I agree with you, I actually loved the movie, it has a lot of heart and personality, I liked all the protagonists, I hated them at first but ended up liking them, but there's no denying the movie is seriously overflowing with flaws on every level, I'd give it a 4/10, I also agree the cinematography was below mediocre.

Yet, despite all its problems, it still made me laugh, it made me interested in the story and characters, it gave me feels. Imo it's a very good very bad movie :lol

Chappie - 5.5/10 I wanted to like this movie more than I did. Still do. I just can't get over the fact that we're supposed to be rooting for these criminals like they're good people. Mommy? ok I can get that she was cool. But Ninja? Please. Are we supposed to like this guy at the end of the movie? He was a thug who turned this cool AI robot into a thug. Lame. He didn't have one redeeming quality about him. And also....do people really talk like that? I just couldn't get over the dialogue.

Movie also just reminded me of Short Circuit 2 waaaaaaaay too much. 5.5/10

Avatar 3D - 8/10

I would LOVE to see this in 3D again. One of the best cinema experiences of my life.

I haven't seen Annabelle because I've heard it's bad, but I liked the Conjuring a lot, and I've also heard that if you liked the Conjuring, you're not gonna like Annabelle :lol

Sucks cause Annabelle was really creepy in The Conjuring, as was everything else in that movie.

Yea same for me. The Conjuring was one of the best scary movies for me in a long, long time. Saw it in the theater and it creeped me out big time. Especially the Annabelle doll. But I've heard the same thing that most of you have heard and that's the new Annabelle movie is not good at all which is why I haven't bothered with it.

I was seeing shadows move and stuff behind me in the mirror. :horror Took me a day or two to get over it lol. Sometimes a horror movie will hit you in just the right way and will stick with you. I watched it again with my older brother and he didn't think it was scary, and honestly wasn't the same for me on second viewing.

The Ghostbusters are indeed famous by the point they hire Winston but no one believes them.

The public at large think they are scam artists who have ridden to fame on a bunch of made up nonsense. It's the 80s, there was no footage of anything on TV up to that point that proved they were really busting ghosts and the handful of people they helped couldn't hop on Reddit and post about their experience.

You guys may not remember, may be too young or from russia... :lol but there was a ton of scam artists on tv in the 80s. This one guy would convince children via tv commercials and buying air time, to steal/send their parents jewelry to him. :lol

Even Winston's reaction to being hired makes it clear he doesn't understand what he's getting into. Janine asks if he believes in paranormal and his response is that if there is a pay check, he'll believe anything, indicating he's willing to go along with, what as far as he knows, is the lie they're perpetuating.

It's why Peck wants them shut down, why the cops are on his side, why the mayor needs convincing... etc. I mean, even Dana is skeptical and she saw actual ghosts.

Now Ghostbusters 2 is a different story. For the kids at the party to still not believe that Mr Stay Puft happened when they had actual tv cameras at that event at the end of 1, doesn't make sense. But Ghostbusters 2 is pretty meh in general.

I don't know what the public perception was because the film didn't really explore that angle. The media seemed to be on their side for the most part, since they were featured on tv shows and magazines. Business was booming, and even if it's true that a percentage of the population thought they were scam artists, there are always those who fall for the scam artist and blindly believe. They were popular and in need of help, so you would think there would be a lot more people in NY city interested in making some money and being famous, not to mention that there must have been more people out there who truly believed in the paranormal, plus the percentage of the population who buys into the scam artists.

Also, Walter Peck was an inspector for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the reason he wanted to shut them down was not because he thought they were liars or stealing people's money, it was because the EPA wanted to assess the Ghostbusters' operations for any possible environmental impact, such as the the presence of noxious, possibly hazardous waste chemicals created by the storage facility and their equipment.

It was only after Peck messed up by blowing up the facility, letting all the ghosts escape that he lies and blames the explosion on the Ghostbusters and accuses them of being scam artists, even though at that point, there are so many ghost incidents going on in the city, that it's clear that it's not a scam.

