Uhhh...I dunno. Maybe I'm just the wrong generation to really enjoy a 70s movie that isn't Jaws, Star Wars or Alien. This bored me, seemed to drag out quite a bit.

The Avengers - 9.5/10

I originally scored this a 10, and as a theatrical experience I still think that score was justified, but I knocked off half a point here because viewing it at home on a smaller screen without a packed crowd feeding off each other's energy lessens the impact slightly, but only slightly.

Yep, I don't understand why this film isn't appreciated more. It was talked about briefly in an Arnie interview in the latest issue of Empire and there wasn't really anything nice said about it. I don't understand. I think its biggest problem was going up against Jurassic Park in the cinema that year.

:lolOh is that the reason?:yuck

The movie sucked, it's not nearly as clever as it pretends to be. It's biggest problem was that its meant to be funny and scary, but fails at both. The intentional bad acting was also kind of lame. And I find it hilarious that you say cabin in the woods "Deconstructs" horror movies. The Truman Show meets Evil Dead meets The Cube. :rotfl

It costed 85 mill to make and took in 50 mill domestically. Worldwide it made 137 mill. So it failed miserably domestically but did make a small profit overall. I suppose when comparing it to T2 (released 2 years earlier) it was a huge failure.

No, it lost $27 million. That's the official loss (Sony!?) declared. Remember, movie studio's don't rake in 100% of the box office. And money that's spent for promotion isn't included in the budget number either. So all in all, after everything was said and done that flick lost $27 million.

Kamandi
09-26-2012, 11:27 AM
I think the backlash was from when The Last Action Hero was originally released. The advertising and promotion at the time didn't prepare people they were about to see a satire. It looked like it was going to be another straight-forward action flick. John McTiernan was directing, he's best known for the first Die Hard and Hunt for Red October. Schwarzenegger had just been in T2. Many people were expecting a new Ahhnuld film franchise.

I think the movie holds up fine. I'm not one of those people that call a movie dated because it's special effects are now old.

It's part of the charm.

Like in Frankenstein, not a huge fan of the flick, but I loved the last half of the movie where they're chasing him through the mountains with that crumbled sky background. You can clearly tell it's a set and backdrop...but that's a part of it's charm.

Not really responding to you, but to those that dismiss the movie now due to it's effects.

Indeed. In fact in some cases I prefer the old effects to the new. CGI becomes dated in its own ways that can be more jarring to me than the ways in which, say, the stop-motion ED-209 in Robocop has dated.

I don't think special effects are the only thing some people mean when they talk about a movie being dated though - it can be anything from the tone to political incorrectness and whatnot, cartoony or overly choreographed action or something. Having said that this sort of stuff can also be 'part of the charm' as you said.

^ If I watched there, its a 5 out of 10. The best moments are cut. :lol

Which begs the question: If you take away graphic violence, nudity and swearing.. how good ARE most films? Because I'm the same way. I might like a movie and give it a 10 (on my modified rating scale) but if I were rating the same movie based on the version seen on regular TV with all that stuff cut out ALL those ratings would drop. Some movies are completely unwatchable like that too. :lol

CelticPredator
09-26-2012, 08:48 PM
Indeed. I know people might say "Well, then you didn't enjoy the movie!"

Not true. Goodfellas is a fantastic film. But watching it on TV kills almost all the impact it had.

Same with Pulp Fiction and other Tarantino flicks.

Devil_666
09-26-2012, 08:49 PM
So would you consider that a crutch?

CelticPredator
09-26-2012, 08:57 PM
I didn't catch the "so how good ARE most films" line, so I don't entirely agree. :lol

But I do think the film is the film. And when you take things away from it, it loses it's impact. Regardless.

Unless it's something like Resident Evil where the violence doesn't make it any better or worse, usually most good flicks use violence correctly.

Or languge. You lose the impact of John McClain saying "Yippie Ki Yay Mother ****er" if you replace it with "Mister Falcon" or something else. The line doesn't work, and it's not funny or clever. It just is.

Or the scene where Vince blows off poor Marvin's head in Pulp. Sure, you can cut it out, and it wouldn't change the flick, but that jump and massive amount of violent shock is lost.

Paranorman - 6/10

So i took my nephews to see this. It was alright, i wasn't a fan of the animation style but that wasn't a dealbreaker.

It was basically a horror film disguised as a kids movie, the story was quite dark for a kids film... Talking to the dead, zombies, witches curse ect.

There were some scenes where the evil characters would scream and their face would transform to a monster and their head shake for a brief second it wasn't scary to me and my neohews weren't scared either but when i was five that'd scare the bejeesus outta me.

So it was okay just not for kids imo and kinda creepy

Wasn't it the other way around? I keep hearing it was "overrated" There's something about survival/band of brother type movie that sucks me in.

I'm gonna watch it again tonight.

Considering how everyone forgot about it, and or hated it because they expected what the trailer stated it was, it isn't talked about too much.

