TLJ - 1/10 One big block-o-cheese

Worst SW movie to date for me...Just awful. There were absolutely no emotional moments for me in this. No real connection to any of the characters, even Luke or Leia. I cringed throughout the whole movie.

I didn't wait two years to watch Luke casually toss his long lost light saber over his shoulder to get a cheap laugh or see Snoke cut in two by Kylo using the force and not even find out how he rose to power or who exactly he was.

I didn't need to see Luke squeeze the teet of some weird creature just to get a scene of him drinking blue milk and spilling it down his beard.
I didn't want to see Yoda cackling and dancing after setting ancient Jedi manuscripts on fire with a lightning bolt.
Every scene shot on that island was a waste.

I didn't need to see Leia float back to a ship from the vacuum of space like a flying nun.

I feel bad for Hamill. This just wasn't the movie his character deserved. It was as if it was intentionally made not to resemble anything in TFA but instead made as a bad, stand alone sci-fi comedy.

Ya know, there was one scene in this whole movie that, had TLJ been built around what the feeling of this scene was suppose to get across to the audience, would have made TLJ a great SW film. But since this scene was in the context of this movie, even it fell absolutely flat with me.

When R2replayed Leia's message. That would have made a great film had the feeling of that scene been the backbone of the movie.

I'm aware that there is MUCH hate with the movie (even just seeing the ratings in this thread), so I'm staying out of the movie thread!

Really liked the movie though! I'll put it at #4 on my SW movie list, just under TFA (like, only a quarter of a point or half a point lower) which I thought had a little more charm in their characters.

TLJ: after two viewings 6/10. I found more to enjoy than to dislike however; the stuff I disliked was so bad it pulled me away from the film at times.

True score is 5/10 however; Iím trying remain optimistic since the trilogy isnít finished and it could wind up setting up VIIII beautifully.

Iím changing to a 9/ 10.....with all nonsense following this movie it has transcended cinema making it a true masterpiece...

Kidos to Disney and Kennedy for the magnificent insight to a larger world...not many films can lie claim to such a feat

The Last Jedi - 4/10

I'll accept and even applaud bold new ideas as long as they are properly earned within the film, fan service be damned. And that's just the problem here. I wasn't offended by what Disney have done. In fact, I felt nothing at all because the film provides absolutely no reason to care.

Every significant moment -- and there are many on paper -- is unearned, hollow, and devoid of real consequence. Every conflict and subsequent solution is the result of lazy, convenient, and illogical writing riddled with holes. Every character an empty shell relying on their legacy from previous films to garner sympathy in this one as they are taken apart and diluted without proper thought.

Put simply: a lot happens in The Last Jedi, but none of it feels like it matters, its twists, shocks, and characters wasted.

Hamfisted garbage pretentiously and non-academically pushed by shills.

A recap of my scores for the Disney-era Star Wars films for context:

The Force Awakens - 7/10

Rogue One - 8/10

That doesn't make any sense though. Why have a graduated scale of 1-10 when you claim anybody who chooses 1/10 doesn't understand the scale? If my opinion of a movie is as low as it gets I'm not going to choose 3/10...unless it was on a scale of 3 to 10.

Well , I guess you have a point.....

IMO The scale includes cinematography, acting, effects, pacing, editing, as well as story, plot and overall enjoyment....and no way you can score this a 1/10 with that in mind.

But if itís just pure enjoyment , ignoring all other factors....then 1/10 could be a score someone could give.....

As much as I hated SS squad I still gave it a 4/10 simply because it was put together well and had some decent acting.....

Ah, I see where you're coming from then. I figure it still involves a lot of personal opinion even in all those areas you mentioned though.

I rated TLJ as a 1/10 based on my overall opinion of the movie as I do all movies I guess. Was it great or terrible, ok or not that good.

But if I had to increase it based on something I thought it did well then it would be only for some of the visuals, i.e. the look of the salt planet as the ships flew across it. Regardless, that minor positive didn't increase my overall opinion of the movie enough to like it anymore than I did.

I'll be honest though, I'll always grade a Star Wars movie from a completely different angle than most any other movie. That's why it's one of the very few movies I can think of that I'd rate a 1/10.

Good or Bad movie, acting, directing, script, budget, pacing, plot ect all boil down to: Did you enjoy the movie? You have well made movies like American Hustle, that were boring as fauk, so I gave it a poor rating. And Death Wish 3 which is all around bad but enjoyable as hell and gets a high rating.

First time watchin' it at home, just to see if I was wrong... That's the last time I'm watchin' it. Some good elements and character bits ruined by boring characters, overcomplicated plot, horrible dialogs, uncharismatic leads and messy narrative. Plus out-of-place cameos by Vader and hillarious CGI heads.

