The Ghoul (2017)

Imagine if Lost Highway was British, and easier to follow.
Unfortunately, the catch is that it is rather dull (the synopsis is quite misleading), and doesn't have an amazing soundtrack.

As far as creepy mind-bending mysteries go, I'd say 5/10.

Just saw it & really enjoyed it; however, I've never read the book so my previous experience is solely based on the mini-series that my family had when I was a kiddo.

I really like it but they Hollywood kept bleeding through , taking me out of the pure western feel...

D'nofrio stole the show along with Hawk. Should have given their stories more time for less on Washington and Pratt.

I should know better than to put this on, because once I do, I can't turn it off. One of the top two films of the 90s, right after the Big Lebowski.

The Neverending Story - 9,5/10

Every time I watch this film I cry a river, man!
The European aesthetics, the 80's music, Alan Oppenheimer voicin' three awesome puppet characters...
It's a film about one boy who reads the book that knows he reads it. And it's done so well!
The buildup to this scene was awesome and the dialog is just amazing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOPAW7Em8mE

The film's flawed and dated but I just can't help it.
And yes, I know it's only half of the book and blah blah blah...
The ending could be better but other than that it's a great piece of cinema.

In TNS case there's actually a good reason for reboot. The book's about one little brat who went ape **** crazy with power after savin' the world, the second half that was left out of the film is epic and dark. But while I'd love to see that story, with magic n big battles of monsters n ****... I just know they'll SJW'd the story and characters.

It's not even really worth giving an in depth review on. "Attack of the Clones" meets "Room." Hell they should have just put that on the poster and played the whole thing as self-aware satire. Maybe it would play well as a midnight showing at a theater that served alcohol but watching it with just six other people in the auditorium shifting uncomfortably in their seats for 2+ hours was NOT fun.

Captain America: Civil War - 5.5/10

I know this will be an unpopular opinion but whatever. I hadn't watched it since May 2016 and needed to see if it was as I remembered it - it was.

Long, boring, dragged out, and OTT action scenes. Not even the introduction to Holland's Spidey could save this - it added to the messiness IMO. The only great thing about CW was the introduction to Black Panther, as it was well done and the performance from Boseman is solid. Also, most of the returning cast here, save for Sebastian Stan and Elizabeth Olsen, seemed bored.

A few reviews of my own:

The Founder (2016) - 7/10

Definitely not on the level of Birdman or Spotlight. I'm not even sure why the story of Ray Kroc warranted a theatrical release. Keaton plays him very similarly to his character from the RoboCop remake.

San Andreas (2015) - 6.75/10

I was pretty surprised at how exciting and intense this movie was. Cheesy as hell obviously but definitely a fun check your brain at the door disaster movie with possibly the hottest mother/daughter combo in the history of cinema.

The Invitation (2015) - 7.75/10

Saw this about a year and a half ago and it still plays very well on a second viewing.

rushmore223

This ones hard to rate...

It Comes At Night - 8/10

Besides the fact that it shares the same distribution company (A24), this movie has much in common with The VVITCH. Both movies revolve around a family in isolation, surrounded by a menacing Forest, and because of what lurks out there, the family is ripped apart. Paranoia, and a certain steadfastness in ones beliefs, or at least, belief in what must be done is what eventually deal the characters the hardest blows.

This film, while slow, is hard to look away from, despite how much you might want to. It has a certain brutality to it, especially it's ending. It is definitely worth watching though.

I have come to believe that A24 hates kids. :lol

Edit - To be completely honest, I'm still mulling over that rating.

Other than A Ghost Story the best movies to see on the big screen have been re-releases. How old is your daughter? When mine first saw Spirited Away a number of years ago the parents turning into pigs aspect definitely did not sit well with her, lol. At least we've got Rey and the Porgs coming up. :D

She's about to turn 9, we'll be spending her bday in DisneyWorld, funny, since she just tore down all her Princess posters a few days ago.

