Just minor pacing issues I still have with this, notably during the courting of Shoshana by Zoller and the bar. I feel like the game goes on just ever too slightly long. In fact its really the SS Officer's explanation but it does go a long way to aggravating Hugo and building the suspense.

You ever seen The Verdict, 12 Angry Men (1957 Version), Jagged Edge, The Rainmaker, Suspect or 12 (Russian Version of 12 Angry Men)?

Some other good courtroom dramas.

Fast Five: 8/10 Just came back from seeing this at the theatre. I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised. This film was awesome, dare I say the best of them so far?
They traded in the street racing type of film, for a heist film. And what a heist film. It's like Ocean's Eleven on steroids! :rock
The story is pretty simple, the acting pretty mediocre, but it totally makes up for those flaws with awesome action! This film definitely does what it is meant to do: Entertaining the audience with crazy, over-the-top car chases and action! Definitely worth checking out in the theatre! :rock :rock :rock

Great movie. Natalie and Milla were great, of course. That character Natalie played was so utterly damaged! I went to an arts high school (for art, not dance :lol), so I knew a lot of dancers. And I gotta say there were a few that were similar to the main character, in that they were very frigid and only lived to dance and were a little too mommied.

Priest 3D

What do you get if you borrow the look of Blade Runner for the city scenes, add a large dose of The Searchers plot, take a plot point from Golden Eye, steal some scenes from Aliens, 30 days of night and the Road Warrior, then have some stuff from games like Castlevania. And don't forget to add a piece of dialogue from The Empire Strikes Back? You get Priest. Sounds like I thought it was a mess, and I hated it, but I actually thought it was fairly enjoyable in places, and the action was good. The film picks up half way through after a plodding first half . Bettnay phoned it again, and Karl Urban did the best with what he was given. No way should you see this full price or in 3D, but it might be fun to see on NetFlix

The movie isn't too far off from the book. The biggest story change was who becomes Pope. In the book, Dan Brown goes into such rich history and detail about the settings and architecture of Rome, that it almost becomes a major role in itself. That's what the movie lacked. I still agree with your rating, though. Good movie.

Watched this twice, first time was sort of adjusting, 2nd time I felt ok about pretty much everything. My biggest problem was not making everything before this obsolete, which didn't feel like it was necassary, but whatever, but was Kirk finding old Spock and then Scotty like that. Way too convenient, destiny, time constraints and movie magic aside. It just felt like very sloppy writing.

I'll probably watch it again soon, it's unlike anything I've seen, and so is Mark but in a strange but good way. He's definately an interesting character with alot of imagination and the movie does an excellent job of portraying what's strange about him while at the same time making you really root for him because he's so geniune. It's really about acceptance of whatever it is that makes other people happy, especially when it doesn't hurt anyone.

Die Hard with a Vengeance - 7/10

Great action, especially the taxi, but I've always thought it has a terribly weak ending.

Agree (except I give it a full 10). I kinda go back to that one more often than the original, just cos the dialogue and banter is so fun. It also has such a great brisk pace and energy. The first one is still untouchable, but the third one is just such a blast (pun intended)!

As far as the ending, I agree. I recommend watching the alternate ending (on the DVD and presumably on the Blu Ray). It's much more satisfying.

