Batman: The Killing Joke

A solid and fairly faithful adaptation of the book with superb acting and an all too short run time. A few pacing issues aside, this is one of the better Batman films there is.

Hush (2015) - 5.5/10

The Unborn (2009) - 4/10

Hush kept my interest from beginning to end and had a couple moments where I thought "that's kind of different and neat" but otherwise wasn't much to write home about. The Unborn actually had a cool backstory for the ghost but the movie itself was so damn by-the-numbers and contrived that I ended up feeling like the entire experience was a waste of time.

No one will like this BUT.

I thought its the worse of the new films......but still better than 80% of whats done today.

Some non-spoiler comments:

The GOOD:
Its a beautiful movie. Lots of color and detail , which adds depth to the universe.
The acting is decent, but not as good as I had hoped. The best performance comes from our newest characters.
The story is good, yet predictable.
Its Star Trek.....
Great Score as usual.
Some touching tributes....

The BAD:

I do not like LIN as a director. It seemed like he was spinning the camera the whole time. I get he is trying to give the feeling of being in space, but mostly it was nausea inducing...and WAY over played. You think Abraham "lens flares" were gratuitous......try finding a stable shot in this film....

Way to many over the top action shots, that are also poorly shot. The fights and gun play is shot so fast and zoomed you really can't see whats going on at all....lots of flash and boom....but really whats the point if you just see flash and boom.

I didn't feel they added anything to the original characters at all......they basically wanna quit SF and move on......and then don't, cause I got in an exciting battle. The relationships in between the characters didn't progress at all.

THE UGLY

The totally stupid and unneeded motorcycle scene and rescue.
Beastie Boys saves the day.....Cute throwback, but the more I think on it ......CRINGE.
A few main actors just FLAT acting.
Spock Laughing...(not sure about that)
More cast interaction , less boom boom , blast blast. In short it felt more like a summer action block buster than a star trek film.

Batman Vs Superman - 5/10

It's very apparent the people running the DC movie universe just do not understand the Superman character. If I had to pick a highlight I'd go with Wonder Woman, but this movie was just too bloated and bleak.

Batman Vs Superman Ultimate Edition - 7/10

I still stand by my dislike of this interpretation of Superman. It's amazing that adding to a movie that I thought was too long made it better for me. Being able to flesh out a few things helped quite a bit, though they still stuffed in about 3 movies worth of stuff.

Yeah the only downside to the UE is that when I started up the movie I was bummed knowing I was still two and a half hours away from sweet Batman and Wonder Woman action sequences. :lol

And it's such a disappointment to not have the IMAX aspect ratio on the blu-rays. It was annoying watching the Knightmare sequence knowing that there were tons of para-demons flying over Batman's head that I could no longer see. Also the ears of his armored cowl were cut off in almost every shot during his duel with Superman which totally changes the look of his suit. After purchasing my first laser-disc player over 20 years ago I never thought I'd live to see another day of cropped movie images at home.

Yeah, I really appreciated the Wonder Woman decade by decade retrospective. I learned more about her character in that one puff piece than I had in my entire life prior to that. And Suicide Squad can't come fast enough. Man I hope it doesn't suck. But if it does, eh, I'll probably enjoy it. :lol

Stranger Things - 7/10

Very good, love paranormal stuff (especially kids with TK), government conspiracies, sci-fi, and this utilizes all of it with complete comprehension, not to mention the characters are likable, the story is engaging, and the writing is very good.

There was only one time the story falls into horror movie cliché territory, one time, in 8 episodes, and it's not even that bad, that's very impressive.

I was also very impressed by how easily they explained parallel realities.

Can't wait for season 2.

If there was something close to a perfect way to do an Akira adaptation, Netflix is it.

Ghost gurls - 1/10 It's even worse than I thought, the hate is real.

Nearly gave up at several times, sigh, so stupid, it's just a bad SNL skit, not even a chuckle... some FX are cool I guess, characters are caricatures, jokes are "please laugh", I would totally give the stink eye to anyone who laughs at any of this, that Haltzman chick is "lmao I'm so corky and randumb" (and I was probably the only one who liked her when the trailers came out), I can't stress enough how soul crushingly dumb the dialogue and script are.

I was totally defeated by the end, didn't even care about them hitting the ghost you know where.

