It was a MUCH scarier watch in the cinema, with conditioners working on "sub-zero" level. :lol
At least you got the 'full' experience then. :lol

It's funny that the only good thing about it was redone and gone because their test audience felt stupid.
Cheers for those links man, I'll definitely check'em out. :duff

haha thats a great rating to give a movie :lol
I have never seen the remake. Now I definitely will not watch it. I did see the original though
Your mileage may vary, but honestly there's really nothing redeeming about it as far as I'm concerned. :lol

Also yeah - as EVILFACE & RIDDICK mentioned, Carpenter's film was a re-imagining of the actual original film from the 50s, 'The Thing From Another World'. Worth a watch, if only for the nostalgia factor.

Agree. Cruise is physically no where near Jack Reacher, but channeled the character well. Lots of changes from the book, but was executed well in the movie. Addition of the Chevelle rocked.

Loved Jack Reacher as well. I just listened to the first novel in the JR series and enjoyed it (although it was written in 1997 so the technology--or lack thereof--is a little distracting sometimes), and also just got the BluRay but haven't gotten around to watching it again.

I enjoyed John Wick too.

Black Rock (2012) - 5/10

When camping on a small island Kate Bosworth and two other girls tick off some hunters that were recently dishonorably discharged from Iraq and must fight for their lives. I tend to like movies where people are being hunted in the woods and this one wasn't horrible. It held my interest throughout.

Revenge of the Sith (2005) - 6/10

I recently watched the final season of the Clone Wars which I thought was very well done. Talk about 11th hour damage control. So then I decided to watch ROTS immediately after and I find that it plays much better as the theatrical finale of a TV series then as an actual chapter of the main SW saga.

I haven't read any THOR comics, just watched the old 60s motion comics on TV back in the day when they were reran in the 80s, & read a little online & whatnot - so my knowledge is pretty limited. The hate, at least from me comes in the form of predictable lame story, horrible villain, honestly, Malekith is nothing like in the movie, uber boring action, awkward characters in general etc etc

It's got a lot of fun parts and it's mostly thanks to Dennings, which makes her less useless that Jane herself.

I have seen the first one (& own it), so I can see what you mean about Natalie to a degree - she's not the right fit for these films. That said, I'm a big fan of hers - not counting SW EpII & III or the other throw away crap she's done.

Her sidekick? They could've replaced her with a well trained Labrador & it wouldn't have made an iota of difference - in fact, I'd enjoy it more because the dog would actually be cute & helpful. :lol

GasparZizou
03-21-2015, 08:09 PM
But she's not supposed to be helpful, but the exact opposite, she isn't even a science student, she's supposed to be funny, I don't like her broke girls show, and I'm not really a fan of her, but she made things better in the movie.

A movie has to be abysmal if a comedic relief tertiary character is one of the highest points.

This isn't a spoiler but it's later in the movie.

Just missing a laugh track.

Somebody should make a "Too Many Cooks" opening containing scenes from all the Marvel movies. They could do things like giving Mjolnir his own credit, showing Coulson getting impaled then turning and smiling at the camera as his name flashed across the screen, inappropriate laugh tracks as certain characters are "dying," etc.

As it happens, I reached the finale of both The Shield and Breaking Bad in the same weekend. My wife and I have been working our way through Breaking Bad over the last couple of months ... and I've been catching re-runs of The Shield on NUVO a couple of times a week (though I don't think I saw all of Seasons 1 or 2).

Both finished this weekend. Holy crap. Hell of a weekend of TV.

Breaking Bad, Season 5/Felina. 10/10. Entirely satisfying. We didn't watch any Breaking Bad until after the series was already done (DVR'd the AMC marathon leading up to the finale). I'll admit ... we got a bit into Season 3, and started wondering what all the hype was about. It was good, but hardly the masterpiece that everybody seemed to be raving about. But, it really took off in Season 4 ... and then kicked into another gear for the last eight episodes of the series. The finale was completely satisfying.

Ozymandias may be one of the best hours of television out there -- right up there with ...

