Shame: ?/10

Starring everyone's favourite man's man, Michael Fassbender. I'm really not sure how to rate this one. On the one hand, it was a very powerful, insightful movie. It was shot beautifully with magnificent photgraphy and lingering scenes of real character moments, and brilliant performances all around. On the other, it was such a heavy topic which was dealt with such brutal honesty that it made it a difficult movie to watch. And it also showed way too much of Michael's fassbender :horror. Although I can see that as being a plus for some people!

And just from the nature of the movie, I could tell that there would be a death (not so)--or in this case, a suicide attempt--by the time the movie ended. It also didn't end as bleakly as I thought it might (like death). You could see that he had hit bottom and was slowly going to start climbing up.

Well, okay, Shame really is about an 8/10 for me. However, it is a difficult film to watch, seeing how messed up the characters are. I don't think I'd watch it again. But it is a very strong, well made, beautifully photographed, brilliantly acted drama.

The Dark Knight Rises - 9/10

I know I'm in the minority but for me its my favorite of the three. If Batman's story was going to have an "ending" this is probably the best one. The overall story with Nolan's Batman is not about vengeance but redemption and in Rises he is finally redeemed. I still think the title is weak, but the concept of Bruce finally overcoming his demons (climbing out of the hole) is fairly well done.

That said I wish Catwoman was developed a bit more. At best she's no more than a catalyst character. She gets things moving; introdues the good guy to the bad guy thus instigating the major conflict, but it ends there. Her spark is hard to see once the fire starts bruning. That's not abad thing but assuing she's Bruce's new love interest and a major focus in his post-Batman life we know so very little about her.

Warhammer 40000: Ultramarines the movie - 3/10 (a generous 3 couse I am a fanboy, it would probably score less than that, for someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about 40k)

Oh god, that was poor. I am a fanatic of the 40k setting, but even I was able take very little joy in watching this. It's really disappointing that after all those years of dreaming about a 40k film, all those endless discussions on the forums, all those fanfilm projects that never got to see the light of day, fans of the setting were finally treated to this. The story is poor, the dialogue stillted, and the graphics and animation quality is just laughable (seriously, recently I saw the original Lego Bionicle animations, from like 1998, and it didn't look much worse than this). It's even more suprising that the movie was written by Dan Abnett, the most popular 40k writer, whose novels I love, and who for many years, has been constantly proving that licenced, tie-in fiction, doesn't necessarily have to be total ****. There is nothing of his talent and style in the story.

The are only two good things about this movie. The first is a suprisingly impressive cast of veterans. Especially the older ones, fit perfectly with the 40k setting, and their talents could have been used to make something really great. The second is the atmosphere. Despite the ****ty animation, the movie does benefit from a fraction of 40K art design, and I guess it gives it some semblence of gothic ambience.

The Dark Knight Rises - 8,5/10

Nolan's most flawed and uneven film. TDKR takes Nolan's best and worst impulses and enchances them. Still, despite it's many imperfections, its a great superhero film. Impressive with its scope and theatricality, a proper, moving conclusion to Wayne story, and a suitably epic epitaph for a Supehero with such an enourmous popcultural baggage. Plus an epic story (perhaps a bit too epic and broad for its own good), merging many different characters and themes from the comics into one tale. And of course Bane. Also Hathaway's ass.

I didn't watch the trailer -- but the cover picture on that video looks like he's strangling her. Had to look twice to figure out he was probably about to kiss a crying girl, rather than choking her and her face reddening. If I didn't see his thumb on this side of her neck, I'd still be thinking he had her pinned against a wall by the throat.

Now Bernie on the other hand, damn good little flick. I expected as much with Linkleter and Black working together. It didn't make me laugh so much, probably due to my lack of sleep. But I found it very well made. I enjoyed the story, and regardless whatever happened in real life, in the context of the movie, Bernie was in the right. :lecture

I felt bad for him at the end. In the context of the film, he seemed like a genuine person. It's a strange tale. Not too hard to imagine it happening, but the trial situation was unique. Having to move the damn thing 50 miles to get a conviction. :lol

Teddy, I finally got around to it. However, I think I enjoyed it more.

Killing Them Softly: 9/10

One of my favorites this year, however be prepared. It is a short flick, but the slower pacing is there. Much like "Drive" it's more focused on the characters and the world around it than a story. Very much a character study film, with great performances. Pitt was excellent.

The last scene is awesome.

That's pretty much exactly how I think about Killing Them Softly.
I might have rated it a tad lower than you, not sure. All in all a very good watch and I totally agree about the last scene!! Gave me goosebumps! :D

It was horrible and I enjoyed it. Half of the script was a direct ripoff of JAWS, even using the same lines spoken! Haha

If you enjoy this SyFy Original type B-movies then this is another Gem to make fun of. It gets a two because of Brooke Hogan.

Pretty sure I gave it a 9.5 three days ago. I think TDK is really my favorite the more I think about it. The whole franchise is a lot like Rocky, Rocky II, and Rocky Balboa (VI) to me. The first two are great and third is a wonderful sendoff and a good film in and of itself but it doesn't quite fit w/ the previous two for whatever reason.

Kind of like Raiders and Kingdom. Except Kingdom is pure ****.

I bought Escape From New York recently, & watched it for the first time today - loved it! :rock

Legendary director, an ensemble cast, excellent music, Kurt Russell in his prime (the glider scene at the beginning with him in the cockpit radioing in with that great lighting behind his head, reinforces my thoughts that he would've made a brilliant Wolverine at one stage) - obviously a classic film with no real explanation needed!

