I enjoyed Skyfall even more the 2nd time!

I don't know if others feel the same way, but I've noticed that I'm starting to enjoy an increasing amount of films the 2nd time I see them, more so than when I watched them the 1st time.

Just got done watching Barry Levinson's The Bay, produced by Levinson and Oren Peli (who directed Paranormal Activity). Extraordinarily creepy and utterly disturbing horror film. The shocks are real and the disturbing body horror that is going on in the film will leave you cringing but ultimately thinking about we are doing to ourselves and the world around us. And with what happened in New York and New Jersey last week with all the sea water flooding, you'll be especially freaked out. Best horror film of the year in my mind. And if you are paying close attention and are a Godzilla fan, you will definitely see an interesting allusion. 9/10.

Oddly enjoyable despite clearly being horribly dated in every way. I actually enjoyed it more than my recent viewing of The Spy Who Loved Me. Strange that they essentially remade that film with this one - and not even a gap of a few films between them.

I liked Argo. I was actually an extra in it. I don't know about his writing abilities though. This movie was based on real events and didn't need much in character development but I thought the Town was pretty bad. Good action scenes but the story was dumb as hell. Everyone was so one-dimensional and in the end he learned absolutely nothing and won nothing and we're supposed to think its "deep" because he stands alone by himself but its like they forgot to give the character a purpose around the whole bank robber thing and met the hostage girl thing. Jeremy Renner was like...angry the whole movie lol. C'mon guys was that character supposed to be anything else. "Tough best friend who is violent but loyal and then dies." That's not a character...am I right?

The Iron Koob
11-05-2012, 11:19 PM
Oh yeah and I saw Cloud Atlas. I thought the point was that their lives were connected to through all of life. So some actors played very different characters in different time periods that had nothing to do with other time periods, so why even have the same actor? And then at the end when they showed everyone and their roles I didn't even remember a lot of the characters. Idk it wasnt BAD but I kinda wish I just read the summary on wikipedia instead of wondering what the reveal would be after 3 hours just to say "was that it?"

^ That's one of two Bond movies I can't stand to watch. It's to me the second worst film in the whole series.

A View To A Kill is by far, hands down the worst.

For Your Eyes Only is Moores best, IMO.

FYEO I watched yesterday - I dunno. That opening sequence with Blofeld, the 70s action music (even if it was now the 80s), the annoying teenage girl.

I do probably have more childhood nostalgia attached to Octopussy and View to a Kill though. Kind of Indiana Jones-esque Bond films.

CelticPredator
11-06-2012, 07:22 PM
It's the humor. It doesn't work for me. It's just so goofy, even for Bond standards.

I can handle goofy dwarfs, trip nips, and even to a degree, a large steel jawed man falling in love with a nerdy pig taled girl...but Tarzan yell? Bond's rise from the dead? Him as a clown?

Eh, I draw the line. I never really liked those movies anyway.

a-dev
11-06-2012, 07:25 PM
Oh undoubtedly they do things in these films that you just wouldn't do with Bond today. But even Pierce Brosnans films are dated in their own way already.

CelticPredator
11-06-2012, 07:28 PM
Well, it isn't datedness that bothers me, I can watch and appreciate most of the Bond flicks for what they are, and the time they were in. But eh...those flicks just don't work for me on that level.

Moonraker works better for me there. Star Wars just came out...and it's all the rage...of course Bond went to space. :D

a-dev
11-06-2012, 07:36 PM
I of course watched Moonraker the other day. I can't believe how routine they, in only the late 70s, thought space-flight was or could be. ''Oh we've detected a large object in space - send up a ship full of space commandos with lazer guns to investigate and destroy it, easy peasy''.

Back then, and probably still today if they were doing it, they were sending people to the moon not really knowing for sure if they could even get them home and no possibility of rescue.

I just watched this one tonight and was just coming on here to rate it actually...5/10...Horrible film and didn't age well IMO. While I agree the title "Gangster Squad" could've been better, the trailer alone sells the movie more than enough for people to look past the title. The two times i went to see Skyfall, the Gangster Squad trailer was shown before, and I could hear people talking about it saying how good it looked. Visually I thought it was top notch, but that's about it.

John Connor was portrayed as someone I would not want to follow (he was just always pissed), Sam Worthongton's character was uneccesary, the Transformers were a ripoff, the T-600's were way too easy to spot, and not just because of their rubber skin, and the Arnie cameo not only looked bad, but was also not necessary.

Brilliant film. Has real emotional oomph, has a sense of realism and wonder about space travel that is lacking in most sci-fi these days including most of more recent Star Trek. Also probably the best soundtrack on a Trek film.

Raiders 10/10. Perfect

What a crap name for a film. :monkey3

I'm kinda glad I saw this though. Now I don't have to feel guilty about watching The Vampire Diaries. :lol

I'm still watching that, still enjoying it.

Terminator Salvation 7/10

I re-watched this recently and I think its very good for what it is. Not nearly as good as the first two, but loads better than 3. The actions scenes and CGI are top notch and I love the Arnold T-800 cameo at the end. I think the main problem is that people set their expectations too high.

That opening sequence is fantastic. I will never hold it up to the first 2 but I think it was decent. T3 was the real embarrassment.

James Bond Skyfall 10/10

One of the best Bond films ever made. This and Casino Royale are the best of the 23 films. The beginning sequence is probably jaw dropping. Finally know what "Q" refers to quartermaster

I always thought Pierce Brosman was the best bond ever. But after watching this movie, I have to say Daniel Craig reigns supreme. One of the best movie of 2013.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - 8/10

Wow, I'm surprised. I thought I remember this being worse, it is afterall one of the odd number films. I enjoyed it though, lots of really great stuff in it, not much that particularly jarred, good humour.

Its really only Star Trek V of the original cast films that falters, although maybe my memory of that one is wrong too.

On her majesty's secret service.

While I probably won't become a Lazenby fan, anytime soon, I must say the guy gets way more hate for that role, than he deserves. If I was to judge it based only on the opinions on the net, I would be prepearing myself for totaly rigid, wooden acting. In truth it was not half bad.

While in some scenes it shows, that he wasn't a professional actor and seemed a bit uncomfortable at times, but he also didn't make a complete fool out of himself during dialogues. More than that, despite his strong-jawed, australian alpha-male appearence, his version of Bond had a certain naive, romantic charm to it, as opposed to Connery's old-school chauvinism and arrogance.

He is also bloody fantastic in action scenes. Lazenby was a professional athlete, a big guy and a karateka, and it shows in the movie. Craig and Lazenby are the only two Bonds, who look like they can pack an actuall ****ing wholoop. It's a pity he resigned after just one movie. With a bit of practice and leaning into the role, he could turn into a really good Bond.

Star Trek Nemesis - anyone remember when Bane was the baddie in this film? - 7/10

It was decent. Just something about the TNG crew on the big screen was just never quite as good as the Original series cast.

I always felt Worf should have gotten a bit more focus instead of it always being Picard and Data. Worf was always cooler than Data.

My dad dragged me to that movie. It, and the other TNG movies made me loathe Star Trek with all my heart and soul.

Those movies put me to sleep.

The villian's death was a bit underwhelming imo, other than that I thought the movie was great.

It started out quite entertaining, but in the end it fell short... didn't feel like it had an ending at all.

Anatomy of a Murder - 4/10. I give it a litte love for Jimmy Stewart's courtroom performance and the frank handling of the subject matter, but an terribly weak ending leaves you wondering why you sat through the film.
