Pretty much. This movie is still scarier and has better acting than a lot of the garbage pumped out today. It's been 43 years too. :rock

It's very iconic.

The Professional (Leon)

7/10

Pretty good movie, been years since I watched it. I think a bit overrated though and definitely very awkward at times. Some very cheesy moments in the beginning.

Overrated? I don't know. I always thought it was a good classic film, but nothing more than that.

I love the OST though. Eric Serra, who also did Goldeneye and The Fifth Element.

Star Wars TFA - 6/10

My 3rd viewing and I think this is the first time I've actually given it a score. Post-Rogue One my enjoyment of this film has definitely dropped. When it came out I was happy just to get a Star Wars film that didn't look like a cartoon and which had acting that was a step above lifeless. I forgave a lot of things that other people were pointing out but unfortunately those things now bug me too - namely the repetition of what we saw before. Rebels, Empire, Death Star (twice already, this essentially being the third), a reclusive Jedi who just packed in and gave up. It just feels like everything that happened in the OT was totally in vain, the victory in ROTJ squandered and undone without explanation. And with Han Solo being killed off in the midst of it all I feel like Marty McFly in the alternate reality 1985 of Back to the Future II

White Christmas is amazing for those song and dance number when you realize almost all of it was done in one take. Nothing in film can compare to that these days , special effects or otherwise. But you have to have a love for dance numbers for that to start. I love Broadway shows and plays for the same reason.

I normally like watching dancing. What I don't like about that movie is the ridiculously skinny actress. She freaks me out with her 8 inch waste and stick legs. I should've mentioned that before lol.

SW: TFA 6/10 (2nd Viewing exactly one year later)

Good cinematography, better writting than the prequels, it was nice to see the old characters, and Finn, Poe, Kylo and even Hux were great, but... Rey is the biggest Mary Sue I've ever seen. She's a mix between Kate Bishop, America Chavez and Riri Williams if we're talking in comic terms. She's so bland and "perfect", that she ruins the whole movie. I could get over the ANH rehash, but she's just... bad...

Eh, I see that thrown around a lot, and it's really not the same. Luke was trained by Obi-Wan and was still pretty sucky. Remember the training scene in the Falcon with the Marksman Remote? In Empire, he got his ass kicked by Vader and lost his hand. Even with the training by Yoda. Heck, even Anakin got his butt handed to him by Dooku in AOTC, and he had been training for a decade or so. Meanwhile, Rey, with no training whatsoever, performed a mind trick on a Stormtrooper, so not just an average joe, resisted Kylo's mind read and read his mind, and then proceeded to kick his ass. The guy who had been training since a youngling, under both Luke and Snoke.

Not to mention she was an expert on flying and repairing the Falcon, a pretty old ship itself. Not to mention the cray maneuvers in the chase scene. How does a scavenger get so good at flying ships, especially something as big as the Falcon, and as good an engineer? Luke and Anakin spent all their time with electronics, and they couldn't even hope to compete with that.

Anakin was a Gary Stu as well, but Rey is just an OP Mary Sue. Every protagonist is at some point an Over-Powered person who wins by Plot Convenience, but they took it too far with Rey. She gets the Falcon for some reason (here you go random person we've know for a day or so, you get to sit in my lifelong friend's seat), she gets hugged by Leia (screw you Chewie, this gal jus like, lost the guy she knew for a hours), she gets to be an extremely powerful Force user even without training, it's too much and too fast.

I know I'm saying the same things others said a while back, but I just rewatched it, and just not noticed all the problems. I gave the flick a 9 or so last year, but yeah, it doesn't hold up.

Ok, I'll buy this.....

The novel actually addressed much of this, and I felt it was a mistake to skip these parts in the film.

In the novel Rey is said to be a great pilot, and has flown many ship, just not out side the atmosphere. There is actually a chse with other juunk scavngers through a junk yard, which I really would have liked to see, where Rey used the force unknowingly.

I think Leia knows Rey........and somehow that part with be a big reveal somewhere. If not, then your right, I felt that was odd. Her and Chewie just ignoring each other was just plain wrong.

