The Thing (2011) - 7/10

It was better than I was expecting. I thought it was cool how it tied into Carpenter's. I think the one big drawback was that Winstead just wasn't strong as the lead.

I actually like this movie, a lot of people cried about it, but I really enjoyed it and didnt think it was nearly as bad as people made out.

The problem w/ the Thing prequel is the lack of making me care about anyone in the cast. There just isn't enough time spent getting to know the characters like in the original. We needed another 10-15 minutes of development before all hell broke loose. The CGI is also quite terrible if you go and look at the original practical works created for the movie, and then go and watch what they ended up being it really is a joke. The first thing out looked amazing practically, the way it split open, the depth to the chest cavity etc, it was one of the realest looking practical effects I've ever seen, all they needed to add were the tenticles. Instead they covered the entire shot in CGI and as a result it loses all it's depth and looks clearly like a flat image, and theres no blood at all so when the skin tears it simply looks like someone photoshopping it to come apart very cleanly in 2 consise images instead of flesh being torn/pulled apart. It's just goofy.

All in all, it is a good movie, but when you compare it to Carpenter's, it's complete trash. None of that magic or confusion exists. In the prequel, we know when everyones a thing, who is, and how it happened. Carpenter himself admits in his he doesn't know what's happening or who's a thing when and how it happened and that confusion adds to the overall tension and rewatchability ten fold and then some.

Lars was awesome though and the ending was perfect.

Same here. I watched this movie last night and enjoyed every minute of it. I actually watched the original not long before watching the remake. I mean there is nothing earth shattering new about from the original story wise but the effects are done very well and just the whole movie had a really good feeling to it. A simple story really but again I enjoyed it and would watch it again. :)

Deckard
10-24-2012, 09:42 AM
It's a shame what could have been, with the practical effects less toned down, I'd be more forgiving. Covering them completely over with the CGI ruined them all for me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBzpT7VmSaU&feature=related

They were supposed to only use CGI for touchups but then went back and reworked everything instead.

The original ending would have been far superior as well, instead they decided to create that completely CGId Halvorson Thing at the last second and it shows, it's clearly poor CGI.

Considering Carpenter's Thing is to this day a prime example of practical effects at their finest, to have it bookended by a movie showcasing some of the worst CGI in modern memory is just a shame.

What makes The Shining and The Thing such excellent movies. They take their time to show us these people and how real they feel with the way they interact and come to bond, as well as playing up the isolation and paranoia of who you can or can't trust.

It's a cop out today to say well, we root for Jason or Freddy. In the original Halloween or original NOES, I don't root for them because there is enough character development to make me care about the victims instead. The sequels then push aside any further development and depend on our bloodlust and infatuation with the slasher. Pretty much exactly what im seeing with the new Evil Dead trailer. Depending on the idea we all know and tons of torture porn. Does zippo for me.

Unfortunately, movie goers nowadays have short attention spans and unless they're seeing a giant robot transforming in the first 5 or 10 minutes of the movie they're bored. That's why there's so much focus on action/speeding up the story as opposed to previous films that would usually spend the first hour or so of the movie simply setting up the story/characters.

This movie was awesome! The Nazis fled to the moon at the end of WWII to come back and invade in 2018.
The movie is as crazy as this sounds, but in a good way. The story, while completeley insane, is actually pretty cool, the action and SFX are amazing as well especially for the low budget they had. There are some moments where it looks quite outdated, but those are not many.
The movie is filled with humorous remarks and situations and had me laughing out loud a number of times. It also didn't hurt that the female lead was pretty hot! :naughty :lol

my rating on this fluctuates but I enjoyed the last viewing there. Some stuff annoys me though - most particularly the way no one considers even for a second using time travel again to undo the damage done by Nero. Considering old Spock pioneered a time travel method in Star Trek IV to help save Earth it seems a bit inconsistent and ridiculous that it wouldn't occur to him to do the same thing again to save his own planet.

Maybe cause it wasn't in the script :dunno :lol

It should have been. In Star Trek-land, far as I'm concerned, this counts as a plothole. Undoing damage to the time continuum, or whatever its called, has never before been a problem. And although I like that this new Trek stands to be different (god knows Trek needed to be made fresh again) theres really no reason that the events of this film could not be reversed. Old Spock of all people should know this.

Skyfall - 5.5/10

Have to say, very disappointed in this film. Great first hour, but the rest... meh. Bad Bond villian IMO, slow story, unremarkable ending... I did like Q, though, and Daniel Craig is always great onscreen. Overall, too much old Bond for my liking, too many one liners and nods to the past. And the London section was boring...

I got stuck watching 50 First Dates last night. I have seen it before but I usually avoid it because it makes me feel...well...unmanly.

But I figured I could handle it this time...I was wrong.

I would give it about 7.5/10, normally. But the assault on my testosterone offends me...2.5/10.

Poster Boy - it's an older film, but has a great cast including Karen Allen. It was a little slow and some of the camera work was nauseating, but overall well done. KA did an excellent job which makes her 'acting' in KOTCS even more disappointing.