Sadly, her interest in Star Wars seems to be waning. Disney marketing, work your magic! ;)

She'd rekindle that interest if they de-aged Luke. She said she doesn't like him when he's old.

[B]Mother! - 8.5/10 - Pretty good movie. Was expecting some type of horror, but it was anything but. Bardem was good but Lawrence carried it. First flick in a while where I was actually getting pissed off with the main character. GTFO of my house!

Kudos for being brave enough to actually admit you like this movie versus the lemmings who enjoy bashing this movie. I too thought it was great. You can either agree or disagree with the underlying message but there's no denying it really was a good (and brave) movie. It was nice to see something original than the usual sequels, remakes and superhero movies.

Can't that be said about every TC movie in th last 15 years... I stay away from his movies like the plague

Re TC's Mummy - I thought "How bad could it be? Maybe it'll be a guilty pleasure.....":pow:(

Shame of it is I think TC is talented but why does he always need to be front and center (Yeah, sure, really works for you playing 6'4" Jack Reacher and BTW thanks for ******* the books, Tom....)

Agree with:
http://variety.com/2017/film/columns/tom-cruise-career-meltdown-the-mummy-1202461441/

Tom Cruise could still be a powerful actor, but the irony of his career, at least for now, is that at the very moment when he should be taking on more character roles, easing into a post-superstar creative freedom zone (as actors from Julia Roberts to Kevin Costner to Meryl Streep to Leonardo DiCaprio have done), he’s doubled down on one thing and one thing only: the awesome global transcendence of his image. He’s still choosing movies like he’s king of the world.

I don't think enough people have even seen this movie, for you to consider either group "lemmings".

It's so conceited to simply dismiss other peoples opinion as either being part of a herd mentality, or not possesing the intellectual capacity to understand the film. Maybe you just liked a bad film?

I don't know enough about it to summon an interest in going to the theater to see it, I'll probably catch it on video though. I know the trailer really turned me off of it, as it unrelentingly touted itself as the second coming. In my experience, a movie that constantly tries to hit you over the head with how amazing it is, usually is'nt.

It (2017) - 5/10. The characters were okay. But there were way. Too. Many. Jumpscares. They got tiring, annoying, cheap, and predictable after the first couple times they happened, and I was more focused on guessing when one would happen next than the plot of the film. They were less scary than surprising, too. The only genuinely creepy part, for me, was the location change at the end.

The It remake is pretty much what you make of it. I agree that it's full of clichéd and predictable jump scares as I wasn't wild over the film myself, but I think it's better than most of what we've gotten for horror the past ten years... at least in terms of character development. I'd say it's still worth a look.

Assassin's Creed. Can't really rate it 'coz I got so bored drifted off about 1/3 of the way in. I think the point of the movie was for the whole cast to get turns practicing looking portentous (like rehearsing for other films) 'coz there was a lot of that. (Maybe they were rehearsing for cameos in upcoming comic movies re the fate of the world etc.)

ONLY that, far as I could tell re dialogue. Lots of grim looks and and *mystic* hooded robes.

There was a lot of what looked like imitations of Asian martial arts movies too. Like, no-one even got sweaty or was breathing hard. Anyway, can see why this one tanked at the theaters IMO waste of a good cast. If only a few Wilhelm screams had been thrown in when folks were sailing from those rooftops.

The Taking of Pelham 123 (2007) - Dumpster fire/10

Second viewing since there wasn't anything on and I felt like watching a bad movie, plus Travolta's "acting" and I stress that word... is so incredibly over the top and douche chill inducing that it's captivatingly bad. It makes his performance in Face-Off Oscar worthy.

And I forgot the schlock Tony Scott was directing near the end of his life. The awful camera pans over and over is headache inducing and redundant.

The original Pelham is better obviously. Gritty and dirty NYC, and Robert Shaw is one hundred fold a better actor and is the only reason I go back to it.

It's almost as if it didn't even need to be a "Zombie" movie, could have just been that she was ill with a highly communicable disease. Guess they thought jumping on the zombie bandwagon would garner them a few extra bucks at the box office.