That's an usual complaint, and I think the movie is misunderstood in that regard, you're not supposed to like them because they're good guys, cause they're obviously not, you're supposed to like them for the good they can do within their context, they grew on me regardless of the fact that I knew they were *******s, well, at least Ninja was, Yo-Landi was pretty cute all the time.

Yes, there are people who really talk like that. :lol seriously.

Maybe it's just taste, I loved the movie personally and the camera manoeuvring was one of the best parts of the film for me. The movies also got quite a lot of dark comedy in it, and if that's not your thing then it might fail on that front.

Maybe it will click with a second viewing, the best thing to do is just let it take you on a ride - that's the purpose of the camera work - no loss of tension :)

Terminator - 9/10
T2: Judgement day - 10/10

I love Terminator but I love T2 even more, not only it's an improvement in every aspect from the original, it's infinitely more charged with meaning and themes too, I love how it explains the origins of AI in such a dark, foreshadowing way, I love how it also explores humanity and human nature itself, for that alone it's more important and heavier than the first one, and overall, I think the 90's suits this franchise a little better than the 80's, at least for the "present" time parts.

Because T2 said everything there is to be said about human nature and fate so eloquently, for me, it ends with this one, the rest (TV show included) are purposeless shallow cash grabs and should've never been made, perhaps T3 gets a pass because it was still honest, if not a little redundant.

Yeah you're right, and all around it's pretty much based on if you prefer bad Arnie or good Arnie, but if you think about it, neither is really bad or good, it's just a machine doing what it's supposed to.

Not true. I saw T1 for the first time as a freshman in high school. I was NOT impressed. I have a feeling had I watched T2 at that age I'd have loved it. But I didn't bother until I rewatched T1 as a college student. Loved it. Followed it up with T2 and eh. I found it to be a shallow action movie by comparison. My tastes had changed. I get the appeal of T2 but I much prefer T1.

Jupiter Ascending 3D - 5/10

Well there are worse ways to kill a couple hours and this one had some pretty spectacular visuals, especially in 3D. So good that I actually wouldn't be surprised if it got a Best Visual Effects nomination for this year. Tatum and Kunis were actually decent but the villains were straight out of Underworld. That's actually the vibe I got from the whole movie: Underworld in space. Secret society of ever young kind of lame villains, chick that is in love with a dog, and so on.

It wasn't tense, it wasn't exciting, a lot of the aliens had a weird "tried too hard" vibe to their designs, not really anything that would make me recommend this movie aside from the visuals. But still that being said I wasn't pissed off that I spent the time to watch it either. At least it wasn't based off a comic book.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - 7/10

I thought it started extremely strong but kind of fizzled out by the end. At least I now know that the new John Connor guy can act. Overall I'd say it was a decent but forgettable flick.

Jurassic World -- 8/10. Great sequel, and a more natural sequel to Jurassic Park than either Lost World or JP3. And, it corrected a lot of the problems with JP2 and JP3.

In retrospect, I thought the biggest problem with JP3 was that there was no plan, and nobody who knew what they were doing. They got stranded on the island. All of their gunmen died fast. And then they wandered to the coast, and, surprise, the Marines picked them up. That's not a plan. It's an accident. In each of the other three movies, there's been a badass with a plan. And, one of the main problems with TLW was that the badass with the plan was supposed to be the villain. Which was stupid. Vince Vaughn's character, an alleged good guy, caused a bunch of the mess with his hippie nonsense (releasing the dinos, destroying the camp, and disarming the hunter). The 'villain' got them out of it.

JP4 turned all of it back the way it should be. There is a hero. There is a plan. The hero is the guy with the plan. They got away from the 'naturalist' stuff to get back to the 'technology run amok' theme of JP1. The action was great. The dinos were awesome. The T-Rex returned as the hero, as opposed to getting offed by the new dino (like in JP3). And, I thought the 'training' and weaponization of the raptors was done extremely well.

