Very worthy sequel, Villain not as memorable or charismatic as syndrome is my only real complaint.

Halloween - why is this so revered?/10

I had never watched this before, thoroughly bored with it, from beginning to end.

Is this a reverse The Thing? Meaning; this was acclaimed since it came out but it's really bad today, vs The Thing which was panned and now it's considered a masterpiece (and rightfully so), is it because it was early in the genre and people were still impressionable?

Don't mind me, I hate slashers, the only slasher I like is Terminator.

It was influential, and it has better quality than most of the copycats, so people take it more seriously. Plus, MM looks cool and has a cool theme. That's all I can think of to be honest. It's probably not as impressive anymore since you've seen it all before in other movies, but they probably got it from HW.

Its was really the first of its kind, an actual scary slasher flick, in an age when there were not really a-lot of slasher flicks.

The tone, and cinematography were well above the rest of the standard “horror” of the time. Its set the stage and tone for the rest of he slasher flicks of the 80’s, everything else was just copying it. But I see your point, if you didnt see this film near the time of release or within 10 years after, your could never understand. The current generation feels the same about a-lot of films.. considered classics.

Baby Driver 7.5/10

Ed Wright is on of my favorite filmmakers, and his style is evident right from the start. Whats also evident is the typical plot to follow. Its entertaining enough, and rewatchable as most ED films are. But something keeps it from being great.....actors ,great...sets and cinamotgraphy, awesome, soundtrack, great....but in the end a typical heist film with some great scenes is still a typical heist film.....tons of fun though!

I almost never go for the "it didn't age well" but it's so the case with this one.

I suppose it looks good, characters are well written and don't do lots of stupid ****, but apart from that I see the same genre tropes that make the genre almost self-parodic, I know they weren't tropes back then.

It's what I was thinking, without context and not having seen anything like it before, it should've been very effective then.

The current generation feels the same about a-lot of films.. considered classics.
I think this is the first one I can remember that I didn't "click" with, for almost everything else I see the appeal and the excitement holds, or gets better even.

For this I can picture the appeal back THEN, but the excitement is just freaking gone.

I can't imagine fans of this one having it on loop or something, like Predator, Jaws or ROTLA fans have those on loop, I can totally see Freddy and Jason beating this one on that department too.

There's really nothing about it to see today, is there?

I suppose, on paper, I understand why it was so revered back then... It's just hard to feel it now, it's the first time I can unfortunately say I don't get the fandom for it today

I suppose all there's left is the respect for having broken new ground? Even if it's not effective today.

The Clown Prince of Crime
06-18-2018, 10:56 PM
The problem with all those 80's slasher films, is that the villain often becomes the star and the reason people go see them, so subsequent sequels become less effective as horror films, and more about creative kills and the villain chewing the scenery. The Jason, Freddy, and Chucky films were smart enough to realize not to take themselves too seriously, which is why they're more fun and have replay value. It's silly horror. However, the Halloween franchise never went there, and it took itself too seriously, so the films haven't aged well, compared to other slasher movies, that are probably worse films, but they're fun and cheesy.

Still, the idea of Michael Myers still works, and is design is still very effective too, it's the tropes that no longer work.

While I do not care for the original movie either, I understand why people love it. It was the first slasher movie that wasn't incredibly silly and had decent acting across the board. All previous slashers were mostly cheesy and poor in some aspects, so no one took them seriously.

I only love the ideas behind it, not the actual film. Every time I try to watch it I feel like there's a lot of wasted potential and screen time.

Batman V Superman - :lol/10 - I saw it on tv this weekend. Man, even some of the action is terrible and poorly choreographed. Tomb Raider (2018)- 7 out of 10
Terrible beginning from bad editing and music in the fight and bike chase scenes, after that, once Lara starts her quest the film really gets interesting. Loved Vikander as Lara, a thousand times better than Jolie. Walton Goggins made a good and interesting villain. The story was good, the action was great. I liked that Lara wasn't shown to be a superhuman, fighting much larger stronger men and beating them. I got a strong Indiana Jones vibe from how Lara was depicted in the action. At times she got her ass handed to her but she was tough and cunning, managing to win in the end.
I hope they make a sequel.

