I thought it was a mess. Some hated it even more than me, but a few did like it.

I don't agree with CHUD's Devin Faraci often, but his review of the film is pretty much how I saw it as well (though he's a tad more harsh): http://chud.com/articles/articles/22779/1/REVIEW-ALICE-IN-WONDERLAND/Page1.html

This line is spot-____ing-on:

The ending of the movie plays like Tim Burton making peace with the fact that he's no longer an artist, he's now a content provider for Hot Topic.

was this the spin off from that channel 4 spoof chat show. ah, i forgot his name - played byt the IT crowd and mighty boosh guy. the guy in your avvie (where's that from by the way? - looks funny :lol)

EDIT - got it just as i posted - dean lerner!

Yeah, his name is Richard Ayoade and he plays Moss in The IT-Crowd. He plays the fictional producer/actor Dean Lerner in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace who played the character Thornton Reed in the Darkplace tv-show.
He did the show Man to Man with Dean Learner, which is probably the one you meant as the spin off spoof chat show. I never saw that.

The guy in my avatar is Matt Berry in his role of Todd Rivers/Lucien Sanchez in Darkplace.
He also plays in The IT Crowd and The Mighty Boosh :)

Baseball season is coming up ...

A League of Their Own -- 8/10 ... less chick flickish than you would expect. Tom Hanks is awesome.

61* -- 10/10 ... a perfect baseball movie. Great story about the race to break Babe Ruth's homerun record in 1961, and the pressures on Mantle and Maris during that season. Casting is great from top-to-bottom ... Mantle, Maris, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra.

Lucky Number Slevin ... 10/10. A truly awesome movie with a cool ending.

I'd rank the twist on par with "The Usual Suspects". Great twist ending. It goes from slick/ offbeat comedy to revenge movie quickly and cleanly.

Great cast (Hartnett, Willis Freeman, Kingsly, Liu, Tucci). Clever plot. Well-written script. Great movie from top-to-bottom. Highly recommended. One of the best never-mentioned, nobodys-ever-heard-of, movies out there.

I agree completely. It's terrible that it didn't do well when it was out because it really is a smart, taut, overall well done film.

The way the story bends and tricks the viewer is rare these days. The first time I saw it I was actually surprised how everything turned out. I highly recommend to anyone who wants a good thriller/action film.

9/10 for me, I'd say.

http://media.monstersandcritics.com/articles/1132690/article_images/avengerhulkcap.jpg

Green Lantern: First Flight was the best origin movie (so far) that DC Direct has produced - better than the Wonder Woman movie, in my opinion. This was a well-written script. :rock

Unfortunately, I am a bit disappointed with the Ultimate Avengers movie, as I had high expectations (choosing this as the last movie of the night for me to watch, over Green Lantern: First Flight). :dunno It had a very short running time (1:08) and overused The Hulk's incontrollability as a source of crisis for the movie. I also am not a fan of Nick Fury running S.H.I.E.L.D. a la Star Trek. At least Natasha Romanoff was there! :P

Only my opinions though.. Watch 'em (if you haven't yet) and you be the judge. :duff

2012 - 6/10

Some terrific special effects, and excellent sound mix. Yea, the plot was stupid in a few places, but not as many as I expected, largely because they abandoned talking about the causes and jumped into the disaster flick action right away.

If you like disaster flicks, it's definitely worth a watch. I did have one issue with the video though for anyone else that's seen the blu - when they are on the 'ark' and the water is rushing in, does anyone else think it looks like a bad made for tv movie? The rest of the effects were so well done that it really stood out to me...

Interestingly the only problem I had with the movie had to do with the quality of the visuals. Some off the CG didn't look right to me.

I liked the story. If you were going in expecting the intentional "nonsense" that Lewis Carol presented then the story would be disapointing.

The script Burton used was much more linear in nature. Also much larger in scale.

I loved that it was based around the poem Jabberwocky.

You two are very generous. The film lacked BAD in every single category. The story was extremely weak, predictable and cliched. The director/writer couldn't decide if the film was to be sad, corny or humurous. The supporting acting was horrendous.

2012 Hands down one of the most God awful movies my eyes have ever had the displeasure of watching.

2/10 I wanna punch Roland Emerich right in the mouth.

We have such similar tastes, although I would give 2012 1/10!

