Stupid , seemed to me like it was making out as if violence was something great too. Should of realised that by the name I suppose. I went to see this at 12:00 am last night in the middle of town and when me and my mate were paying to get in the woman told us it was full of nutters. When we went in there was nobody in there. :rotfl

One thing did make me laugh in the movie , basically the whole of London is starving.

so in order to feed people a guy opens a fast food joint , kentucky fried pigeon. KFP :lol

Wolverine - 3/10

Was a 7/10 right up until Three Mile Island and the last half hour. Then it just degenerated into garbage further and further and kept dragging on and on. Lost a point for the bastardization of Deadpool, a point for the wife reveal, a point for the way the Victor/Logan relationship was left, and a point for The overall poor writing of how it all came togeather to Logan losing his memory. Total rubbish.

Wolverine gets screwed more then Indy, made me think of Ray Winstone in Crystal Skull and the triple agent line, so retarded.

How to train your Dragon. Wow this movie really was as good as people are saying. The animation was stunning and every bit as good as PIXAR. Maybe even better. It had a touching story, the 3D was superb and the action scenes were amazing. This has to get best Animated movie at the oscars next year. I can't see Toy Story 3 beating this. There was a 3D trailer for Toy Story 3 and it looked weak in comparison. I urge everyone to see this. 9.5/10

Clash of the Titans 5/10 Disappointing and a missed opportunity. Failed to capture any of the spirit or charm of the original. Sam Worthington was totally miscast, his look and sound were totally wrong, every time he spoke his Australian accent jarred me out of the film. The short hair didn't work and the changes to the original story added nothing, they seemed like change for changes sake, the only improvement was that Pegasus was more realistic.

Fantastic Mr. Fox 8/10. Wasn't really keen on seeing this, as I'm not a huge Wes Anderson fan. But it's a great Roald Dahl story, and the voice talent was obviously there...and it was much better than I had expected. The quirky animation, which looks simply goofy in the trailers, worked great for the overall feature. Well deserving of the kudos last year.

Clash of the Titans (2010) in Real 3D - 6.5/10 - Thought it was a good kick off to the summer movies. Decent acting, good fx and meh 3D. I like the original better, but not by a whole lot. The original Medusa is untouchable.

Clash of the Titans 3D: 5/10
As others have said this movie really misses the mark. Its not awful, or unwatchable. But it did seem really slow and it got annoying when everyone talked in a throaty Batman Begins voice :lol

Some parts were pretty cool looking like the final battle with the Kraken, but others just weren't very engrossing. Probably the biggest issue I had is that things came too easy in the film... unlike the original where it seemed like Perseus had to fight for every victory. The 3D is completely pointless (especially as most of the film you can watch without the glasses and it looks about the same) and if you can see it in 2D I think it would be better... at least save you a few bucks.

The original is still far superior for me; just further reinforces the notion that not everything needs a remake.

"Brothers" with Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhal (sp?) and Natalie Portman. Oh yeah, and that guy that was Earl's big dumb brother, he's in it as well. :)

Overall I was REALLY surprised by this film. I really enjoyed it and it might have been that I wasn't expecting much.

Story is good, the acting is good, the ending is good. All around a surprise and one that I would recommend.

The only thing I didn't completely care for was Tobey Maguire as a soldier in charge of men in the military. He looks just a little scrawny and too young or inexperienced IMO for the part. I kind of thought at the beginning that they should have cast Gyllenhal for that role and Maguire as the brother.

By the end of the film though and the change the character goes through he fits the part better and is more believable.

Also started "The Informant" and fell asleep about 1/2 way through it. Just wasn't really in the mood so I can't say the film is bad, just need to start where I left off and give it another shot. Was a busy weekend with Easter and everything so I was pretty tired.

Yojimbo - 10/10

I realize I rate a ton of movies 10/10, but it's mostly because I've been catching up on fantastic classic movies. This one is no different.

By far this is Mifune's most badass role that I've seen. He plays the lone gunslinger of the samurai world, not just with stoic bravery and skill but cunning. I loved this movie, it along with Seven Samurai are amazing feats of classic action film making.

I've started watching Sanjuro so I'll probably be reviewing that soon too.

