Circle 2/10

Its on netlfix and a friend suggested it to me saying he thought i'd like it. I never even finished it. The only good part was Julie Benz from Dexter. The premise is a bunch of people stuck in a room together and on a time interval a person dies (a very boring a lame death) one at a time. And they try to figure out whats going on. Within 30 mins the movie tackles racism, ageism, homophobia, .bla bla bla. It was like a college student film, a bad one.

I cared more about the robots in Interstellar than I did for the entire human race. That's a big problem in a movie about human extinction. Plus I felt like he was trolling Batman fans by using Lazarus so much. Mr I'm too realistic to have Al Ghul use Lazarus pits, but yet in this movie we hear the word like 5 times.

Sicario - 8/10

A very wholesome family story, involving an FBI and CIA joint-operation to take down the leader of a Mexican drug cartel. Starring: Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and a guest appearance from Shane from The Walking Dead - with the Zombie make-up still fresh on his face from Season 2. Recommended especially for young kids and elderly church-goers!!

I can't rate Sphere as a movie. The book is all kinds of the awesome. I have only seen the movie once and was thoroughly disappointed by it. Samuel L. Jackson was a good casting choice. I can't remember any of the other cast apart from Dustin Hoffman. He was an alright choice I guess. I highly recommend the book. I haven't read all of Crichton's stuff but I haven't ever read a "bad" book. Sphere is one of the better ones.

I liked Interstellar more upon my second viewing. I picked it up on Bluray for $4 on Black Friday last year. My son opened the case shortly after and cracked the disc in half. I'm in no rush to replace it but if I see it for $4 again I'd probably add it to the collection once more.

While Interstellar is a popcorn version of 2001 in its sentimentality, it did the science stuff much much better than 2001.

You could tell Kubrick didn't quite get what A.C. Clarke wanted to depict, and went instead for an acid trip :slap while Nolan perfectly understood Thorne's work.

I can't argue with that. Both science fiction movie with entirely different strengths. I wouldn't hold Interstellar up to 2001, but it is groundbreaking in the fact that it gets so much of the science right, even if there are a couple of times it panders to the audience.

Even when pandering to the audience, you still got the occasional idiot "why is this science dude explaining to this other science dude why wormholes are spheres? Hurrrrrr" :lol

If interstellar was much colder in its approach, leaving the love stuff entirely implict for the audience to figure out, and had better dialogue, it would be as good as 2001. But 2001 is still better in that regard, and a couple others, and has a bigger scope.

But all and all I'll stick to the A.C. Clarke books. Haven't read the entire book by Thorne though.

I almost gave it a 9.5, and as much as I love the entire film I think Dutch vs. Predator alone wasn't as fun as Dutch's Team vs. Predator. I'm not saying I'm displeased with the third act, just I didn't have as much fun with it... maybe it's because Dutch had no one to interact with. But the film couldn't have gone a different route from what it did and work.

Short version? If we can agree that filmmaking is an art, it should be capable of engaging you both on an intellectual and emotional level. Kubrick fails again and again through his movies when it comes to the second part.

Which is fine: there are people out there capable of loving an emotionally dead film like Barry Lyndon...but in my opinion if your movie only works on an intellectual level you would be better writing an essay.

True. What an extraordinary film it is, but not one I can watch often. I once met Keir Dullea, unfortunately it was before I'd ever seen 2001, I would have loved to ask him about Kubrick.

Did you ever see the online doc that theorizes the monolith as being the movie screen? I had never looked at it like that, but I think I'd need to watch it again to speak intelligently about it.

I agree. Congo was horrible, both the book and the film.

I personally love the Congo film and am not ashamed to admit it. It is probably the most hated movie that I love nearly every aspect of. I must have been the perfect age when it was released.

I did forget I never finished "Lost World: Jurrasic Park." That book was utter garbage and went nowhere for 3/4 of the narrative. I also didn't finish Andromeda Strain. I found that one to have a fascinating concept but thought it was pretty boring in its prose compared to his later works.