I believe alot of the reason Rey can do what sh can do, will be revealed later in the series.....I have a feeling its going to be akin to Anakin's born abilities....which will hearken back to the prequels a bit too much for most folks.

I saw Rogue One a second time Last week and I'd give it a 6.5/10.

I didn't think it was boring but none of the main characters really drew me in. I don't think they developed them enough to really care about them. Definitely a different type of SW film for me. The space scenes were great but overall I didn't enjoy it as much as Episodes 4-7.

I'm ready for 8 for sure. As a stand alone backstory to 4 I thought Rogue did the job. Loved seeing Vader. Loved seeing Tarkin. Loved seeing the Death Star pre ANH. I would have liked more of a continuation to the Erso/Krennic story from Catalyst and a bit more about the Death Star construction and kyber crystal usage in the weapon but I understand they had to focus on the Rogue One group and the retrieval of the plans.

I could get over the ANH rehash, but she's just... bad...
That's interesting, because I thought Finn was awful - like he was a British guy channelling Shia LeBouf for two hours. :monkey4

Ok, I'll buy this.....

The novel actually addressed much of this, and I felt it was a mistake to skip these parts in the film.

I don't have a problem with the feats themselves, what I have a problem with is that they happened far too fast and they all got sorta "lumped together". She impresses Han so much, he offers her a job. She gets to co-pilot the Falcon alongside Chewie. She gets hugged by Leia. She gets the Skywalker saber. She defeats the bad-guy. It's basically a 2.5 hour Rey glorification flick. Back in the OT, and in the PT, everybody had something to do. Now, you can take out most characters, and the flick will be more or less the same, because every vital moment of the film depended on Rey.

It was just a bad choice to make her so OP this early. Like I said, Anakin was a Gary Stu at points as well, but even he lost and got his ass handed to him, even if he was a trained Jedi. And then you have this untrained gal being able to defeat a person who's trained under Luke and Snoke, in both Sides of the Force. It's just too much. Add to that the adoration of everyone and it reads like bad fan-fic.

That's interesting, because I thought Finn was awful - like he was a British guy channelling Shia LeBouf for two hours. :monkey4

Eh, he was the "fish out of water", average joe type of guy, and that made him the underdog you rooted for. He wasn't the suave pilot that Poe was , or the brilliant engineer/Force sensitive protagonist, he was just... there.

:lol Perfect gif! It occurred to me while watching Aliens last night that a movie like Rogue One would maybe be a 5/10 in comparison, at least IMO. There were no cartoons, the sets and practical effects were amazing, but the big difference was in character devolvement. I truly cared about each character in Aliens and it made the movie emotionally involving. The only times I felt any emotional connection to the characters in RO was when K-2SO "died" and the very end scene deaths of Jyn and Cassian. The suspense in Aliens was also just awesome and always present. I don't think a real feeling of suspense was possible in RO because we all knew that they were going to get the Death Star plans, one way or another, in the end.

It's due to having more fleshed out villains, at least by 80s standards. Not to mention being ballsy and killing off the love interest.

Wow, yeah. I guess everybody was right! It was just a mess in storytelling. They gave you all those little snippets of background to most of the characters, but none of them really helped to flesh out their personalities or motivations. For the record, I love most of the Marvel movies, and I’m one of the few that actually liked Bats V Supes.

Very sweet natured movie with great performances. Very touching, especially seeing scenes that show real compassion and love. Also very funny!

Glad to see that it passed the "ROTJ test" for you too Lu. :yess: It definitely is less "fun" than most other SW films which can be either good or bad depending on how you think SW should be. I can't necessarily fault it for being less fun. I appreciate the more serious tone and the weighty-ness of the whole story. A big part of me likes that it takes everything seriously and that there weren't a barrage of infantile jokes or goofy humor. So I'm conflicted about missing the fun. I think once I see it again I'll probably be more at peace with it. I'm going through the RO spoilers thread now which is about 200 pages worth of posts for just about a week!

And not that I hate ROTJ or anything! :lol But I can't look past the obvious flaws in Jedi, most of which ironically are all because of the humor and kiddie nature of the movie!