Jodorowsky's Dune: 5.5/10

Very interesting documentary about Alejandro Jodorowsky's attempt to get Dune made in 1975. I have to say that I'm kinda glad it didn't get made back then because I think it would have been way too weird and psychedelic and over the top. It would have looked like a cross between 1980 Flash Gordon and Barbarella, but with some majorly effed up stuff in there. But I have to commend him for assembling an amazing team (Moebius, HR Giger, Dan O'Bannon) that went on to create other masterpieces (including Alien, Flash Gordon and MOTU) whose origins can be found in that Dune treatment. They created an amazing hard bound book of the entire movie storyboarded (by Moebius) plus paintings of sets, costume designs, etc. that they distributed to all the major Hollywood studios. They should totally have that printed for consumers.

BTW, I'm a huge fan of Lynch's Dune. Jodorowsky said he was heartbroken when that got made, especially by Lynch who he considered a true artist, and he was literally dragged to go see it. But he said as the movie played on, he got happier and happier and happier because he thought the movie was terrible! :lol

The things that really bothered me was the old absence of the cast not being involved but are in it. Helmsworth was kinda funny but no doubt this will go to dvd fast to recoup sales of this Trainwreck of a movie. I can not stand Mellissa Mcarthy she's the same loud mouth annoying in everything. She needs to stop ruining every damn movie. Pissed me off she shows up in Central intelligence movie end for no damn reason.

Oh really? There was one? They're making a Rocketeer reboot with a girl? That doesn't sound bad at all actually, the movie was not very good so there's lots of room for improvement.

As long as they keep it art deco and not modern and overdesigned.

Is that the first time you'd seen it? It was really a film for a particular era, and made a lot more sense seeing it in the 90s.

Having said that, when I saw it I thought it was interesting, different... had some good moments - but I didn't feel it was the brilliant treatise many were saying it was.

Yeah it was, that's what I figured, it's boxed in this 90's trend of social critique, I think American Psycho or even Fight Club do a better job at it. I'm sure it was a lot fresher in the 90's.

I thought it was a movie about a good man screwed over by society on a righteous spree of self-rationalized justice, sort of a proto-Breaking Bad or something, but nope, it was just an autistic man-child throwing a big tantrum because **** happens to him, which looks like it's mostly his fault.

But it's not as bad as God Bless America.

I have liked Stephen Chow movies in the past, Kung Fu Hustle coming to mind, but this was awful. I'll give it a pass on the horrendous FX, and use of stock footage, but I think I laughed twice during the whole movie. Towards the end the movie combined horrific acts of violence with comedy, which I just found disturbing. The success this has had in China makes this all the more disturbing to me.

I gave it a 1.5 for the 2 laughs and for some eye candy.

Two groups of people should be ashamed of themselves. The critics who gave the movie just enough of a good score so that it would be certified fresh, and the YouTube reviewers who overreacted like this was the worst POS they'd ever laid eyes on. It's dumb and I barely laughed, but it's not any worse than the first GI Joe movie with Tatum. Yes, the men in this movie are completely useless but honestly it's so dumb that you don't notice. Wiig and Jones were tolerable and funny occasionally. The other two, ugh. I like McKinnon on SNL so I'm not sure what the hell happened other than a weak director didn't have the balls to actually direct her. Cameos were forgettable to awful(Murray's and Slimer's).

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: 6.5/10

Surprisingly good! I think it would have worked very well as a straight re-telling of P&P. The filmmakers took good care of treating that aspect of the story with respect. The zombie stuff was interesting, a very interesting backstory as to how it all began and how the British had learned to deal with zombies for decades (but much of that was quickly zipped over). It also had a different take on zombies, making them retain their humanity (and are able to talk and reason) as long as they don't eat human brains--it's only then that they go crazy and attack other humans. They're also the quick running zombies. Not too gory at all--I believe it was PG13.

Nice, light little movie directed by Captain America himself: Chris Evans! About a woman (Alice Eve) who is stranded in Manhattan after getting her purse stolen and a busker (Evans) who helps her out. Takes place during the course of the night and they get to know each other. Good script, good performances and an overall good job by Evans. Ending is left ambiguous.

Well, it was a big hit in China, so tastes in humor are obviously radically different there. My Wife was originally from Hong Kong, but has lived in the U.S. for over 20 years, she laughed a little more than me at the movie, but she didnt think it was too good. Most Asians don't get a lot of western humor, I remember showing Monty Python and the Holy Grail to her and a friend of hers, they hated it, she often looked over at me as I laughed at the film and several times asked if I could explain what was funny about it. That was about 15 years ago, would be a good experiment to see if her reaction to the film has changed, I bet it has.

