I can't stand Melanie Griffith - but she's quite good in this. Great cast actually; Kevin Spacey makes a great yuppie. :lol

Mannequin is cool as a cheesy '80s movie, but objectively, it's pretty terrible. I prefer Weekend at Bernie's :D

Gravity: 7/10

Really exceptionally made movie. My wife said the director won best Oscar, and I think he, or he and the cinematographer anyway, deserves it from the movies I've seen from the last year. Bullock did a pretty good job, as well.

Salo, or 120 days of Sodom - 5/10

So I watched this to see what was what.

I found it to be more unsettling and dehumanising rather than shocking. The bulk of the shocking scenes were in the last ten minutes but up to that point it was more a movie about degradation, humiliation and the perversions of sexual taste.

It was interesting how it was told from the antagonist perspective and I feel in some way that robbed the movie of a connection to the victims outside of standard pity.

The ending was quite brutal and a little surprising as the leads had promised brutality throughout the movie but never displayed it as drastically before then with humiliation and mild injury being the most they dished out.

Agreed completely. It is a good film no doubt but all the accolades it got gave the impression it was something new...which it wasn't really. And it was internally repetitive too. Mistreatment by one owner/moves on to the next, Mistreatment by new owner/moves on to the next etc etc. We get the point, slavery was bad

It's not a work of fiction, the film is based on the memoirs of Solomon Northup. Whether you think that's repetitive or not, it's what really happened.

The Edge -- 8/10 (w/ Anthony Hopkins). Saw this when I was younger, and I guess I didn't get it. I remember it being alright, but mostly Lake Placid ... but with a bear rather than a crocodile. Having watched it again ... I was wrong. Its a pretty great rustic, survival movie. One of those manly 'break out of your shell' movies ... where a run of the mill guy gets tested to within an inch of his life.

I was expecting it to be some ground-breaking film with the most brutal and inhuman actions ever seen in cinema based on the reviews I read/heard.

People REALLY hyped this up for some reason. In the end, it was what it was. It was another slavery film with really good acting from most and some touching moments. There was nothing in the film that made me drop my jaw, stare in amazement, or want to revisit it in the future.

I believe I rated it an 8/10 after I saw it, which I still think is a fair rating. A much better than average film, but nothing phenomenal.

So, if the film doesnt shake you to your core with heretofore unseen or unimagined brutality, it is somehow falling short in your eyes? This isnt supposed to be gore-porn, your supposed to connect with the character on an emotional level, experience his loss, experience the degrdation of what he had to go through to simply survive and eventually reclaim. Yes, we all know about the brutaities of slavery, we have seen people being whipped over and over again on screen, but it's not about brutality for the sake of violence, it's about human beings robbed of their dignity and reduced in other's eyes as nothing more than cattle.

The filmmaker could have upped the ante with the violence and depravity to break through the average person's shell of desensitization, but I'm glad he didn't, because there is a point where that level of violence not only detracts from the story being told, but becomes cartoonish in it's own right.

It was a good film. I cared about the characters and what they were going through for the most part. It just could have been done better. I felt like I've seen this film a hundred times, and I've seen the impact of slavery portrayed better.

I did think the slavers/antagonists were a bit too "kind", but it would have taken a lot more than making them more brutal for me to be amazed with the film. And maybe that's just how they were supposed to be, based on the memoir(s). I wanted Solomon to make it home, and I thought the actor did a great job with what he was given, but I never really felt connected to him, nor did I feel a great amount of relief when he finally made it home.

Thats funny, what exactly am I a fanboy of?

Slave owners werent all bloodthirsty monsters, there were many that treated their "Property" with relative kindness, like Cumberbatches character, though they were obviously severely flawed in their participation in slavery in the first place. I look at this movie similarly to Schindlers List, in that it really didnt show us anything we didnt aready know, but it let us experience the horror with a compelling story, and put the main character in a position more people might be able to identify with, a free man losing his freedom.

But, no need to get your feathers ruffled. I do agree that the end was played more understated than many would like, but I don't need a movie to telegraph every emotion I am supposed to feel.

Carrie 2013: 7/10 It was a good, respectful remake, got some things right that the original didn't but missed the mark on some others that the original got right, Chloe Moretz was terrific in this, yet I keep thinking it was a bit of a miscast given how pretty she is, Julian Moore was also fantastic as Margaret White, no complains there, the prom scene + ending are MUCH better in this one though(except for the split second in which Carrie gets bathed in blood, that was better in the original), the black prom gives me goosebumps every time I watch it, the part when she starts to fly is just terrifying, the ending was stronger than in the original as well, the relationship between Carrie and Sue is one bit more personal and I liked that. Tommy Ross was awfully dull in this version while Billy Nolan was a bit more accurate, both Sue and Chris were a lot duller than in the original as well... The visuals were kind of unimaginative, just going through the motions, no interesting camera angles and stuff, but all that changes for the better as soon as prom starts.

