About a year ago, I watched about 6 episodes of Season 1 and gave up. Literally everyone will tell you the same thing, this show didn't find it's footing until Season 2. So glad I gave it another chance thanks to the marathon on Esquire. As someone else said, where The Office got more annoying and characters became less interesting as the show progressed, this was the exact opposite. It just kept getting better.

Exactly the same. After those 4 episodes, I just felt a lot was forced and just not my thing. Honestly, I think I would have hated it a bit more if I didn't know about Ansari and Poehler, eventually including Plaza, Pratt, and Offerman. I was bored on Netflix, and decided to give it a go; plus I've seen a lot of dark stuff, would've been nice to get some comedy.

Office to me will always be great, up until Carell's departure. I don't mind Helm, but I'll pass. Office did just get annoying in time and a lot of their stuff kind of brought out some typecast for some things, like Wilson's current "Backstrom". Yeah, what is that?

Parks is a new favorite easily. So glad to give it that same chance. :duff

Yeah, I had free HBO for a weekend so I DVR'd it. It doesn't get better by the end. The whole concept is just so stupid. The trailers make her seem like she's "The One" like Neo or something but when you watch the movie you find out that the government is terrified of her because she has the ability to be a teacher, doctor, policeman, lawyer, or social worker. Oh noes! She's all powerful! Huh?

So she's going to use her power of choosing what she wants to be when she grows up to take over the world? Okay. :cuckoo:

That's exactly what I was thinking--I was expecting something more exciting than "you can be whatever you want when you grow up". I can't believe they're making more of them.

It's not even like she's "SUPER Career Woman!" Okay so she can be one of five things. Compared to our current society where any man or woman can choose between hundreds of vocations. But apparently you're a freaking ninja in the future if you can flip burgers AND file paperwork in an office somewhere. I can't believe it's a real movie.

Well, the talk on the Alien thread made me want to see this movie. What the ******. Overall it wasn't that bad, but the end? awful, after all she has done... ugh it felt like a big cliche.

It was fantastic. There were some surprisingly funny moments, which was good because his physical deterioration was heart-breaking to watch. Redmayne did a great job. There were a few moments in which I was pulled out of the movie a bit because I saw him instead of Hawking but there weren't many. That part was absolute Oscar bait and he pulled it off.

Watched Fury recently aswell. Good, but that final battle seemed a bit unnecessary in the context of the story. Did I miss why it was important to defend that area which was seemingly abandoned and was just somewhere they happened to run over a mine while on their way to somewhere else?

Yeah, he did have plenty of humorous moments. And just the timeline of his body's breakdown had me balling. It really did pull some heartstrings seeing him do that; especially when he was unable to climb up the rest of the stairs during that dinner, and his son is witnessing it all. Redmayne really did deserve that Oscar, he did a phenomenal job especially in that end conference scene. Just wow!

What Riddick said. Also:
Yeah, Pitt did seem to get them killed; but it was out of duty and the fact that he has a grudge against the SS. I believe that is the reason that kind of forced him to stay through it. Naturally though, it was a bit of what you said about the mine. They had to continue going forward, it just happened to be a location nearing their designation, and unlucky coincidence.

Actually when you said "TMNT" did you mean the CGI flick where that's the official title? I guess I assumed you meant the new one with Megan Fox. I have no idea whether or not the cartoon one is any good.

I heard the CGI one was good to an extent of a Turtle film. I did like the new one, obviously not perfect; but decent.

I just saw this and think I rate it about the same. Was OK, but nothing to write home about. Revenge action movies can be fun though, and this was that in certain parts. Love the idea of Lester Freeman from the Wire as a hired assassin though. They should make that it's own movie. And Lt. Daniels was the hotel check-in guy, while Al Swearengen owned the hotel.

There was something anticlimactic about it, imo. The action was pretty good. Reeves had some great moves in the film and can still pull off the action scenes, but there was nothing truly impressive or unique. I don't know, maybe we're jaded :lol

I do like the idea of the hotel/underground club for assassins . It was like a different world, a neutral place where all the professional killers know each other, even if they're enemies. A sort of Casablanca...but for killers, never seen that before, and they should definitely expand that element in the sequel. Maybe there are more neutral places like that in other cities and countries. I can just imagine a situation where Wick and some other great assassin are fighting and trying to kill each other, and Wick goes into the Hotel/Club as a last resort to take a timeout, and he and the other killer sit and have coffee and talk while they're there, like Pacino and Deniro in Heat.