There's no denying the animation was phenomenal. I kept thinking, "this is supposed to be stop-motion, isn't it? This isn't CGI?!?!" Even the lighting was beautiful. The story was good, but I really had a little bit of a hard time staying interested. I was actually ready to give up on it in the beginning before he was found, which was a good 20-30 minutes in. Then I feel like the end climax and resolution was really rushed. Some very touching moments and I really cared about the characters.

What's painful about this one is that there is a really amazing movie under here somewhere. It could have been a great story using a sci-fi backdrop to explore the concept of isolation and the desperation it eventually leads to. Instead typical Hollywood lazy storytelling prevailed and ruined what could have been some really powerful and touching moments. Especially in the final scene.

Had some really good moments. And I appreciate the ballsy ending. But a lot of it still felt flat and by the numbers. And shoehorning in as many old school Star Wars characters and references as possible felt pretty cheesy and unnecessary at a certain point. Though obviously, that is now Disney's MO with these films being so nostalgia driven.

There are others that have mentioned some of the original characters shown felt forced but for some reason I never got that vibe. Which ones did you feel were cheesy? 1. Nice beginning to show flashy bio's on each character that disappear so fast you cannot possible read them.
2. Harley's ass is in this movie more than the Joker is. SOOO many ass shots...
3. Which is probably a good thing, Lets FAILED, tried to hard and ended up with an annoying Joker, who is not menacing or worthy of remembering. ow did he get 2nd billing??
4. Tried to hard to make Will Smith likable as a mas murderer. He should have just been a bad guy...period.
5. Totally stupid CGI bad guy.
6. Sound track was awful.....such random music.....totally disconnected from each other.
7. Not one villain was really done well. El Diablo was closest to acceptable.
8. Harley constantly rambling on about how she is "bad".
9. Flag (Kinneman) looked emaciated.....scary distracting thin.
10. Serious studio meddling is pretty apparent , the bad editing can be seen especially about 1/2 way through.

For the record I really like most of Snyders films, Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead remake, Suckerpunch ( and even think MOS is OK)...I liked all of those. BvS was crap.

Why Him? - 4/10

Il admit there is some personal bias in this one. While I definitely have conservative sensibilities, I'm no prude. I enjoy a good raunchy comedy every now and then if its all in good fun. But there is something about seeing some guy show zero respect for his perspective fiancé's parents or the clearly conservative morals that they hold (their teenage son isn't even allowed to swear or watch rated R movies) and tried to pass along to their daughter that just hit a nerve for me.
It would have been fine if they had poked more fun at the millennial BS of it all. But instead most of the comedy comes from her father raising legitimate concerns over this man's alarmingly amoral behavior and the effect it is having on his daughter, and for it he is portrayed as over the top and controlling; with the boyfriend never once corrected for his actions or worldview. But all of his past actions become irrelevant in the end because he demonstrates some very basic human decency.

It wasn't even all that funny.

Imagine "Meet the Parents", only with Ben Stiller purposely doing all of the things that accidentally happened around him.

And how did you give this a 5/10?

I personally can't see this movie being more than a 3/10

Well, for me, 5/10 is a typical Hollywood film. You need to work really hard to get a 3/10. 2/10 is barely watchable nonsense. (Sharnado). If that was not so funny to behold it would be lower.

I cant think off the top of my head of a 1/10. Maybe some SyFy or Lifetime films.

It was at least filmed well, with some decent acting , and you could see a decent story under all the production and interfearance.

If I make it to the end of a movie it almost is always guaranteed a 4/10

This is basically torture porn in the wild.

Very well shot.
Incredible scenery and acting.
(Tom Hardy is amazing)

There are others that have mentioned some of the original characters shown felt forced but for some reason I never got that vibe. Which ones did you feel were cheesy? About the only ones I can think of that were a stretch were the two Jyn bumped into that caused trouble in the ANH cantina but maybe I missed some others.
That was the biggest one. Of all the people to run into! Also, r2 and 3po's cameo, the blue milk getting a closeup, another, different squid dude commanding the fleet, the heroes knocking out troops and take their uniforms during an inspection. It became really distracting to me. I have to say, though, that the x wing battle was a throwback I actually liked because it was so well done. But it was another, obvious nostalgia driven moment. As was the wise cracking Droid, though I also liked him.

