Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978) - *?* / 10.

First time watch.. yeah, I don't know. I guess I do like it, but I think I need to watch it again.

It has that Carpenter-esque slow burn thing about it - a great cast, plus the great old school practical creature effects etc.

Halloween: My favorite Halloween movie. Has been since I was a kid. But man is some of the dialogue from Annie and Lynda cringe worthy. "totally, totally, totally, utterly fantastic, speed kills":lol

Halloween 35th Anniversary blu ray. 9.5/10.

I love what they did with the colors of this movie. The transfer was color corrected and approved by the film's Director of Photography Dean Cundey himself.
The neighborhood in which the movie took place, was shot in sunny Pasadena, CA. A few minutes away from where I grew up as a child.

The original movie showed bright green trees/leaves throughout and a very warm presentation. Well, the movie takes place during Autumn and Cundey finally made right on the colors and brought a more natural look. There's a more brownish-tone and oranges come through a little more, conducive to this time of year.

The movie isn't razor sharp and it was never intended to be. It still retains a little blurriness and grain you'd come to expect for a film produced in 1978.
Overall, a fantastic transfer, very iconic and memorable soundtrack, and what I think is the best release of this movie to date. Oh, and the story f-cking rocks too! :rock

But when you read about how viewers back then were walking out of the theaters (movie hasn't finished), people throwing up and even some fainting, you just know this movie was ground-breaking. :lol

Richard Smith(may he RIP) did a fantastic job turning young Linda Blair into the demonic figure we've come to love/hate. He's the lead crew in the make-up and special effects for the movie.

Thanks for the memories Richard and for the many sleepless nights you induced on many of us. LOL!

Totally - it's an amazing film, & I have actually seen it a few times over the years. The very 'first' time, was in high school - early 90s. I watched it after school with a couple friends at someone's house, & it had no impact on me, for a few reasons I think. a) I wasn't alone, b) it was a crappy VHS copy, c) it was the old theatrical cut I'm pretty sure, so no extra stuff - & d) they were laughing & poking fun at certain scenes so I didn't get the intended experience. After that, it might've been on TV or something, & I probably watched it intermittently that time.

Fast forward five or so years later, & the special edition was released in all it's restored glory (for the time). Again - with a couple friends, only this time we actually sat down quietly &.. watched it. Properly. With all those extra bits. It floored me.. & I think we all kinda felt that way that day. :lol

You know NOW though, it may be different. I could well see it & not be anywhere near as affected, but anyway. Horror films don't bother me normally - except for a small few. I went through a stage in the 90s, where I was on a mission to see every notorious horror film I'd missed out on or heard about as a kid, & most were either funny, stupid, or cheap - but a few lived up to the hype.

I'll say this though, in the last decade or so I've seen a bunch of the new-Gen horror stuff - & it's an extremely lame shadow of what film makers were doing in the 70s & 80s. They have to resort to stuff like SAW, HOSTEL & Human Centipede to even try & come close to pushing any kind of envelope; basically to disgust rather than entertain. I respect good film makers & their work - regardless of the genre within reason, but the world of film certainly isn't what it used to be in a lot of ways.

I just finished watching Winter's Bone. I thought it was very good, 7/10. I've never seen Jennifer Lawrence on screen before as I have no interest in Battle Royale with Cheese or that awful looking Hollywood take on depression that is Silver Linings Playbook. But with Playbook it doesn't help that I'm not a big fan of Bradley Cooper either. But she really is quite brilliant in Winter's Bone & I can she why she's Hollywood's hottest property right now.

I do want to see American Hustle though. & yes, I know I'll have to endure Cooper in that. :)

Actually you'll have to endure Jennifer Lawrence in that, she was easily the worst part of the movie.

I liked Winter's Bone too, it was a refreshing change to the usual kahkah that American cinema is plagued by.

JL gave a great performance in it, & so did the rest of the cast. Some confronting themes with a genuinely bleak vibe to it all.

I'll have to watch it again soon.

I used Chrome for easy translation. Came to $33 USD which is as good a price as you could expect if Disney released it here. Otherwise you're looking at $50 or more if you buy it off ebay.

For any in the US who also want Frozen in 3D you can pick it up here: Sanborns en Internet - -Frozen: Una Aventura Congelada Bd3D (http://www.sanborns.com.mx/Paginas/Producto.aspx?ean=7509656304874)

Disney has been doing that a lot lately, not sure what their strategy is, outside of irritating consumers.

Perhaps they believe they can make more money by rereleasing the 3D version in theaters or as a stand alone disc later?

Khev
11-05-2014, 11:30 AM
Right now Disney is treating 3D as a "theatrical perk" like IMAX in the US for their straight studio releases (starting with Frozen.) Marvel and Pixar still get 3D on US blu-rays (thank God) but nothing else. Frozen, Maleficent, Planes: Fire and Rescue, Big Hero 6, and so on only get 3D at home outside the country.

Speculation is that since they already overprice their regular blu's that they don't want to bother upcharging 3D even further for a possible limited return. Who knows. Its stupid.

Some of Maleficent's panoramic country/kingdom shots were absolutely stunning in 3D in the theater so there's no way I'd settle for the domestic 2D blu.

I can't stand people that some people don't think a movie can be rated a perfect 10. I remember Roger Ebert giving films four states all the time. He and Gene Siskell gave things two thumbs up. I guess those were all wrong and should have all been 3.5 stars or only one thumb up?

True, a movie may not be perfect, but can't we overlook the flaws and just enjoy them 100%? Here are the first things that pop into my head as perfect 10s.

Star Wars - 10/10

I can't stand people that some people don't think a movie can be rated a perfect 10.