:) nice!!!! all of my friends i went with and co workers loved it. i didn't even know there was backlash until i came on here to see the new Leia HTs. i hadn't been on here in months. if people didn't like it that's fine. they can express why, nothing wrong with that. just like i can say why i loved it. i was a huge fan of TFA so i was looking forward to the next chapter and it didn't disappoint me. i cried like 5 times. XD. i laughed. i was just very into the story. plus i was sold long ago with the porgs they are super adorable :love

bye guys. try to play nice^^ :wave

Pretty much the same here! The two people I went with both thought it was great! I also teared up a lot in a few scenes, and I was surprised at how much those scenes actually affected me! I was also unaware at the backlash when I went to see it. I did see that a few freaks who saw it early were not all that thrilled with the movie, but I just chalked it up to the general negativity of this board. And the few little things that I heard, like how Rian had delivered something never seen in a SW movie, I was expecting some major major wacky twisty things, but really I don't see that at all in the movie. Yes, it had some unexpected turns, but I didn't think they were that major. Just seemed like good, smart, clever storytelling to me.

But it's nice to see a few people here on the board who enjoyed the movie! :duff

Yep, everything you describe echoes my own experience and seemingly the entire sold out auditorium I attended last Saturday night. :rock Everyone was positively abuzz with excitement afterward in the lobby as entire groups of people were excitedly chatting, taking photos with the posters/cardboard stands, etc. I also sometimes chat on a prolific home theater forum for cinephiles of all kinds that doesn't have these little biased factions of DC fans vs. MCU fans vs. anti-Disney crusaders and the prevailing attitude there has been incredibly positive toward the film. Sure some people are running with the narrative perpetuated by opt-in votes on rottentomatoes but other than here I just don't see where such sentiments are the norm.

I thought it was one of the best WWII movies even made.
The pacing is part of the non-liniar structure and atmosphere, it wouldn't work otherwise.
Then again, maybe one can olny appreciate it with an awesome IMAX sound.

The one I watched ended with Deckard and Rachel leaving his apartment and him picking up that little paper Unicorn - which I presume was the tease that Deckard might be a replicant?

I've heard reference to a narration before but there was none in the one I watched - unless they mean the text at the beginning of the movie...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: 6.75/10

I've detailed my initial opinion in the dedicated thread. But in summary, I think it's pretty well made apart from some issues with awkward humor and pacing. Cinematography and effects were top notch, and acting by many of the principles was as good as we've seen in Star Wars post-Empire. Story is a bit of a problem, though, and some characters like Finn and Chewy feel like dead weight at this point. They get bonus points for their willingness to take risks, even if I wouldn't have made all of the same decisions Rian et al. did.

The Darkest Hour: 8.5/10

Extremely well made in many respects. My main criticism is that it was a bit overly sentimental at times. But this is the movies, not a dry, historical accounting, so what are you gonna do? Oldman, Stannis Baratheon, and Danny Rayburn were all outstanding.

Timecop 1994: 4/10
Pretty sure that's the first R rated film I saw in the theaters. . .I didn't hate it at the time, but it's been quite awhile.

'The final cut' I believe it said. What's the best one?
That's subjective, but the one you saw is the one Scott had pretty much total control over. So, that's his vision, as of the time it was released. . .the question is, is it the vision he also had at the time the film was made? And not sure about that. There is probably some Lucas-like historical revisionism there. Personally, I like that version the best, but wish they would take out the unicorn dream--which Scott didn't film until he did Legend a few years later--uand make that part more ambiguous.

The studio forced Ford to do a narration before the first theatrical release, because they didn't think the audience would understand what was going on. The first theatrical release also had a less ambiguous, "happy" ending. And missing the unicorn dream of course, so not as clear a reason to consider Deckard a replicant.

The only thing thatís keeps the sequel from being better than the original is the Gremlins were actually threatening and scary in the first film....

They were pretty much just a running joke in the second...

I hope for another one....always....where the Gremlins are murderous and frightening...

Back to the Future being another one.

Thanks for the info on Blade Runner by the way.

I've now seen 2049. Pretty good. Although I've never been a big BladeRunner fan it was always a film I wanted to love like others do and I thought it had enough merit to revisit every once in a while to see if my own age and maturity had any bearing.

It's almost hard to believe that one of these highly belated sequels actually hasn't ended up being ***t. I wouldn't really know what to criticize about it. Like the first film it has stunning visuals and music and it broadened the world and the story nicely.

Loved the very end when Vangelis' original theme came in as K lay down (to die presumably?) - definite goosebump scene.

So yeah, a really nice duology here.

edit - I'll add that 2049 is definitely my favourite of the Villeneuve films. I actually just had to google him to see what else he's done that I'd seen

Arrival - nahh, didn't like.
Sicario - ehhhh, it was fine as I recall
Prisoners - I do remember enjoying this one but I'll still go with Bladerunner as Sci-fi is my preferred genre

and I haven't seen any of his others.

