I just came across this and hadn't heard anything about it. Apparently they've been working on it for 3 years.

Set many years later, Jen and Kira are now king and queen, and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. coming 2009

Haven't heard much about this lately. Sounds really good the Dark Crystal was set on the surface and apparantly this will be set underground with a mix of CG and puppets.

Looking forward to seeing what Genndy Tartakovsky does with this since he's a big Dark Crystal fan

Yeah, I remember hearing about this a couple years ago... sounds cool, and I think its one of those few super delayed sequels that could actually be cool.

yeah, been waiting for this for years now.

I have some extra plan B busts I was going to put on Ebay in timing with this movie, but it just never seems to get any further along.

checkout muppetcentral, there is a whole thread dedicated to it.

This is one of those projects you keep hearing about over the years, which never seems to actually materialize. I will get my hopes up when I see a teaser trailer, and I will believe it when it actually hits theaters.

Well, he did wonders with Clone Wars...

Eh, true. Even better than Lucas did-----but I'm hoping to see more from him out of a feature film directorial debut.

Hell I think a live-action Powerpuff Girls movie would break the bank, but Samurai Jack could be truly great.

I've just never been a Dark Crystal fan and everyone I know that is like, "oh yeah! Dark Crystal!" really doesn't know jack about the movie once you start asking them why they enjoyed it.

It's a cult classic, but with a very select audience. It's THE best fantasy movie of the 80's in my opinion... one with the most amazing craftsmanship and attention to detail that I'm in awe every time I see it.
It's like nothing I've ever seen @ movies to date, maybe a little on LOTR and Pan's Labyrinth, and of course it borrows from every fantasy tale written before, but with such richness that I don't think a sequel will ever accomplish.
You can clearly see Henson's and Froud's sheer genius in this one...
just look at this poster:

Great news!!
Resurrecting this thread since if seems that finally DC2 is heading into production!!!

Check it out!!

We have a 'Dark Crystal' sequel, called 'The Power of the Dark Crystal.' It has a very strong script... Both of those projects... are very close to going into pre-production. They're both really ready to go. [The studio is] just [in the process of] putting together the final finance pieces and the final distribution pieces.

Well...
it's been a while but at last!!
Things are moving forward!!! :rock:rock!!

Spierig Brothers to Direct 3D Power of the Dark Crystal

Source: Omnilab Media, The Jim Henson Company May 4, 2010

In a joint announcement by Omnilab Media's Christopher Mapp and The Jim HensonCompany's Lisa Henson, Australian based Omnilab Media is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company to bring the fantasy sequel Power of the Dark Crystal to the big screen in stereoscopic 3D.

Power of the Dark Crystal will be produced by the Australia-based production arm of Omnilab Media, Ambience Entertainment. The Jim Henson Company's executive producers are Brian Henson, Lisa Henson and Jason Lust. Omnilab Media's executive producers are Christopher Mapp, Matthew Street and David Whealy. Cinemarket Films' Peter D. Graves (Terminator Salvation) rounds out the executive producer team.

Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig, writers and directors of Undead and most recently, Daybreakers, have come aboard to direct the screenplay written by Australian Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge!, Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet) based on an original script by Annette Duffy and David Odell. The legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud will reprise his role as conceptual designer of the film, which will use a mix of live action and traditional puppetry combined with visual and special effects produced entirely in Australia. Omnilab-affiliated Iloura (Where the Wild Things Are, "The Pacific," Don't Be Afraid of the Dark) has already begun work on the film's complex CGI elements. With this team in place, next steps will be to secure worldwide distribution.

"'Power of the Dark Crystal' is an exciting and ambitious undertaking and, having worked on previous projects with the top-notch talent and crews that Australia offers, we know we have assembled the right team to deliver the sequel to one of the most enduringly popular titles in the Henson library. Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig are sure to create a film that will continue the legacy of the original and exceed the expectations of our loyal fans," said Lisa Henson, CEO of the The Jim Henson Company. "We are especially enthusiastic to be working with Omnilab Media, a strong and growing force in worldwide film finance and production."

"We are very pleased to be producing this wonderful and fantastical film in Australia. 'Power of The Dark Crystal' will showcase the depth of talent Australia has to offer up on the international stage, including the extremely gifted directing team of Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig. The Jim Henson Company has consistently delivered an amazing range of entertainment over generations and is an iconic creative studio that we are proud to have partner with us," added Christopher Mapp from Omnilab Media.

Michael Spierig said, "We feel a tremendous amount of responsibility in telling this story with the same meticulous care that Jim Henson and Frank Oz gave the 1982 original." Added Peter Spierig, "This is a chance to take the world of puppetry into the modern age by using modern techniques (like motion capture CGI) and the tried and true methods (like puppetry and animatronics) to create a one hundred percent real world that is unique to 'The Dark Crystal.'"

Set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie when the world has once again fallen into darkness, Power of the Dark Crystal follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.

It's one of my fave childhood movies and fantasy movies!! Had like 2 different versions on dvd, and acutally just last week, got it on Blu Ray now and sold the dvd.

Love this and Labyrinth. I always group those two together.