Carrie 1976: 8.5/10 The visuals are eye catchy from the beginning, the tone is right for most of the movie, the cast is almost perfect and it does a great job, Sissy Spacek was brilliant as Carrie and she's had the right look, not accurate to the book, but that's not important, this version is superior to the remake for the most part, but the prom night + ending have been getting increasingly weaker for me since the remake came out, it's visually interesting, but in motion it turns out cartoony and a bit exaggerated in it's performances, and the final scene where Sue wakes up is just cheeeeeesy, but I still like both versions.

Although my dream version would be an amalgam of both, that would get a 10/10 out of me.

Anyway, doesn't belong here but:

Carrie (book) 10/10. My favorite Stephen King story.

Hobbit 2: Revenge of the Hobbit: 5.5/10

I can't believe how mediocre this movie felt, as I really enjoyed all the LOTR movies and even Hobbit 1. But it felt like everyone was totally just going through the motions. Peter Jackson relied on the old trick of old making the music stop for dramatic effect, then building up sweeping orchestral music after dramatic quote is made or action is taken about 500 times. The barrel ride was probably the worst part of the whole movie, as it felt like a total videogame, and there was zero tension. No tension in really the whole movie. Only part I enjoyed a little was Bilbo interacting with Smaug, but there was no real tension there, either. Disappointing.

Man of Steel - 4/10

My first viewing. I think all the negative thoughts on it are spot on. Snyder's creative direction was pretty awful, the CGI looked very cheap and washed out. The fight scenes were just as chaotic as any Transformers film and were so over the top, that I honestly couldn't really care what was going on. Cavill seemed very wooden to me as Superman, and no real emotional connection to him whatsoever. And the whole Independence Day vibe to me cheapened the film a lot. Overall, it came across as a Syfy original film with a gigantic budget.

Pretty much.
I usually enjoy watching Michael Shannon's roles, but even here, he doesn't come off as playing naturally. Some of his expressions, at times, aren't convincing and appear overly forced. :(

Yeah it is, I like the design of the Super Predators, I just don't like the idea of my beloved Jungle Hunter being the underdog, but it is a love letter to the 1st movie, I can always get behind that, it wasn't mindless fan service like the AVP movies.

Captain America: the Winter Soldier: 7.5/10

Very good. SO much better than the first one! In fact, it makes me more angry and annoyed at the first one that it couldn't be anywhere nearly as good as this one was, just in terms of having the audience care about the characters and character development and motivation. And the action was so much more interesting and felt much more dangerous and perilous. Ugh. That first one was just so bland and by the numbers. It felt like they were making it with a "how-to" book, hitting every plot point and motivation point, with none of it feeling genuine.

Anyway, this one was a vast improvement. Cap felt like a much richer character. The Falcon was also pretty good and they managed to flesh him out pretty well considering how quickly you got to know him. All of the supporting team was fairly well drawn out and felt like real people. Of course they left so much in the air and ready for the sequel or next Avengers, so it left you wanting more! And of course now I want the HT figures too!

Liked it better than Thor: Dark World but still liked Iron Man 3 better.

I personally wouldn't bother with Suits. I watched the first couple of seasons but dropped it this season (technically the second half of season 3). The first season is okay to pretty good while it's establishing the characters. But by season 2 it starts to get way too soapy and melodrama-y for my taste. Who is sleeping with whom, who wants to take over the firm, who's keeping who's secrets, who's mad at whom, and of course no one talks to each other so it's all just miscommunication. It was disappointing because the characters of Mike and Harvey are pretty awesome.

I've watched a bunch of movies in the last 2 months! 10 point scale for me.

Kindergarten Cop= 8 Never gets old for me, despite being derivative. A great blend of comedy, action, and drama.

The Fall= 9 Beautiful cinematography and great acting! The most "realistic" depiction of story-telling I've seen on film. Ethereal!

Usual Suspects= 9 On the first watch it was enjoyable, but is more rewarding on subsequent viewings.

Fight Club= 10 Oh I'm Heaven! Still my favorite movie!

Rear Window= 10 Mesmerizing! Stellar camera work, acting, and suspense!

Repulsion = 10 I never watched the Exorcist, but this is the only movie that freaked me out!

Se7en = 10 Incredible atmosphere!

Lost in Translation= 10 Without a doubt my favorite Bill Murray movie. Just an incredible emotional ride!

Matchstick Men = 9

Go!= 8

Bottle Rocket = 7

God Bless America= 5

End of Watch= 9

Take Shelter = 9

Session 9 = 8

Eastern Promises= 8

I've been watching a bunch of superhero movies lately!

Spider-Man 2= 9 Casting aside, this is the comic come to life, and hits every beat of why I love Peter Parker and his world so much!

Batman '89= 5 Great atmosphere and performance by Jack Nicolson.

Dark Knight Returns = 10

Superman= 7

Man of Steel = 8

Batman Begins= 10

The Dark Knight = 10

The Dark Knight Rises = 9

Batman Mask of the Phantasm = 10

Avengers = 6

X-Men= 7

X2 United= 8

Amazing Spider-man= 6 Great cast! I loved the new outfit and serious tone of movie. Peter and Gwen had great chemistry.

