John Wick 2 - 7.5/10. Some great gun play choreography like the first one, but I expected more from some of the characters. Ruby Rose was completely wasted, and Lawrence Fishburne just seemed to be thrown in so people would get a kick out of him and Keanu doing another film together after the Matrix trilogy. I did like seeing a different version of the assassin resources available to Wick in Europe and hope they make more films.

A bit high for me, but I fully agree about the sentiment towards it though. While I'm not as awed by it now, it definitely was an experience the first time.

It's a shame Fox keeps writing the same exact Magneto for every film though at this point. He's been the same character for three films now. It's grown very stale.

I wasn't entirely sure Calvin would survive, figured they would do an Alien and flush it to space.

But I was absolutely sure Jake Gyllenhaal would be the only one to survive when they introduced him and he was the lonesome veteran who didn't like earth and didn't want to come back down. The 2 pod sequence didn't fool me for a second, in fact that was just another flag :lol

Haha, it fooled me up to a point. It only dawned on me when the pod hit the water and they didn't immediately cut to the girl safe and sound inside as would have been expected. I was surprised that Gyllenhaal was still alive though, what was Calvin doing with him if not killing him?

I have no idea, looked like a sort of hive thing from Aliens.

I hated the bad ending for the girl, not because it was bad, but because being lost in space spinning and **** is gut wrenching to imagine for me, Gravity was a hard watch for the same reason, I was cringing the entire time.

In fact, all the deaths and mauling in the movie were more shocking to me than Covenant's deaths, and they're a lot less gory, shock value alone means nothing

The Great Wall - 6.5/10

You really need to shut off your brain for this one. Decent action movie, pretty to look at, but kinda dumb.

Matt Damon schools the Chinese on how to fight, kind of funny considering China is renowned for some of the greatest fighting techniques in the world, but hey, it's Matt Damon, and Matt Damon is very popular in China.

Monsters make no sense, but they are cool to look at.

Siege tactics make no sense, but again, fun to look at.

Very sweet Swedish comedy-drama movie about an old man trying to kill himself! S is for Stanley: 8/10

Really interesting documentary that does two things effectively: 1) provides a great exploration of the main character (Emilio), and his relationship with one of the greatest filmmakers we've ever known; and 2) gives us a glimpse into who Kubrick really was, warts and all. I was surprised at the humanity of Kubrick himself here, though I shouldn't have been--almost everyone has these traits in some fashion or another. But the way he cared for his animals, and the way that Emilio became so essential that Kubrick only started Eyes Wide Shut when he returned, and suspended filming while Emilio did a marathon. That was a really relatable human trait. Sadly, it seems as if Emilio was the only person around that Kubrick trusted, which speaks to what he must have gone through in other areas of his life.

Decent enough I suppose. The battle in the streets of Hong Kong while time was moving backward around them pretty neat and different.

Road House (1989) - 7.5/10

I watched the hell out of this movie in theaters when it came out and then a good number of times on VHS in the early 90's. Still rip roaring fun from beginning to end though it does get a little mean spirited in its final act.

Charming British comedy that's part Bridget Jones and part Better off Dead. Felicity can do no wrong.

Overshadowed by Forrest Gump, Shawshank, and Pulp Fiction when it came out but a solid historical drama by Robert Redford that still holds up today.

Great, but I found it very depressing throughout to see everyone so old and decrepit. It was good to see Mangold get the character right--I felt that he missed the mark on who W is in "The Wolverine". He nailed it this time.

Also surprised to see so many plot points weren't spoiled through advertising, etc.

Wonder Woman: 7/10

It was great! People compare it to Capt America: FA, and yes there are similarities, but WW is TONS better (I never liked TFA). Narratively it was also stronger than the Snyder Supes and Bats movies, with no strange and inexplicable character motivations. It actually felt like a MCU movie in that it told a good story (perhaps a bit familiar) well, with characters you care about.

Some of the effects were a little obvious, I thought, with obvious CGI people, or shoddily composited together.

It had been long enough since I last saw it that I actually forgot a few of the deaths.

The remake was worthwhile to see what they could do with modern effects and a more present-day cruise liner.