Maleficent -- 6/10. Not bad. Best part was Jolie's appearance and speech at the Christening. She was completely awesome in that scene -- and that scene makes me irritated at the rewrite of the rest of the tale. She would've been a completely badass villain. They should've made her the pure villain Maleficent should be. Watching the Sleeping Beauty tale from the perspective of the villain would've been very interesting ... rewriting the Sleeping Beauty tale to make the villain the hero is just annoying. I was fine with the King part -- making him the reason for her turn. But, not with making Maleficent change her mind, or be the deliverer of 'true love's kiss'. Irritating revision. Make her a sympathetic villain if you must, but don't turn her into the hero ... it ruins the character.

I think to an extent Psycho has been spoiled by overexposure. It's truly a great film, but it's been payed homage to, parodied, and ripped off too much for its own good.

Like Patriot said, the film has a great feeling of suspense running through it. But due to the homages, parodies and ripoffs, the film's twists don't really fire like they would have back in 1960. The film isn't dated as such, but in a way it is the victim of its own popularity.

Yeah that's a pretty fair summation I guess. I vaguely recall the first time I saw snippets of 'the shower scene' on TV when I was very young, & it was frightening. FF 30+ years later, & while I've seen it right through a few times, it just has no impact on me, & I don't find it engaging at all.

Jurassic World - 73/100 before the Riding With Raptors bit at the end, -4297/100 with its inclusion. It's even worse than sharks with friggin' lasers on their heads and that was played for laughs.

ESB (Harmy Despecialized Edition) - 96/100.

ROTJ (Harmy Despecialized Edition) - 85/100.

Harmy's the only way to watch the OT, but oddly enough, I missed some of George's later adds. For example, the original Death Star explosions are really, really, REALLY underwhelming.

Chappie - 74/100. It's almost impossible to watch Die Antwoord bumble along on screen without wanting to pluck your own eyes out.

Pompeii - 51/100. Kiefer Sutherland's turn as a Roman senator is laughably bad. And he's the best part about the movie.

I've heard of that theory. I like Signs but I don't think it's about demons. I think that's kind of a dumb theory.

With Shyamalan, there's usually much less to the story than meets the eye IMO.

Amazing acting, flawless direction, a brilliant script, a beautiful final score by Bernard Herrmann... it's one of my all time favourites, but it is a film that grew on me with rewatching.

The trio of director Martin Scorsese, writer Paul Schrader and star Robert De Niro was a real class act, it also resulted in Raging Bull :)

Saw this once, and I don't know what the allure to it is... maybe I should watch it again.

I've seen it countless times over the years and, although it is very much of it's time and place (like a time capsule of mid '70's New York), I never tire of it. I might not go as high as giving it a 10/10, but it's right up there with Scorsese/De Niro's very best collaborations, so easily earns a 9.

It's an unflinching study of isolation, social ineptness, paranoia and slowly brewing mental instability. Due to the 'slumming it self-parody' he's devolved into since the double whammy of Heat and Casino, it's easy to forget the impact De Niro had on screen acting. He was the guy every other young actor wanted to be at the *** end of the 70's, going into the early 80's. His bravura performance as Travis Bickle (and the stories of how intensely he inhabited the role) was the reason why.

If someone were drawn into watching it solely by such iconic and oft-referenced scenes as the "you talking to me" mirror riff, or the finger flying bloodbath finale, then I can maybe see how they might find the film a slog to get through. It's a character piece, pure and simple. It's not a crime caper or crazy guy on a rampage revenge flick, which is the expectation I think a lot of people who haven't seen it go into this film with now.

For me, the two stand outs have always been the oddly off kilter narration and Benard Herrmans score, which combine to give the whole film a hypnotic, dreamlike quality that's difficult to shake.

Seriously, I would highly recommend watching it again. Preferably, late at night after a few drinks, when you're just lazing around on your own and let the filth wash over you.