Sinister 5.5 / 10

I would not call this a scary movie...I would call it a creepy movie. No where in the film was I scared, mainly I was bored. Basically the movie is kind of hollow and the ending is not a huge surprise ( although I did not know who the killer was nearly the entire time). To be honest, I wish it was not supernatural...just seemed to me it could have been better that way and more "Sinister".

Snow White and the Huntsmen 6.5 / 10

To be honest, I only watched this flick because I had a free rental from Redbox. It almost reminded me of Alice in Wonderland ( in respects to how the film looked ). Pretty much stuck to the story of Snow White with its own twist. It was decent enough for a $1 rental from red box and surprisingly, I like it more than I thought I would

The Arrival - DVD 6.5 / 10

I have seen this movie a few times before but recently I purchased a used copy on ebay for a few bucks because it was never on Netflix. I think Charley Sheen is a great actor and loved him in the role of Zane...most of the other acting, however...was horrible. Love the concept of this movie and I think it keeps your pretty interested in the story throughout the film. The annoying kid in the movie makes me want to pull my eyes out...horrible actor. Most of the other's were at least bearable enough to enjoy the film. Overall, I think its a very under appreciated Alien flick.

( The Arrival #2 was a second movie on the other side of the disc...I got through 1/3 of it before I turned it off...HORRIBLE movie! )

It's hard to categorise this movie. While the first part has elements of a typical horror the second part is so depressing and hard to watch and stomach. It's certainly not for the faint at heart. As far as my best ever TV show list I'd stick Spartacus in there somewhere near or at the top.Have you seen Game of Thrones? I thought it was much better than Spartacus (though Spartacus is fantastic).

Still some shows I haven't watched, but from what I have seen I'd say:

1. Game of Thrones
2. Walking Dead (season 1)
3. Spartacus
4. Boardwalk Empire

I think the first season of Walking Dead was absolutely perfect, everything since then I've sort of been disappointed with.
Spartacus: Vengeance didn't feel the same at all without Andy Whitfield. I really enjoyed Gannicus' character though.

Revenge of the Sith - 4/10 at best

Hello RIDDICK.

I don't dispute that rating but your judgement is lacking if you think this movie is worse than AOTC....like you said in the "What are you watching? The sequel" thread. :rotfl

From my point of view your judgement is lacking!

:slap Oh my I just paraphrased that crap film I just watched didn't I.

Well anyway, this bickering is pointless. They're all crap (I-III), let us no longer argue over which is moreso.

Phantom Menace is the least offensive though

One of if not the best twist endings in movie history

Agreed... and I just love me a twist ending.

Kudos for the high score. I'd give it the same. :hi5:

Watched Die Another Day. Hadn't seen it in years.

The first half of the movie is really, really good. It has one of the best Bond plots...almost ever. Bond is in a place he's never been before. A broken, lost man.

Then he meets Halle Barry, and the movie takes a huge nosedive.

Then the genetic crap comes into play, and it goes down harder. That being said, I do like the idea of the villain changing his face after he dies. I think that character is really interesting. It just...didn't need to go that bizzare. And then the ice place, invisible car, the horrible HORRIBLE puns, and just about the most over the top CGI filled sequence in the series.....it just sucks. Ultimately.

But that first 20-30 minutes though, that's some great stuff. Wish the movie was more like that.

5/10

Watching World is Not Enough Now. Jumping around the box set in no order.

Safety Not Guaranteed - 8/10

Good film with mostly a cast of unknowns apart from Chloe from 24 in a small role. A magazine reporter and 2 interns (the female of whom is the lead character) investigate a guy who has placed an ad requesting a time travelling partner. It doesn't play in any way like a science fiction film, more like a road-trip rom-com type thing. You and the characters question whether the guy is just a wierdo or if he really can time travel.

Wreck-it Ralph 8/10. Lots of video game nostalgia, and excellent voice acting by Reilly and Silverman.

Man with the Iron Fists 3/10. Ugh. I should have known I was in trouble when I saw that Eli Roth co-wrote this crap, but it did start off with potential. But like Hobo with a Shotgun, if you're trying to make a bad movie on purpose, then you need everyone to be bad, not half the cast strong (Crowe and Lui) and the rest truly terrible. The writing was obvious and silly, and like most films with Roth involved, the gore was so over the top, gratuitous and ridiculous (and poorly done) that it caused everyone to laugh. Skip this garbage and re-watch Kill Bill.

Just looking at the trailer Iron Fist looks garbage. I'm surprised Crowe did this film. I remember when he was supposed to be fussy & debated doing films like Gladiator. Still a great actor though

So I watched a few more Bonds.

World Is Not Enough 7/10

Underrated Bond flick. Pierce is the best in this. I also enjoyed the story. Eleckta King is a really cool Bond Girl/Villain. I liked Renhard, despite his Blowfield ripoff.

Action is fun, the effects are good enough.

Downside....easily Christmas Jones. Ugh.

Also watched License to Kill. I used to love this. But eh. Not as good. It's still alright, and Dalton is awesome. So 6.5/10.
