Funniest thing about A.I. for me..

Quite a few critics in America misunderstood the film, thinking for instance that the Giacometti-style beings in the final 20 minutes were aliens (whereas they were robots of the future who had evolved themselves from the robots in the earlier part of the film)

I thought they were aliens too. Either way it still makes zero sense. Horrible movie. :lol

Let's just split the difference and say 5/10, which is pretty much my feeling on Sky Captain. Had a lot of potential, but. . .

Rifftrax/Godzilla 1998 version: 6/10

Saw it last night at the theater. Pretty disappointing riff on this movie. It picked up a bit toward the end, but for the bulk of the film the jokes just fell flat.

"Bicentennial Man" is an adaptation of the original Hugo Award winning story.

That was my point, both are allegories of Pinocchio to a certain degree and both explore many of the same topics.

I haven't read the novel, but being Asimov, I doubt it's half as dull and sentimental as the movie.

Since I go to SDCC as press, I get a ton of links for various new shows and movies to watch and review, although that's not my thing. Maybe I'll incorporate that one of these days - no time now.

Anyway, most are pretty forgetable (I actually spent the 20 minutes watching a new 'monster hunter' show set in the bayou due this season...oh my god, it was bad), but I did watch the screener for a new horror movie called Mine Games, largely because it's directed and written by Richard Gray. Not heard of him? Not a big surprise. This was his first big film, although he had also done a romantic drama that came out of his Project Greenlight runner-up status. Mine Games was actually done in 2012, so I'm not sure what the delay has been, or why they are re-releasing it.

The only reason it's all worth mentioning is because he's the one doing the english version of Audition. I know a lot of us would like to see that movie handled well, so I thought it worth watching his earlier horror effort.

I'm not feeling warm fuzzies. Mine Games is an attempt at being somewhat unique, although much of it has been done before. It starts with the usual 7 dumbasses go out in the woods and people start dying, which is a formula I simply can't take seriously since Cabin in the Woods. He throws in a time loop to make things a bit more interesting (think Triangle), but muddies it all up with other red herrings like mental illness and physic visions. It ends up a pretty big mess by the end, like a bad M. Night movie.

What's weird is that this is a director with no real success yet - his Project Greenlight script is Summer Coda, that couldn't get to 60% on RT and has around a 5/10 rating on imdb.com, his second flick was Blinder that did a bit worse on imdb, and is at 0% on RT (with only 5 reviews), but yet managed to score another movie to be released this year with Gina Gershon and Justin Long called the Lookalike, has another in production with Momoa and Carey Elwes called Suger Mountain, and managed to score Audition. While the others aren't huge deals (hey, any movie is a huge deal for a director getting going, but you know what I mean), you'd think with the sort of reputation and following that Audition and Miike have, that someone with a bit better track record - particularly with horror - would have gotten the gig.

We'll see of course, but like I said, after watching Mine Games I'm not feeling better about this.

First Class is a good movie, and probably the most fun of the X-Men films, but you do realize it has a ton of problems right?

X2 and DOFP are better made films, they might lack some of the style that FC had but they more than make up for that with character development, acting, and focus.

Wow, they don't make 'em like this anymore and they probably never will. It's amazing that a movie of this genre was ever made with such high production values and was so hardcore with the sex and violence. And what a timeless score.

I thought it was interesting to notice that it beat ROTJ to the punch for what would eventually be some very iconic images.

the Momoa abomination. :monkey2

It really was an abomination too. You guys know how forgiving I can be for genres I like but damn, it was so bad that when I watched it on the DVR I ended up just fast forwarding to the end after about 20 minutes. When I saw how stupid the ending was I was glad I hadn't wasted my time watching the whole thing.

I just hate that all sword and sorcery films all want to be The Scorpion King with their stupid oiled bodies and crappy CGI. I can't imagine why so many people want to channel Steve Sommers instead of John Millius.

They went all out with the original Conan the Barbarian. Such massive set pieces were built, epic locations chosen for filming, hundreds of extras in any given shot, which of course all still hold up today because it was all "real." You really believe that you're watching an ancient fantasy world and not some dumb video game. And then there's that freaking amazing score. Too bad Millius never did any sequels (and I'm guessing he never will.)