Please reread my horribly constructed sentence and strike out the first "people." I can stand you but I do grow tired of coming in here and seeing the constant picking on 10/10 ratings. Movies are meant to be enjoyed. The cynical attitudes people have on the internet towards movies (and to the overpriced collectibles that we buy) is growing old. What would you rate Jaws if not 10/10? I assume that is your favorite movie since you brought it up. What moments of that movie pull you out of your sheer enjoyment and make you realize it's not perfect? All the movies I listed are perfect in the sense that when I put them in and rewatch them countless times, I never grow bored and I'm always captivated by what I see on screen. Does that mean there should be no criticism of movies or low ratings? Not at all. You'll notice that I left RotJ and TDKR off my list. Those are great movies to me but there are some things I do take issue with that do make me roll my eyes that I wish they'd done differently.

I didn't mean to push your buttons either but I feel every time I pop into this specific thread (which is not as regularly as other threads on SSF), someone is criticizing someone's 10/10 score. I just don't get that. :dunno

VintijDroidGutzz
11-07-2014, 11:41 AM
So my consolation is that 'you can stand me'? At least no one can say you're not a seasoned diplomat. :lol

Anyway, all good. As I pointed out in not so many words earlier, I was just being conversational & pleasant, nothing more. I'm one of the nicer members around here; I avoid arguments wherever possible, & the extent of my exchanges are some light ribbing & sillyness. I thought maybe Chaserfan was going to hit me with a conversational type response.. hmm. Next thing, I'm being called the internet police & that I'm shining the flashlight on folks. Come on, FFS.. :lol

It really seems like you to have to tread on eggshells with some people.. why? I know context can be lost in type sometimes - but really, there are understandably ambiguous 'were they being cool or having a dig?' type posts - & there are obvious obnoxious quips.

I don't know, the art of conversation looks like a dying art on internet forums - you're either labelled a troll, a mini mod, or a cupcake. :huh

I can't stand McConaughey, but after True Detective and Mud, I'll give him another chance.

Aside from Matt :lol I have 3 films!

Gone Girl: 9/10

Holy ****. Seriously, this movie is so good!!! Honestly Affleck was great (which helps to feel comfortable in him being Batman :lol). Overall story was great, some little side plots and such that honestly I feel were pointless, but the overall end game was great. The soundtrack was great as it really played on the story and was befitting to the film. Can't go much into details cause of spoilers, but a film I certainly recommend.

Fury 8.5/10

Another great film. I think people went in this typecasting everyone, Shia being Witwicky of Transformers and being useless, Pitt being Aldo Raines once more, Bernthal being Shane; a surviving prick, and Pena the usual pointless character. Certiainly was not the case when I got out. The amount of emotion and physical strain of brotherhood and death on these guys was phenomenal. I truly enjoyed every second, and showed how much those guys had to endure. Overall display of actions and authenticity were right on the money. I recommend for those that want to get as close to Saving Private Ryan as possible.

Big Hero 6 9.5/10

Wonderful film! A great family watch, but the innuendos bravado by Disney were exceptional. Overall story was a bit predictable, but none the less it had its twists and turns. The characters themselves are relatable and depicted by such great voice actors/actresses. Another for the books in Disney!

I will however be buying all these films day 1! :rock:rock:lol

Like others have mentioned, Interstellar is a love it or hate it movie for most.

Now that you mention it, Chaser, I do find it funny that people go see movies knowing full well they dislike the main actor, director or whathaveyou and then post a bad review. It's like bashing a particular Sushi bar you went to when you don't like raw fish to begin with. :lol

I expected it to be good from the trailers. But I didn't end up liking it at all. Not everyone has to be in love with a film you loved you know.

And I don't expect them to. It's just the way you described Nolan as the "one of the most overrated directors in cinema history", that made it look like you went into the film knowing you were not going to enjoy it.

Prometheus - 7/10

First tine watching this. Really liked the first half but once she got pregnant it went kinda all over the place.

Wasn't a fan of Holloway the hunky guy who somehow was the only one to be infected and had to have the obligatory topless abs scene for modern blockbusters. Shaw was okay but kinda wooden, David, Jarek and Vickers were the best characters.

Quite confusing. With Alien we didn't know where the aliens came from but we had a resolution with this it was left to open-ended and got too into the creation message and there were lots more unanswered question like what infected holloway?

From what I understood the Engineers created mankind then decided to create a bunch of biological weapons to unleash on mankind but were killed by those creations. But it's never explained why they wanted to destroy mankind.

The fast-track pregnancy was really poor as was the convenient surgical machine that was for some reason only programmed to work on men despite being owned by a woman and then the Alien was just left in there with no care at all.

I figured they hired Guy Pearce to de-age him later but since they killed him they should've just hired a more natural looking elderly man.

This last bit is more Of a pet-peeve. I font get other than to be all modern and fancy that they had the technology of this movie more advanced than the tech of the future movie Alien. They could've went lo-fi just as easily.

Well, it was programmed to work on men for Mr. Weyland, not for Vickers, and Shaw left the Alien there because she was in a hurry, no?

I figured they hired Guy Pearce to de-age him later but since they killed him they should've just hired a more natural looking elderly man.
Yeah, seemed unnecessary, the only use they gave to his younger self was the viral campaign.

In general, I think the movie successfully projected the big picture it tried to show, but it does have a lot of little brain farts that may not be plotholes, or small plotholes that ultimately don't really affect the main plot and message, they just make you facepalm often and take away from the rest of the craftsmanship.

It seemed to set up lots of questions to be answered in sequels. Personally I prefer movies that tell a complete story, having one or two minor things to expand on in sequels is fine but too much was setting up rather than crafting a complete story for this movie
