Donnie Brasco 10/10

The next time you watch this check out the special features (Exclusive featurette "Donnie Brasco: Out from the shadows") and when it comes to the interview of real life Joseph Pistone close your eyes and you will hear Johnny Depps voice (as Donnie).

Depp is an amazing actor, i've said this time and time again. Fantastic film too.

Yeah, agreed. That was the third time I'd watched it. I never saw it in the theatre so I bought it for my wife on DVD a couple of years ago, not really expecting to be too blown away by it, but I really enjoyed it.

i don't give too many 10s, but this would be a 10 for me too. i think it's my favourite pacino performance. and one of depp's finest too. as controversial as it may be, as a mafia movie, i think i prefer it to goodfellas and even the godfather.

not sure if this'd work as a movie, but maybe i'm just saying that coz i wasn't a big fan of the book. i used to love gaiman. but recently i find all his stories are a bit lacklustre. i actually couldn't watch stardust all the way through.

I'm with you on both of those.

Trek was amazing. Best movie of the year (though, admittedly, District 9 and Inglorious are still sitting on my shelf waiting to be viewed).

MBV3D was retarded. I'm not into cheesy "horror" movies, but my wife is ... and even she thought it was retarded. If they had quadrupled the nudity in it, at least it would've made it worth the time.

You have a point there, i think its a bit too complex to be made into a movie but, Neverwhere could easily be made into one, just the trouble is i would probally have no interest in it, i had a tough enough time getting half way through that one.

Hellboy II gave GDT a much larger budget and more control to create the creatures and worlds that he is so good at; I loved that film.

You know I'm all for gratuitous T&A but I think in a movie like this.. it just does not fit and brought the movie back a few.

I think the movie actually needed more action especially in the VR world.

I thought the first half of Tomorrow Never Dies was really good -- gets a little boring once they head to China.

The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day had their moments, but weren't up to the standard set by Goldeneye. I'd still rank them above most of the Moore movies, though -- and likely above the last couple of Connery movies (Diamonds are Forever, for instance).

:sick 7/10? Its a slow paced movie with a fantastic story to it. It really emphasizes on change, family and a bit of early American history. Its an important message imo. The birth of a new age and the importance of family. You really need to watch parts 1 and 2 back to back to get the full grasp on its point.

In terms of direction, cinematography, acting and story its still one of the best made films to date. Part II is the best sequel ever made imo.

An easy 10/10.

Seriously? I thought this film had classic written all over it.

i remember back in the day when a brainless action would be at least entertaining to watch and vaguely coherent. like a 6. this was just ridiculous. it's like the cameramen were hallucinating chimps on trampolines, and the director was an 8 yr old brainless moron on a sugar high. i've rarely seen such bad directing in my life. it seems these days lots of gore and a constantly moving vomit-inducing camera means action. damn blockbuster and it's 4 for 10 deal. it means i end up watching a lot of ____ a lot of the time!.

Finally saw Inglorious Basterds. Wow, loved it!

The best Tarantino flick not starring Uma Thurman by far. :D

People in the HT Aldo thread are saying Basterds was average? Crazy. Probably my personal favorite of all his work. I loved, loved, loved that all the nationalities throughout the movie spoke in their own respective languages.

Book of Eli - 8/10

Enjoyed it much more than I expected to. Ignoring the over preaching, it's a pretty cool perspective of how works of literature survived stuff like the Dark Ages, etc. translated to 'modern' times. A bit of fun Waterworld and Mad Max type stuff thrown in. But I hated the actress, thought she did a horrible job, and all I could think of was Meg from Family Guy :lol

A Perfect getaway: 7.5 outta 10, really good thriller, nice little twist, mostly predictable but still a fun flick

The Road: 8 outta 10, very hard hitting film, some plot points left unanswered; I must read the book and hopefully get an answer for these, although they may be minor.

Haven't seen it since 2008, and I still stand by that it's one of that years best. I'd even go as far as putting it in my top 20 for the decade. As a film it's absolutely mesmerizing. It has the feel of a foreign film. Low budget, overflowing with humanity and grit. You'll find yourself half way through and have to remind yourself what you're seeing isn't a documentary in a third world country, but is taking place in New York. As attentive and truthful a movie as you'll find.

TAKEN - 8/10

- Good story
- Great action
- Good acting
- Great pace

Really suprised me this one, wasn't expecting much and I hadn't read a lot about it. Neeson was good though I felt he needed to put a bit more emotion into his role at times. Also the ending was a bit too 'happy ending'.
But the action was excellent and the fights especially good.
Overall a great film I'd happily watch again.

Finally saw Hurt Locker - 8/10 - I did enjoy it for what it was, but I'm a little unsure why it's getting so much hype? Is it simply because a woman directed it? I'm cheering for Inglourious Basterds all the way during the Oscars!

Watched Julie & Julia the other night to see if it would inspire me to enjoy cooking more... it didn't, but it was a good movie (although I really didn't like Julie very much) - 7.5/10

No, it's because the directing in it is phenomenal. Virgin Suicides is a strong film directed by a female. I'm surprised to read a female saying that about another female, especially from Dusty. Gender of sex has nothing to do with great film making, if the person knows how to direct. I forgot that a female directed the Hurt Locker. I love all the subtle details in the film, like the dust lifting off the cars just as the bomb explodes. It's a strong story, and is very intense. Not a slow dull moment, okay... there were a few, but it is very intense nonetheless, and had me at the edge of my seat. It had great pacing for the most part, and kept your hands clutched to the chair hoping these guys would make it through. This film deserves to win over the much winded talk fest that is IB. But my favorite Oscar nominated film of the year is Evictus. Sadly, I see Avatar taking best picture. Great movie as well, but THAT one is definitely over hyped much like Heath Ledger's Joker performance was.