Kinda scares me with King Conan. If they do wind up making it, Dino's long passed away, so I'm fearful most of it will be horrific green screen garbage like Hercules and the Clash of the Titans movies. :(

Yeah, I feel like the only way we'll get another "1982 Conan" is if a JJ Abrams type comes along and deliberately films it in a "retro" style. I wouldn't mind some CG in a new movie but they'd *have* to do it like Jurassic Park where you'd see CG for a wide shot of a monster but there'd still be a full size animatronic head for Conan to jump on or whatever. I love the slow moving snake that Arnold decapitates in the original. Now they'd have that snake whipping around like the stupid serpents in the Anaconda movies.

CTB is my my second favorite moive. Love it love it love it.

I dig Destroyer too.

And while it was not popular, Momoa's Conan was much truer to Robert E Howards. REH's Conan would not have been a slave for some 20 years and never would have wept at the foot of his enemy, as Arnolds did.

I pray to Crom that King Conan does not suck.

The Momoa Conan relied on CGI too much and the dialogue was ridiculous. He looked perfect as Conan though. It's too bad the movie was awful--I was really hoping they'd start up a new series of movies with a young Conan. Hopefully King Conan will recapture what made the Arnold movies awesome.

That ship has already sailed. We're only going to get more and more CGI, not less of it. Does anybody now if puppets and jerry-rigged special effects are still employed other than in zombie flicks/TV?

CGI is cheaper and it allows the director, every one of whom believes he/she is the second coming of Ra, to wield even more power and control in order to "realize their vision."

You don't have to deal with FX/prop guys (many of whom have a maverick, rebellious nature) when you can just order an obedient, compliant 25-year-old tech geek to write some code.

I don't think the CGI is cheaper, I think it's utilized for ease, that's why it's not rampant on TV, it's not affordable. There's some very good articles on Prometheus use of practical effects because they had to cut their CGI budget, ie. They couldn't afford the cgi. Unless I'm reading it wrong and you meant CGI is cheaper as in now compared to years ago, sometimes it's hard to get context in the writing.

Zero Theorem - Hmmmm/10

I really don't know how to rate this one, certainly not Gilliams worst (that distinction belongs to Tideland) but far from his best. Perhaps Gilliam was over-reaching, as the subject matter is ambitious yet so much in this film feels under developed. I'm a big fan of Gilliam, and I may not understand what he was trying to say, but for me, the end never really gelled as I hoped it would, and the point remains somewhat obfuscated to me.

I'm surprised mine is the first review on this site, I am curious to hear what others thought about it.

This movie is available On Demand, not even sure if it is playing in any theaters yet.

Edit-If your a Gilliam fan, it's worth watching, I just cant figure out a number to assign to it, have to think about it some more.

I'm sure good CGI is expensive. But, in general, wouldn't it be more expensive to hire dozens of good, experienced, FX guys, and then countless others to build sets and create props? Never mind the issues of creative control, etc.

The argument may be moot anyway. Most movies, at least the ones that matter, do a bit of both. It's rarely either one or the other, unless you're talking about a cheesy SyFy broadcast or a Random Horror Movie of the Week.

See you did it the right way! I watched them all within three days, and I think that's what burned me out. The last half of Before Midnight was excellent, but I really got sick of all the sex jokes in the beginning, and felt like there was a big disconnect from what I knew of these characters. Before Sunset was incredible in it's predictability. I could not believe how spot on the dialogue was! Not that I'm a wordsmith, but it felt beat for beat like so many conversations I've had, and continue to.

I'll give it another shot!

You know, I get that everyone is a critic nowadays and everyone has the right to express their opinion, we all do on this thread, but tonight I saw something that really bothered me. I went to Rotten Tomatoes and saw that Terminator 2 (my favorite film) drooped 6%. It went from having a 98% critics approval to a 92%.

What's interesting is that the negative reviews are from this year or last year, which means that there all these ****** new "critics" judging older films that they probably liked 24 years ago :lol Here's the guy's review where he not only calls the film foolish but he also insults the original film...but for some reason he didn't give that one a negative review :lol Man, some people should not review films...

Oh and I give T2 10/10...saw it tonight :lol

Captain America TWS: 7.5/10 Need to watch this again. I liked the content, but didn't love all of the direction. The slow-motion stuff at the end seemed way overdone for me. Felt like I was watching a tragic scene between 2 embattled lovers.