Saw two worthwhile movies this weekend -

John Wick - 8/10. Perfect vehicle for Reeves. Great action, solid plot, simple revenge flick done right.

Kingsman - 8/10. Tarantino meets Bond. Well thought out, solid pacing, great acting, and excellent action. I'm not sure Jackson was the best person for the villain, as he tended to pull me out of it any time he was on screen, but the rest of the cast was terrific.

because it seems to me Pitt got almost his entire crew and himself killed because he didn't want to abandon a tank

It was mentioned when the tank platoon set off that there was no immediate reserve and if the crossroads wasn't held then it would allow the Germans to get into the Divisional rear area (where the hospitals, Q-stores etc are) and run amok unopposed. Pitt had to hold it until more troops could arrive.

It's a bit flimsy (I'd use a lot more than a tank PL for rear-area security) but a reason is given.

**EDIT** seeing as this is the thread for it:

Fury - 8/10. Really enjoyed it and thought it was a good take on a WW2 movie. Look very good as well. Yeah bits of it are very unbelievable, but I thought it did a better job of showing what combat is like than many other films.

Sin City 2 - 6/10. Looks awesome (as did the first) and I'm glad I bothered to watch it but the stories just weren't that excitingly told. Needed to be made within 4 years of the first. Good to see that if nothing else Jessica Alba can dance :)

Thanks for that, and for the other responses I got from RIDDICK and CallMeTheDoctor.

Yep, guess I just missed it. I'd have to agree then with what I've seen said about it, best war movie since Saving Private Ryan.

This was a nice film. Really wide range of emotion and just a fantastic story. Some moments I felt they could have done better with Renato, but Malèna was just a beauty. Monica Bellucci was wonderful and certainly beautiful. It's a great spin of what often people associate as negative like homelessness and such.

I saw that in the cinema back in the day, & it was kind of forgettable then really. Sure, the 'leg cross' scene has been used & parodied ad nauseum to date, but ehh.

Jeanne Tripplehorn (what a name) was the best thing about that film, & she barely got time.

Yeah I saw am article about top 10 crazy characters and saw this on it. It mentioned the leg cross scene but I never knew about it beforehand. Yeah I don't see it as very impactful, but then again 92 was a different time. What's to stop someone on just going on a porn site now to then? I thought it was fun and gritty, a different pace from animation films. :lol

Jeanne was fantastic, though her character was annoying sometimes. But she was fantastic, and underrated; but it was her debut so there is that.

18 years and I finally get around to seeing this movie. Great tension throughout, especially in the third act. Kind of fun to go back in time to watch a 90's Tarantino film for the first time. I actually watched it over two nights because I didn't find the first hour very compelling. Second night I got to all the money exchanging sequences and I ended up really liking how it all came together. I liked how the violence just kind of happened without warning throughout. Created a pretty palpable aura of tension for me.

Quentin obviously really likes Dirty Mary Crazy Larry. The girls talked about it in Death Proof and then it was on TV in Jackie Brown. It's available to stream on Netflix if anyone hasn't seen it. Pretty fun chase movie, though not as hardcore as what I remembered from watching it as a kid.

I didn't dislike the Ripperoos, they were funny, but I think they just took the movie in the wrong direction.

I like that in the beginning there's a more serious, dangerous world with Tank girl who's the complete opposite of that with her comical crazyness, and there are these random adventures and interesting characters that don't take up too much time or focus from our main girls. Then it's like the whole movie flips around and we now have a serious and focused plot (Taking out Water & Power), and what was once a seemingly "dangerous" world goes completely bonkers when we're introduced to the scary and mysterious Rippers, who turn out to be weed-smoking mutant Kangeroos.

I don't think I've ever seen the Tank Girl actress in anything else, but she did a fantastic job in this role IMO and I couldn't get enough of her. The Rippers took too much screen time away from her.

Tank Girl was Lori Petty, Keanu's girlfriend in Point Break. She was also in A League of Their Own.

