Pretentious is a great word to associate with BatSoup. :lecture

I don't think there's a better name :lol

To be fair, I think the Extended Cut is better than the theatrical cut, but a wise man used to say, you can't polish a turd.

Out of sheer curiosity I'd kinda like to see the T1 eye-removal scene done with modern effects.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Extended Cut.

A "deconstruction" of the superhero genre that falls flat on its' face with a ridiculous tone, poor characterizations, half-baked themes and execution. Pretentious, overbearing and patronizing. Let the record show that you go watch the Justice League cartoons instead.

2/5.

Agreed.

If Cameron (fat chance) ever decided to return to the series after stroking his Avatar ego... would of been nice to see Stan come back and push effects to the next level once again.

I remember him saying he didn't believe in going back to an older film and changing things which almost seemed like a jab at his friend George.

Almost Anything above 7.0 takes its place in my top 150 films of all time and has its place in my personal collection. In my case it's not a bad rating. A movie I don't dig would be anything below a 6/10.

Fair enough. I don't try to catalogue movies like that, so I just rate it purely on enjoyment rather than try to give it a contextual rating compared to everything else.

I'd give it a 9, while I'd give Alien a 10.

Oh you misunderstand - I was saying that some of the things that happen (in Indiana Jones:KOTCS) were just too silly - and I wasn't even including the fridge in that. For me the most ridiculous thing that happens in the movie is when Marion drives them all off the cliff onto a tree which gently lowers them to the ground...or was it even the ground...maybe it was into a surging river...which makes it even more absurd.
Now - how is that more ridiculous than Indy surviving a nuclear explosion by hiding in a fridge? Because in the case of what Marion did it wasn't a last-resort act of desperation. In fact she was quite chirpy about it and did it as though she had total foreknowledge that it would work and they would all survive. At least when Indy jumped in the fridge he probably assumed he was giving himself the best chance but he was still more than likely going to die. That he didn't was indeed ridiculous if these movies were intended to be realistic but they aren't so it was fine and he, the character, can put it down to sheer luck. However Marion somehow knew that they would all survive an impossible stunt. Her laughing behaviour after they then somehow survive 3 huge waterfall drops makes her look certifiably insane.

As a fellow atheist, I agree that extraterrestrials are much more likely to exist than either a Bronze Age WMD or a cup that grants everlasting life. But they seem so out of place for an Indiana Jones movie. At least they do to me. :dunno

I figured that'd be the 'why' you had a problem with Aliens. However if there's Christians today who actually do allow for the possibility or even likelihood of other intelligent lifeforms out in the universe then that's how I reconcile Indiana Jones KOTCS with the other films - I place myself into that mindset to enable me to accept both existing in this fictional universe.

The Free State of Jones-8.5/10 I can't understand why this movie got such mixed reviews, as, as far as I'm concerned, the McConnaissance is in full swing. There were a few pacing issues, in that it seems like a few minutes of the movie were padded with random shots of McConnaughey doing nothing, but, outside of that, it was a well written, well acted, compelling film that resonates now more than ever.

I'd say it's the same level the first one was. I think the first has a strong first act and loses steam the rest of the film, while this one is has a slow two acts while the third is better. I think the third film has some potential.

The Neverending Story. 2/10. Never saw this as a kid. Unwatchable for an adult without the benefit of nostalgia. Motherless nerd reads a book about a whiny kid who rides a flying dog-lizard-muppet around a Pagan utopia searching for a soft-spoken virgin child-queen in a seriously, uh, feminine-looking throne room. The payoff is scaring bullies with the dog-lizard-muppet.

Not sure why anybody over the age of 5 would like this nonsense.

I've never seen that film for some reason. I was aware of it, but it was one of those weird 80's children movies that never got my attention, plys I was more into action films.

Not the best work of anyone involved, but Polanski, Morricone, and 80s Ford is a filmmaking dream team. And it shows here. Great suspense, and the mystery unfolds very well, though the ending was a bit hackneyed.

I thought it was great! Very clever allegory for racism and sexism. I really loved them addressing the different scales of all the different animals—that had Pixar/Lassiter written all over it. And I loved that it was a mystery—nice to see a different genre slant in an animated movie.