2012 is the epitome of a horrible movie. Roland Emerich is beyond awful. My friend had to pay me to see this. Luckily for me, I saved money, but I lost 2 hours of my life. He was so certain it would be well worth the money, and I said it's Emerich. After seeing ID4 and the Day After Tomorrow. I said never again! I didn't even see 10,000 BC. Unfortunately I did see 2012. What a joke of a movie.

Now I like Michael Crawford's website and his toy reviews are some of the best out there, but he should stick to toy reviews if he actually thinks that 2012 is an above average flick.

All I remember was 2-plus hours of Dukes the Hazard meets the Day After Tomorrow. How many exaggerated car jumps must there be in a film? How is it that John Cusack's character can outrun a crumbling environment behind him, yet a car or jet can barely make it? I have no idea how Emerich makes movies... oh right! People are fooled into his pretty special effects juggernauts not caring about the fact that a story is what makes a movie. Argh! STOP GOING TO SEE HIS MOVIES!!! :banghead

_____ rant over! MWC, sorry, I just don't like that movie... Having said that, can you reconsider your opinion of the film? lol

Outlander 3/10 Just a big cliched waste of talent and opportunity!

Saw The Wolfman Remake today

I'd give it a 6/10

Was sort of interesting at the start, but then it just got quite bad, and in the end didn't really end up being much, as the Cycle (which was plain to see) was bound to continue.
Though it did have some decent 'frights'/'quick-shock' moments, and it was quite gory. One of those movies you watch once, then forget about. But thats about it really.

Definite 2/10
Thought I'd like it because of the Greek Mythology side, but Greek Mythology in America, what was the guy who wrote the story smoking at the time?, and Mount Olympus is now The Empire State Building, wtf.
Some of the CG was alright, mediocre at best.
And theres something about Logan Lerman is just grrrrr. :monkey4
Best Part for me was seeing Rosario Dawson as Persephone, she sexy in the movie.
But thats it about, 2 hours of my life I won't get back.

Mreh, God of War 3 should erase that painful memory

Michael Crawford
03-09-2010, 09:19 AM
When you over do your attitude toward a movie like 2012, calling it the worst thing you've ever seen, then you come across as not seeing a whole lot. Disaster movies are never going to rank high, but as they go, this one isn't that bad. Even the recent Knowing was ten times worse than 2012 and far, far, FAR more pretentious. Outside the genre, Couple's Retreat was much worse all the way around. If yoiu give a mediocre movie like 2012 a 1 or 2, you'll have to give those flicks negative scores.

And someone like Emmerich knows his limits, unlike directors like Shymalan who still think they are creating the greatest works of screen art in the history of man. He makes movies with big explosions and huge disasters - it's his thing. If you go in expecting much else, you'll certainly be disappointed.

Agreed! It had so much potential, and had an awesome cast, especially Ron Pearlman. But it was so predictable with absolutely NOTHING original in it.

Pretty fun. I liked it pretty much the same as Blue Harvest. I didn't think there was anything particularly obscene (apart from the couple of swear words that were probably bleeped) that they would have needed to cut from the broadcast. It's amazing the level of detail observed to get certain scenes to look exactly like the movie.

The Incredible Hulk: 8/10

Popped it in again yesterday for my second viewing, and it's still pretty good. They treated the source material with great respect. I was very impressed by the script itself, with the references to the TV show and how well-drawn the characters are. I don't remember in the comic books the whole angle about General Ross's involvement with Bruce's experiments, but I guess that they did that to give Ross a stronger motivation against Banner and it works. I loved the set up to the eventual sequel as well.

This one and Iron Man go great together. I really hope Captain America follows suit (but unfortunately I doubt it).

i hated this movie with a passion. at one point i was joking to myself, "dear god how many times are you going to do this - will you go as far as showing the little girl's viewpoint?" and then they did just that

might have worked if the story itself was a little more interesting, and they didn't repeat it sooo many times. and the problem with showing the same scene that much in a 90min movie, is there's no room left for character development. why does anyone do anything? i just found myself not caring. i think i preferred rashomon - at least the vantage point there tells you something about the characters.

The Girl Next Door - 7/10

No, not the one with Cuthbert, but the horror flick based on the Jack Ketchum novel. I watched in chunks, streaming from netflix (I'm beginning to like this feature, particularly for stuff I don't have to see on the big screen to appreciate), because someone mentioned that the blu was on sale for $8 at BB right now, along with some other B movie horror stuff.

