Going into it, I heard it was good, BUT
• I didn't know why specifically
• I also heard it's not what the trailer made it out to be, which was a high-octane action thriller. Since so many folks complained about this, I naturally prepared for the opposite: something wordy, slow-paced, and bloated.
Wrong on both counts and I still loved it. Then again, I've always been partial toward movies like this and enjoyed 2049 for similar reasons. Artful, but neither obnoxiously poppy (like Baby Driver) nor overly-pretentious (like your stereotypical arthouse film).
EDIT: Revisited the trailer and it's pretty terrible. Besides misrepresenting the movie, it spoils so much. Thankfully I watched it years before the actual film and, in that time, forgot everything about it. :lol

Holy cow WTF did I just watch. I'm still processing this. So let me get this straight....
An alien lands at the light tower, can create or mimic a current lifeform, Kane lights himself on fire, tells his Clone/Copy to find Lena, he does, she goes in the shimmer, allows a copy of herself to be made, tricks that copy into lighting itself on fire with the phosphorus grenade and in turn burns up the alien's nest. THEN....all Garth from Wayne's World, Lena comes out to figure out the copy of Kane isn't Kane and they both hug- THE END? WTF? Complete mind F
Yeah, I really liked Annihilation too. I'll probably end up picking it up on 4K.

It starts off terribly bad but by the middle I actually started to enjoy it. I was a fan of the first XXX so as long as you don't take these films to seriously you can enjoy them for what they are. Yeah. I was happy to support Neeson on this one and he did well enough but the script was terrible and the main bad guy is one of the worst actors I've seen on screen in some time.
They should have looked for more inspiration from Jackie Chan's The Foreigner on how to properly do a film like this. Oh well, at least the trailer for John Wick 3 looked sweet on the big screen.

The fact that the new Death Wish got savaged and Cold Pursuit got kudos is just another reminder of how unreliable RT scores actually are.

Phantasm 4: 7/10
If Phantasm 4 had been shot on film, with some reasonable financial investment in the production, it could have exceeded even the first film. It was really well done, but can't ignore how cheap looking it is. And personally, I don't care for Coscarelli continuing to re-cast certain actors from the first film, pretending as if they haven't aged in 30 years when some of these guys are old as dirt now. The ideas are good, but. . .

The film gave me a new appreciation of Queen. Truth be told I haven't particularly liked them over the years because their songs have been used heavily in TV ads - which sort of cheapened them for me. So I'd hear a Queen song and be reminded not of terrific concerts but of an annoying ****ing ad interrupting something I was watching.
So, for me, the film helped restore their greats to greatness.

I didn't see the trailer... Emma Stone was enough to get me interested.
Oh gawd, where do I start on all the things I hated about this film... it had a flatline story arc, so the one-note narrative didn't really go anywhere... the only clue that a conclusion is imminent is the mind-numbing awareness that you've been sitting there for nearly 2 tedious hours. When the final shot closes on black and credits roll it's a jaw-dropping WTF moment. The cinematography was beautiful in parts, but the wide-angle shots fulfilled no dramatic purpose and ended up feeling gimmicky (echoes of Go-Pro Hobbits) - as did the score. It was a movie that tried to pull all the clever, "arty" levers that many cinema critics clearly loved, but at the end of it was a tired story told through excellent performances of characters we don't give a toss about.
I still love Emma Stone.

As bad as I remembered. I believe the last time I tried to watch it was as far back as 2013. Even the best scenes are ruined by some stupid piece of dialogue, stunted line delivery or cartoon special effects. Just an awful film from beginning to end.

That scene alone is worth at least 6 points:dunno
Obviously I don't agree. Nothing in it is compensatory enough to garner a 6/10. As I mentioned, even when I was thinking to myself - ''wait a minute, this was a good sce - ohhhh..that line, that delivery, no.'' The very last scene between Anakin and Obi-Wan on Mustafar comes to mind - great until Anakin's utterly juvenile ''I hate you!'' line reminding you of what a twat the character has been throughout AOTC and ROTS and how unlike the OT Vader he is. Scene ruined.
Well you've got to bite the bullet and watch TPM now, lol.

Agree to disagree I guess then. The prequels are 33% good, 33% nostalgia, and 33% so bad it’s good to me.

How To Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World - C+
An underwhelming villain and disjointed plot elements all lead up to an ending that while very emotional, feels rushed considering it is the end of the series and completely falls apart when examined logically. Its like putting your dog to sleep for a splinter. Dramatic sure, but also dumb and unnecessary.

That opening scene with a young Eric is still one of the most poignant, well done scenes of any comic book movie I can think of. It hung with me on my first viewing in the theater and it still does. The final fight scene doesn’t hold up too well now but overall a great movie.