I think the idea is he fulfilled his prophecy and that in turn bolstered his beliefs and allowed him to use the Matrix more like Neo.

He does escape the agents in the first film, so that could be the moment Morpheus found a new level of strength.

I just assumed that Neo's skills rubbed off on those who associated with him. Since so much of their abilities are based on belief watching Neo do what he did on a regular basis could have easily increased the "faith" of his teammates in their own abilities.

I actually think some of the island stuff was excessive, either the dino-stampede or the giant bugs part...although I can understand why Jackson would have been reluctant to cut either given the amount of work that would have gone into them.

Pretty much sums up my opinion on him too. Though, back in 2005 he impressed me in this, they just focused too much on him.

If they cut the film into 2 parts, the Island film would be the one too watch. The NYC stuff is fun and visually striking, but for me the Island is soo much fun. Really creepy too. The scene where they first get there and see the natives, that **** is scary.

I'm also a huge 30's-40's nut, I love everything spanning those 20 years. Seeing them pack tommy's onto the island makes my pants shorter. :lol

Well, Jack is always down on his luck, so that wasn't the issue. I just thought he was too incompetent and he lacks intelligence and depth, which he had in the first film...and maybe the second film.

I didn't hate the film, but...yeah, the first two films are still my favorites. I liked the young Sparrow sequence and I kind of wish the whole film was about young Jack, because that sequence was great.

I'd be on board for the idea of a prequel series about the younger Jack, his debt with Davy Jones, etc. I really liked DMTNT and I love PotC but I honestly just don't see where they can take the franchise now without it feeling like a retread.

Avengers Age of Ultron - 7/10

I think that's the best I'd give it. It's fine, it doesn't do anything that makes me say ''I want this movie struck from the canon!!'' but it's also not stellar.

There's some great scenes and sequences but overall it's a bit repetitious of the first one, a lot of the jokes don't land and the pacing is a tad sluggish.

ZaCHw117
01-09-2018, 10:25 AM
I think that's close to my score too. Maybe a tad higher.

It's fun, just too long. Some of the CGI and cinematography is atrocious, (in both avengers movies) and was even when it came out.

karamazov80

It's a shame they didn't get Craig, Mara and Fincher for the international sequel.

Killed my interest in the remakes.
I haven't followed this, but now see they are jumping straight to the 4th book, which was written by a different person after the author of the original 3 books died? Weird. But also good because now I'm caught up with the 3 films made in Sweden!

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest: 7/10

In some ways, I like how the story progresses to this point, and the way everything comes together. But. . .the bow they put on everything is so nice and tidy. It's a bit much, given how dark some of the story is that gets to this point. The story is also a bit slow to unfold in this one at times, with Lisbeth just hanging out in a hospital, jail cell, and court room for about 90% of the movie. It's also a bit weird that they don't seem to care that Lisbeth is accused not only of attempting to murder her father, but the two immigration activists once evidence comes to light that there is a conspiracy and her psychiatrist is a part of it. Just because the latter is true doesn't mean the former isn't. I didn't see any proof brought to court that the conspirators had committed those murders, at least nothing the judge panel (?) had time to process. Yet they let Lisbeth out on her own recognizance. But. . .they probably needed the to get to the resolution of the film at that point.

I know it's a great action movie and one of the best sequels of all time, but while I love the imagery (and am still waiting on a 1/4 T1 Arnold from Hot Toys), I can't emotionally connect to this franchise as much as others. T2 is a marvel to look at, I just don't feel anything beyond basic visual stimulation when watching. It would be an 8 otherwise.

T1 is slightly better in this regard, which leads me to believe my issue with T2 could be due to Furlong's acting or Cameron's tendency to crowd-please. T1 also has the better atmosphere IMO.

The Post 6/10 only because it was a dramatization based on a true story.I can't believe Streep and Hanks are nominated in all these awards shows. This was nothing for them,no stretch just another walk in the freakin' park.Absolutley nothing in either of their acting in this film to rave about at all.As we already know only 33% of the Voters in the awards shows have actually seen any of the films. And that is why so many superior smaller films and films with less known actors don't ever get nominated.Voters just cast votes and go for the well known. It's really a shame but that is Hollywood. Now Bruce Greenwood, his one on one scene with Streep was his best work to date and best dramatic scene in the film.
Someone tell Spielberg he is not Hawks. He must have binge watched all Howard Hawks films before he made this because he completely Over-Dosed on the cross-talk and almost ruined the film.Steven, you can't do it like him he was the Master.

The Most Dangerous Man in America or Daniel Ellsberg,The Pentagon Papers series. Both more interesting than this film.IMO
