RED: 9/10 Awesome, over-the-top fun and action! Out of the films this year, in this same kind of genre; like The A-Team and The Expendables, I think RED is definitely the best! I loved the action, humor and the characters were great. Especially John Malkovich's character!!

I got the impression from the preview

that they greatly expand on the revenge ending by the pool.

Is that right?

I'm assuming you mean in comparison to the original film's ending, not the book (either way it's been a long time since I've read the book). I don't think Let Me In greatly expands the ending, but it's certainly executed differently. It's more violent, it's a whole heck of a lot harder to see anything because of how dark the setting is. One aspect I did like about Let Me In's pool scene versus the one in LTROI is that you really can tell how scared Oscar is of his bullies. He tries to escape. In the first film the actor is rather passive.

There's really only one aspect of the film's ending that bothered me, and it's regarding a photograph. Anyone who's seen both film's and/or read the book will know what I mean.

But I don't follow. What "pain" of Red's do you feel? In the end he and Andy found each other. It's the best buddy movie of all time IMO and it has a happy ending. :dunno

Oh yeah that was well shot. In the newer version, in that scene most of it you see from Oscar's perspective.

I'm hearing that this film is being pulled out of lots of theaters rather quickly since it's hardly making any money. Makes me kinda sad.

Superman II Donner Cut -- 10/10.

So much better than the original. The plot was cleaner. Several wierd plot-holes were removed. The mother talk was replaced with Jor-El. The transformation back into Superman made sense. The goofy "tripped-over-a-pink-bear" Superman reveal was replaced by a much better "Lois shoots Clark" reveal. Got rid of the unnecessary stuff -- pink honeymoon suite, Eiffel Tower scene, stupid plastic cellophane "S" throw, disappearing/reappearing Superman in the Fortress, etc. Fantastic.

A couple of things I didn't like ... Clark beating up the guy in the diner still remained (Superman wouldn't go out of his way to whip some nobody's ass), Superman spun the world back around (which seemed unnecessary since he had already defeated Zod, and which made the diner scene all the more nonsensical [the guy wouldn't have even recognized him]), removed the "replacing the flag on the White House" scene.

Ocean's Eleven ('01) - 6/10 Entertaining to say the least.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - 8/10 Had no interest in theis franchise when they started rolling out but no I can't get enough of them. Great imagination and they only get better with each year, with the exception of 5 but Goblet was a tough act to follow.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ('90) - 8/10 Theres a lot of nostalgia going into that but objectivity be damned, I love this movie. It's definitely not as campy as the two that followed it and I definitely appreciate how closely it sticks to the source material.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) - 9/10 based off the time frame of when it came out. This was a monumental picture in the '20s, and to think less than ten years later they had sound and color. Nowadays people go ape____ over this 3d gag craze.

What's similar about this movies than their exact high scores? The fact I didn't care for either film. I score based on technical value be it the writing, directing, casting, the score, and/or the acting. In this case, both films scored well in all the aforementioned factors... across the board. Except for two important factors. I wasn't a fan of the stories or the pay offs in the end. I guess not everything is supposed to have a positive outcome or ending, but the stories just didn't intrigue or grab at me.

Kubrick's Shining will always be unmatched.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - 7/10 Damn near an 8 just cause I liked the cinematography so much although there multiple occassions where the lighting was just ____. I'm all for the moodiness but if you can't see anything then who cares. Story was decent though but they spent a little too much time getting to the point.

Batman Begins - 6/10 Never really thought it was as great as others did. Great cast but poor use of a fantastic villain (Ra's Al Ghul). Also thought the whole evaporate the water bs was pretty weak. It does get the essence of the character down more than any (non-animated) incarnation prior though.

The Dark Knight - 8/10 For me this is one of those rare situations where a sequel improves upon the original. Nice to see the Scarecrow again, if even for a sec, and Bats isn't in a new suit just to sell toys. I love how it steadily turns into a suspensful game of cat and mouse with the whole city caught in the middle.

Well I just watched Predators for the 2nd time...guess what? I liked it less!

6/10....think my previous was 8/10.

I realized this 2nd time around that the Predators, the stars of the film for me, have less screen time than I would like. Now I'm not saying they need to make these films from the viewpoint of the Predators or anything like that....I get that you have to have the human aspect.

However, that human aspect is Adrian Brody in a role I :dunno when I first heard about it and then told myself it worked the first time I saw it. It gets more and more irritating the more you see it...it did for me anyways. It's poorly acted (not looking for Shakespeare) and overall I wish there was more Pred stuff happening.