From Wikipedia:
An alternative ending to the one shown in the final movie was filmed with Irons and Willis, set some time after the events in New York. It can be found on the special edition DVD. In this version it is presumed that the robbery succeeds, and that McClane was used as the scapegoat for everything that went wrong. He is fired from the NYPD after more than 20 years on the force and the FBI has even taken away his pension. Nevertheless he still manages to track Simon using the batch number on the bottle of aspirins and they meet in a cafe in Hungary.
In this version, Simon has double-crossed most of his accomplices, gotten the loot to a safe hiding place (Nova Scotia), and has the gold turned into statuettes of a famous landmark (in this case the Empire State Building) in order to smuggle it out of the country; but he is still tracked down to his foreign hideaway. This is very similar to Alec Guinness's situation in the British heist movie The Lavender Hill Mob made some 45 years earlier in which the stolen gold is turned into Eiffel Tower paperweights.
McClane is keen to take his problems out on Simon whom he invites to play a game called "McClane Says". This involves a form of Russian Roulette with a small Chinese rocket launcher with the sights removed, meaning it cannot be determined which end is which. McClane then asks Simon some riddles similar to the ones he played in New York. When Simon gets a riddle wrong, McClane forces him at gunpoint to fire the launcher, which fires the rocket through Simon, killing him. Of course, McClane had been wearing a flak jacket (which was the answer to the final riddle "what could he have brought to the meeting to save his life?"), so even if Simon had pointed the launcher the right way, it is likely that the relatively low-velocity rocket would not have caused McClane enough injury to prevent him from shooting Simon.
In the DVD audio commentary, screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh claims that this version was dropped because the studio thought it showed a more cruel and menacing side to McClane, a man who killed for revenge rather than in self-defense. Hensleigh's intention was to show that the events in New York and the subsequent repercussions had tilted him psychologically. This alternative ending, set some time after the main events of the movie, would have marked a serious break from the Die Hard formula, in which the plot unfolds over a period of roughly 12 hours.
According to the DVD audio commentary, a second alternate ending had McClane and Carver floating back to shore on a makeshift raft after the explosion at sea. Carver says it is a shame the bad guys are going to get away; McClane tells him not to be so sure. The scene then shifts to the plane where the terrorists find the briefcase bomb they left in the park and which Carver gave back to them (in this version it was not used to blow up the dam). The movie would end on a darkly comic note as Simon asks if anyone has a 4 gallon jug. This draft of the script was rejected early on, and unlike the rocket-launcher sequence, was never actually filmed.

Deckard

I'd have to watch it but from what I read, I can't say I like either of those ideas any better.

My problem with it as is, is that it feels like a.) McClane really does lose and needs an entire police force to turn the tables. b.) they set it up as if theres going to be a big shoot out with the terrorists all arming up, and then none of them resist arrest, and c.) it makes McClane seem incredibly clumsy and stupid to have put himself in that helicopter situation where they aren't even armed. Its not the typical wrong place wrong time thing, its McClane straight up underestimating this guy, again after the events of the movie where hes shown access to all kinds of vehicles ranging from massive boats to underground drills? Just waaaay out of character.

Would have been better if it all wrapped up on the boat in new york imo. Maybe a similar attempted helicopter escape but McClane figures out a way to tip one of his bullets in the explosives and fire it to take down the chopper or whatever, but the way it is now just kills the pacing and again, makes McClane really look like a doofus.

Very divisive film. You don't see many in between scores. I fall on the it's brilliant side however.

Edit: As disturbing as some of the themes in this film are; a film that was nominated for best foreign film at the Oscars this past year disturbed me more. It's called Dogtooth and is available for instant view on Netflix if you have it. It's a great but wickedly disturbing film.

POTC 3 : At Wits End - 4/10 and thats generous but its pretty much all for the Cinematographer.

Why does Jack even bother calling himself Captain? He gives like zero orders ever, Will and Barbossa spend far more time in command of the Pearl.

The what Arr you doing joke was painful.

Who killed the Kraken? How? The Pearl didn't even hurt it. It also didn't seem large enough.

Whats Teague's title, why does everyone fear him, is he not nullified by the king?

Tia Dhalma's 50 foot woman scheme was just stupid. No way the deck could hold her.

The marriage was insanely bad.

Becket walking down the exploding ship? So lame. We get it hes the bad guy and he's f'd.

The entire ending was so over the top retarded it made me dislike the characters. I am actually rooting for Blackbeard to kill everyone including Jack now. Jacks a scumbag willing to kill hundreds of others and his crew to live and he dies anyway, and he just sucks at commanding a ship. Theres a reason he keeps getting mutinied, I wouldn't serve under a douche like that, that doesn't even go after treasure.

The only thing I laughed at was little jack pulling a gun on the parrot and even that was stupid.

Watched Highlander today. Havent seen it in years. Yeah its dated, some of the scenes are badly acted and the lightening fx are laughable but you know what I still love it! Clancey Brown as The Krugan is still thoroughly repulsive. He steals the show! Awesome.

I hear ya, the first 30+ mins of the film were "brilliant" imo. The realism (acting) was there but as it dragged on I felt that the director had nothing left but filler (if that makes sense) Its almost like he poured everything into the first half (or less) of the film and then fell short with its body and finish. It was somewhat redundant at times too. I suppose giving it a 3 was a tad harsh.

I've never heard of Dogtooth, i'm sure i'll get around to that one soon though.