I was waiting to put my scores for movies after I saw them on Blu Ray/DVD, but I can always change my score later on. I'm sure they'll change later on, because I have a difficult time being in theaters.

Winter Soldier- 6/10 I loved the first half, but got bored by the plot and series of fights. I wish they would have released everyone's search history on Google or something, and caused mass chaos that way, instead of being extremely safe. I'm sure everyone's parents have brought up how the modern world is so loose with their personal information in far greater detail than this movie. I also want to know these characters limits, because I felt like I was watching a video game, with the characters not having that much weight to their blows. Once Abed showed up, I was completely done with the movie. No offense to that actor, but I can't stand that character he plays, and he's all I could think of while watching the rest of the movie. Captain America is my second favorite superhero, and I am so happy with how Chris Evans is portraying him. Heck everyone's portrayal was good in the movie. Marvel has a really good casting director. My favorite scene of the movie was when Steve visited Peggy.

Grand Budapest Hotel- 8/10 I'm not sure how I rank this one among Wes Anderson's other movies, but it was a lot of fun. I'm going to check this out a few more times.

X-Men Days of Future Past 8/10- I'm glad that this movie provided roles for the actors, so they were able to deliver great performances. The "Where were you, Charles?" scene is one of the greatest comic book movie scenes yet. I don't know about Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique though. I felt like I was watching the actress more than the character, but she was still fine. Like many, I was pleasantly surprised by Quicksilver. He was fantastic, and I was really sad that we got to spend so little time with him. Thankfully he was well utilized, which has been a big criticism of mine of the previous X-Men movies. That actually hurt the movie for me, since I didn't care about the characters dying in the future. It was like when Cyclops died in the third movie. Why did fans get upset? He wasn't even a character. Anyways, I'm really looking forward to Apocalypse so we can take a break from the mutant discrimination pity party!

New movies I watched:

Once Were Warriors- 10/10 Incredible performances. This movie was really tough to get through, but I was so invested in this family that I needed closure. I was originally going to give this a 9/10, but saw that I gave A Streetcar Named Desire a 9/10, and I believe this was better. The character Jake Heke was really reminiscent of that Brando's character, so that's why I'm comparing them.

Avatar- 4/10 I don't understand why this movie has gotten so many great reviews. I never watched it because my friends called it a "pass" when they watched in the theater. So derivative.

How is Dane Dehan as Emo-Parker as Harry >>>> James Franco's Harry?

It's my opinion. :) I liked James Franco as Harry, but I'm judging Dane Dehan's first appearance as Harry on film and James Franco's character in the first Spiderman movie, not the trilogy. As a character, Franco's version has the advantage of being in 3 films, but if you judge him as a character solely on his role in the first film, Dehan, imo, was more interesting, he played a more significant role, and I think his acting was better than Franco in SM1.

The Sam Raimi films are better. There's no question that ASM2 rushed the green goblin character and even Harry's relationship with Peter Parker, but as bad as it was, I thought Gardfield and Dehan's chemistry was good. I also think they are both better actors (in this film) and have a better understanding of the characters than Tobey and Franco did in the original film.

I don't think Dehan was Emo at all...he was dying. What was Franco's excuse? :lol

Genome Hazard - 9/10

This one's a psychological thriller, with joint production from South Korea and Japan. The story is very confusing at first, but the pieces really fit together nicely as the main character solves the mysteries behind his identity. I watched it for free on Drama Fever a few hours ago - here's the link:

But, as word of caution: if you happen to watch it, DO NOT read the summary from Drama Fever - spoilers abound.

Dallas Buyers Club 6/10. Eh. It wasn't terrible. I don't usually bother with AIDS movies, but it was on TV, and I like McConaughey, so I gave it a shot. True story of a straight guy that gets HIV in the 80s, given 30-days to live, and sets-up an underground pill-club to sell non-FDA approved HIV drugs to AIDs patients ... pissing off doctors and the Feds in the process. Interesting enough story -- I didn't know of the existence of a black market for unapproved medications. It was a strangely libertarian movie, actually ... a guy fighting the government to take and sell potentially dangerous, potentially life-saving drugs they haven't approved.