The other thing that drove me nuts was all the shots of their expressions when they saw something new. It's like 10 minutes of the film...just them staring in awe......:horror

SPOILER BELOW FOR ANYONE THAT HASN'T SEEN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually wish that buff Ross,...sorry Royce, would have just left the other 2 behind. That's his character throughout the whole film and then he abandons it at the last second. I'm even fine with him being blown to smithereens when the Beserker blows up the ship...then the Beserker could kill the other 2 and the movie would end. To me, that would be unexpected and leave the audience completely surprised. As it ends now...it's par for the course really.

Think I just saved myself some money by not really wanting figures from this film. Yay for me! :clap

I think it would have made the film a little edgy and more enjoyable overall.

Let buff Ross kill a few Pred's and then get off'd by the Beserker or something....but don't turn him into a guy that is a mercenary for god knows how long and then decides he wants to risk it all for the last chick on the Predator planet....:slap.

*sarcasm acknowledged*

I liked when Berserker blew up the ship because I thought they were taking it in a direction where Isabelle would turn out to be the hero. It felt unexpected and I liked it. Then Royce showed up and i sorta thought "eh...dangit".

However once the whole thing went down i was fine with it. He had to redeem himself from being a jerk almost the entire movie and I understand that, It's called character development..it happens:lol or at least it's supposed too.

CelticPredator

It's a character Arc. It's a good thing to have. Royce is a tragic hero. He's not entirely unlikable, even when he leaves them, you can see he doesnt want to leave Izzy alone. He DOES want to help her....but he doesnt because he has supressed his human emotions. Izzy hasnt. She is human. Royce isnt. He does finally realize if he goes back to earth...he'll be alone. No one will be there for him.

So he goes back. I dunno...it's not deep, but it's a good arc. Pretty basic, but I like what they did with it.

Walking Dead episode 1 10/10

OH MY GOD. Just watched it last night with my 2 Walking Dead buddies. It's all that you would expect from Frank Darabont adapting the Walking Dead. It has moments of sheer tension, heart, and GREAT ZOMBIES!!!!!!!!!! He really fleshed out how hard it would be for a normal person coming to grips with actually having to shoot someone who you once knew was a person. Or someone you loved, this is what I was expecting from someone as talented as Darabont doing a zombie story. It's amazing and now I cant wait to see the higher quality version of it.

This is going to be IMO the best zombie story ever told in live action. Thank you Frank Darabont for putting so much effort forth in adapting this great take on the zombie apocolypse. If this show isn't a hit, I will have lost all hope in humanity

SPOILERS for anyone who hasn't seen PREDATORS!!!!

**sarcasm missed btw :lol**

And you missed the point where I said the "film", not the character :lecture. My point was the main star of the show, in 99% of the films I've seen, will do the expected and he did just that. He turned around and went back and I knew da** well when the ship blew he wasn't on it.

IMO, it would have made the film more edgy to have him take off in the ship, get blown up, and then have Isabelle finish the movie. I personally don't need a bunch of character development in this type of film for me to walk away and give it a high rating.

Great, inventive death scenes, something unexpected like the main actor douche'ing out and getting blown up, and more Pred screen time would have gone pretty far in my book to make this a better film.

Respect your opinion though Celtic...still :lol that I missed the sarcasm. That's what happens I guess when I can't sleep and post late at night.

Have to agree. Stories fit into certain patterns and have since people developed language. The unlikely hero on a journey to become a true hero is one of the oldest, and still one of the most satisfying to an audience.

You can go with "let's make the hero a complete loser and let everyone down" or "the heck with it, let's just let the monsters slaughter everyone" in order to be "edgy", but in the end, you're going against the entire tradition of human myth doing that, and it's REALLY difficult to pull that off without the audience feeling disappointed and/or cheated.

Well I guess I'm on the other side of the fence and it would have been more satisfying for me to see it the other way. Obviously people like yourselves enjoyed it and that's great.

The only other thing I will say is Celtic is when you said "What fun is it when you turn your main character into a horrible horrible person?"...he was that character from the very beginning and stayed that way throughout the film. I disagree with the "stayed that way throughout the film" theory

For instance:
When they were dying of smoke inhalation, he not only came up with an (admittedly desperate) method to get everyone out, he was the first one willing to stick his head into the opening left by the Berserker who still could have been standing right there. Later on, the look exchanged with Hanzo when that character decides to stand and fight to delay the preds showed real regret as well.