Pretty good overall! The humor was spot-on and damn funny. Reynolds was perfect. The action was great. I thought it dragged a little bit when he wasn’t DP and all the flashbacks, but when he was on, it was great. I didn’t realize how tightly it fit in to the X-Men world. I thought it was just going to be Colossus and MTW just showing up to help DP out, but they also feature the X-Mansion and make a joke that it’s just the two of them. Also, the aircraft carrier in the end that they all fought on looked more like a helicarrier. Possible tie-in to the Avengers universe?

Chinatown 7/10. Good movie. Not great. Liked Nicholson's character a lot. The plot was good enough, though not as compelling as some other noir movies I've seen recently. The ending was kinda abrupt and unsatisfying, though. And, maybe it's just because it was made in a different era than most noir movies ... but I missed the presence of a true femme fatale character. Dunaway wasn't bad, but she was too innocent ... and the daughter/sister thing was weird.

It's possible I'd like this one better on a second viewing, though. That happened with No Country for Old Men -- especially with the abrupt, unsatisfying ending. No Country is now among my favorites.

Chinatown definitely benefits from multiple viewings. If for no other reason than you can better follow the labyrinthine plot. One of my favorite movies, even though I wouldn't give Polanski the sweat from my nether region if he were dying of thirst.

Real Life: 8/10

I've been a big Albert Brooks fan since I was in high school, and somehow missed this movie until now. Really terrific. Perfect casting of Charles Grodin. And a relevant commentary on "reality" TV, even though it was made before I was born. No way they would let someone get away with this kind of trailer nowadays, either:

Albert Brooks would have to be one of my 3 favorite comedic actors. He's always great, I just wish he worked more. I've seen everything except "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World", which I couldn't make it past 20 minutes of, it just seemed too painful.

That **** is hilarious. Cobra arrives at the supermarket last to make his entrance even more dramatic, then he goes in by himself without backup, singlehandedly kills the bad guy with his custom gun, but not before saying some cool line. Saves the day...goes home, but when he sees there's a guy parked on his spot, he removes the guy by force, rips the guy's shirt off and leaves him embarrassed in front of his gang. Then he finally makes it to his apartment, still wearing the jacket, gloves, and sunglasses inside his house, eats a cold slice of pizza which he cuts with some scissors while he cleans his gun. :lol

It's funny that I've been thinking of him quite a bit recently, as I saw Finding Dory a couple weeks back, and he's the voice of Nemo's dad, and then I saw the Pets movie last weekend, where he plays the voice of a hawk. So, he's getting work of a sort! He was also in Drive, which I guess most people here have seen. Probably the most high profile acting gig I've seen him have in a long while.

I liked it a lot more when it first came out. Though it had its moments, by and large this one fell flat. And overly sentimental. Of all the Albert Brooks movies, this one seems the most personal to him. And that can be a double-edged sword. But it also felt like he was trying to appeal to the broadest possible audience, given the cheesy ending.

One thing that was pretty cool though, was that this was a great time capsule for the period in which it was made (similar to some of his other films). The style of the houses, the refrigerator, the way people dressed, etc. all made me flash back to the '90s.

Gilda (1946) - 8/10

That's on my shortlist, if they'll ever play it on TCM.

Multiplicity ... 8/10. Way underrated movie. I'd put it right up there with some of the best comedies of that era. Everybody talks about the comic genius of Bill Murray ... but, this movie makes me think the true genius might've been Ramis. Murray wasn't anywhere near this, and it was every bit as good as some of Murray's best. Very funny ... and Michael Keaton was truly great. Some slightly over-the-top. Some very subtle. Not only does he play four distinct personalities ... but, there's a point where he actually plays the girly version of himself mimicking the manly version of himself ... which is impressive. One of the best comedies about manhood ever made.

Ghostbusters 9/10. Hadn't watched this in a long while. I remember loving it as a kid, mostly for the ghostbusting. As an adult, the humor really carries it. It's both clever, and surprisingly understated. Third act is a little weak, though. Not nearly as weak as the sequel.

Ghostbusters II 6/10. The humor's still there, especially at the beginning -- "And you don't want us exposing ourselves!". The plot ... not so much. Started off all right. The ending was crap. But, the plot is worth enduring for the comedy.

