Beauty And The Beast - B-

It was good on the surface. The actors were all well chosen and brought their A-game. The singing was top notch as well. I never knew how talented of a singer Emma Watson was. And most of the designs were pretty good as well.

But dear god, this film needed to learn the fine art of subtlety. Moments that should have been drawn out for tension, like the Beast's first full reveal, the reveal of the talking decorations, the end transformation, and other certain character building moments were rushed and presented matter-of-factly instead of slowly drawn out for a reveal. What's weird was that the cartoon 30 years ago nailed a lot of these moments, where as this one missed the mark time and time again.

A great example is when Belle's father is fleeing the castle and stops to pick a rose. Was it really necessary to have him literally say "Hey, a rose. I promised Belle id get one for her. I should stop and pick one"? Couldn't it have been enough for him just to see one, hesitate and then decide to go for it?

Another being the first time we see the decorations talk. Instead of slowly hearing voices and seeing the objects from the back, building up to the eventual reveal that its they are actually alive, we go straight to seeing them bounce around and talk from the first time they appear in frame. It totally cuts the surprise out of the moment when Maurice discovers that they are alive.

And of course the very beginning when we get a chance to see the prince before he turns into the Beast was a complete disaster. I cant even tell if they were trying to play it straight or not since it was so hard to take seriously. What makes it tough is that the "French Aristocrat" clothing is already pretty hard to take seriously, and they took it to cartoonish extremes. Prince Adam's exaggerated, clownish, mannerisms didn't help matters.

I also felt that they changed the characters of Belle and The Beast too much. Belle, in what's no doubt an attempt to make her seem stronger and more modern never once seems overwhelmed or frightened by her experience of being kidnapped by the Beast, instead simply resilient and problem solving. I get what they were going for, but it just made the peril of her situation fall flat when we can't see her suffering.

The Beast also suffered from this. In the cartoon when we find him he is barely one step above animal, and is not afraid to go full on rage mode when people anger him. Screaming at Belle when she refuses to eat with him or when she accidentally disturbs the rose. In here he is merely sullen and grumpy. But what's strange is that he stays this way even when falls in love with Belle. The carton shows him being genuinely happy when Belle starts to fall for him, like when he gives her the library, when they play in the snow, or the iconic scene where they dance. In here he remains in a constant state of brooding that never changes.

Also while the musical numbers lifted from the original are more or less done well, they add a bunch of their own songs here, and every single song that they wrote for this falls completely flat and is largely unnecessary. The fact that Disney can't seem to write a decent song for their movies these days makes me very scared for the Mary Poppins sequel

Sometimes you just want to kick back, turn off your brain, and enjoy a good old fashioned, heartwarming crowd pleaser like this. The only thing missing was the laughter and applause track from an episode of Full House!

. . .if I were rating this based on its success at doing what it sets out to, it would be pretty close to a 10. The mood, the technical execution, the subtlety across the board and lack of any easy or even concrete answers. Fantastic. If you want to get an idea of what a run down man who has lost his will completely looks like, don't look to Logan. Look at Affleck here. There was intense emotional impact. Felt like the movie punched me in the gut during one scene in particular. But the movie didn't fully resonate with me. Even with dark films I can often walk away feeling like I was enriched somehow through the experience of watching the film, enhancing my understanding of the human condition or something about myself. But I didn't feel that was the case here.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back: 4/10

A huge disappointment especially after enjoying the first one so much. I read all the bad reviews so I knew it wasn't up to par going in. But I was not prepared for that level of badness. It really felt like no one wanted to be there. The acting was surprisingly bad. Usually Cruise can be counted on to give it his all in any role. Here he and everyone else is barely acting and it looks like they never rehearsed and used the first take of every shot. Not to mention the lame story. The first movie took a pulpy and even fairly pedestrian story, like something out of a tv cop show even, and elevated it with great performances, great tension and pacing. This one sunk the material even lower.

Oh well, so much for the Jack Reacher franchise.

Just watched Sam Raimi's first two Spider-Man films since I haven't watched them in a while. Both are great superhero classics each worth four out of five stars for what they are, IMHO. I'm in the process of watching Spider-Man 3 to get a better idea as to the true differences between it and the previous two (aside from the obvious), and what really makes it bad by comparison.