The sticking the head out the hole, well maybe...very slim maybe IMO, but I could kind of see that.

I mean the movie really isnt this complicated. Royce DID use them in a trap. But right after that he was more then willing to team up with them and beat the monsters. Yes, he wanted to save his ass...but you can tell, so very easily that he wanted to save Isebelle. Royce was right. Edwin WAS dead weight. Now...a normal human would for sure do what Izzy did. But Royce is a very disturbed person. His perception on the world is a very skewed one.

He almost pleaded with Izzy to come with him. But she refused. The look on his face was not that of someone who didnt give a ____. He regreted doing it. For the first time in his life.

When he came back, he even said "You spend so much time looking out for others, you forgot about yourself". He appeciated what she did.

By the end of the movie, his entire character did a 180. He stopped being a lone wolf, stopped being a cold selfish monster...he became human. He beat the Predators.

There IS a character arch. I dont see why it's so hard to see.

The Exorcist BD 9/10 Amazing movie and still one of the top 5 best ever made horror films.

The one thing that has always bugged me about the film is the authors (William Peter Blatty) and directors (William Friedkin) subliminal and intentional relation with Islam and Evil. It begins in the middle east with the Islamic call to prayer and ends with it. Direct and intentional indoctrination. Again great film, one that will stand the test of time as one of the scariest but the subliminal message is rubbish.

Does DC just assume that every person who watches these animated movies is familiar with all the characters? I had the feeling while watching this that, had I not already read the graphic novel from which this film is adapted, Id be fairly lost keeping track of the secondary characters.

And these animated features would benefit from a longer running time. S/B:S is an hour and fifteen minutes long. It felt rushed, almost truncated (though there are some scenes that aren't from the original story).

Edge of Darkness: 3/5

It was okay. A little slower than I was expecting. Mel was pretty good in it--he really became the character. Although I must confess I can't help but think of his wacky real self when I watch him now. I never thought I would be someone who would be affected by an actor's personal life, but he's just so out there now--way beyond Tom Cruise. It's too bad. He really is quite good.

Haven't seen this movie since I was a kid... and I think I only saw it in the theater. But got a wild hair and decided to put it on Netflix... overall a pretty cool Wizard of Oz movie. Darker than I remembered, and some really great costume and creature designs.

From Paris With Love - 3/10 Meh. If the titles a nod to the Bond film it certainly comes off as a knockoff. Paper thin plot, maybe one decent action beat, and a cliche carchase. Yay. Coulda told you ten minutes in that the girlfriend was a spy. Jonathan Rhyse Myers is aweful. Even Travolta isn't as good as people said he was, he feels exactly like his character from Broken Arrow or Face/Off. I gotta quite doing this to myself.:slap

This movie and it's predecessor are much better than the reviews and popular opinion would have you believe . Honestly I don't know what to rate it. On the one hand, it was miserable to watch. Just such a bleak, dreary story. But on the other hand it was very well done and I was interested in the world and what would happen to the characters.

If it wasn't for the other family finding the kid at the end ...I would have rated it a zero.

Towards the end I was rooting for them to kill themselves to relieve their misery. And especially after the dad died I was yelling at the screen, "Jeez, just shoot yourself already, kid! This is a horrible horrible world!"

I absolutely loved the movie, and I loved the book. I found both to be just about the most emotionally compelling works I've experienced in a quite a while.
I will agree that they are harrowing, but thats the message. Life isn't meant to be easy, but for these characters it is exceptionally hard. It says as much about our feudal past as our dystopian future. I'd say 9/10 for me.

That's how I was thinking about it too, wookster--like our feudal past. But even in the past, I think communities and tribes were built and established more quickly than in the movie. I think that's what hit me worst about the scenario--that they were utterly alone and it was truly every man for himself.

...whether that was true or if it was the dad's refusal to trust anyone else

That made their future seem the most bleak and hopeless.

But yes, I definitely appreciated it as a complex, thought provoking piece of cinema (and literature).

You've got a point there, but the difference is that in the world of The Road, there were no more resources for community's to draw from.

The movie never came out and said how all this happened, but the book intimated that it was nuclear in nature. The resulting nuclear winter killed all edible vegatation as well as animals, thus turning some to cannibalism.

:exactly: It wasn't a total train wreck, but more like a fender bender. I remember keeping up with the production on Superhero hype, and I actually think Raimi did alright with what Sony kept doing to him. 2 is one of my favorite Superhero movies. Just classic and has an awesome villain in it.