It's been called the best DCU movie and I'd have to agree with that. It's one of those movies I could watch over and over again.

Transformers: The Last Knight - 2/10
Transformers movies are getting and worse and this is no doubt, the worst one. Bad choice of actors (except for Anthony Hopkins), bad acting, terrible dialogue, forced humor and 15 minutes into the movie and I was already cringing, by 30 mins I just wanted the movie to finish. I love Transformers but FU Michael Bay.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2 - 7/10
Interesting enough but not a great movie by any means. The first one was better.

Fate of the Furious - 5/10
The beginning race was the best part of the movie. Everything after that is just ridiculous non-sense. I miss when this movie was about racing. We need a Tokyo Drift 2.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter - 8/10
I thought it was going to be crap since all the movies in this series seem to get worse and worse. Pleasantly surprised. A good ending for the franchise.

Power Rangers (2017)

Admittedly, it was actually not half bad! The best part of the film is how much I was invested in the character development.. in a Power Rangers film! A moderately good time for fans and non fans alike, just don't expect much screen time from the titular rangers.

3/5.

I agree, I would only switch scores between Pred and Terminator, as for his acting, I think Arnie's acting in these 3 is legitimately good, unlike Arnie's reputation would suggest, mainly because of the role selection.
You'd argue there was little acting in T2 and T1, and I agree, but in Predator, he gives a genuinely good performance, outside of the accent, there's very convincing facial delivery and body language.

https://youtu.be/4YIVI-BYsRc?t=104

The masterful direction; atmosphere, music and camera work do help a lot though.

But don't get me wrong, the Queen is the **** and it's in the top ten Sci Fi films without question.

I am fine with Xenos being subjected to pulse rifles and stuff....I never saw the aliens as bullet proof, but it's an interesting angle.

The matte painting are showing obviously and the Zeno effects, that once looked so perfect are showing signs of puppetry.

Even the outdoor shot of LV426, which I used to think looked totally real, how a very model like miniature quality to them....

So strange how that happens....I remember also how Gollum looked perfect to my eyes....now he looks way cgi also..

For the time the effects were cutting edge, but it's incredibly dated. The whole Bill Paxton is the "Extreme" thing is so douche chill inducing. The evil Storm Chasers led by Robin Hood, and you're know they're evil because all their trucks are black.

And let's not forget the Finger of Gah scene, where they go through the Fujita scale and it lands on F5 and they're so shook up by it that someone drops their fork.

Yeah, just focused on other things moreso these days. Big into the retro gaming scene, & spend a lot of time researching things to do with the games & systems I'm building libraries / collections for. I've completely shifted on the figures thing. I've sold a bunch of HT figures (still got my Arnolds & SW stuff). Most of the comic book movie figures are gone now with the exception of Jack Joker.

Hoping you're keeping well a-dev. :hi5:

I watched this on HBO which had visible compression especially during the opening scenes, which were pretty dark, not great while trying to get into the movie. I also wasn't keen on that opening interaction between Stiles and Damon, acting felt a bit off.

How'd you feel about the non-Damon Bourne movie? For me that one was a notch above this one.

Thor - 7.5/10

Thor: The Dark World - 6/10

Everyone *****s all over the first Thor movie, but with what the MCU has given us of late, I'd actually put this one in my list of top 5 favorite MCU films. Say what you will about the story/plot, but the Asgard scenes were beautiful and this had the best musical score of any MCU film, IMHO.

The Dark World is a massive step downward, sadly. It felt dragged out and the villain was boring and generic. It's after about the first 50 minutes that the film really sinks. I enjoyed the scenes with Loki though. At first I felt that my 6/10 rating for this was too high, but then I remember some of the cringe-worthy Syfy dribble that I've had the misfortune of enduring and I feel much better about it.

I think the only effect that somewhat takes me out of it is when Palmer's head sticks straight up out of the body and looks around the room. Other than that, I'm immersed the entire time.

I don't know if you guys know, but the famous kennel scene was done by Stan the Man Winston. Rob Bottin was buried in other effects and they asked Stan to help out.

While I didn't hate it like I thought I was going to... it was forgettable. I believe if they didn't flush all the practical effects that were done done, it would of been received much better.