It was entertaining. I think I may have seen in passing criticisms about the dozens of helicopters that seemed to appear out of nowhere from the carrier—and that’s very true! There were clearly 3-4 on the deck, and like 10 plus the huge cargo helicopter come out! :lol

And one pet peeve that I've seen in other movies too: when Kong was in the ankle-deep (for him) water, and a huge squid comes out and he’s wrestling with it—how is that possible with the water so shallow? There is no space for the squid to be hiding under the water there! Same with the giant water buffalo that emerges from the water. Do these mystical creatures have the ability to collapse and become paper thin?

I did like the physics of scale on things like the water. When Kong takes a drink, the water that spills out is like a waterfall. Lots of really nice scale comparison shots too, like the aforementioned water buffalo.

Regardless I didn’t think it was so bad. Interested where the whole “universe” goes from here. Will they all take place in the 70s?

Khev
09-26-2017, 09:32 AM
I think Skull Island was set in the 70's partly as homage to the 1976 version and also so that they could set the stage for "he's still growing" prior to fast forwarding 40 years to when he's big enough to take on Godzilla.

Midnight Meat Train: 6/10

Just interesting enough to keep me watching. And some pretty good acting here and there. But overall, not a very well-made movie in my opinion. The suspense didn't work very well, the drama fell flat, cinematography and lighting weren't all that good, and the violence and Gore seemed kind of cheesy and not particularly effective.

Eagle vs. Shark: 7/10

Quirky indie movie. The first full film that taika waititi made. It seems to have been strongly influenced by Wes Anderson. But despite the derivative nature of some stylistic elements, it was really good. A lot of the story is told in subtle ways without bludgeoning you over the head with it. But at the same time there's this over the top ridiculous quality to it that's funny and can be enjoyed on its own merits. Now that I've seen all his films, I see a lot of recurring themes and I'm curious about whether any of them are picked out for the Thor movie or not. In particular, the death of a loved one, childhood and youthful trauma, and an attempt to reclaim parts of a lost childhood.

A Ghost Story...

...I can't rate this, If ever there was a movie that I needed to see twice to wrap my head around, this is it. Right now it's too fresh and needs to gestate a while.

I will say it is completely original, and if your one of those people who constantly complains about regurgitated plots, endless sequels and reboots, and cliche filled films, you should at least give this movie a try. It won't please everyone, actually, most who watch it probably won't like it or have the patience for it. It has elements of Romance, sci-fi, and drama wrapped in a philosophical sheet, but it doesn't approach those genres in a way you've seen before.

Also, the ending is the type that will beg for answers where answers aren't really important, much like Lost In Translation.

Very little is ever said in this film, but when words are uttered, you better listen up, because they are tantamount to the story, or concept of what is happening.

I really feel like I need to see this again to give it a true rating.

There has been a lot of talk about whether or not this movie is superior to it's predecessor, to that, I say probably not. It is, on the other hand a most worthy sequel, and while not better, it is certainly more expansive. It really adds to the world we are already familiar with, and adds a deeply layered, nuanced, and eye-widening view into that world. I found myself hungry for more, even though the film was approaching 3 hours in length.

I think the Original had a better adversary in Roy Batty, and maybe even Pris, whereas the villains in the sequel were fairly forgettable. Dekkard was also a better "hero", which is not to detract from "K", as its pretty hard to upstage Ford, especially in his prime. There have been a couple of mentions that some think Ford deserves an Oscar for this, I have to say I disagree. He did a fine job, did not detract from the film at all, but his acting was not award-worthy. I see a lot of potential technical awards, and possibly even a nod at the Director.

It was certainly a beautiful film to behold, and the time flew by, but I was left feeling a bit hollow in the end. Maybe I just need to ruminate on it a bit longer, but I felt the original had a far more satisfying and emotional ending.

Blade Runner is my all time favorite science fiction film, so the sequel had the chips stacked against it to begin with, the movie did not disappoint, but it also didn't outdo the original.

I will definitely buy this on 4K when it's released.