Was going to pick this up the other day, but when some others on here mentioned centurion blu ray etc and looked at the difference in quality of still taken from the blu ray. Decided I will wait to watch it once get a region free blu ray player or one that will play that blu ray plus Sanjuro and Seven Samurai when they release it. A bunch of Akira Kurosowa films I've been meaning to watch for *YEARS* but just havent gotten round to it. Now I'm going to put it off even longer untill I can watch the films in that quality and so on.

Besides, when I picked up a couple of other DVDs the other day they didnt even bloody have them, typical :lol

Picked up Lost Season 4 and Shogun miniseries based on the James Clavell novel. Read the novel a couple of years ago and I'm interested to see how it translates from book to film.

Any way I'll shut up now

I don't typically listen to the dubbed track but for whatever reason I did here....ugh.

I had no idea they were doing an American version?!?! That could be pretty cool but I think overall what makes this film creepier than normal is that it doesn't seem over produced and with a bunch of effects. I hope they don't over do it for the American version because I think that would kill it for me.

American versions of horror films are usually fails... this will likely be no different.

And I agree with you Chigger, part of what makes the movie special is that it has a different sensibility to it that will likely be lost in a US remake.

Michael Crawford
04-08-2010, 11:30 AM
First, it's not a remake. Film's that are adaptations of books aren't remakes of one another - they're new adaptations of the books.

And while I enjoyed the movie, having read the book it was a bit of a disappontment. I watched it a second time, and felt it dragged too much, cutting out a lot of the action in the book and leaving in scenes that did nothing for the plot (like the scenes involving the dad). While these parts worked well in the novel, it was because they were fleshed out - in the film, they went no where. I also wasn't super impressed with their handling of the bulllies - the boy's loneliness and isolation didn't translate well for me.

galactiboy
04-08-2010, 11:51 AM
So is the reason the movie being made because of the popularity of the film, or the book? I'd guess the film... so I'd call it a remake; especially given its so quickly on the heels of the first film. Although I do see your point about "adaptations".

And film companies seem to like the idea of creating western versions of popular films hoping they'll be more palatable and profitable. This seems like what happened with films like The Grudge and The Eye.

Michael Crawford

No, the book. The deal for the American film was inked while the film was still being made. The book was EXTREMELY popular outside of the US, and was optioned pretty early.

Whether or not it's an adaptation isn't important because of the popularity of the film vs the book - it's important because the original book has far more material to work with. You can make two (or three or four) very different movies based on the same book, and they can seem like entirely different stories. My favorite example is the Thing, but there's lots and lots of examples of course. But trying to make another movie when there was only a movie to start with (like with the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street) means you'll either just re-hash what we already saw, or you'll have to make up new stuff. And making up new stuff rarely seems to go well.

And I wouldn't use either of those movies as examples - Ju-on is only a mediocre movie, and I actually liked the Grudge better (at least it didn't totally destroy the timeline it was trying to create) overall. Ju-on has some very, very effective scenes, but it's like they forgot they were actually supposed to tie together in some form of a plot or story. I will gladly admit that the original version of The Eye (jin gwai) is superior, and a pretty good movie, but still, nothing earth shattering.

I can definitely recommend them! I wasn't planning on buying them, but there was this "2 for the price of 1" thing at the store, so it was a very good deal :) :rock :rock

Great movies. I also recently bought them. I own all of the available Pixar movies on Blu Ray, with the exception of cars. Its amazing how far they have come since Toy Story 1. The amazing picture quality shows off the simple textures used in the movie but they had to start somewhere right. Monsters inc also looks slightly dated with the exception of Sullys Fur. However they all look spectacular on BR.

Yes, they look good - but I was surprised that Monsters inc. and TS 1 did look dated in blu. I can't wait to see Nemo though!

I agree! While the picture quality was absolutely amazing and a joy to watch, I did notice that some bits in Toy Story 1 looked a bit dated. Especially the dog from the evil kid next door.

But these are just very minor nitpicks, and they didn't ruin the viewing experience at all IMO.
I had an awesome afternoon watching these two classics!!!! :rock :rock :rock :rock

I was browsing Target today, and saw a couple of movies I'm considering giving a shot, and wanted to see if anyone can give a thumbs up or down ...