Funny. I, on the other hand, think that Kubrick is grossly overrated. Great director no doubt, intelligent and with an extraordinary visual talent...but the poor guy could not recognize a human emotion even if you were to hit his face with it repeatedly :D
I can't agree with this one. In Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, and particularly the Shining, he showed a great ability to effectively convey a range of complex emotions. Of course, his technical acumen saturated the films he worked on, but within that there was still fear, angst, paranoia, fury, love and compassion.

I'll never forget seeing Charlie's Angels in the theater because when Tim Curry got killed the girl next to me said, "aww, poor Tim Curry."
Dammit, don't you people know how to use ****ing spoiler tags???? YOU RUINED IT!!!

But whose going to improve it? Who even knows what to improve most of the time? Usually, for me, if a film is good enough for a 9 it's good enough for a 10. I'll hold back a point if I do have a clear idea what wasn't quite right. Otherwise I'm not going to hold back a point 'just because'.

Just talking generally by the way. This isn't a reaction to any particular score anyone gave any film.

Jaws and Empire are perfect films for me. I have no issue giving films 10 out of 10. It means they have achieved classic status. Meaning I have seen them many times and they are still great, perfect or not. I have to consider how much a film entertains me when I do my rating also. Basically a film does not have to be perfectly made if it is perfectly entertaining. However Jaws And Empire do both perfectly.

Yeah, I was speaking mainly of the films that have stood the test of time and never really get old - those are the ones I happily dish out 10s to. A brand new film, maybe I'd give a 10 if I enjoyed it tremendously but with the caveat that if the film doesn't stand up to repeat viewings my score would reduce over time.

Civil War: 8/10

Terrific, terrific comic book movie. This is how it's done.

As for giving movies 10, like JAWS, there are a smattering of movies I've seen that are so well done, I consider them just as perfectly executed as I could ask for, across the board. Any flaws are so minor that they're hardly worth mentioning. They are movies that make you appreciate the human condition more having watched them. Jaws, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Double Indemnity, North by Northwest, Dr. Strangelove, the Godfather (1 and 2), Alien, Raiders, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Terminator, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Die Hard, Big Lebowski, A History of Violence, these are some that, on a given day, I might rank as a 10. But there aren't going to be too many of these for me. I'm not sure any comic book movie I've seen warrants this (unless you count Violence), even the Nolan films (which are the best out there IMO).

I just saw it 2 days ago, and it's really not that bad. Casting certainly wasn't fitting of the characters, and Doom was too schizo; but I don't think it was horrible. I don't think the sequel will work for the audience as well as this seemed to, only so many 4th wall breaking, "clever" comments they can make before the jokes get a little old. Jokes seemed pretty obvious and predictable to me, feel like I could have written this movie, and that's not a compliment.

You nailed it, incredibly overrated, half of the dialogue is retarded, and the plot is stupid.

But it's DP so it's ok, the other half of the dialogue is pretty good, and the action is great.

It was a weird meme phenomenon of people pretending to be deadpool fans, the movie itself catering to the lowest common denominator of DP "fans", and a great marketing campaign.

I also like it, because it's deadpool, but that **** is a 6 for me, a 6.5 if I'm in a good mood.

Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid - 10/10

Great movie. :duff

Deadpool - 6.75/10

It was decent, but way overrated IMO. Some funny moments, but not as funny as I expected. I think the love for this movie is a product of some weird groupthink. I don't think the sequel will work for the audience as well as this seemed to, only so many 4th wall breaking, "clever" comments they can make before the jokes get a little old. Jokes seemed pretty obvious and predictable to me, feel like I could have written this movie, and that's not a compliment.

I almost blind bought it, but got a code to watch it on Cinemanow in my email for free, glad I saved some money.

I liked it, just think its really overrated.

Good points. I liked the fight scenes and the interaction with Colossus and Negasonic but the villain was weak and the origin story could've been more succinct.