Yes, I just went there. Yet somehow Daniel Day-Lewis' portrayal of the Butcher doesn't get an Oscar. What a snub!

Well, we can agree to disagree, right? I thought the pacing was off in Hurt Locker, and I do believe that *some* of the HYPE is due in part to the fact that a woman directed it... and that she's Cameron's ex :lol Just like *some* of the hype over Ledger's performance was due in part to his untimely death.

In my opinion, Inglourious Basterds is a masterpiece. A true work of art, in all aspects; from cinematography, to editing, to writing, to directing, to acting... I could make a detailed list of why, but I won't bore you ;)

Not everyone appreciates QT's work and I can respect that. As for the Hurt Locker, I loved it. Just a great all around movie that actually showed what goes on over there. I'm not sure if anyone else saw it, but there was a lot of advertisements that kind of pushed the fact that Cameron's ex directed it on the movie forums. She's made some other really decent flicks too so she's not a one hit wonder.

One of my favorite movies! Absolutely gorgeous to look at (and that was on DVD), fantastic story - very moving. And almost none of it was done with CGI - he actually filmed in all those locations. Plus, a ton of the movie was shot where I was born, or close to it - Jaipur, India.

It's definitely not for everyone though.

Absolutely fantastic! I can't believe it took me this long to see it. And I was able to see it with the correct subtitles as well.

A few points:
2 favorite scenes:
1. When Oskar bats the bully in the ear - Oskar's expression of satisfaction was priceless
2. When Eli enters Oskar's place without him inviting him and starts to bleed out - very very cool, something I have never seen before in the vampire genre - much better than an invisible wall

The one scene that I wasn't crazy about was the ending which Eli saves Oskar in the swimming pool. The only way that would have made sense was if she never left in the first place, and then heard him talking on the phone. If that's other people's interpretation, then i'm cool with it. It just seemed to coincidental that she would appear and save the day.

The Reader (finally rented it on BluRay)

9 out of 10, only losing a point for not being filmed in German. Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes and the young German actor, Davis Kross, were simply phenomenal.

I though it delivered an important message about recognising that ordinary people who become involved in evil things are not necessarily inhuman monsters (see Inglorious Basterds for that view belaboured ad nauseum).

Sorry but I saw Inglorious Basterds as doing little more than cartoonishly dehumaising Nazis as much as Nazis dehumanised Jews, gays and other people.

Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill are some of my favourite films, but IB was just a misguided, overblown revenge fantasy (from a non-Jew I might add) with no bearing on reality.

Nothing...and I mean, nothing is more satsfying then watching Nazi's get blown up, and beaten to death!

I guess seeing innocent people survive the Holocaust la Schindler's List or The Pianist is far more satisfying to me than compounding senseless violence with more violence. But that is why some people love an anti-hero like Magneto and others an idealist like Charles Xavier (just to use the nerdiest reference I could think of :D).

I think DDL is just a bit too far up his own arse sometimes, in much the same way as Ralph Fiennes is (I find him hard to watch most of the time, but I did like The Constant Gardener), they are both so earnest and full of the sense of the importance of every nuance. You get the sense that he is always acting, I never find him that naturalistic.
I thought DDL was just doing a pantomime impression of De Niro for Scorcesses benefit in 'Gangs' (watch it again with this in mind, it does kind of ruin it a bit).

It's funny but I totally buy into DDL's performances. I know exactly what you mean about looking like he's always "acting" since I recognize it in other actors (like Wynona Ryder and Candice Bergen and the guy who played Lex's genetically engineered brother Julian in Smallville that ran the Daily Planet for a bit...). But I totally don't see it in DDL. I know he went completely over the top in Gangs, but I thought he really sold it and I found it perfectly convincing that his character would behave in that exact same way in real life. The speech patterns and mannerisms seemed to flow so naturally from him. And I didn't really see any DeNiro in the performance.

The only criticism I could possibly give DDL is that he made the There Will Be Blood character a little too similar to the Gangs character. But again, I thought he was completely believable and mesmerizing.

Just had to chime in! ;)

Just got back from watching Percy Jackson and the ridiculously long movie title. I'll give it a 5/10....not horrible, but nothing new or special. I'm sure the next book in the series will be made into a movie, but I don't see it taking off like Harry Potter or Twilight.

Dusty
02-12-2010, 01:27 PM
Since this is a 'rating' thread, I don't want really want to get into an argument about nuance in film, but it appears that some may have missed it in IB. The Nazi's were not dehumanized AT ALL; in fact, I found that the film did a good job making them all very human, especially the officer who was in love with the theater owner. (But then, if you didn't watch it all the way through, you missed the best part of his particular character arc.) Waltz's character was AWESOME in his selfish purpose; not because he was a Nazi, but because that's who he was. He could care less who he was fighting for, as long as he was on the winning side. Even Hitler had his humanity, albeit in a very wacked out way. (I LOVED him in the cape.)

Anyway, it's pointless to argue this, like I said. I simply found much more subtlety and irony and DEPTH in IB than in any other film this year.

District 9 and UP are my second choices.