-- The Kingdom w/ Jamie Foxx .... FBI Agent on a counterterrorist operation in Saudi Arabia, best I can tell.

-- The International w/ Clive Owen ... something about arms dealers and and an InterPol agent ... and a girl.

The Kingdom looks pretty well rated on Amazon ... The International, not so much. Also ... did anyone here see any of the Showtime series "Sleeper Cell"? Is it worthwhile? What about USA's "Burn Notice"?

Where the Wild Things Are

5/10

I enjoyed the effects a lot because I love broad daylight shots with the characters in them and this movie is chock full of them. The creatures were extremely well done and I really like the voice casting of Gandolfini as Carroll.

From what I was told, the kid that played Max, this was his first time acting in a major film and he was very good.

Overall I just didn't care for the film. Had some good parts but there was just something wrong with it IMO but I'm still kind of trying to put my finger on what it was.

Clash of the Titans: 2/10...
this movie was an utter abomination to the original one. Granted the original one wasn't that good in the first place, IMO...but I still think it's one of movies that changed cinema forever for it's innovation. But this one was boring as hell and didn't bring anything that I hadn't seen before.
My review has spoilers:

-The story lacked in substance and everything seems rushed.

-The effects where bland and not polished enough.

-The kracken got crackelaken in a matter of minutes....meaning, it basically didn't do anything, just rise from the water very...very...very slowy and then after it's fully out of water, Perseus comes and "saves the day".

-Medusa was forgettable, not like the Medusa from the original version which scared me for weeks when I first saw the movie as a child, and her CG was too toony for my taste.

-There wasn't any outstanding action sequences.

-And WTF with the wood people?? Why where they there, seriously? I guess, there only function was to tame the scorpions and heal Perseus' arm, but those where happenings that could have been easily removed from the plot, and substituted by something more substantial.

- The two hunters that volunteered to fight with them, where supposed to be comic relief, but they weren't funny at all.

-I felt that Liam Neeson tended to over act sometimes.

-Calibos maid no sense and was just a filler IMO.

-Andromeda was useless, and I didn't understand why people didn't just bum rush her when Hades said that she needed to be sacrificed. I would've killed her on the spot.

-Perseus had no charisma what so ever. I could have cared less that his whole family was killed. I dunno....I didn't think that Sam Worthington did a good job in this movie, he was just so boring.

-I'm not gonna even bring up what they did to Bubo, cuz that was just messed up.

All in all....i feel that if it wasn't for the Hades character, the film would have been beyond unwatchable. Hades was awesome, his smokey effects where awesome, the way his minions bursted out of his wings was awesome, his cruelty was awesome, Ralph Fiennes is awesome....everything about Hades was completely awesome. To bad he was in such a crappy movie.

Oh another thing I liked about that movie was that crazy crack head that formed a cult against Andromeda, he was the only one in the movie that was thinking straight.
Also, Pegasus' wings looked believable and the map of the world was pretty cool.

So in conclusion, up to now, this movie is the worst movie of the year and I'm pissed off that I wasted my money on this piece of ____....i should have seen How to Train a Dragon instead.:banghead

Yeah.... i was kinda bothered about that too...but didn't wanna seem racist. :monkey5

But, seriously, I think they where trying to symbolize that this Perseus is much darker than the original one, so a white Pegasus wouldn't suit him...at least thats the vibe I got.

Clash of the Titans- 7/10

Better than average, but there were flaws, and I didn't come out like "wow that was a great movie"!

Sam Worthington was much better in Terminator Salvation and definitely in Avatar. His performance in this movie was kinda boring.

The effects were very good however, and that is why it gets 7/10.

This may just be my religion, but the way they portrayed the gods was pretty ridiculous, and honestly I was expecting a better story and more action.

The Kraken was kinda lame since he died by looking at the head of medusa, and didn't even really attack, not to mention that the name of the creature shouldn't have even been kracken, since the kraken is a giant octopus-like thing.

Overall a live action Hercules movie would have been cooler in my opinion, and I feel Sam Worthington was somewhat miscast.

Drag Me To Hell - Pathetic. I don't seem to recall anyone mentioning that this movie was actually supposed to be a comedy. I suffered through three great belly laighs during this movie. I say suffered because as near as I can tell...I wasn't supposed to be laughing, but the stupidity of the parts that I laughed at demanded SOME reaction and that was the kindest reaction that I could offer....1/10.

