There was a really decent expanded edition of the ROTA score released back in '95 by a label called DDC Compact Classics...nice packaging, a 24 page booklet with liner notes, an interview with JW, photos & sketches. This version had 19 tracks ( in proper sequence) and sounds great. It was living in the player in my truck for weeks awaiting the release of KOTCS to get me hyped up...:whip
I'm looking forward to this new set...and hoping we get more details on how TOD and LC are expanded and sequenced. The only thing I wish was happening is that this set would feature an expanded edition of KOTCS as well. The current version is good, but it's a typical Williams release in that several key musical moments from the movie are combined to make complete "tracks" mostly presented out of sequence to the film and some of the music heard in the movie is omitted for the sake of making the album. The emphasis on the front end of the album is presenting the various themes that are referenced throughout the score. It makes a good listen, but for those who like the score presented in sequence to the movie and as close to complete as possible, it does miss the mark. A big example of what I would really appreciate there is the complete, in-sequence stream of music heard throughout the opening of the movie...from the Security gate all the way through Indy watching the mushroom cloud...that whole sequence just worked great and the perfect score was a big part of that.
But with this new set, it seems like we'll finally have the three classic scores presented in a more complete form than ever. Can't wait!

It was released earlier this year. It's simply incredible. The music has never sounded better and the complete scores for Superman II, III, and IV, not to mention the wonderful Ron Jones music for the late 80's animated series as well as a multitude of alternate takes and even the Giorgio Moroder songs from Superman III are included. It's quite something.

Is it missing any tracks IJ?
Well, the additional tracks on the first 3 appear to have a lot of the music that has been missing from official releases for years. Still, won't know for sure until I get it and give it a listen.
The KOTCS soundtrack is missing a ton of stuff, particularly the complete Jungle Chase music... which is chopped all to smithereens on the CD.
However, there is that additional bonus 5th Disc that supposedly contains interviews and "More Music" so I'm crossing my fingers that it means the missing KOTCS cues will be on there. If they are, then this is indeed a definitive INDY score release.
Krypto
10-04-2008, 12:15 PM
I think the reason that part of the jungle chase music was excised from the KOTCS CD were because those sections were just the classic Indy theme that we've heard a million times. Remember, Williams personally supervised the orchestration of the music on these CD's.
IrishJedi

Actually, there was a lot of brand-new material in The Jungle Chase (and other sequences) that is not on the soundtrack.

I wouldn't doubt if old George edited tracks together, he sure pulled that crap in the prequels.
The finale of AOTC being the most obvious example of this. One must remember that when the music for the CD was recorded, likely elements of the film weren't finished editing, so Williams, as usual, orchestrates each track as a theme, rather than a piece that goes along in sync with the film itself.

Actually, the KOTCS score wasn't the victim of Lucas/Ben Burtt over-editing the way the prequels were. Williams wrote and scored scenes and then performed his own edits and cue cuts as Spielberg locked the cut and finished the film.