The Shield, Family Meeting. 10/10. Holy crap. That was an intense finale. The ending was both surprising and fitting. I didn't watch religiously until the Forrest Whittaker season ... but, it didn't disappoint at all.

I'm going to have to track down that "Top 5 Completed TV Series" thread and completely revise my list. Might have to wait for Justified to end in a few weeks, though. Hopefully, the finale can keep up with these two.

Next up, Sons of Anarchy ... right after we catch up on Better Call Saul (five episodes behind), and my wife catches up on Fargo and True Detective (I've already seen both) before Season 2 of each.

Not a fan of BCS. I like Breaking Bad, but I do think it's a bit overhyped. Mainly fanboy of BB will praise BCS. Eh just me. But I love SoA. I literally just finished season 5 today and I started last night :lol

I've seen the first two BCS episodes. I liked them quite a bit. I don't like lawyer shows (I'm an attorney, so, bleh), but Saul is more of a crime drama with a lawyer as the main character than a genuine lawyer show. And, he's interesting enough to carry the series. I'd like to see them bring back Bill Burr and the big black fella, though.

It's not quite BB ... but, then again, neither was BB after only a few episodes. It might've actually started stronger than BB.

With BB behind us, The Shield finished, and Justified coming to an end (I'd love a spinoff of that, though ... maybe with Wynn Duffy) ... Sons is next. Probably start it this summer.

Her - 100/100

Absolutely stunning movie. I have to say this may easily make it into one of my top 3 films of all time. I can't even go and explain how much I love this film; first off, I hardly ever care for a score. Not out of ignorance, but because often I'm too immersed in the story or dialog or even visuals, that I often dismiss the soundtrack or scores. This film actually had me paying attention to it, and it's incredible; an absolute auditory orgasm. As for the casting, I think this easily was spot on. Phoenix is great as Twombly and conveys a complex character, while ironically Johannson does a fantastic job as an OS that it comes off more human than Phoenix sometimes. Her voice was fantastic, and every syllable conveys a tone and emotion, regardless of shouts or hushed whispers. While it is a dramatic romance, it has some incredible humor; while I was surprised at the use Pratt, I feel he could have been used more to cause a bit more humor. Amy Adams was also a fun character; and can easily be a hit or miss as a character. I feel she was great, and while not parallel to Twombly's experience, she does a great job to get there. Overall setting was also great, this kind of techno dependent futuristic culture and diversity; and really has you considering how we all are so involved with our electronic devices; hell one note that got me was when there was a mention of a publishing firm that still prints books. Sad thought really. I literally can't recommend this film enough to anyone, absolutely heart love and break of a roller coaster. Now I think I need to see Gone Girl again to hate women again. :lol

Ehh.. going off the snippets I'd already seen, I thought I was going to like it - nah. Keanu is Keanu, the lovely Rachel Weisz is made to talk with a ridiculous American accent, the guy playing Lucifer was appropriately vile - but cheesy, FX were video game-y, & the only positive being Tilda Swinton, was under used.

Dune (1984) ---------------- 4/10
Ok, here I go about to spark another fiery debate.. :lol

I love David Lynch's stuff. That said - regarding his version of DUNE, I'd never seen the film before until about a year ago. I'd heard & read countless comments on how it's so bad it's a tragedy, yada yada. Not long before I ended up watching it though, I caught up with an old friend who explained to me the whole deal on how grand & sprawling the story was, & how the Lynch film just didn't reflect that in the end. I have no history with this story, so I was willing to learn from those that could enlighten me.

Well.. then I watched the film. Yeah. Having no prior understanding beyond the basics, I really liked it. I honestly did. I actually bought it too. Since that first viewing, I've gathered bits of info here & there & read up. Frank Herbert clearly had a vision, & it's fair enough that David Lynch wants / wanted to distance himself as far away as possible from the 1984 film & his involvement with it.