The Timetraveler's Wife - Surprisingly, I found a lot to like in this movie considering that it is a chick flick. There was a great deal of originality to the story line and some pretty good imagination as well. The very plot lended itself to a myriad of twists that really make it hard to guess what is about to happen. And the possibilities that were not touched on could have kept this movie going and interesting for days without stopping...7/10.

Clash of The Titans (2010) - Very good film. Fixed a lot of what was wrong with the original. It was far from perfect, but it kept me interested and entertained throughout the movie.

The cameo with the mechanical owl was weak.

Edit - Oops...forgot the score for Clash of the Titans...7/10

Clash of the Titans (2010) 6/10.

Didn't hate it, didn't love it. It was pretty entertaining overall and I thought the effects (saw it in 2D btw) were really good. There are just so many things in this movie that kind of make you scratch your head.

Two things overall come to mind that annoyed me (but there were more, haha). One was the shimmery Gods...reminded me of something out of an 80's TV show.

That and Ralph Fiennes. I thought he overacted the part of Hades. All the high brow looks he gave the camera reminded me of Dr. Evil and I thought his performance felt very Broadway.

I keep waiting/rooting for Sam Worthington to bust out with a great film but again....this film just kind of fizzles out.

The Wire, The Complete Series.

Without a doubt, 10/10. It deserves more. This is, by far, the most intricate, detailed, developed and touching television series ever produced.

I don't know where to begin reviewing The Wire, in fact I'd say I don't have the skills necessary to describe how important and substantial this series is, not just to television but to people. Actually, I'd say all I want anyone to take from this review is that they need, NEED, to watch this show.

It's been off the air for a few years now, but this series will not be forgotten. For those who don't know The Wire follows the lives of police officers, gangsters, drug addicts, school children, politicians, dock workers, newspaper writers and everyday people through the city of Baltimore.

I live 20 minutes outside of the city but this series made me realize how little I know about its people. My personal favorite seasons are Season 1 and 4, and by god, Omar is the coolest, baddest man to ever walk the streets. Come at the king, you best not miss.

Man....i've been dieing to see this show! :drool

Arrested Development S.3 - 10/10

Oh man, how bitter sweet, nice to have finally watched the entire series in order, but damn, the fact this show got canceled makes me abosultely sick. How in the hell half the grabage on TV keeps getting picked up and no one watched this I will never, ever, ever understand. The laughs just don't stop and its incredibly rewarding to rewatch seasons since their are usually referances that bring the jokes full circle. Ron Howard's narration tie all the characters togeather, everyone is cast perfectly and the writing is nothing short of genius. I just can't reccomend this show enough.

I did see it in 3D. I was disappointed when my wife told me that she bought the 3D tickets. But while watching it, I thought the 3D was the thing about the movie that was done the best. Nice depth without all of the jumping-off-the-screen-and-in-to-your-lap crap.

I've been wondering about The Wire. I'm a big 24 fan and am looking for a new (or old) show to get into after Jack retires in a few weeks.

I am just getting into Burn Notice, which I've been very impressed with so far. I need to watch the rest of Alias (which I left off after Ssn 3, I think). The Shield is a possibility. Chuck, The Wire or Sleeper Cell (old Showtime series) have also come up as possibilities.

Good, glad to hear it wasn't totally crappy like most have said. I guess it's ones own opinion but I wouldn't want to sit through a crappy 3D movie for an hour plus if it wasn't done well.

I'm not an expert though as I've only seen Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, and Toy Story 1 and 2 in 3D so far. Liked all of those well enough though...

Though I refuse to entertain the possibility that The Wire could be better than 24 ... I have heard people speak highly of it. I haven't heard very many people explain why they rate it so highly, though.

To be honest, I'm not even quite sure what The Wire is about or the nature of the series at all. Is it an action series? Character study? Cop drama? Are there any comparable shows that I might've seen?

What makes The Wire so good is that it the plot sounds just like a bunch of other shows that have been on TV, but it takes the story and characters places no other show has ever been. It is part character study, part expose, and totally the best drama series ever made.