I'm not into torture porn in general (the Hostels score very low for me), but I do enjoy the Saws and some other exceptions. There's definitely torture in this flick, and it's hard to watch. And while some of the backstory of the situation (it's based on a true story, same one as the movie showtime had called An American Crime), they seem to remain pretty true in spirit to the actual event itself.

Not a flick I'd ever watch again, and not one I'd recommend to the squeamish, but worth watching for the die hard horror fan.

It was also funny that I finished it up last night, and William Matherton plays a grown up version of one of the kids. Then, just a little while later he shows up on Lost - seeing him twice in one night was just bizarre! "Yes, it's true. This man has no ____."

Great race against time thriller.
Most of it is paced at a break neck speed, so you won't get bored. It also has a great message to show what a complete mess the Allied Governments choices were after the forces took control of Iraq.

It's nothing like Bourne and it's nothing like The Hurt Locker.

Some terrific special effects, and excellent sound mix. Yea, the plot was stupid in a few places, but not as many as I expected, largely because they abandoned talking about the causes and jumped into the disaster flick action right away.

I watched a Brazilian documentary about the Carandiru Penitentiary called "Prisoner of the Iron Bars" (original title: "O Prisioneiro da Grade de Ferro"). It's more about the prisoners' life there, rather than about the massacre that took place in the prison in 1992. It's a good thing, though, since there's already a great book (Estação Carandiru - I don't know if it's been translated to English) about that episode written by Dr. Drauzio Varella, a volunteer physician that worked at the jail, and there's also a great movie called Carandiru, based on his book. Prisoner of the Iron Bars is shot by the prisoners themselves, which is kind of cool - although, obviously, a lot of footage has been cut from the film.
It's a nice documentary if you want to see how one of the filthiest places on Earth looked like and how people managed to live there.
I recommend!

Precious is a great movie. It is definitely NOT a date movie though, if that's what your wife intended. Like "hey, let's go grab something to eat and finish out a great evening with Precious!"

Nothing will kill a good mood like that movie. It's depressing, hard to watch and disturbing but at the same time uplifting and hopeful. I'd say see it, but make sure you know what you're in for. And if you're the sensitive type, bring tissues. Like, a lot of them.

I felt similarly. CG was awesome, but on the whole I felt it was disappointing. Seems like they had an opportunity here to make a really freaky, cool film, but in an attempt to make it palatable to little kids (who made up the bulk of the audience at the showing I went to) they took away the tension and freakiness that would be necessary to making this a modern Labyrinth or something. I don't know if this was Burton's idea, or Disney's or something else, but it seemed half-hearted. I thought Depp was possibly the most disappointing part of the film, though. He Scottish brogue that popped up every now and then was cool, but apart from that it felt way to understated given the character. That stupid dance at the end sucked on every possible level.

The story was so predictable, too. The best part of the film apart from the CG, in my opinion, was Helena Bonham Carter. She was actually pretty freakin' awesome. And it was nice seeing Crispin Glover.

COP OUT
5.5 out of 10... Some laugh out loud moments but the Beverly Hills Cop music has to go. I had totally forgotten until I saw the credits that Kevin Smith directed this one.

Kevin Smith makes more misses than hits IMO

Well I'm a fan of his work-- but this one (Cop Out) was weird. It was like he was trying to make a parody of a buddy cop movie without it actually being a straight out parody... and the Beverly Hills Cop music all the way through was really hard to stand...

Throne of Blood. 10/10

I'm a big Akira Kurosawa fan and I saw this for the first time last night. It's Kurosawa's rendition of Macbeth, set in fuedal Japan. All I can say is awesome.

Toshiro Mifune plays the Macbeth character with subdued brooding and then unleashes exuberant craziness, particularly towards the end. Isuzu Yamada plays Lady Macbeth in a spectacular performance. That role seems to fit perfectly with the docile, reserved nature of the traditional Japanese wife. She pulls it off perfectly.

Better than Orson Welles' version, I think. If you feel like watching a superbly acted and directed film, I'd recommend this one.

Alice In Wonderland in IMAX - 5/10 - It was ok, boring at times and made you not care about anyone really. FX were decent, but the way the cgi characters moved was awkward and her falling down the rabbit hole looked awful. There was some good, the Cheshire Cat was pretty kewl.