The Magnificent Seven: Appropriately. . .7/10

I saw this once before, but it had been awhile. Classic, iconic set-up (obviously, since it's been rehashed so often over the years), well directed, a great ensemble cast, great bad guy, a fair amount of nifty subtext and issues with the "seven", reasonably happy ending. . .but still not in the top tier of classic westerns, IMO.

Jeremiah Johnson: 7.5/10

First time I saw this one, and it was damn good. Epic feel to this movie, with Robert Redford giving as good a performance as I've seen him give. Pretty awesome how he morphs into a bad-ass killing machine, also.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone -- 10/10

Biased as always. Love every single HP movie. Been a while since watching this one, I forgot how cute and tiny all the youngens of the cast were.

The King's Speech -- 9/10

Brilliant movie. All the performances were done wonderfully. Colin Firth stammered so well for so long that I wanted to punch him in the face after a while so he would get over it. It was that good. After a long stretch of watching HP movies, it was refreshing to see Helena Bonham Carter in a different role, and she did extremely well. I enjoyed that most of the movie there was no music or score. Geoffrey Rush was hilarious in practically every scene of his.

Thor 3D - 8/10 - Pretty good for a Marvel movie. The cast was well done and Asgard looked great. Nice FX.

Priest 3D - 6/10 - Thought it was a decent action flick. The main Priest guy and Black Hat were kewl. Pretty much the world of Judge Dredd with vampires.

I'm with you, but even then I have my limits. Like with the Pirate movies I just watched as I pointed out, they established from part 1 their was going to be supernatural elements, I just don't like it when they mix that with regular human people. In other words I would have preferred Jack push the envelope but not do straight up impossible feats such as fighting Davy Jones on a top sail, especially as I say, when you have characters who are ghosts etc already capable of adding that element to the story. Davy Jones on a top sail is believeable because he can just Ghost up there and ghost down if he loses his balance. At a certain point if just feels like your whoring out your characters for a laugh and I despise that to clever writing. If your stuck write your way but don't compromise a character that we've established over 2 films and 6 years in order to move on to the next idea as quickly as possible.

When the hell is being stupid ever fun? Why should your enjoyment be predicated on the idea that you must first be an idiot? I just don't get it. Entertainment to me shouldn't correlate with mental deficiency.

Edit: I'm not saying people are wrong for liking different things or that people can't enjoy whatever they want. That's to be expected. I'm simply saying that there should be a better argument than the just play Corky for 2 hours and it'll entertain you, or that someone thinks too much and therefore can't possibly be entertained.

I really wouldn't call this a simple movie. There are a lot of layers to what's going on. I think the starkness of the station and the moon itself make it feel simple, but it's more emptiness and loneliness that it's actually conveying.

Rockwell was amazing, and I like that GERTY wasn't the obligatory bad robot, although you think it might be in the beginning. I also liked the Outland feel with the countdown clock announcing the arrival of the rescue team.

I haven't heard anything new about the sequel.

However, I do agree. An actor is only as good as his/her director. Just because an actor is good, doesnt mean he could just act on command. Someone needs to tell him what to do, and how to do it. Otherwise....well....you get Bale in Salvation. :lol

There are movies I love where I don't have to think about what's going on very hard. Lots actually, including Die Hard, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Halloween, most westerns in existence, and recently Thor (well, I didn't love Thor, but I liked it a lot). Sometimes a movie succeeds on a visceral level without requiring lots of mental effort by the person watching it. But if a movie sucks it sucks, and I am the kind of person who tries to figure out why. Then, some level of thinking is involved I guess. Same if a movie is awesome. After it is over (and sometimes when it is on), I'll spend some time trying to figure out why a movie is so awesome.

If a movie is insanely stupid, and has no redeeming value to it (such as the Bay-Former or Wayans Bros. films, for example), then I think I recognize this as I'm watching it somewhere in my sub-conscious, and don't enjoy the film as I'm watching it because of that. I can't turn my abhorrence for suck off, sadly. Life seems too short sometimes. That's time I could spend bantering with strangers on an internet message forum dedicated to over-priced hunks of plastic.

I can understand it. I feel that you are mistaken to assume that a person thinks they have to become stupid to enjoy a "stupid" movie. I think these are figures of speech. It seems to me that in truth, it takes a stronger intellect to enjoy a wider range of movies.

I don't have it. But it seems to me that the majority of the people who have the ability to enjoy a super deep movie on one night, and then are able to take something away from "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" the next night tend to be from the group that handles themselves with a little more confidence in the intellectual arena.