Interesting... I loved it. I thought it was much better than the second film, both visually and narratively. The ending did feel rushed though.
For me most of it was a mess.
The villain had no clear or relatable goal other than "killing dragons makes you brave". He was essentially just like the villain from the last movie but less interesting. And while fairly irrelevant, all I could think when I saw him onscreen was that he looked exactly like Anthony Bourdain
The decision early on to straight up abandon Berk was ultimately meaningless.
The Hidden World element had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the plot. Nor is it really explained what it is.
Hiccup's original plan was for everyone to move into the Hidden World. No one ever explains why this plan is abandoned.
While it made sense for Hiccup to release Toothless to allow him to live his life (although it was incredibly rushed considering that the two were basically symbiotic creatures for the past 10 years) it is never explained why absolutely everyone decided on a dime to completely ditch their dragons and have everyone be ok with it.
The decision to ditch the dragons completely contradicts the theme of the entire freaking series, which is that humans and dragons are stronger and happier together and aren't meant to be apart.
Considering it was established in the movie that The Hidden World was only a short flight from New Berk, why weren't Hiccup and Toothless constantly visiting one another? It appears that they hadn't seen each other in 10 years. They could have visited every day had they wanted to.

An absolute classic.I watched Willow again recently, and I'm sorry to say our experiences were very different. I wanted to like it, I really did, as a matter of fact, I almost purchased it, I'm glad now that I rented instead. I think the worst part for me were the brownies, they were so irritating that it was hard to enjoy anything that happened within 5 minutes of their screen time. Luckily they mostly disappeared in the final 1/3 of the movie. I think there was a decent movie in there somewhere, but Howard/Lucas just seemed to sabotage it every chance they got. ...and the Trolls... the Trolls! Barely looked better than a guy in a cheap gorilla costume. [emoji38]

Yeah the troll designs were very uninspired. Sorry to hear that you didn't like it but I'd say you're in majority on this one. Even though it was an obvious attempt to be another "Star Wars" it definitely only resonated with a small fraction of the audience like myself.

So glad that Netflix just added this to their roster of Bond flicks, I freaking love this movie! Sure it drags in spots, Sean Bean's death is comically over the top and the miniatures used for the MiG crashing into the radar dish were straight out of a Toho Godzilla flick but otherwise this movie absolutely rocks from beginning to end! :rock
Brosnan is a straight up badass and it just might have the two sexiest Bond chicks out of the entire series (for me.) This movie has kind of a shockingly high body count and the tank chase is just as superb as it was 24 years ago. Too bad I really didn't enjoy any of Brosnan's other flicks but at last he'll always have this one.
I didn't even realize until now that the director Martin Campbell also helmed Jackie Chan's "The Foreigner" a couple years back. No surprise because I thoroughly enjoyed that one too.

Goldeneye is about as perfect as a Bond film there is. I love Bond and I love the Daniel Craig films but Goldeneye has it all. Some of the best action in the series, great villain and villainess, good "take over the world" plot, M was fantastic, great locals, and Pierce was perfect and such a bad ass. Really in that one film he is the 2nd best Bond after Sean Connery.

For me I thought that Casino Royale and Skyfall were really well done but they have next to no rewatch value for me. I just don't find Craig to be that likable in the role which I consider an important aspect of the character. In Casino Royale he's a smug friendless ***hole and in Skyfall and Spectre he's borderline sexual predator. Awesome cinematography and action in the Craig flicks though.

He lacks the charm, but I do find him believable in the action scenes. Who do you think should play Bond next? I think Cavill should get a shot.
He lacks the charm, but I do find him believable in the action scenes.
Yeah I get why they cast him in the post-Bourne/Mission:Impossible era of spy movies but he just never really felt like Bond to me. He was almost more of an "evil Bond" like Sean Bean in GoldenEye that the real Bond would end up fighting. IMO of course. Obviously Craig has been really popular so I'm sure I'm in the minority on that one. At least they did a good job of putting Craig through hell in his films so that at least you end up rooting for him on that alone.
Who do you think should play Bond next? I think Cavill should get a shot.
After 26 movies over half a century I kind of think they could just retire the character but of those in the running yeah I'd lean toward Cavill as well. As for him being a borderline sexual predator, I'd have to go back and watch again but *cough* Connery *cough* -- I know -- different time and different mores.

There was nothing outright bad about this movie, but I do feel like they got the wrong actress for the role, her personality varied from bland to (almost) insufferable. I was one of the people that ignored and didn't care about the social media fiasco surrounding it, but for her to have such a big mouth, I would hope she would have the acting ability and screen presence/charisma to balance it out. She does not, she feels very out of place, especially when I think of the other actors in the other marvel movies.
I wouldn't go as far as to place a "Mary-Sue" title on her. But she seems way overpowered. She's superman without the pesky kryptonite allergy.
I really enjoyed much of the rest of the cast, and can't really think of any other weak links in the chain. I especially enjoyed SLJ and Jude Law.
I guess I need to go back and watch some of the other movies again, because one plot point, that I don't want to spoil (thanks tapatalk), confused me.

One thing holding back Goldeneye was Erik Serra Score.. It was not all that good.
It has some good bits here and there and I like the song in the end credits but overall it's not one I'd listen to much due to the relative lack of Bond theme. David Arnold fixed that for the rest of Brosnan's films....think he dialled it back again in Casino Royale because of the idea that Bond wasn't Bond yet.
Do not retire Bond!!!

