I was talking about the Carpenter version (not a remake - both films are based off a novella, two different takes on original story). The original was over 50 years ago, not 25!

The original is an crappy flick, even compared to other B movies of the era. But Carpenter created a masterpiece by remaining a bit truer to the original story.

Ah, didn't see the last bit of your post. Oh well, I love both films.

Michael Crawford

My favorite part of the 50's version is that James Arness is a giant carrot.

As to running zombies - yea, I hated that. The people in 28 Days aren't zombies, so their mobility isn't an issue. But what was even worse with Dawn zombies is that they got FASTER after they were dead! Maybe I'm crazy, but it doesn't seem likely that death would improve your motor skills.

Having running zombies turns the film into a run of the mill monster/horror movie.

What makes Romero's zombie movies so great is that often the real monsters are the living. They should be able to succeed against the shambling zombies but their stupidity or selfishness is often their undoing.

Plus a hoard of shambling zombies just has a different feel on camera than just another scene where the character is being chased by a running zombie. You might as well exchange the zombie for any other monster.

Regarding the Dawn of the Dead remake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_of_the_Dead_%282004_film%29):

Many admirers of the original, as well as Romero himself, protested this change, feeling that it limited the impact of the undead. This is somewhat borne out by the fact that the remake has almost no close up shots of zombies that last more than a second or two. Snyder [Director] mentions this in the commentary track of the remake's DVD, pointing out that they seem too human when the camera lingers upon them for longer.

Let's see.....

This Is It
8/10 only because I was hoping for a little bit more of a "what happened" at the end of his life and the movie just kind of ends. Not that the movie was advertised that way mind you.

I will say this, I'm not a MJ fan, like some of his stuff, but man that guy could dance (duh) and I would have gone to see that show after watching this movie. Now, would I have been able to afford it or would I have paid the prices they were probably asking for tickets....um no. However, if someone would have said they had a free ticket I would have totally gone. Looks like they were really going to do it up and what that guy was doing during rehearsals at age 50....would have been quite the sight.

The Spirit
Haha, I don't even know what the he** to rate this. I was expecting this horribly bad film and it turned out okay. I can't say I loved it, can't say I'd ever watch it again, but I CAN say I actually kind of enjoyed parts of it.
Samuel Jackson was pretty good in it and of course the ladies were nice to look at in it as well (mmm Scarlett). I think my favorite part were the idiot clones. They were pretty damn entertaining,...all except the stupid foot part.

Here goes, 6/10....that's probably about right.

Original or remake? I've only seen the 2002 remake with Jesus (Jim Cavizel) which is a decent movie but overacted in some parts.

Death at a Funeral (2007) 9/10

I had intended to see the recently released version until I found it was a remake and went searching for the original. For those who don't know, the new one is based on a British comedy of the same name.

Having just finished the movie, I can honestly say I'm still laughing. It's one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while and the best part is that it manages to have many characters who all see fleshed out enough to make you laugh. The acting is great, the story is funny as hell and the whole movie is totally worth a watch.

Stripes -Ectended Cut. This is one of those rare occasions where 'Director's cut' can be properly applied as a correct term. In the original, some of the character motivations seemed to have holes. The extended edition fills the gaps integrating the lost scenes with the story to explain why the main characters acted in the manner they did.

The original would get a 16mm, but the Extended Cut gets a 35mm!

BTW the DVD also comes with a paper model of the EM-50!

What the ____ does Gran Torino have in common with Karate Kid?

You are kidding right?

A young kid in bullied by a gang of punks stumbles on an old war veteran who grudgingly takes him under his wing working him hard to teach him a higher purpose and and the true art of war...and oh yes gives him a pristine old car.

Alternate connection is that Eastwood teaches Hillary Swank (the Next Karate kid) to fight in Million Dollar Baby.

Other films that are closely similar (or identical) in storyline:

Dune-SW ep 4 A New Hope

Three Amigos-Galaxy Quest-Tropic Thunder.

Yojimbo-A-Fist Full of Dollars-Last Man Standing.

Logan's Run-THX1138-The Island

High Noon-Outland-Copland

Reaching a bit for surface level similarities. The film is about Eastwood's character metamorphosis.

LOL OK whatever.

The fact remains that these are easily recognizable plot points (yes multiple) which help define the film. The whole Asian/Caucasian dynamic isn't lost either.

For those who are into foreign weird and 60's retro and art-films and bad sci fi...I recommend CQ.

This is one of the overlooked films of the 'new Millennium'. It features Billy Zane, John Phillip Law, Dean Stockwell, and Gerard Deparieu in a film within a film about a young director's (Jeremy Davies) big break.

To succeed though, he has to keep his sanity while pleasing his girlfriend who wants him to grow up while editing a film that has yet to have an ending! All this while battling the damage caused phantom saboteur of the film he is editing.

Starring Jeremy Davies and Angela Lindvall.

On a surface level maybe. It's too easy to dismiss as shocking though. It's perhaps the purest form of art I've seen in years. Something that inspires the deepest fissures of your mind. Watched Avatar tonight. On a visual and aural level, 10/10. Great looking movie, great sound, excellent blu-ray. On a cinematic level, maybe 7/10. The movie was at least 30 minutes too long - that first 80 minutes is long and drawn out beyond belief. Yes, it looks great - but it's just one long scene to show off the special effects. No plot, no character development, but it's saved in the last 60 minutes by the action.

Sorry not looking for an arguement but I still don't get the hype. To me the CGI alone does not impress, I play video games with maxed out video settings that immerse me far more into the created universe. Like Mike said a page back the movie is slow as well. It just didn't feel any differant then a typical Disney animated feature to me, like a Toy Story or Jumanji. I did give it an extra point vs. my experiance seeing it in the theatre where i gave it a 5/10. The differance being in my home, I think I had more to do to break up the monotony. It was the knowing at any moment I could at least fast forward to the end action unlike in the theatre..

10/10

It's definitely my favorite of the modern westerns. And if I were to make a movie, Ray Winston would be in it. He's great in everything he does. John Hurt is also incredible in this.

Yeah he was also brilliant. The whole cast was but for me, Danny Huston and Ray Winstone stood out because I wasnt expecting them to be so good. My first exposures to both were Wolverine and Crystal Skull respectively and thought nothing of them in both. In The Proposition they totally took me by surprise

Gross Point Blank 9/10
One of my all time favorite films! Would love a Blu of this with anamorphic widescreen instead of the ____ty letterbox of the DVD. Oh well at least the sound is decent which means a lot given the soundtrack is fantastic! IMO John Cusacks perfect role!

Really odd and pretty funny movie. Matt Damon's performance is really good and interesting in this one. I would say its a bit on the long side and not one I'd want to watch again, but still enjoyable.

Agreed. Matt Damon owned that role imo, very funny. Still not something i'd need to see again.

Oh man, that's a real shame... The movie is only similar to the book in overall plot, otherwise everything that's wonderful about the book is lost on the film. If it wasn't for some very cool visuals I would give the film a 2/10... Honestly though, don't be afraid to give the book a try. It's VERY good.