It's almost like the movie was the "anti-Sucker Punch," with this harsh and morbid landscape juxtaposed with this totally chipper and energetic girl. Hell it even had some of the same Bjork songs as Snyder's movie (though they were new when Tank Girl came out.) The 90's were a decade of either darkness and depression (Batman Returns, Alien 3) or futuristic movies that were pretty much campy parodies of the "future" of previous decades (Waterworld, Judge Dredd, Escape from LA, Starship Troopers) until The Matrix turned things around and made sci-fi cool again. Tank Girl came out smack dab in the middle of all the "junk" and I see now that it would have been a total breath of fresh air.

It was edgy, comedic, AND cool. A rare combination for that decade.

Tank Girl was Lori Petty, Keanu's girlfriend in Point Break. She was also in A League of Their Own.

Whatever the faults of "Tank Girl," lack of ambition is not one of them.

Here is a movie that dives into the bag of filmmaking tricks and chooses all of them. Trying to re-create the multimedia effect of the comic books it's based on, the film employs live action, animation, montages of still graphics, animatronic makeup, prosthetics, song-and-dance routines, models, fake backdrops, holography, title cards, matte drawings and computerized special effects. All I really missed were 3-D and Smell-O-Vision.

Enormous energy went into this movie. I could not, however, care about it for much more than a moment at a time, and after a while its manic energy wore me down. Director Sidney Lumet has a new book out about how to make movies. In it he observes that slowly-paced scenes can actually make a movie seem to go faster than a relentless pacing that never stops. Uh-huh.

Also, Courtney Love as music consultant. :lol

karamazov80

If Sidney ****ing Lumet says something, then other filmmakers should listen IMO.

I once saw briefly well known rapper Mystikal stepping over some horse manure, and making a lame joke about it to his entourage. I also once saw the guy who played the senator from X-Men walking down Frenchman Street in New Orleans with Nora Dunn from Saturday Night Live. I'm about 80% sure I also saw Jeremy Piven once proudly walking down the street with two hookers. Pretty crazy to think back on how much star power I've been exposed to.

"Everything and the kitchen sink" actually worked for this movie. An hour into the movie they do a musical number. At no point was it a musical before that moment. So absurd and unpredictable. Is that how I want most movies to be made? Of course not. But for this one it was fun.

Why would anyone expect (or even want) a Sidney Lumet approach to a film called "Tank Girl." :lol

The point wasn't that it should be helmed by an accomplished dramatic director, but that a style of pacing can have certain effects on viewers. Opening to Once Upon a Time in the West is extremely slow paced and methodical. But it goes by in no time. That movie with Jason Statham being hopped up on adrenalin often felt like it was never going to end. Of course, there were other reasons for that, but pacing played into it.

Apparently I was quite the idiot while watching CHAPPiE. I had read that Sharlton Copley had done a really good job in the film and so the whole movie I was waiting for him to appear. About an hour in, still no Copley and I thought "wow, he's gonna have to have one heck of a scene stealing cameo. Or maybe I've already seen him and he so transformed himself that I didn't notice?" I kid you not. I found myself wondering if he was one of the rival gangmembers or something. Then when the film ended I figured I had just misread whatever I had seen prior to the movie and then his name appeared first in the credits.

I was all "What? Well then who--Ohhhhhhhhhhh." :slap

Cinderella (live action): 6.5/10

Well done for what it is. Fairly faithful to the cartoon, and not a "re-imagining" like we see with a lot of this stuff nowadays--i.e., Wicked, Maleficent, and that means it's good for kids, but makes for a fairly mundane movie, story-wise. Funny seeing Robb Stark once again putting his own selfish, romantic desires ahead of the needs of his people. Though it seems to work out better for him here, and the guy who was thinking about the good of the kingdom (the Duke played by Stellan Skarsgard) gets lumped in with the evil stepmother and banished from the kingdom!

I fell asleep 3/4 into it actually. The set up was breakneck, forgettable characters that you don't care about, video game sfx, a good Aussie actor that has to be an American of course, & what little suspense there is, feels like a bad bottom tier B movie. Sure, I didn't catch the end (I'm assuming it enters the dog & runs away..) but not interested anyway. 'The things' that made Carpenter's film a classic, are emulated poorly in this utterly stupid prequel. They even add insult to injury & use Carpenter's great minimalist score in places where there's just zero tension.

It was on TV, otherwise I'd never watch it at all. :lol