Rogue One - fun film. Loved the droid..hands down my favorite character. He was like C3PO meets Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. The ending scene was awesome...without that I don't think the film is very memorable though.

8 / 10

Passengers - entertaining and carried by Chris Pratt. I thought he and JLaw actually had nice chemistry though. I wish it did some things differently but I did enjoy the 2 hours.

7.5 / 10

Risen - I don't consider myself particularly religious (I play too much Devils advicate) but this movie moved me as many of these kinds of films do. They make me want to buy in 100%. I just love the history and mythology of it...and I came away really impressed by this movie.

Breaking Bad Marathon. 10/10. Not my favorite series ever made ... but close. Certainly top 5. AMC aired the series from beginning to end after Christmas. Not only is it a great series -- but I didn't have to change the channel for four days. That's a lot of freed-up decision-making power. Heh.

Somebody ought to buy a cable channel and just call it BingeTV ... then buy-up old series that don't get aired anymore, and air them top-to-bottom like that.

Sully: 7/10
Very well made and emotional. I got caught up in seeing so many (the ferry boats, police, etc.) come together to help the passengers. It made me tear up several times. They kinda showed the landing a few times and expanded on it in every succeeding time, so it’s like they really wanted to give the audience the most of that crash!

What did bother me was how inane and stupid the National Transportation Safety Board was being towards Sully and the accident. During the trials they showed simulations showing that a safe landing back in LaGuardia (or a nearby NJ airport) was possible and that landing on the water was unnecessary and reckless. But it was so obvious that the simulations weren’t giving time to having those pilots have to contact the tower on their situation, ask for assistance, ask for nearby airports to clear runways, wait to hear back from them, etc. These things amounted to seconds but in that situation every second is obviously crucial. Finally the board conceded in giving them a 35 second pause to allow for that kind of exchange, which then resulted in the simulation pilots not being able to execute a landing at an airport. DUH!

So that was all very frustrating and annoying to watch, how that board could be so boneheaded.

Pretty much where I'm at, after thinking about it for a bit I stand at 6/10.

It's an ok movie, nothing new here, serviceable acting, some iffy characterization, but good pace and atmosphere.

I don't know if by expecting a crime thriller like you did, it would've been a better experience, I don't remember seeing any trailers or reading anything about it, I think I picked it up from a horror recommendation thread and put it directly on my backlog without doing any research, that's why I automatically expected a horror movie, and it developed exactly how I expected.

Yep. Someone on the board spilled the beans for me too. It was the day of the official release for Pete's sake! And not in the R1 movie thread either which I was avoiding since the movie had been previewed for days at that point. UGH. At least you know when the movie takes place in the saga.
But if you don't understand why the team on Scarif were all written in the script to die, then I can't help you.
Again, I say it was pretty obvious that they would all die because you never hear of them or see them ever again in any of the sequels. The fact that Episode IV takes place almost immediately after Rogue One is further proof.

Did you also watch the movie Titanic thinking perhaps there was a chance it would not sink?

The Crown (Netflix Series) 10/10

Fantastic show. Thoroughly interesting and enjoyable. Incredibly well acted, written and produced. I’m looking forward to many more seasons. I just hope they can continue at this superior level.

I Robot.
5/10

I always enjoyed this a a pure "pop corn" flick. Even though they butchered the source material and there are like ten commercials in the first 10 minutes....

But Man did it age poorly. The cgi is almost as bad as the story now.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children: 7/10

I enjoyed it! I thought it was pretty good! I did think the lead guy was actually pretty terrible, but the movie worked despite of him. I was also confused as all hell with the end and the timeloops and “when” they actually existed.

But otherwise I found it very entertaining.

MIDNIGHT RUN. Deniro is bad ass in this oldschool cop /bounty hunter movie. I forgot actor John Ashton a.k.a Tagert from beverlly hills cop actor was in this as another cool bounty hunter. He Ashton shine's hi in this one with Deniro. A pure 10 for a almost 30 yr old movie.

Why him ?

James Franco Brian Cranston in this messed up quick comedy not bad give a 5. A few scarring bits lol worth a watch.