Gotta agree with you and Entity... I'd be a little more generous and give it a 6/10. But still have all the same problems. It was much better than Burton's other remakes, but still a fairly weak and uninspired film. Also the 3D wasn't well utilized... I generally forgot it was 3D as it really didn't add much.

And I actually found Depp to be fairly bland in this one, he really didn't add much to the movie.

Ice Age 3: 6/10
Some funny parts, but more of the same.

The Uninvited: 5/10
Fairly uninspired ghost/mystery flick. Honestly, not even sure it woudl be considered a ghost flick... anyway, okay to watch if you've got nothing else going on :lol

Yes, Throne of Blood is awesome!!! Interesting tidbit: this was pretty much the film that ended the relationship between Mifune and Kurosawa. In the scene near the end where the arrows are being shot at Mifune, one came very close to him - Kurosawa demanded that they use real arrows and it pretty much ticked off Mifune to no end.

Atilla the Professor
03-14-2010, 05:24 PM
Whoa are you serious? Real arrows? Man I guess Mifune must have trusted Kurosawa enough to just do that scene, even if it did end their professional relationship. I was kind of hoping for a swordfight between Wachizu and Inui or Miki's son, but that rain of arrows was cool too.

Not the best of stories but some great fight coreography! If you like Martial Arts and Ninjas you should check it out.

Cargo - 6/10
Sci-Fi thriller from Switzerland with very high expectations.....unfortunately these weren't reached.

Rob Zombies: El Superbeasto - 7/10
A crazy animated flick based on the comic by Rob Zombie based on all the cool drawings Zombie used to doodle in the CD booklets and in some of the Music Videos.

A disappointment for me. Some of the kid's psychology was interesting, but not really explored. And the kid playing Max didn't do a whole lot for me. Worth watching once to see what Jonze does, but not a repeater.

Up In The Air 9/10
Now this one I enjoyed. Clooney is at his best, playing...well, pretty much playing himself. Both supporting actresses put in strong roles, and Jason Reitman has his old man's chops. Funny when it needed to be, touching when it hit close to home, and only occasionally predictable.

Yeah I agree. The movie was quite dull I think, minus the few gunfights thrown in here and there. I don't know if you've read the book, but it's far better than the movie.

That scene where DiCaprio puts a single round through a dude's head at like 50 yards with an sub-machinegun without aiming made me laugh.

Reinhardt
03-15-2010, 02:14 PM
I actually really enjoyed Body of Lies. I thought it was one of the first of the more recent military movies that did a good job on not catering to one political side. I like that it told in a way that gave people of either political side something to think about without immediately bashing it as something left or right wing. And DiCaprio and Crowe were amazing, especially Crowe who virtually dissapeared into his role.

Atilla the Professor
03-15-2010, 02:30 PM
To each his own then sir =) I agree that the film deserves note for not taking a political side, too many filmmakers insist on layering their projects with political agenda.

I guess it's just because I read the book beforehand that I was disappointed. The characters have far more motivation and depth to them in the book, and I felt the movie just ignored all that to get to the next action scene.

I can not believe that I watched Tank Girl.

0.1/10

I am pretty certain that Tank Girl is the single worst movie I have ever had the misfortune of watching.

In fact, it was so bad, that I didn't want to change the channel. I was transfixed in that annoying way that some people get when they are so thoroughly appalled by something that they can scarcely believe they are seeing something so bad and need to watch it just to verify to themselves that it really is as bad as it seems.

The Hidden Fortress.

Watched this earlier today. Obviously another Kurosawa classic, but one of the most infuriating films I've ever seen. The two main characters are two of the dumbest, most selfish people I've ever seen put up on the screen.

I nearly wanted to turn the movie off several times just because of their stupidity. They try to betray Toshiro Mifune's character and the princess like what, 5 times in that movie, and every time he saves them. But they keep betraying him and then running back for help. Arghh! I wanted someone to execute them by the halfway point of the film!

That being said, Mifune's character was awesome, as usual. His spear duel with the samurai lord was pretty kickass. Regarding the two bumbling fools in the film, apparently Lucas based R2-D2 and C3PO on them, and thank God not completely. I think they're more like the Jar Jar Binks of classic cinema lol.
