I think the English (American) title is The Last Circus.
It's kind of a weird watch... there is humor, drama and sadness, but also a lot of over the top action and some horrorstuff. It was only while watching it that I figured the whole film is supposed to be as versatile and crazy like a clown's act.

The Truman Show - 7.5/10

Justified, Episode 1. 10/10. Picked Justified up in Season 3. Just now going back to watch earlier seasons. Phenomenal. Maybe this, and Walking Dead, can fill the void left when 24 and The Unit went off-the-air. May even give Elmore Leonard's novels a try.

Burn After Reading ... 7/10. Weird movie. Amusing and off-beat anti-spy movie. No-stakes espionage ... none of the characters are important enough to know anything useful, or bright enough to do anything right. Ends in a mess ... with amusing epilogues as CIA higher-ups try to figure out what the hell happened.

No Country for Old Men ... 9.5/10. Really great movie. Short on words, high on drama. As it should be. Chigurh is up there with Lecter and Joker among the great villains. I need to read the book.

Batman Forever ... 6/10. Not terrible. Actually like it better than Returns. Would've been A LOT better if Tommy Lee Jones had played Two Face straight, rather than comedically. Two Face is not Joker. I think Carrey's Riddler also would've worked better if Jones had been more hardcore as Harvey Dent. I really think Jones could've completely changed the feel of that movie had he been more understated. Kilmer was good, Robin a bit too old. Not a fan of Kidman, though.

The Thing (prequel) - 7/10

A decent companion piece to Carpenter's masterpiece, but it doesn't bring anything particularly compelling to the table. The cast of characters is completely uninteresting. This one definitely plays up the monsters over the who's who paranoia, but the cgi works well so it makes for some cool scenes. The ending felt tacked on as hell, almost as if they decided to throw it in there at the last second.

I guess we're supposed to assume Mary Elizabeth Winstead froze to death? The vehicle she was in appeared to have power, so I'm not sure why she couldn't get back to camp. Man, that ending was really clunky.

I agree, it slavishly held to the mythos of the John Carpenter film rather than bringing anything unexpected to the table. Which would have been alright if the film had a lead that came close to Kurt Russel's screen presence, which it didn't. I give this pedantic outing 6/10.

Apparently they're having a Timothy Olyphant weekend on FX.

Die Hard 4/ Live Free or Die Hard ... 8/10. Solid Die Hard movie. McClane in the wrong place, at the wrong time again ... though more out-of-his-league with the high tech terrorist plot. I actually liked the geeky hacker kid more than I thought I would. Olyphant is a capable villain ... he's no Hans Gruber -- who is? -- but he's good enough. Action sequences were solid ... though the F34 vs. the semi-truck was way over-the-top. Kevin Smith was amusing in his cameo. I'd rate it even with Die Hard 3. Better than 2. The original Die Hard is as untouchable as Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Hitman ... 5/10. Never played the games. Movie was a pretty mundane action plot with a brooding assassin and a useless chick. Made somewhat better by Olyphant, though. Had a bit of a bald, bar-coded Raylan Givens vibe. There were some cool weapons and gunfights, though, which I guess was the whole point. I still don't get why anyone would want a bunch of assassins with bald heads and bar codes. Assassins usually don't want to stand out in a crowd.

Hugo 6/10 - I agree complete with JJ. Heavy handed, dull plotting, with little in the way of any real drama. Beautiful movie - not much else. I do love Chloe though!

Lorax 6/10 - cute kid flick, not much more. Some critics have gone off the deep end going overboard about it being some sort of raping of Seuss, but it's a reasonable approximation of the original story, which wasn't one of the doc's better works in the first place.

having seen this 4 times now, I obviously really love this movie. It's like an Indiana Jones film in a way. The animation and the mocap/acting is superb. While I do feel some parts dragged or stopped the pacing of the film to a halt, the story was good and always kept me wanting more. All the characters translated well and were likable even Haddock. I really hope they continue to make more.

Just watched the trailer for this. Appears to be a Pink Panther knock off. How does it compare?

The trailer doesn't do the film justice, like most trailers rarely do. While you do get a feeling that it comes from the same school of Blake Edwards, although almost everyone in these films are caricatures of typical archetypes in film, but the main character isn't a bumbling fool like Clouseau. He's much more of a naive and ignorant character that is full of himself but can back it up with his abilities yet still be very childish at times. Despite all these "flaws" he's very likable and sweet and always means well. Like one of the characters mentions in the film after making an ignorant comment about Egypt, he's "very French".

Within it all there's a bit of social commentary of the times, with how countries saw each other and probably still do, and the camp comes from parodying the old 60s spy films with certain shots, staging, gestures, drinking, womanizing, and even the typical "judo chop" makes it's way in.

It does a good job of drawing the line and walking it, making sure it doesn't cross over into complete self awareness and over the top camp. There are ongoing gags but nothing ridiculous. I would say those same ongoing gags, for example flashbacks that carry over to the 2nd film make that film weaker though.

For a thriller it was BORING! I was bored out of my brains!

Can you tell me why they felt the need for the transponder? Could they not just stay on the run? If they felt the need to kill Marissa could they not do that together with the element of surprise?

What was with the very dull ''backpacking'' with the hippy family? BORING!

It's not a thriller, so if you had those expectations I could see why you're disappointed. It's a modern day reimaging of childhood fairy tales and as is the case with most fairy tales it's focus is all about childhood. A childhood lost, stolen, repurposed, perverted, reclaimed, and discovered. Wright is more than blunt with his imagery and symbology with this and it's really my only major complaint with the film. He could have been a little more subtle.

This is how I have seen it advertised many a time

That ends up being the problems with most movies to people. They want a movie to be one thing, because the studios market it to them that way, but they never let the film be what it is.

You are aware that was not the real movie right? It was the studio edited, reshot version. I'd imagine the directors cut is far superior.

And yes, I love the steam punk design. Loved everything inside the work place.

I was actually impressed with this one and thought it was the strongest of the three. I may be alone in that but I'm used to it :yess:

Nope not alone. I really liked 3. It's actually the only one I enjoyed out of them all. The first two I was bored out of my mind and didn't really understand the hype around them.

Hugo - 7.5/10

Visually beautiful and some fine performances, especially from Chloe Moretz, but it feels like a meandering stroll to nowhere in particular. It's part drama/part pseudo documentary, and neither aspect is completely fulfilling. If you're a fan of silent films, I'd give it watch. If not, steer clear.

Well it's understandable, it's not "Western" enough to be a true Western and not "Alien" enough to be a real sci-fi Alien movie. So it's a weird result. But I liked everyone in it and thought the concept/Aliens were cool.

Just came back from seeing this! I loved it!
The story was awesome, as well were the characters, action and acting. I really hope people will go see this, even though the marketing for this film has pretty much sucked so far. This film deserves to be watched by many! For a 100 year old story, that has inspired a lot of today's classic sci-fi films, it remains to be refreshing and original IMO.

I completely agree! :lecture I went to see it by chance (i.e. the GF wanted to see it), expecting it to be pure garbage, and Wow, what a surprise! Really entertaining with great scenes. Loved it! I hear you. I thought this movie might be different since it was granted a theater run (and I though the poster looked cool). I liked the Jaws movies (at least 1 and 2) and Deep Blue Sea...but this movie is in the Jaws the Revenge realm. If you do want to watch it, I suggest a rental when you have time to kill. But watch it with low expectations and an understanding that you aren't getting a quality shark movie.