I feel a bit silly that I've only recently somewhat gotten up to speed with the whole sordid affair. :lol

I have to say that I'm a huge Lynch Dune fan. I watched the movie before I ever read the book, so that probably biased my opinion. But I thought Lynch's vision for that world was brilliant. Genius even. I have subsequently read the book several times throughout the years and the differences between the movie and book do not bother me in the least. I think the way the story unfolds in the movie works fine. Maybe it's not as sprawling and grand as the book is, but I look at it more as a "quiet" film with a lot of mood and atmosphere that tells a compelling story. I find it similar to Blade Runner in that "quiet" tone. I like that the tone is not overly adventure-y and is more harsh and dark. I love most everything about it, from the art direction to the set designs and general design direction of all the props and vehicles and creatures and costumes. I think the weirding module was a good way to "visualize" the weirding way fighting style of the Fremen.

I can't say enough positive things about it. And it is a shame that Lynch wants nothing to do with it anymore. I would love for it to be revisited and perhaps rediscovered so we can get more behind the scenes information about the movie. I would LOVE a making-of book about it, with lots of photos and such.

I should really get around to watching Jodorowsky's Dune.

Jodorowsky's Dune is the equivalent to a bunch of pot-heads sitting in a circle and coming up with pie in the sky crazy ideas. There's no way his version of Dune could have been made. It would have bankrupted several studios.

I forgot about this thread!

American Sniper: 7/10 I didn't worry about the politics or controversy while watching. I thought it was good.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol- 9/10 I never watched a movie in this franchise, but I was really interested after seeing the commercial for the new movie. It's just a lot of fun. I think Brad Bird is great! He's now one of my favorite directors.

Kill Bill Vol. 1: 7/10 Personally, I really don't like the violence or language content of Tarantino films. I was going to rate this higher because I felt like I had to. However, I'm not a critic so whatever! I still really enjoyed it but it was in spite of those things. I haven't watched all Tarantino movies, but Inglorious Basterds is the only one I loved throughout.

For Greater Glory: 5/10 It's a low budget film, so I watched it with that in mind. It's got a nice message.

That's a high rating for me. Really excellent film. And of course, an extremely disturbing and tragic examination of human frailty. As a former wrestler and fan of the sport, I was impressed at how authentic the wrestling aspects all came off.

I found "Her" way too slow and never got into it. I had to bail out at the 40 minute mark.

I don't give out full marks lightly, however this is anything but light filmmaking. Clocking in at about 3 hours and 40 minutes, this is the ur-text for simulated reality in science fiction films. A brilliant, slow-burning exploration of what it means to be human and the nature of reality.

If fast-paced blockbusters like Avengers are your favourite types of movie, this will probably put you in a coma. Not for everyone.

A nice adaptation of (mostly) the Gospel of Luke. I'd give it 10/10 if it were about 20 minutes longer. The Passion itself feels rushed but it's a movie for all ages so I am less critical about certain moments being cut for content reasons. Still it leaves me wanting more everytime I see it.

The Big Country: 8.5/10

Classic, epic, unconventional western. And fairly complex characters and motivations throughout. You get the first hint of this really early on, when Gregory Peck gets assaulted by a group of drunken cowboys, dragged behind their horse, etc., and just shrugs it off like it doesn't matter, with a smile on his face. Hard to imagine John Wayne doing that!

I recently re-watched 'Dark City' -- 8.5 / 10.

Love this film. Forget Inception.. this is where it's at. I recall appreciating it the first time, but not really being completely into it. Some of the obvious 'borrowing' grated on me. Second time around - & also after watching the bonus material on my copy (director / cast & crew interviews), I rediscovered the film from scratch, & saw it in a whole new light. This film is so layered, yet it's so relate-able at the same time. There are themes upon themes, but there's also a fundamental connection to the lead guy & his story.

Great cast - they all shined, & it being a primarily Aussie project is awesome. Filmed in my home town of Sydney no less. :rock Jennifer Connelly - wow. She is so lovely in this. I'm a huge fan of hers to begin with, but she has a quality that really suits these kinds of films, a certain vulnerability coupled with that allure of a classic screen beauty. Keifer Sutherland was so right for this movie too - perfectly cast as Dr Schreiber. William Hurt as the inspector, Rufus Sewell, Colin Friels, Richard O'brien - all brilliant.