The Boy - 61/100.

Managed to make it through F4, wasn't the abomination of Cinema I came to expect, nothing special either. The first hour was ok, the last half hour was pretty bad.

So, this rating seems appropriate...

Fantastic 4 - 4/10

I think diminished expectations plus lack of exposure to the comic book (or caring about it) go a long way. Doom looked pretty bad though, and the end battle was tedious and made little sense. I didn't totally hate it though, but I'm not likely to ever watch it again.

Well, I did scour Reddit (for all of, like, 5 minutes), and I did find a cool little explaination:

-The real person is Adam, who's a boring teacher, so he creates a "dupe" that is an actor, has a hot affair, etc, etc.
-When his mother tells him to drop acting because of his respectable job, she's talking about his teaching one.
-When his wife asks him how was school, she didn't find out that the "dupe" came home, she's just asking the "real" one, about his day at work, but decides to drop it when he doesn't respond, as she knows he's kinda... not all there.
-The movie is told not in a chronological order, with the car-crash happening before the movie's events, and that's where the scar comes from.
-The final shot with the spider retreating, is his wife understanding that he's "fallen down the rabbit hole" again, and kinda being afraid of him, hence why he looks relieved in a way.

That, or the spiders are aliens and it's an Invasion-type movie...

You did better than me, I think I turned it off after 30 minutes.

Well, I'm not much for horror so I did think about that when it started getting too "nuts", but I stuck with it. Am I glad? Eh, honestly, I don't know. It's a weird film. I've seen other "slow moving" flicks as well, but that was... "different", in a way.

My Daughter kept asking where Quicksilver was, after the movie I "reminded" her that he dies in AOU. She got quite angry and told me that I was wrong. I think she is confusing him with X-Men's QS. Anyway, best to just avoid the topic with her from here on out.

The villain was great. I bagged it because of the protagonist, I almost cried when he survived.

It's a decent film, but for me it was a case of its constituent parts being much greater than the whole. All of the characters were beautifully portrayed and rendered, but as a chase movie I found it meh.

Are you making a concession for the performance, or you thought it was outstanding in its own right? Green screen or not, I just didn't like this Mowgli - in which case the premise of the movie fell flat for me.

OK, maybe not a chase movie. How about "self-discovery and evasion" movie. Either way, I thought the '67 movie was the better take on it.

I don't know if it's a concession, the vast majority of child actors do suck big time, and he not only doesn't suck, he gave a pretty good performance, not only that, with nothing but green screen... Sounds to me like the opposite of a concession :lol

I haven't seen the 67 movie, and I haven't seen the cartoon movie in ages either, hell I haven't even read the original story (which I've been meaning to for a while), so maybe it struck me a lot fresher than it is, but in its own right I think it's a very good movie both artistically and technically.

It was never a secret. :lol

"The film has many settings in common with Silent Hill, such as the hospital and subway. In the first game, Harry Mason dies and everything was just a hallucination in the "bad ending". In the second game, James Sunderland shares the initials of Jacob Singer and his jacket is very similar to Jacob's U.S. Army jacket. There is also a "Lyne House Key" which refers to Adrian Lyne, director of Jacob's Ladder. In the third game, Heather Mason must find the Bergen Street platform. There is a scene of Jacob, strapped to a gurney, going down a nightmarish hospital hall that is reminiscent of the scene in which James is wheeled through a hall on a gurney in Brookhaven Hospital. In the texture files, the same poster Jacob Singer sees in the subway can be found. Among other things, the "twitch" that many monsters do with their heads, one example being Valtiel, was inspired by the film. The hospital scene in the movie depicts a bicycle's wheel turning by itself, similar to a wheelchair seen in Brookhaven's basement by Heather or the wheelchair Harry sees in the alley in the first game. A few moments later, a humanoid is seen in a sort of frame/box, which has also been seen in the series, such as the corpses in Pyramid Head's lair in the Labyrinth, and around bosses such as Mary and Abstract Daddy."