As I said in the review, the series follows different facets and members of society - police officers, drug dealers, school kids, drug addicts, politicians - as they navigate and try to survive in Baltimore. It is NOT an action series, but it certainly has violent, incredibly intense moments, easily comparable to Saving Private Ryan or moments from The Departed.

I'd say watch those other shows first. After you watch The Wire, you'll find them far less entertaining.

Kinda cheesy and not very scary. I went into this with fairly high expectations since everyone I knew liked it so much. The sfx were nice though, except for a few instances in which it was obvious green screen and cgi were used to fill out the cave environment.

it entertained me. i was expecting the worst after all the reviews. so that (and not being a massive fan of the original) maybe made me enjoy it more. still think the dialogue was terrible in some places, could have been longer with more action/adventure, and that sam worthington doesn't have the charisma yet to carry a film on his own.

the most disappointing thing i guess was that Argos looked nothing like our local one. No stacks of catalogues, crap chav jewellery or mass of plebs. although the dirty skinny cockney guy on crystal meth spouting the end of the world was a pretty accurate touch. kudos to the researchers.

my mother said to me after seeing it herself, "the cracker was better than i expected". i really hope she didn't sit there for the majority of the film thinking the hell hades was going to unleash was a wife-beater wearing drunk redneck trying to run over the citizens of argos in his pickup truck.

That crap really pisses me off as well and is why I avoid cinemas on fridays, weekends and half terms etc. Also why I tend not to see horrors or comedies at cinema, because people laughing and screaming as well as all the crap you listed just ruins what ever atmosphere has been built. I also tend to go at times when dont think many people will be there. which I'm pretty good at :D Most of the time that I go the cinema is pretty empty so makes for a better experience. And I dont mean that I go at the dead hours in the morning or something.

But that amount of times I've wanted to smack people around the head because they cant leave their phone alone for a couple of hours. If theyre that bored in there then just GTFO

In the Line of Fire -- 9/10 -- the best Secret Service movie out there. Liked The Sentinel and Vantage Point ... but ITLOF was simply fantastic.

Lord of War -- 6/10 ... eh. It was OK. I'm not sure the filmmakers knew what there were going for here. It was a weird mix of a serious movie about arms trading, and a somewhat lighthearted "Burn Notice"-like narration by Nick Cage. If you're casting for a serious analysis of illegal arms trading ... why Nick Cage? If you're going for a lighthearted arms-trading movie ... why all the serious melodramatic stuff? Ended up with a cliche'd blaming of all the 3rd-world's problems on the West. But, there were some cool weapons in there.

I was talking about the Carpenter version (not a remake - both films are based off a novella, two different takes on original story). The original was over 50 years ago, not 25!

The original is an crappy flick, even compared to other B movies of the era. But Carpenter created a masterpiece by remaining a bit truer to the original story.

Dawn (2004) 6.5/10 On its own merits it is a watchable horror movie.

Dawn (1978) 9.5/10 Easily my favorite zombie movie. I have never cared about characters in a horror movie as much as I did in that film. Plus I like the effects better. Yes the blood was almost pink and the zombie makeup was basically just gray paint, but Romero wasn't afraid to let the camera linger on the most grizzly stuff. And all of Romero's gut ripping scenes blow the new zombie movies out of the water. Real pig intestines and plenty of time to look at 'em. Also the apartment basement scenes is one of the most disturbing moments in zombie history.

Also, Romero's Dawn is thick with social commentary, which I love.

Oh yeah, and I hate the CG baby in Dawn (2004).

And, running zombies just aren't the same. :( I love them in 28 days later, but the don't belong in anything connected to Romero's name imo.

I honestlty feel if they hadn't put the baby in Dawn, it would be a 8/10 for me, but with it, like a 6/10. Its just that retarded. Its the Indy hopping in a fridge moment, even in a zombie movie.

As it stands, I like Day way better then the original Dawn, could never really get that into Dawn or either version of Night. Though if I had to pick, I prefer Romero's Night.

Which "Day"?

Day of the Dead (1985) or Day of the Dead (2008)

Kick-Ass - 8/10 - A fun movie. Funny, violent and well cast. If anything watch it for Hit-Girl and Cage delivering his lines as Big Daddy.