Okay, since I have been on a geek binge all week long (rushing madly to finish a book because my release date has been moved a week up -- the new Bond book, of course -- and then gearing up to see Alicia Keys live tomorrow night), I might as well chime in with a detailed, track-by-track analysis of the Raiders disc from the upcoming set. Cause I have it, as it leaked last week.
Here is the thing: If you want to create an utterly complete & integral Raiders playlist, you'll need Discs 1 and 5 from this set, AND your old DCC release. Some of the cues on the new release are compromised.
So. Act 1:
1. In the Jungle [Main Title] -- new release is 2 seconds longer, same track
2. The Idol Temple -- see below (4'01")
3. Escape from the Temple -- the cues are now properly separated, very commendable (1'36")
4. Flight from Peru -- new release is 5 seconds longer
So far so good. Act 2:
5. Washington Men & Indy's Home -- first new track, introduces Ark theme, with 30" of background score that seems missing from the film (1'13")
6. A Thought for Marion & To Nepal -- clunkier title, 8 seconds longer, same track, basically
7. The Medallion -- same track
8. Flight to Cairo [To Cairo] -- same track
Still good with the new release. Act 3:
9. The Basket Game -- EDITED in the new release, misses 13" of the spooky intro, use the DCC track instead
10. Bad Dates -- second new track, the poisoning & the dead monkey cues combined into a coherent whole, ideally should be separate (1'34")
11. The Map Room: Dawn -- I think it's "& Dawn" here, which is stupid; same track, 3" longer, vocals a bit more prominent
12. Reunion etc. -- despite the title difference, appears to be the same track, 3" longer
See? Problems. More to come in Act 4:
13. The Well of the Souls -- same track, one second longer
14. Uncovering the Ark -- third new track; on Disc 5, don't have it yet
15. Indy Rides the Statue -- fourth new track; first bit is unused atmospheric, the rest is the mummy scene (2'09")
16. The Fist Fight & The Flying Wing [Airplane Fight] -- same track, 2" longer
17. Desert Chase -- EDITED in the new release, misses a whopping 36" of music that DCC had
At least Act 5 is perfectly fine, until the coda:
18. Marion's Theme [& The Crate] -- same track, 3" longer
19. The German Sub -- see below (1'17")
20. Ride to the Nazi Hideout -- another proper separation of cues with the unused "riding" portion of score (3'20")
21. Indy Follows the Ark [Ark Trek] -- same cue, 7" longer
22. The Miracle of the Ark -- same cue, 6" longer
23. The Warehouse -- from DCC (56"), and
24. End Credits -- from DCC (5'21") have now been COMBINED into:
23. Washington Ending & Raiders March (6'49"), which not only features an unfortunate, however filmlike, edit, but also has the "soft" bit of the March tacked onto the end, just like in Track 1 of the DCC release. I'd recommend sticking with the DCC version for those, for a total of 24 cues.
So there you go. The new release is more than welcome for the new music (although we still don't have the version of Indy Rides the Statue heard in the film, as that bit was apparently tracked), but two major action cues appear here in their original LP form, not the properly expanded DCC version, and while two of DCC's edits have been restored to separate tracks, the finale commits that mistake all on its own.
Differing track lengths probably have more to do with CD mastering (length of silence etc.) than anything else.
The act structure is entirely mine, pay no attention to it. I've watched too much Murnau recently.
And now I'll go back to work.

Basically, the soundtrack goes from the music when Indy's acting all tough with the sword and then fleeing for his life to the bridge actually swinging down in half and the fight on it, the whole segment bridging the two moments with the tension buildup to Indy's big move is absent and I just really liked it because the first time you see TOD you get to thinking like oh ^^^^ how's he going to get out of this and the danger grows with the music enhancing it.

I bought the actual CDs for the complete soundtrack collection. It doesn't look like the iTunes version is missing much -- the most prominent thing would be interviews with John Williams, which I haven't listened to yet. Yes, I read about the omissions and edits but still, It's better than nothing. Also, I'm the type that just wants the main themes and titles, not really a big deal if it's not a "complete" recording type deal.

I would also like to thank you for the tip, because not only I picked one up, but my brother, and his friend, and maybe a few others.. :) Had been waiting for the "right" price on that thing for a while. Good times! Can't wait to hear it all.

You're in for a treat. KotCS is pretty mediocre, especially when compared to the awesomness of the first three scores.
Really?! I felt "Kingdom" was the second best score next to "Raiders". "Temple" is too dark IMO, and "Crusade" is rather generic aside from the Grail Theme.

The best music in KotCS is from Raiders. The rest just didn't register with me - a lot of unintresting brooding cues. Unlike the previous scores there wasn't even a trademark standout action cue like Desert Chase or Belly of the Steel Beast. Jungle Chase had its moments, but it was too disjointed. ToD is my favourite - a joyful thrill ride from start to finish, not a single filler cue.

Call me crazy but I personally really like the "call of the crystal" theme in KotCS score. it has that creepy, mysterious ambiance of the skull

The soundtrack is the best part of the movie! Harrison Ford's performance comes in at a close 2nd.