Ghostbroads ... 0/0. Opting out.

I always thought Louis was a sellout in this, turning his back on Nick to maker the girls happy. It's good, but I don't plan on buying 50 copies, like I did with Skate Expectation:

The Infiltrator 6.5/10

This film kinda got pushed under the carpet because of all the big budget summer films that are out. This film relies heavily on dialog,It's not trying to be Scarface.Based on a true story about US customs agents uncovering money laundering involving Colombian Drug King Pablo Escobar. It was very interesting. But the end result was a little bland. And I guess that is how it went down.
It was nice to see Diane Kruger in a film I'M a big fan of her's I think she is an excellent actress and was great in The Bridge series.

Carrie is my favorite SK story.

As remakes go, this one isn't bad at all, I think the original is better but if they injected some elements of the remake into the original, it would make both moves better, like a mix of both.

I also think Chloe Moretz is a good actress, but I didn't believe for a second that she was a bullied kid :lol

I wasn't on board at first, but this movie knows what it is, and does what it does well. A great representation of 80s movie tropes. Comically over the top at times, in a good way. Never seen such powerful grenades. Seedy city underbelly gets showcased. Mustache twirling villains, many of whom are corrupt cops. Very fun movie.

Eddie the Eagle: 5.5/10

Ok underdog story. They created cheesy 80s synth music as the soundtrack (to suit the time the movie was set in), but it got really annoying cos it was SO bad. I know and remember movies in the 80s had bad synth music, but it was usually bad, cheap (usually made-for TV) movies that had it. So really, it was expertly and faithfully done. The kid from Kingsman was the lead and played way against type.

Such a disappointment. Maybe A24 films just aren't for me...I really want to like them though.

Did have some good points. Great acting, set design, and costuming. The cinematography was off the chain in this film as well. Purposely changed aspect ratios when filming to make the trees look much taller on screen. Great use of a camera!

Plot and characters were so bad though (especially our main protagonist). Pacing was ice age slow and made a boring film even duller. Sound design wasn't anything to write home about either. Wasn't terrible, but wasn't great either.

ID Resurgence - 6.5/10 Slightly better than I thought it'd be.

Not as well made as TFA, but more original for sure, what TFA had in pacing and structure (because they were following a blueprint), IDR lacked, but what TFA lacked in originality, IDR had.

At some times it reached like an 8/10, but it has sooooo much unnecessary **** and characters that dragged this movie down, but the hype moments were hype, and the hype for the sequel is real for me, I hope they make it.

10 Cloverfield Lane: 6.5/10

Pretty good. I knew there was some kind of twist, but the way it all unfurled was very engaging. There were definitely surprises along the way. Mary Elizabeth Winstead was great! And so was John Goodman and the other guy.

I was half jokingly thinking that the movie could evolve to the Thing remake with Winstead!

I think the whole Cloverfield world is very original in the way it links together and how different they are in plot and story, and I'm game to seeing a third movie.

DAWN of the PLANET of the APES -- 7.5 / 10

Second viewing.

First time, it left me feeling kinda meh; possibly because 99% of the film is made up of CGI, & a lot of the time the characters look weightless & don't look 'present'. However, second time around the film grew on me. I like Jason Clarke in this (I've struck T-5 entirely from my memory as a matter of principle), Gary Oldman was great as Jim Gordon mk.II, & I'm always a fan of Kerri Russell. The Caesar / Koba dynamic was nicely done, & to be fair - a lot of the time the digital apes looked great. Maurice - love that guy!! :lol

The end got a little video game-y, with all the commotion & jumping around business during the big human / ape confrontation. Still, a solid film, & as a long time fan of this series, I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment. :rock

The things that really bothered me was..Why the Hell can the old damn cast be in it besides EGON of course for Just CAMEO'S.:gah: WHY not just continue what was all perfect instead of rebooting is what irked me.:gah: they could've just like hired new retired old cast if wanted. i'll never understand hollywood writers

Too much CGI and story pretty rushed imo. I LOL at Helmsworth role. I just i know i'm bias and wish it all went differnt and was old with new instead of rebooting. I 'll give no rating to it but do expect it on dvd pretty fast.