The first one looks like a masterpiece compared to this. The plot is basic, stupid and cringy. They really want you to care, they really do but their attemps are not effective at all. Rexy was reduced to a poser and Blue is the main dino by far, I'm fine with that but they're no longer believable as dinosaurs. They're more like giant magical creatures that help people when they are most needed, I wouldn't be surprised if they start talking in the next movie.

Jurassic Park : Fallen Kingdom 5/10, as a summer popcorn blockbuster 7/10

Some of it was well done, the gothic look of the rooftop chase felt very Hammer Horror to me.

So observations did you all notice this?
There were MANY scenes that were shot that literally mimicked camera angles and motions from the original film.

Two come to mind right away. The scene where Mazy is catching her breath and then woke up and told to run, is exactly what Lex does in JP1

Also the dumb waiter scene where she is pulling down the door, another parallel to Lex doing the exact same thing in the kitchen.

Also the scene where the hid behind the log, thats the same damn log Grant and the kids hid behind....

Theres alot more of this in the film as well...

And did anyone else get a Raiders feel from some of the fight/chase scenes?

It was good, very good, but definitely way overhyped which made it a little bit of a let down for me. Everything I read about it, and the huge box office numbers made me think I was going to be blown away. I would say it's a strong Marvel movie but falls in the middle of the list somewhere. Definitely not nearly as good as the Russo Brothers movies. I liked Killmonger with his personal vendetta and the larger messages about society and politics, but I feel like they didn't quite go far enough with either of those ideas. Overall enjoyable but just not in the "great" category.

I watch "Independence Day" every year on the 4th of July. I forget how long I've been doing it. Like Die Hard at Christmas.

I do it in installments. On July 2nd, I watch the first part, then part two on July 3rd, and the finale on July 4th. Remember the ads when it came out? "July 2, they arrive...July 3, they attack....July 4, we fight back!"

I know it's a "bad" movie. There are incredible leaps of logic and suspension of disbelief required to enjoy the film. But I think it's simply the best "bad" movie of all time. Like truly enjoyable. It has such awesome pacing. I absolutely love how they set it up slowly, introduce the big ensemble of characters, and then it all goes into overdrive when the aliens attack.

Remember that very first teaser from the Super Bowl, showing the White House blow up? I was so insanely hyped for the movie. I saw it opening weekend. I absolutely loved it. Just a fun roller coaster of a movie. I love all the emotional beats; how each of the main characters suffers a loss, but they all win in the end. Whitmore's speech before the attack is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

Cheesy as all hell? Yes, absolutely. But it's so much fun to see it slowly set up, and then spring into action, just like the original Jurassic Park.

Another "bad" movie I love for similar reasons is Troy. Gotta be the director's cut though. All that set up, then pay off.

I don't think the movies being made now have the same sense of world building, or pacing, or characters. They're all just trash now. Dumbed down to the point of retardation. ID4 was "dumb" but it wasn't stupid. It was everything you could want out of a big summer action movie.

Independence Day: 10/10

Looking forward to my rewatch next year.

(There is no sequel in my universe. That rotten abortion of a film doesn't exist to me.)

Movies I've seen since May:

Infinity War 10/10 Loved it. Can't wait for the sequel
Deadpool 2 7.5/10 OG was better but this is a worthy sequel.
Sicario 2 7/10 Not as good as the original yet I did enjoy it. Left some important plot issues unresolved to leave an opening for a sequel.
Incredibles 2 8/10 Great fun at the movies. Liked the original better only because the villain was better in the first one.
Jurassic World 2 6/10 Great visuals but not much story wise. Typical summer popcorn movie that kids would probably like (at least my kids did).