A Disney Fan review
People are raving about this, but its really not better then the animated one. As much as I like to look at Emma Watson, the auto tune, phaser and other effects they laid on her voice are just so obvious its painful to hear. They should have gotten an unknown who could actually sing the parts....because her acting would have likly been on par with Waston.

The singing for the rest of the cast is lack luster....the CGI is also ......even for a kids film. There were a few nice changes, but for he most part ...very forgettable remake of a film that required no remake.

Note: if you want to a true complete story of B&B i highly recommend the Broadway play. It is outstanding. once you see that, you will really appreciate how unneeded this film is.

Well I finished watching Spider-Man 3 last night, and I'm sorry to say that there are multiple problems with it aside from Venom.

First, the whole film just doesn't have the same feel/charm as the first two. It starts out good and you expect that it will be like the first two, but it isn't. Second, compared to her role in the previous films, Mary Jane's character seems a lot more self-centered. Third, after two films, they expect us to believe that Flint Marco was actually responsible for killing Uncle Ben. It's one of those common "you thought this was true from the beginning but it isn't" stories that often appear in trilogies. I won't even bother talking about Topher Grace's Eddie Brock/Venom because you all know darn well why he wasn't well received.

Spider-Man 3 is one of those movies where when I'm watching it I ask myself "Am I being too hard on it? Is this actually an OK superhero movie?" However, when left to think about it, I can't help but feel that it was a massive waste of potential. 3 out of 5 stars.

GF1

The first 20 minutes alone has more iconic quotes and moments than most films.

However, I love GF2's ending. The flashback and then Michael by himself thinking about the past.

Maybe my favorite ending of all time.

The flashbacks are all great too.

I can see why some might prefer it over the first film.

It wasn't bad, just seemed a little too convenient that Pratt had the expertise needed to accomplish the task at hand, and Fishburne waking when he did, seemed like a bit of a leap.

Really really. You're average! And you even have Mel in your signature. *shakes head disapprovingly*

I'm not usually affected that much by movies that are trying to move me on an emotional level. Logan, Rogue One, and others that have come out recently did nothing for me on that level. But this movie really worked that way. The various supporting characters and arc of Doss were all very well done. Plus, the technical execution was superb. It's pretty dramatically different from Full Metal Jacket in terms of the themes and what you take away from the film, apart from the fact that war is hell of course.

Yeah, I thought he was good, and very believable in that role. Kind of funny that Brits were cast as (at least) three of the major characters in the film in Doss, Worthington's captain, and Doss's father (Hugo Weaving). But Mel has also done American accents in about 95% of his work.

Khev
03-30-2017, 09:27 AM
Yeah I thought Hacksaw Ridge was pretty brilliant.

And what's amazing is that Mel held back on some of Doss' deeds because he didn't want audiences to tune out thinking that they were embellishing too much. Doss kicking away a live grenade actually happened but in reality he suffered 17 shrapnel wounds from the blast, temporarily lost the use of one arm and leg, treated himself for the shock, REFUSED evac by stretcher so that he could rescue even MORE guys and THEN recover his Bible. The dude was an off the charts badass.

When they were rolling the credits and showing some of the interview material that was weaved into the film, that did help to bolster the realism of the film as a whole to my eyes. Particularly when the guy played by Vince Vaughn was tearing up, talking about how wrong he was about the guy he tried to boot out of the army, only to have his life saved by that same guy.

Just... eh. It was formularic, predictable, boring, and the spell effects weren't that great. I don't know how people thought this was the superior magic film of 2016... Farell was good, but considering the ending, well... None of the actor were "bad", it's just that... the film kinda, "dragged on" and was... boring. Yeah, I can't think of any other word. Just... boring.

Really a great film...noticed something this viewing.

The woman welder in the beginning. Sending the package out, sends it to her husband who is cheating on her in Russia....

At the beginning the sign over the house shows 2 names...and the FedEx driver asks for her husband first. We see him later in his cowboy hat, and a robe with a woman in the background asking for him.

At the end , the name has been removed from the sign......no husband in the picture, no ring on her finger...

This was actually a fun/funny movie of Macauley Culkin acting eeeevil and the scary thing is it seemed to come quite naturally for him. :lol Elijah Wood was pretty decent in it so you can see how he got noticed by other filmmakers. I had to lol at the super violent ending with Culkin's mom holding each kid with one hand over the side of the cliff but faced with the choice of having to drop one and grab the other with two hands. Who did she choose???? Dun dun dunnn. Not too hard to figure out. Super silly stuff but it held my interest to the end.

