. I quit collecting Sideshow figures because of their continual failure to follow through on great protos so it'll be awesome to see the various Doctor Who figures complete and on my shelves as they'll be better than many official 1:6 products from numerous licenses.
Not being official also means they aren't subjected to BS like Lucasfilm's insistence on idealised likenesses or Character Options retarded policy on making certain types of character,no company would ever offer a choice of sound clip for K9 and especially one that featured Tom Baker swearing!

Chris, here's some shots of a Tom Baker I think (not 100%) from Product Enteprises. Anyway, love the facial expression.
Oh I love the look of this! It's the first clear images that I've seen of this one. What ashame that they never went through with the 12" figure. Looking at this it would have been wonderful. I'm particularly impressed with the profile for some reason.
The only niggling thing for me is I get rather tired of these manic expressions. I personally prefer 'sombre' Tom. Something along the lines of this bust sculpt that a friend of mine did a few years ago. I really like the expression that he got on that.

Click on the image to enlarge, then click again on the second to see the full size version. Sorry for the dirt on it, but it's been housed in the garden for an age. *g*

You should like the sculpt Chris is doing then as the expression is not going to be a grinning one.
BillyB has also done 2 excellent sculpts of Tom with a neutral expression,( 1 with a hat and 1 without ) and Ada's one from the earlier commission is OK as well so there's quite a few to choose from with that type of look.
A second take on Tom from Chris has also been discussed earlier in this thread and I'd either like a grinning version or the expression he did whenever he said "Shhhh!" which he did quite a lot.

As great as Billy's sculpts were I personally didn't feel to be quite as good as the one above, but then as that was done by a professional portrait sculptor it's hardly a fair comparison. Thats why I'm looking forward to seeing what Chris comes up with. :)

The only problem with BillyB's sculpt is that photos don't do it justice. You really have to see them both (with hat and w/o hat). In person, they look just like Tom Baker. I've taken photos of mine and I cannot capture it successfully on camera.

OK! Here is a first look at the Sarah Jane Smith head sculpt, displayed in clothes I hand picked out myself.

Vikki,
Those sneak-peek "Hand of Fear" outfit pics you E-mailed me were freakin amazing! You captured exactly how "cute" it was supposed to look on her perfectly. That had to be pretty hard to capture 1:6 and must have taken a lot of attempts. Great work!!! :chew:chew
The good news is that Chris has been silent online for a few weeks and that's always VERY exciting because it means he's locked himself away in his dungeon to work on stuff again. He just goes down there with lots of caffine, Fritos, and his collection of David Hasselhoff CD's and does his magic. You never know what he'll emerge with. Who knows, maybe that pic of Sarah in costume will now include a Tom as well? :naughty:naughty:naughty
Hey, one can hope!!!

Anyone have any suggestions for edojoe as far as if the jacket styling is on? This cat is a master with clothing. I don't know enough about the wardrobe of the show to offer any advice. Any good pix of Baker's jackets?
How about the cardigan vest/sweater? Anyone know of anything that will work?

Years ago, I made the red jacket for a Denys Fisher Dr Who figure, complete with elbow patches, vents in the back of the jacket, and trim along the pockets. I'm planning to make a 1:6 scale version later, and already have a few pattern pieces worked out so far. As usual, I'm modifying existing historical patterns, since most costumes from our favorite films and TV shows are made (or adapted) from existing historical patterns. I've listed some sources and suggestions on the Tips, Tricks, Tutorials, and Random How-To Guides (http://vikki.ethernauts.net/tips.html) page on my website.
For reference pictures when I'm sewing, I usually hit the Doctor Who Image Archive (http://shillpages.com/dw/bakert.shtml). Rick invariably digs up great reference photos for outfits, but I never can remember the websites he hits.

In the past, to find an in-scale version of a knit design, I've had to cut up a pair of socks, then sew the pieces together like any other vest or sweater. That sort of cardigan design appears on various socks. The trick is to find the design in the correct colors. I've been looking, but haven't had any luck yet.

The Image Archive is good. The main site I like to hit is Doctor Who's Tragical History Tour (http://tragicalhistorytour.com/). They are amazing for ref, but I've had a problem enlarging pics from thumbnails since they made over their website recently. Might just be my computer though.

Thanks! Here are a couple of quick pics to give folks an idea of what my 1:6 version of the "Hand of Fear" outfit looks like on a Dragon female body. (Obviously, the head sculpt isn't close to Sarah Jane. I'd hoped to have Chris's Sarah Jane head sculpt in the pics of this outfit, and to have more time available before I moved to sew additional outfits, but that didn't work out as planned.)
I had to custom print the stars, and the striped fabric for the socks. All the red piping on the overalls is hand-sewn. I found the shoes with a Ken outfit. If anyone knows of a better match for Sarah Jane's red sneakers, please let us all know!
If anyone is interested in buying one of these outfits, send me an e-mail after you read this webpage with info on payment and shipping methods, important notices about waiting periods, etc. (http://vikki.ethernauts.net/sell.html) I'll be moving in May, so I'll be packing up all my sewing stuff in mid-May, and won't get a chance to sew again for a while after that due to having to unpack everything else upon arrival. I've already sold most of the "Hand of Fear" outfits I made earlier, so the waiting period. Please take that into account before you order anything.

Yeah, I love posting tips like those as I find them for clothes but the info gets lost in the myriad of posts afterwards to help only the people who saw it the first time.
If we ever get our own sub-forum for Doctor Who (and other sci fi shows) that has been suggested, we could maybe start up it's own thread that wouldn't get lost for helpful tips like that.
In the meantime, let me add for those in need that the "Ryan" High School Musical 3 Graduation doll (the blond dork in the hat) actually comes wearing a red kilt for those interested in making their own Jamie bash. You gotta grab this easy stuff when they provide it, you know?

The "Ryan" High School Musical 3 Graduation doll's kilt probably won't work. Those High School dolls are much smaller than traditional 1/6 figures. I have the Harry Potter that uses the same body and they are under 11 inches tall with a smaller waist than even a Ken doll. Unless you use Ryan's body for Jamie, it won't fit a regular 1/6 figure body.