You can find a lot of gems in anime, more likely if you dive into pre 2000 movies.

Very astute film in its observations on relationships and the way society (and those involved) views them, and views those that stay single.

I was still able to enjoy the movie despite it not having aged well. Two things that really stood out to me as I was watching it. The first was the part of the film that takes place on the farm. That came straight from the comics(like most of the movie) and most studios today would never have kept those scenes in their big blockbuster franchise films. The second thing; kids smoking in a PG movie!! I completely forgot about that scene so it was a little shocking to see considering the MPAA's rules depicting smoking in movies. :lol

I love the film. It's got a light heartened things in it but it's still a pretty dark film for kids. It was filmed in the perfect time too since it was still partly scary NYC.

Great dialogue and great acting. But I couldn't help but think it felt limited about how much of his life it covered even though it covered about 15 years. The focus felt too narrow (it was basically about his relationship to his daughter Lisa) and it left you feeling like there was much more of his story to tell.

Tusk: 6/10

Very impressed again by a Kevin Smith movie. I was equally impressed by his Red State, but I was almost afraid of watching this one since it got such divisive/bad reviews. But it turned out not to be nearly as odd or disturbing or ludicrous as I was led to believe. Michael Parks really sells the part and the movie works mostly because of his talent. Justin Long was quite good too. I think Smith is definitely getting better and better. His dialogue feels much more natural. Either that or he's getting better actors to recite his dialogue properly. And the actual directing and cinematography was quite good--very polished and professional. The Walrus suit was pretty crappy, but eh, I went with it.

Yeah, you can see glimpses of that potential. It's really just a Will Smith film with him playing a good guy, shooting cgi stuff to make his daughter proud. There is no DCEU.

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace - 6.5/10
Total Recall, the old one - 6/10

Both movies are the same, amazing production values and interesting concepts and themes, hindered by bad performances, lazy scripts and bad direction, but it's even more jarring in Total Recall because TR is more sci-fi as opposed to TPM which is just fantasy, and even so, TPM does a much better job exploring the concepts it presents.

But ultimately lots of heart and personality on both movies, that make the cheesiness tons of fun instead of eye rolling.

Both movies have little to do with each other, I just watched them almost back to back so it lent itself for a comparison.

As for Total Recall, I just found out it's based on a novel, maybe the story is better delivered there so I'm gonna check it out, see if I can find out a little more about those aliens.

Phillip K. ****'s stories have resulted in a lot of great movies, unfortunately nobody has really done "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale" justice. That being said, Arnies was far more entertaining than Colin Farrell's.

I would put them sort of on equal level. I even think I gave TFA the same score IIRC.

TFA is better made, better directed, better scripted, but lacks personality, originality and heart, it doesn't feel like Star Wars anymore to me, it feels like fan fiction of Star Wars.

While TPM is incompetently made in some important aspects like script and direction, it has a ton of heart and personality, it's also original and it feels completely Star Wars.

I honestly think all that stuff about the republic and the taxation of trade routes and everything was interesting, and could've been better exploited, I feel if TPM had a better script and was better directed, it could be right up there with the OT, which could be said for the entirety of the PT :lol while I don't feel TFA has anything to contribute to the lore, it even feels like a total waste to throw away all that fantastic EU stuff just for TFA.

At least Zahn is bringing back Thrawn.

Not being able to tell what the hell is going on is OK for the first fight maybe - to demonstrate Batman's stealth and why he might be scary to criminals but when all the fights are like that it starts to look like a cover for just not being able to shoot good action.

The 1990 Turtles movie did this. It opens with a fight scene where you literally can't see anything so as to convey the speed and efficiency of the Turtles. But they kinda do make up for it later. Nolan doesn't really.

Again, at times too hard to tell what the **** is happening in action scenes and it's a little bit too long. And to this day I just can't bring myself to like the TDK batsuit, looks silly to me.
Agreed.

Solid movie, but a good quarter of it needs to be edited out.

Terrible costume.

Blurry fight scenes do get anoying too.

I have a harder time putting up with horrible dialogue, I can sometimes look past bad cgi.

Horrible dialogue aside...I can't look past CGI, good or bad. It's a mockery to what the original Star Wars trilogy was, and to all those involved in making it. A green screen full of cartoons will never compare to the countless hours of work put into models and miniatures used to film the original.