I kept reading so much about the young girl who plays Hushpuppy that I had to see it. She really is as spectacular as people say..heartwarming, courageous and so lovely. If you like CotBP, you should give OST a try. I absolutely loathed DMC and AWE, but OST managed to recapture a bit of the fun of the original, and Jack returns to being more of the sly Jack of Black Pearl instead of the Looney Toons buffoon they turned him into.

I couldn't handle Blackbeard. I think that Al Swearengen ruined any other antagonistic roles for Mcshane, for me, at least. The entire time I watched that film, all I could think about was how much of a ***** Blackbeard was, and how much better the film would've been had he been as well developed as Swearengen. Naturally, that's a lot to expect from a Disney action/adventure movie.:lol

The Dark Knight Rises - 8/10

Some things I didn't care for:

-Most of the fight scenes were pretty weak and awfully choreographed with bad guys with guns waiting for Batman or Catwoman to turn around and face them before they engaged them, which of course by that time it was too late and they would get easily disarmed.

-The entire police force was trapped yet they were able to send down cargo nets filled with food and supplies. Why couldn't they lift people to freedom then??

-The giant police vs Bane force charging scene was not my favorite. I honestly don't ever think the police would be that stupid to just charge from one direction on them. They would've at least attacked from all sides....and with some weapons lol.

-Batman vs Bane on the steps during that scene. I feel like it should've been staged in a different area. An area that was above everyone else or secluded from everyone else that was only them one on one. Also, the fighting in the background is awfully done as well if you pay attention to it.

Things I liked:

-Everything else.

For reference of the other movies in the trilogy:

Batman Begins - 10/10

The Dark Knight - 9.5/10

TheObsoleteMan
12-10-2012, 04:59 PM

Even though it's a clone that is drowing - he is still feeling that death every time it is done. And drowning would be a horrible way to go, imo. And I suppose yes, you would suspect the clones to catch on and maybe rebel - but Hugh is willing to let one die (and therefore so is the clone). The one that does the act and drowns is prepared to drown for his act to work knowing a new him will appear to repeat the cycle over and over again. His obsession to beat Bale's character with magic/illusion has made him a willing participant in what can only be a repetitive nightmare. And I think even if you knew you were about to fall into a tank and drown - it would still be horrifying each and every time. Knowing something is going to happen...and then have it happen and to know you are about to die a horrible death would be terrifying, which you see on their faces time and time again.

And yes Bale was a twin. For their act to be successful, they had to be able to be eachother (play as one) - which is why they had to share their wife/girlfriend...and we see how difficult that was for them and their unknowing partners. And how much more sad it was when one of the twins was killed (even though Hugh's character dies over and over again - his was a personal choice driven by ego). It's just an interesting concept, imo. Because of their act and rivalry with each other - they each lost a part of themselves and had to make such crazy sacrifices. Some more extreme than others. But all horrific in their own way. No one really wins in the end.

No one really wins in the end.Yeah I caught on to that after my last post. :lol Makes sense. I might watch it again and see if my opinion changes.

I hope you get around to seeing Rescue Dawn and The Fighter. He really was remarkable in both of those.

I LOVED 3:10. I thought Russel Crowe's character was fantastic.

With regards to the Prestige, technically, it was the original that stepped into the machine who drowned. But because the clone was such a perfect duplicate, the surviving Hugh felt like he never drowned at all and the person who stepped into the machine was transported. Essentially, both the clone and the original felt they were the one true Hugh. And at the same time, Hugh would drown every night as well--he just wasn't around afterwards to tell the tale.

Machine Gun Preacher 6.5/10
Not bad, but nothing great either. I really like Marc Foster the director. I'm one of the very few who prefers Quantum over Casino, and I love Stranger than Fiction. But this one was merely ok. Gerard Butler was good in it. It's good to see him doing some real acting instead of in dreck like than Jennifer Aniston movie or his latest, Playing For Keeps. What is he thinking? He definitely has talent, but his career is going nowhere quick with these roles he's picking.

X-MEN (2000) - 8.8/10

Such a great flick, i forgot how good it was, i remembered the theme instantly as it first played.

The opening with young Magneto was excellent, the introductions of Prof X, Magneto, Rogue, Logan, Storm and Cyclops were all great, the pacing was brilliant, it flowed so naturally. Mystique was awesomely introduced.

Mckellan was excellent as Magneto, likewise with Stewart. Their performances were excellent and their characters unique friendship made me appreciate McVoy and Fassbender even more.

It was unfortunatley too geared towards Wolverine and Rogue, more so Wolverine, it would've been better if Cyclops was given a bigger role as leader of the team (this is the same even to today with Iron Man taking the screentime away from Cap, the leader of The Avengers)

The effects were great, from Cyclops blasts, Mystiques transformations to Wolverines Claws. Magneto's magnetism was done to perfection from his base with areas only he could access with assembled metal bridges to the turning the guns on the police.

Action was servicable, Wolverine vs Mystique (when she blue) was good, Toad had some decent action (ruined in between by his prancing)

Casting was good all around. The only problems were the balancing of characters, Cyclops, Jean & Storm didn't get a whole lot to do sadly, the costuumes weren't accuracte to the comics but served their purpose of showing a united team adequately. The villains were mostly good only Toad stood out aa the weak presence.

Some people mistakenly believe that only modern superhero movies are the good ones, that they're better because they're new, after watching this again i realise that things haven't changed or need to change much, old ones are as just good as and in many cases better than new ones.

This is the first time watching it in years and even the coninuity wasn't changed as much as i thought, Sabertooths reactions to Wolverine with his affinity for his dogtags can still make him his brother, further animalisticly evolved, Wolverine's loss of memory coincides with Xaviers's dates mentioned and explains why he doesn't know him.