Dropped a half a point there for the slight contradictions that aren't the manga anyway and a point for the fact that it dragged a little, but not as bad as Z, stuff I can read in 5 minutes in the manga takes 3 episodes here.

Still, my favorite part of the whole franchise, I really enjoyed re-watching this after ages, lots of laughs and lots of feels.

I rate movies like this on a sliding scale, comparing it to other kids' movies of its ilk. And by that measure I would say it is slightly better than average. Not Disney-level by any means, but it was charming at times, had some funny moments (particularly with the Gandalf alarm clock which I chuckled at a few times), and some likable characters. Voice acting was good. The visuals during the more explicit fantasy sequences were well done. Also a fair amount of potty humor to keep the little ones entertained. Not something I would watch again unless I had to, but if you have kids, you could do worse.

One very strange thing during my screening was that I noticed at least one teenage couple, and one group of adults who came in to see this one without kids at all. . .hard to even imagine the conversation that leads to that happening.

I grew up on Returns more than 89, but it hasn't aged well with me. I do like it though and love how moody it is with the snow. There's no such thing as too dark for Batman. I've also come to like that suit as much as the original.

Things I don't like about BR is that Gotham feels completely different from BATMAN's and the grim fairy tale villains.
It's a nice film but a bad sequel to BATMAN and the reason why WB went full retard afterwards.

Catwoman - created from magic kittens!!!

And Batman, why bother fighting crime? he lets that one celebration chick fall to her death. Way to go bats, way to GO!

And penguin, uggg, just uggggggggggg.

Movie is awful. Will watch Forever over it every.single.time.

89' is the only one to truly capture Gotham and didn't feel like a set. With Returns, while I like the mood, was so blatantly apparent filmed on a set. Especially the roof sequences. 89' hid it very well, at least the majority of the outdoor scenes IMO.

I'm not a huge Batman Returns fan, but would watch it 50 times before I watched one of the Schumacher films again. They feel like the result of a focus group held at a gay pride festival.

I get that. But they are so colorful and flamboyant. With neon colors, overacting out the wazoo, nipples on the Batsuits and butt close-ups, etc. I think Schumacher just let it all hang out there. This was his "Suckerpunch" :lol

Eh, rewatchin' it last time gave me the expression that she was saved by the awning and got brain damage. Wakin' up while street cats were tryin' to eat her was just one of the reasons for this new personality (she was already a cat lover). Nine lives thing was just a bunch of coincidences.

Coincidences yes. I hated how they implied that crap as being real. Like when she's shot by Walken at the end... please... She died right after that. The ending shot doesn't mean anything. Wasn't even Pfeiffer anyway :lol

As someone that enjoyed the Adam West Batman show, I really enjoy Forever. Silly fun? Sure. Its just like previous interpretations of Batman's history. I like Kilmer as Wayne/Bats, O'Donnell's rebellious Grayson and Robin, Carreys Riddler and love TLJ's over the top Two-Face. Love his conflicting sides showing. Unlike TDK whos Two-Face is a just a angry guy with a burnt face.

Now Batman and Robin......Yea. it's bad. Though I would so buy a Arnold Mister Freeze figure and even Bane.

Very surprised by it. Solid movie all the way through. McAvoy was fantastic. From the first trailers I thought I would be cringing out by it, but wasn't at all.

I'm curious to know where it goes. I kinda feel going further into that universe would tarnish it... but it was definitely built as a sidebar to build a third film.

My wife saw this first, and then watched Unbreakable. She didn't care for it, and I was never a huge fan of it myself... but I always admired the idea of it and how minimalist it was in it's approach of real world superheroes. I think bringing back David Dunn in a darker story, would be great to see.

I guess after Mr. Glass got put away, he lived a normal life after that. I kinda assumed he became a part time vigilante.

Actually, for all its faults; Including being bad movies, even the Thor franchise does a better job than Apocalypse...

Very interesting and engaging story about how McDonald’s became a franchise and was (arguably) stolen from the McDonald brothers who originated the burger place.

Good movie overall, but it was definitely marketed differently than how the movie played out. The commercials make it seem like it takes place in the present and the main character searching for his past. But it’s actually all chronological and the first 45 minutes are of the main character as a little boy.