On another note: I just watched Lars Von Triers 'Antichrist' for the second time last night and I still can't decide if I think it's a 9/10 work of insane genius, or a 1/10 self-indulgent wankfest. Some elements of the film had me considering it a possible descendant of 'Don't Look Now', whilst others had me wondering if any of it was ever intended to be taken seriously in the first place and whether Von Trier was just flipping everyone the finger whilst manically laughing his arse off.

Another reason I love Taxi Driver so much is my personal preference to that era of film. My favourite period is the late '60s - very early '80s period where directors were given a pretty free reign by the studios. Along with some of my other favourites, like The Godfather 1 and 2, Chinatown, Apocalypse Now, and The Graduate, to me Taxi Driver is one of the best movies of the New Hollywood movement.

I heartily agree. About 70 percent of the films made during that golden period from the late 60's on to the early 80's wouldn't even make it to the screen these days. One of my all time favourite films is Jaws, but the way that whole movie blew up into 'an event', followed closely by such merchandising monsters as Superman and Star Wars, led to the studios continually scrambling around searching for the next summer blockbuster and effectively called time on that era (yes Peter Biskind, I did read your book way too many times when I was at college).

Can you imagine trying to sell something like Five Easy Pieces these days? They'd be like "Nothing happens. It's just about some guy. What do you mean there's a big scene where he plays the piano? Does the piano transform into a robot? No? Well, can we change the script so that the piano does change into a robot?"

Absolutely, I've always found it ironic that some of the greatest movies of the time, Jaws and Star Wars, led to the end of that era, in addition to the horrible financial failures of Heaven's Gate and One From the Heart.

Alright, I haven't been in this thread in a while, so I'm just going to rapid fire this stuff off:

Mad Max Fury Road- 9/10 I didn't have any interest in the movie, but after seeing all the praise, I figured I had to see it. I loved it!

China Town- 10/10- I need to bump Empire Strikes Back from my top 5 movies now for this. I absolutely loved it. Actually, I was going to bump it anyways. I recently tried to watch Return of the Jedi and that kind of turned me off from Star Wars. I'm sure the fire will reignite once Force Awakens hits.

First Blood- 7/10- Whenever I heard of Rambo, I always thought of some mindless meat-head movie. I'm glad I was wrong! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Terminator 2- 8/10 I don't think I ever saw this whole movie. I think I only saw some parts and got bored, because I got enough the the time travel stuff from the first movie (I just never cared time travel in stories). Whenever they stopped focusing on a lot of the future aspects (I liked the playground part though), I really enjoyed the movie.

The Graduate 9/10- It's even better than the first time I saw it! It might be my favorite comedy of all time.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990- 2/10 I loved it when I was a little kid, and I saw that some listed it as one of the best comic book movies, so I wanted to check it out again. Never again.

Superman II- 4/10- After reading (and loving) Superman for All Seasons, I wanted to watch a Superman movie. I figured I'd give this another chance after not seeing it for so long. This made me hate Superman.

Pretty Woman 8/10- I'm not into romantic comedies, but I really liked this movie. I haven't seen Julia Roberts in a movie since the Ocean flicks, and I really liked her as an actress. I'm going to check out some more movies with her.

Fury 7/10- It was fine...This was a really one-sided movie with some good drama. It's not one of the best WWII films, but I liked it.

Fury 7/10- It was fine...This was a really one-sided movie with some good drama. It's not one of the best WWII films, but I liked it.

:slap With you listing a load of older films, I thought you were referring to 'The Fury'....De Palma's teen with telekenisis follow up to Carrie...and it wasn't until the mention of WWII I realised otherwise. I was like, 'One Sided? Yeah, I guess the whole thing is told almost entirely from Kirk Douglas's point of view' :slap

Nice to see some real love for Chinatown on there as well. I've got to ask though; how old are you never to have seen Chinatown, First Blood and T2 before? I kind of envy anyone watching those movies for the first time.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - 5,759/9,000I think this movie was quite overrated at the time of it's release, but that rating is a bit harsh IMO.

I think 5,760/9,000 is more appropriate.