The Purge: Election Year - 71/100. Good concept but it's on its last legs.

Won't argue with that.

The Dark Knight Rises - 7/10

Can't recall what I would have rated it last time I watched it but I think lower than this?

For some reason I enjoyed it more this time, maybe the 4th or 5th viewing - possibly due to how disappointed I've been with the new DCEU.

My most abiding criticisms are.....again...weak underwhelming action, the silly TDK suit and Bale's Batvoice which had become its own parody by this point.

What were your favorite parts of the film after revisiting it again?

Well, I really liked Hardy as Bane. I know, midget Bane, but they managed to make him look big most of the time - low angles and probably casting shorter actors as his henchmen :lol I loved his voice and his dialogue. I think he owned almost every scene he was in, very much earning his ''Boss'' walk - particularly love when he sees Batman and Catwoman escaping in the Bat and Zimmer's music is pretty damn good there.

Anne Hathaway did a pretty good catwoman and I very much enjoyed a few shots in particular of her ''Feline'' walk. :naughty

Michael Caine put in a great performance as Alfred. I know people found his crying annoying and his stance on Bruce returning as Batman to be confusing given his support and encouragement of it in the previous films however I think his change of heart was plausible in context. Given how long he'd been out and how frail he'd become Alfred just didn't want Bruce to risk it anymore, he thought Bruce might get killed this time, he had a bad feeling about it. He couldn't stop him from going back out as Batman, but he couldn't stay and watch either so he left.

I liked the Gordon/Batman scenes. Oldman was great as always. The early scene with Bruce visiting Gordon in hospital as a ''civvies'' Batman was interesting. Anyone else would be hyper curious to find out who the hell Batman was if he would just remove the balaclava but Gordon really didn't care or want to know. At least not until the very end when it appears that Batman will likely die and he finally asks him. I think the film provided a decent closure to their relationship and alliance. Yeah it makes little sense that Blake would guess who Batman was and Gordon never did but **** it.

The first fight with Bane was very dramatically impactful - seeing Batman get his ass kicked, wow - for some reason I really like the shot when Bane knocks him over the railing to the floor below with his cape fanning out. Again Bane's dialogue throughout is fantastically quotable. The second fight however doesn't live up to it and that's a real shame because we were badly in need of catharsis. It starts off bad ''no, I came back to stop you''...Holy weak verbal comeback Batman! And then the fighting itself, annoyingly edited between other scenes, visibly non-connecting punches and elbows and Batman seemingly having no new strategy. He does what really should have happened if even by accident in the first fight - dislodges the wires in Bane's mask and then a mere 3 or 4 blows later Bane is out of it and Bale's Batvoice reaches the pinnacle of it's unintentional, lisping hilarity. Even this victory is immediately undermined as Talia reveals her true nature and Batman is again at Bane's mercy...dead if not for Catwoman saving his ass. But anyway you asked what my favourite parts were - the first fight was definitely a highlight, particularly by comparison with the second.

Great soundtrack - I hadn't listened to these scores in a long time because I've kinda gotten tired of Zimmer's name on everything - but they were perfect for these films. His Batman theme destroys whatever that was for Batfleck in BvS.

You didn't like Batman's comeback/intro for the first time in many years? I thought it was a cool "return," especially with the older cop telling the rookie cop he's about to watch something "cool." Love the shot of all the cops chasing Bats and the escape with the Zimmer music.

Not A-D but........When Batman talks to himself in the Batman voice. :lol

Love the opening plane sequence.

I've always liked the dialogue that Bane rattles off to Bats in their first encounter.

I like when Bruce finally scales the wall of the prison. And also drops the ropes for the others.

The brawl when the freed cops engage with Banes army.

When Bats blasts the top of the building while carrying the bomb and the kids on the bus start cheering.

The ending montage.

And love love love soundtrack more than the other two flicks.

Srsly hate that they just didn't call Blake 'D!ck Grayson'. It would have been fine and more fitting for him to carry on as Batman.
Don't like out of shape Bats getting beat down by Bane.

The Snowman (1982)

Why oh why did I decided to re-watch this emotionally crushing movie today is a mistake I'll regret for a while. A film that gently lifts you up to the sky, suffocates you and slams you right back into the ground.

Oh, and David Bowie's in it! :rock
