View Full Version : No Ford.....No Jones....according to Lucas

NICASIO, California (AP) -- George Lucas says he's already identified the one person who can keep the "Indiana Jones" franchise going: Harrison Ford.

George Lucas dismisses ideas that the Indiana Jones series could continue without Harrison Ford.

The filmmaker scoffed at the possibility of passing the famed fedora from Ford to Shia LaBeouf, the 22-year-old actor who played Indy's son Mutt Williams in this summer's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

"He is Indiana Jones," Lucas said of Ford. "If Indiana Jones wasn't in it, you'd have to call it 'Mutt Williams and the search for Elvis.' ... "Yeah, it's 'Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis.' "

Lucas sat down with AP Television at his Big Rock Ranch outside San Francisco, where he said he didn't pay much attention to the reception from critics and fans to "Crystal Skull," a sci-fi adventure set in the 1950s. But he definitely sees a future for Dr. Jones. A fifth movie is certainly a possibility.

"The franchise really depends on me coming up with a good idea," Lucas said. "And that series is very research-intensive. So we're doing research now to see if we can't come up with another object for him to chase ... hopefully we'll come up with something."

Meanwhile, the 64-year-old has another popular franchise to nurture: "Star Wars."

Lucas produced the animated "Star Wars: Clone Wars," hitting theaters August 15. It will be followed in the fall with the launch of an animated TV series by the same name, airing on the Cartoon Network and TNT. Lucas plans a live-action "Star Wars" TV series as well, and he's also looking into re-releasing the six "Star Wars" films using new 3-D technology.

"We're trying to do that," Lucas said. "We worked on some, with a company that was developing the technology a few years ago to convert films into 3-D, we worked with them. But the system works great. It's just not very practical. So what we've been working on since then is to develop a sort of practical way to do it. And we will get there. It's just a technological challenge."

The producer-director waxed nostalgic for the days when talking to the press wasn't necessary to promote a film.

"I like when you focus on making movies, you make movies and people go to see them," he said. "But there's this whole other industry that's been created which the world hasn't quite adjusted to or caught up to or figured out. It's the same thing with copyright and all kinds of other things where things are going around that I'm sure at some point will become more civilized. I'm just waiting. Like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, I'll go out and adopt twins if they'll pay me $14 million to do it."

No more Indy movies please or Lethal Weapon flicks.
The only only character thats aged well and served by good stories
is Bruce Willis as John McClane.

Me either. I think marrying Indy and Marion was a good capper for the series. In the words of C-3PO, "No more adventures!"

I'd be up for another Indy. The beauty of Indy movies is that it doesn't have to go in chronological order. Indy 5 could take place before Indy 4 to give a solo adventure, though I don't think it'd be necessary to do so.

I would gladly queue up for Indy 5. Just no Mutt Williams and Marion, please.

Nothing's as good as it used to be.

Die Hard 4 was an abyss of suck that didn't stay true to the character ideals set forth in the original DH trilogy. McClane was awesome because he was an out-of-shape physical and mental mess who was always in over his head.

By that rationale, John McClane wasn't even in Die Hard 4.

Bring on the sequels. Your childhoods probably sucked more than you're giving them credit for anyway.

Yes maybe... If you could dump the dead wood of Lucas, Ford and Spielberg and restart the franchise, anew, a la "James Bond" you might have something.

There is nothing wrong with the Indy character... It just needs a lot of new blood.

I liked Crystal Skull a lot, and would be happy to see another one if they were up for it. While I was okay with Mutt as a character, I would not be excited for a solo adventure. It has to be Indiana Jones.

I know you have to be joking, so far all of George's movies have fallen short. Trust me go back and watch the original Star Wars, not the edited, new and improved version. It's almost laughable what got by back then, trust me they got plenty of my cash back then. Empire and Jedi weren't even directed by Lucas, and don't even go to the Jar Jar, and Anakin/Darth Vader as a crybaby prequels Lucas directed. Truth is Ford was still INDY even in the new one, problem was Lucas wanted his SCI FI 50's version which Spielberg and Ford didn't want, but Lucas kept pushing and pushing til the other two gave in. Supposedly a 5th one will gear more toward the archaeology part of Jones, and mystical McGuffins not aliens. If so bring it on, seeing Ford in the Fedora and jacket was cool enough, now we need the story to accompany it.
....by the way gabber,...i know you were being fascistious.

Screw Lucas. No doubt back then he was a great person. Heck I even did a biography on him for school. But now I cant stand the guy. He just annoys me. He really doesnt know how to make a proper movie, his ideas are looney. His power over Spielberg is disturbing. I mean, he kicked Darabont...^^^^ing Frank Darabont off Indy 4 just because he "didnt like his ideas" when everyone else did. His "Saucer Men" idea was MUCH worse. Mabye if he had...I dont know, talked and worked things out with Darabont, and worked out a great script, we would've had a better movie. Oh sure, I like Indy 4 fine, but I cant help but imagine what a Lucas free Indy would be like.

And dont even get me started on the Clone Wars. Blah.

I love Star Wars, I always will....but my enjoyment is fading more and more everyday when I see him keep screwing with the old movies. I know, they released the un^^^^ed with versions, but I missed those, and im sure they'll never come out again. All is left is his crappy re-edits that make the film 10x worse then they ought to be.

That felt GOOD. :D

All Lucas is saying is that the next Mutt Williams film won't be called Indiana Jones. Its as simple as that.

I don't get why after nearly 20 years Lucas and Co. are itching to jumpstart the Indy franchise. Kind of late, IMO. They should have been doing this 10 years ago.

IMO, they should have just stopped at Last Crusade. But the fans got their fix with KOTCS, so just leave it at that. The only good thing that's come out of bringing Indy back are the collectibles.

I no longer fault Lucas for ditching the Darabont script after I read it. It sucked pretty hard. KOTCS was actually better.

Yeah, Darabont's become a buzz-word basically. :monkey4

Let's just hope that Big Lucas got all of that ET stuff out of his system with KotCS. I personally liked it, but the franchise won't survive another one just like it.