Captain America TFA= 7

Iron Man= 8

Iron Man 2 = 7

Iron Man 3 = 7

Just saw The Raid 2 and it was amazing! The fight scenes just kept going from strength to strength leaving me breathless at the end of the movie. However, the story did jump around a little bit but in all honesty plot takes a backseat to the action in a movie like this. 9/10

The Good Doctor - 7/10

An interesting and unsettling movie. Basically a junior doctor falls for a patient and when she gets better he walks down a path to insanity by poisoning her to have her back in his life.

What's interesting is she dies soon after

Not the a-typical thing to expect from a movie. After that he deals with a blackmailer over their relationship even though nothing really happened between them in a sexual sense.

The movie ends quit abruptly and suggests that this was a temporary insanity as he goes on with his life and career.

Wasn't an entertaining movie but more of an insight movie.

Robocop (2104)

I'm a hardcore fan of the original. Hated and despised the idea of the remake and felt insulted with the design of the suit. Watched the movie with low expectations and after half and hour or so quickly realized that it's doing it's own thing rather than trying to outdo or erase the original. So all in all, I can't believe I'm saying this, it's a GOOD movie.

7/10.

Yeah, I feel bad for spitting on the reboot because I hold the original so dear to me. Fact of the matter is, the reboot is the best thing to come out out of the Robocop name since the original spawned God awful sequels, cartoons, TV series, and even some crappy comics. I don't know how, but the reboot worked.

So yeah, I guess I have to eat crow on what I've said on the Robo boards.

Soooooo why exactly it's a good movie, beside that "it's different" bit?

It quickly deals with the fact that Murphy is a man trapped in a machine first, rather than a machine discovering he's a man like in the original. That different approach completely allowed me to let of go of any preconceptions and allow the plot to branch off.

Murphy wakes up as a man in this, while OCP desperately tries to make him a robot. I never knew that approach could ever work until now.

No memorable bad guys and a ton of stupid plot points ruined it for me. ED-209 looks ****, that Charles Kane criminal eluded police for 10 years but just shows up at a police station one day, and Murphy is in no way someone I can root for in this version. Even in the suit, Weller has tons of personality. What's his face in this new one was just like watching a dead fish. The plot also won't be remotely relevant in 20 years which is why I doubt it will hold up even to dvd/cable repeat viewing scrutiny. It definately strikes me as a movie that will only get worse with each new viewing.

That's like saying if you take out Spider-Man or Superman in their films, that the film will suck. They're the central characters, everything is revolves around them.

Exactly.
There's sooo little to the plot and it's sooooo boring and meaningless. 2/3 of the screen time you're forced to watch pretentious scenes like "he's made in China", "he's not as good as the actual machine", "he's not human any more", "we are immoral and greedy, but no one cares", "except cop's wife", etc
The most terrible thing is that Murphy was just a pathetic tool.

This reboot was as insulting to RoboCop as it gets... Except the social commentary from the "news", it was brilliant (but too brief).

I'm glad you guys enjoy your movies, but I think we are getting a tad heavy on handing out 8's, 9's and 10's.

I don't think many people use this thread as a place to objectively review films. Rather just to express in a number their level of enjoyment of a film. I'm sure I gave 10s to Predator and Aliens last year. Are they objectively perfect films? I don't care, they're 10s to me. Why would I go with a 7, 8 or 9 for a film that I love? Just because? I wouldn't even know what I'd be docking the marks for.

Btw, I just re watched Predator a few nights ago, first time in years. Could not believe how well this movie holds up. Fell in love with it all over again. I think sometimes I avoid older movies I love thinking I'll thrash them in my head, but all I kept thinking was, "why don't I have this in my time off rotation?"

I may love a movie, flaws and all, but that doesnt mean I really think that movie is a 10. To me, the purpose of rating/reviewing a film isnt so much to scream my love from the mountaintop, it's to help others decide if a movie is worth their time and money. Seeing so many 9's and 10's makes it hard to take this thread seriously.

It's actually not a tired story, you know how horror movies often use an exhausted trope filled story as an excuse for the jump scares? Well this isn't really super tired :lol and it's actually a bit heart touching, it's not devoid of jump scares, but none of them are cheap jump scares like in the Quiet ones or paranormal activity, it's worth a watch.

Perfection is relative, depending on what you're looking for and what you expect out of something it may or it may not be perfect, hence, rather than looking at the number someone gives to certain movie, you oughta look at who's posting it.

There are people here who I often agree with and other who I often don't agree with, that's how I know how accurate their scores are for me.

Besides, I doubt anybody here is a an actual scholar to provide a review not only of the artistic aspects but of the technical aspects as well.

I own a handful of good classics; American Werewolf In London, The Fly, A Nightmare On Elm street, Halloween, The Thing - etc, but I have a low tolerance for artless schlock. As far as the new era films - I haven't seen much. Del Torro's stuff is great, as are other some European ones, but I can't stomach any of those macabre Japanese ones - **** that. :horror :lol