Can't recommend this film highly enough. :duff

I really enjoy Crystal Skull, it gets a lot of overly-exaggerated criticism. It's not as good as the original movies (Raiders is one of the greatest movies of all time) but it is truly nowhere near as bad a film as some will try to make you believe. There's fun to be had if you relax and allow it!

Just watched Star Trek: Nemesis for the first time in years -- 7.5 / 10.

Ehh, it was serviceable. I'm finding that as the years go by, I'm appreciating ST more & more - & enjoying it. I've recently been reacquainting myself with TNG, & I'm loving that obviously. I own TOS but haven't gotten through all of it just yet.

Yeah. Young Tom Hardy as the villain, it was alright. I'd forgotten most of the events in this film which was funny, but it allowed me to approach it with fresh eyes so to speak. One thing that doesn't need saying really, is that the TNG films really were just extended TV episodes - production values & all.. which isn't a bad thing I guess. These films aren't necessarily for your average popcorn muncher though. Ideally, you need actually to be interested / a fan to begin with.

The Data / B-4 subplot was mildly entertaining, but dull. Deanna Troy however, is not dull. What a beauty Marina Sirtis was!!

Anyway - last TNG film, Stewart was already well into Xavier mode, & another ho-hum tale or war & peace.

Pretty cool, in a boring kind of way.

Bourne Trilogy- 8/10 THAT'S WHERE THAT THE SONG IS FROM! I've heard the closing theme for so many years, and searched for it for the longest time. I'm so glad I finally found it! Anyways, this is easily one of my favorite trilogies. I'm a big fan of hand to hand combat, so I really liked the action scenes. I guess the camera could be a problem for folks, but it helped immerse me more.

All Star Superman- 2/10 The animation is beautiful, but that's about it. Unfortunately, this movie embodies everything I dislike about the character. Or at least certain interpretations. Heck, everyone was awful in this movie. Lois acts like an annoying 14-year old and Lex is a whiny man-child with a chip on his shoulder. I just feel like this movie was a disjointed mess. I know it's unpopuar, but I really hope they do something about the secret identity in the new BvS movie. The guy has every power in the world, the woman of his dreams, near-invulnerability, a great job that his powers make easier, doesn't need to pay for any of the insane damage he does to the city, and he doesn't even need a real secret identity.

Justice League Throne of Atlantis- 5/10 Aquaman is done really well here, and I really enjoy his Atlantean universe. However, the villain is pretty bland, and I dislike this incarnation of the Justice League. However, I at at least got through it, unlike Justice League War. The Suicide Squad movie was great, so I'm really disappointed in this one.

Minority Report- 6/10 It's very cliched and has a lot of leaps in logic, but it's fun!

Oooh that's a big swing and miss, the movie is an incomplete adaptation of the story sure, but the parts that do make it into the movie aren't badly adapted, all characters are perfectly represented, I'm sorry, but you clearly don't understand Superman and don't seem to know much about him by the way you seem to think he doesn't need a secret identity and such, I have no idea what you expect from him, maybe Sentry is more up your alley.

Interstellar: 8/10

I still have to really digest it and reflect on it, but I liked it for the most part. I thought they rushed through the end, and rushed through a few little details like the whole equation thing. They kinda quickly explained what it was when they first mentioned it, but I guess I didn't fully "get" it at that point and hoped they would bring it up again later. They did, but very vaguely ("We have to solve the equation! The equation holds the key to the survival of mankind!"). Eventually I kinda figured it out but I think it was an important plot point that should have gotten a little more explanation. And the definitely rushed (or glossed over) what they found to answer the equation. They could have trimmed a bit more from the farm stuff and given the time to explain the science stuff more thoroughly.

Oh, and the robots freaked me out. They were awesome, but they were freaky.

I think I liked Inception better.

Such an underappreciated film, surprisingly overlooked during awards season. :ohbfrank:

Did you seen Prisoners? He's been one of my favorite actors since Source Code. Still need to see Nightcrawler.