It's a movie I probably wouldn't want to watch again for a while. But it still stuck with me.

Haven't seen that since the one and only time I saw it around when it first came out....so quite awhile then.

I was expecting quite a different movie and... was surprised.
Not unique but still good.

American Werewolf in London.
This classic never gets old for me. 8/10.

Great film. The fx still hold up against modern fx. The werewolf transformation is well done.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance - 5.5/10 - Not the complete flaming turd people said it was, but that isn't to say it's good. Surprising though is how bad Cage's Blaze is seeing how that was the best part of the first flick.

The Raid: Redemption - 8/10 - Holy **** this movie was violenty awesome. The comparisons with Dredd are there, but different enough the two movies are not the same. But yea, great action. Subtitled but I don't recall ready any captions. :lol

Recently went through my new Universal Monsters Blu-Ray set...

Dracula (1931) - 9/10
Frankenstein (1931) - 9/10
The Mummy (1932) - 7/10
The Invisible Man (1933) - 8/10
Bride of Frankenstein (1935) - 8/10
The Wolf Man (1941) - 9/10
Phantom of the Opera (1943) - 7/10
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) - 7/10

Even though the scares somewhat pale in comparison to modern day horror, these movies are still incredibly enjoyable, and there is no denying the significance of these films. They DEFINE the horror movie genre.

I just wish they had included the 1925 Lon Chaney Sr. version of The Phantom of the Opera!

Okay, I am a Universal Monsters nut. I used to watch all the movies with my mom on PBS every Saturday night as a child. Own the box set with the SSC busts (minis), and have PFs of Dracula and Frankenstein. Well, Frank is more-so a 1/3 scale custom job. Gorgeous!

Having said all of that, the movies, Dracula 1931 in particular are not deserving of a 9/10 score. We see no character development, and at the end, it feels as though half a movie is lost... Van Helsing says, "Dracula is dead", but we don't see his death or get any explanation as to how he died. lol I imagine a stake to the heart. I get it was a different time then, and violence and death on screen was probably not condoned. Love the set pieces though. In the end, I still love the nostalgia of it, but I can't see past the minuses. hehe

Welcome to the Jungle - 5/10

It was ok, pretty much a modern day Cannibal Holocaust. The whole shakey cam type set up. A group of dumb asses go searching for a missing man that they heard legends about deep in the jungles of New Guinea. Yup thats it.

Rob Zombie's Halloween 2

2/10

I've seen it a couple times but it's been a while since the last time.

There is very little that I like about this movie.
I would even go as far as to say that I hate it.
And I actually really enjoy the first RZ Halloween.
Which ofcourse has it's flaws too. But I still love it.
Part 2 though......ew

I feel like this movie makes Michael too human.
It explains his motivation too much.

It's kind of cool to think that the whole mother/white horse type of stuff might be happening inside of his head and driving him.
But I'd rather not see it.
His motivation should be mostly a mystery to the audience and the people in the movie.

-------------------------

I also watched "Dracula Vs. Frankenstein" today.
What absolute terrible ****. :lol

Dollar store makeup,Speaking through a toilet paper role voice Dracula was awful.

Frankenstein's monster had the worst makeup of all time.
Looked like his face was made out of sun baked turds.

I feel bad for Lon Chaney Jr. having been in this movie.

Negative 10

As I mentioned, Universal horror was genre defining, Bela Legosi's Dracula is probably THE most famous incarnation of the character, and these movies made the horror movie genre what it is today.

These movies are around 80 years old, and they were made to the cinematic standards of what was available and expected at the time. Surely you cannot expect 21st century dialogue, cinematography, character development etc? They still create a sense of eeriness and uncertainty, which make them great movies in my opinion.

I'm sure in 2092, when cinematic standards have changed again, your great great grandson will tear The Avengers apart lol ;)

"The Avengers is just SO 2010's" lol :rotfl:hi5:

Hey Mr. Drama Queen, relax. I am a fan. I have all the movies beside me, and I did bring up what were the times then. As a period piece, it was probably a decent movie. Fair enough, but it hasn't aged gracefully in terms of story telling, character development, and all that other stuff... Anyway, I just don't agree with you. And how would we be wrong if you did? Because it's fact? It's called subjection. There is a fine line between the two. Figure it out.

Anyway, too many movies get far too many easy grades on here. I love my Dracula for what it was.. interesting set pieces for the time and a cool looking grampa vampire (which I own the PF of, and absolutely love). Anyway, I said good day. I SAID GOOD DAY!

I give it, 4 out of 10 for what it really is. A bonus (ummmm) 2.5 for nostalgia, because as a kid I was enthralled with the character and the old black and white monster films. So by that math, it's 6.5 out of 10. Adding is fun! Damn, nostalgia rocks the grade!

P.S. Terminator 2 was released in 1991 and it hasn't aged one bit. Minus some hair styles, outfits, and cars.. but who's being picky? Oh right... we are. *squints eyes*