Actually thinking of how likable Arnold was in True Lies Cavill probably could stay bulked up if they otherwise hit the right tone.
Speaking of other Bonds I also revisited Dr. No on Netflix (MAN what a glorious restoration) and while it still doesn't particularly grab me as a compelling adventure/spy flick his first "Bond, James Bond" at the blackjack table just might be one of the top three most iconic film moments *ever.* Then of course Honey Rider walking onto the beach being probably the second most iconic scene at least in the Bond series (sorry Halle.)

Having a really good time with the first film, and seeing the reviews for the second gave me hope.
I should never expect a sequel horror film to be any good...
Quite typical and cliche..... and too much God is great stuff for my tastes.
Horror film audiences are too easy on rating films....
Scary monster is all it takes these days.

Thoroughly entertaining, suspenseful, funny, and straight up bizarre. Unfortunately it doesn’t stick the landing preventing it from joining the horror greats. Jordan Peele has great potential, a couple movies from now (hopefully still doing horror) he definitely has the ability.

A great big goofy superhero movie. One that reminds me of simpler times in the superhero genre.
The Dirt (Motley Crue movie on Netflix) 7 out of 10 - Dumb movie that was still fun to watch. Could have been longer. Would have like to see more of the dirt. :)

I just saw this, and would give it the same score. I'm probably a bit biased because I'm a big fan of their music (or at least, their earlier music), but despite that it was pretty much what you would expect, it was a fun movie, with some genuinely effective, emotional moments. I was very impressed with the guy playing Tommy Lee. In a few scenes I could have swore it was actually him. Apparently he's a rapper. . .? Guy playing Ozzy also did a decent job.
As I understand it, those guys can't really stand each other though, and didn't interact much on their latter tours. So from that POV, it's a bit misleading. And I'm sure there are many other areas of the film where it shows them in a more positive light than they deserve. In that sense there are parallels to the Queen film, which took some pretty major liberties. But it feels more or less right about things.

Rewatchability: 7/10
You know people give this on alot grief, but its actually a pretty decent sequel, albite with some major flaws.
The worst of them the cast. The two main actors are pretty terrible, which is a shame cause the story is pretty good, with an ending that is really done well.

Quite a simplistic overly “happy ending” film for a group if guys who would have ended up as homeless junkies if not for some luck and talent.
Glosses over the reality of headcases with serious drug and alcohol issues , and greedy intentions.
If they made this film about a generic band it might have gone up a few points....but it likey just a big ad fir the reunion tour upcoming....the “we blew all our cash again” tour.

The Meg- 6 out of 10
Predictable, pandering, over the top, ridiculous....and well made. :lol I liked the actors, the acting was serviceable, the film looked good, the directing and editing was pretty good, it was well paced, the effects were done well, and overall it was fun.
A few tweaks to the script to make it a little less predictable (I predicted all the deaths, beats, and plot) and this wouldv'e been so much better.

I am always surprised when I see a film that I remember as being past its time or overdone, and its not. For some reason I always remember the worst parts of this film and forget how many great scenes it has. It doesnt help that I really do not like the main character in Louis. But over all this film is still great. Shorten the stuff with Claudia, and a but less of Louis brooding and it would be a great classic.

Triple Frontier, Netflix
Tired and lazy ex-special forces heist action-thriller. The set pieces were pedestrian and there was no tension. The whole movie disappears up its own arse in the scene where the most expert and disciplined of the group transforms into an ill-disciplined amateur singlehandedly responsible for what happens in the second half. Watch it with the skip function and it’s not a complete waste of time/10

Wife started it and I was casually watching it. Midway through the first episode I was hooked. Klaus is my fav of all the Academy members. Does 5 even have a name? I'm guessing they'll show us how Ben actually dies in season 2? Was a lot better than I thought it would be.

Suspiria - 7/10
Not as fantastical as the original but it was played a lot more straight so fair pass. Tonally awkward at times. Technically brilliant. Soundtrack was fine despite Thom Yorke's wails which has become more than tedious at this point.
Green Book - 2/10
Had to check it out on the basis that it won best picture. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali are wasted in an incredibly streamlined plot and platitudinous social commentary. I have no idea to who this movie was targeted towards despite as Oscar-bait for Academy panel members (and it worked apparently). Gave it a sparing 2/10 as it was engaging enough to keep me awake throughout.

It's based on true events from recordings of conversations with his son and letters sent to his wife. Amazing movie, loved it.

I'm kind of presupposed into giving them the benefit of the doubt about the true events considering the story was quite tame - it's just that I can't seem to take the 'based on a true story' disclaimer seriously anymore.

The concept seemed viable, but the execution was terrible.
Mostly i just remember one of them being taunted by a schoolyard bully.

Yep, there wasn't much more to it than that. Hip med students put themselves in comas and then come back taunted by kids they messed with as children. Lame. I think over the years my memory of Flatliners must have blended with Jacob's Ladder because I was expecting *way* more when I finally revisited it.