My second time viewing it and I actually really enjoyed the Kylo and Luke scenes even if the film around them was a disaster. Normally wouldn't rate it so high but those two characters sort of saved the film for me.

Mission Impossible II - 1 out of 5 - This was never very good and time plus a bunch of far better sequels have not been kind to it.
Mission Impossible III - 4 out of 5 - Best Villain in the series IMO.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - 3 out of 5 - I would give this an extra star but the villain is weak IMO and its goes on a bit too long
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - 4 out of 5 - So close to being tired with my fav. It has Ethan Hunts best female lead and a pretty good villain. It just overstays its welcome a bit.

Funny how the first Mission Impossible has the least action but IMO has the best pace and just fly's by.

Yeah that was definitely the most mindblowing aspect of that sequence. I don't know that I've ever seen bloody make-up seemingly applied in real-time like that. I wonder if she had the make-up all along and they just CG'd her face to appear clean for the beginning of the sequence.

Ready Player One- 7 out of 10. A fun and cleaver story. The nostalgia aspect worked for me and the CGI effects were good. The camera moved waaay too much in the oasis parts and with so much going on, it was a bit nauseating.

Dunkirk- 10 out of 10. A strong and compelling story filmed and edited perfectly together. The acting, sound, and visuals were fantastic.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle- 4 out of 10. This lacked the charm and comedy the first one had. This felt tonally off from the first movie, replaced the fantasy animals that were an essential part of the first movie for boring people, the comedy felt forced, and the acting by the Rock, is well, the same as any other character he's portrayed, I'm tired of it. Karen Gillan and Jack Black were good though.

Atomic Blonde- 7 out of 10. Great visuals, music, and some truly remarkable action scenes. Charlize Theron is stunning and bad ass. This could've been a really great movie, if they didn't screw it up with the interrogation flash forwards and instead told the story as a straightforward narrative. The interrogation just took me out of the story.

Blindspotting - 10/10

Best movie of the year so far, I'm not sure why the trailers made it out to look like some heavy drama because it's really 80% comedy and a really funny film about a guy in his last three days of probation just trying to stay out of trouble hanging out with his best friend and it's incredibly well done. I wasn't buying the hype when I was reading about the film as I never come out of these films liking it as much as critics do but this one is amazing.

Christopher Robin - 8/10

Loved it. I've been reading that people don't like it that Pooh and friends are actually real and talk to people in the real world but I guess it never clicked with me when I watched the cartoon that these were toys that Christopher played with and he just imagined they were real so the real world hijinks Pooh gets into in this film was really charming to me and were actually my favorite parts of the film. The films biggest weakness to me is that it's just so simple of a story and there's nothing original about it other than it being a live action winnie the pooh movie.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 98% aggregate score. Metacritic an 86. The movie is technically well-made, but built on such an unimpressive story (getting real tired of the whole "killing millions to save billions" schtick) loaded with so many spy film cliches that I'm loathe to give it any more than a slightly above average rating. I weep for modern blockbusters and modern critics alike. Standards have truly fallen and with them, so has the quality of event films.

Skyscraper. I keep thinking Dwayne The Rock Johnson keeps taking crazy movie roles like Rampage and this will bomb or just be bad but end up being a lot of fun! I give it a strong 7.

Ghost Story's. It was o.k a few creepy scarring bits but fell to megh imo give a 4.

Very Hard to be a horror fan. My favorite horror this year has been INCIDENT IN GHOSTLAND. A Pure 10 in my book this horror is not for the easily scared its very scarring fast moving film not messing around go's right into the Madness of horror.

Waiting for Summer of 84 to drop online next.

Going to update this one: 5/10. Smarter than the average film, but stupid for Alien. First viewing high must've gotten me on that original score.

I loved it, and really wasn't expecting to, but the action scenes carried it for me, the whole '4th wall' thing which I do find strange just seems to work, makes me want a Deadpool figure in my collection and will defiantly add a Cable and would probably get a Domino if it was ever made.
