Blackfish - 6/10.

I've watched other Seaworld documentaries before, so this one didn't particularly blow me away like everyone said it would. It had a few things I hadn't seen in other documentaries, but everything else seemed rehashed. It was still worth a watch.

What I really liked about Wolverine was that it was a self contained story and didn't have anything but the Wolverine universe in it aside from the secret ending.

Agreed, with so mich universe building these days it felt nice to have a standalone story. Also liked how it was a personal story, not a big 'world is at stake' action porn spectacular.

I think context and ambiance really help when watching movies.
What year did you watch The Exorcist and who was watching with you?

I saw it for the very first time as a very young boy in the 80's, all alone, in my room. It was bedtime, of course, but that didn't matter. Couldn't sleep that night. :lol

I was watching the Lone Ranger while I wrapped presents the other night. Wasn't paying too much attention until the end. The last 30 minutes I thought were great. Too slow before hand but like I say I wasn't paying too much attention. Basically as soon as the Lone Ranger music kicked up was when I started paying attention.

007: Skyfall - 6/10: Skyfall had one of the more simplistic plot lines that I've seen of any Bond movie (and I've seen them all). It's not one of the best films in the series by far, but it's still enjoyable.

The Hunger Games - 5/10: I stayed away from this movie for the longest time, because I got such a Twilight-esque vibe from looking at the trailers. Until one of my friends practically begged me to watch it :lol. It has a good storyline, but it's a bit too PG-13 for my taste. Teenagers (and I guess, a minority of older folks) should enjoy it immensely.

Expendable 2 - 7/10: It wasn't as good as the first movie, but it was still awesome seeing the entire cast of old action stars on screen (including Arnold and Chuck Norris). First and foremost, this is an action flick, and it wastes no time with overly complex dialogs (eg. -"What's the plan?" -"Track 'em, find 'em, kill 'em"). The Expendables series excels as an art form of old-school violence and grit, and it serves as a solemn reminder that actors like Stallone, Arnold, and Willis are irreplaceable - in a time when metrosexual girly-men are preferred by Hollywood on the big screen.

Tin Tin - 9/10: I grew up reading the Tin Tin comics from Hergé, and needless to say, it's one of my favorite comics of all time. The movie exceeded all of my expectations. The characters were faithfully reproduced, and I'd love to see a sequel!

Oblivion

It starts very nicely, like a classic SF of old, welcoming viewers into its own interesting setting. Plus, I love all kinds of "I am Legend", last sentinel/lonely guardian type of stories and Tom Cruise's intensity comes into its own in those kind of roles. So when the movie began with shots of Cruise putting on a hat, holstering his pistol, slinging his rifle over his shoulder and going out into the field to work, I was 100% in. In fact, that's what the whole movie should have been about - two hours of Cruise riding on his white motorcycle around a SF, post-apocalyptic desolation, slowly uncovering some higher intrigue/plot. Unfortunetely as soon as Olga Kurylenko character is introduced, the whole movie turns into run of the mill, cookie cutter ****. Filled with stupidities, plot holes galore, cringe worthy dialogue and scenes, and just general shoddines. Plus the ending becomes a ridiculous mess of all kinds of SF tropes crudely mashed togheter. Overally though, I enjoyed it not only becouse of the good first half hour, but mainly becouse of fantastic, evocative visuals and music. Say what You will about Kosinski's writing skills, but he does know how to make a stunningly beautiful and visually evocative movies.

7/10

The Counselor

This movie is like an inbreed, retarted cousin of "No Country for Old Men", trying more or less to do the same things, but failing miserably in comparison. Its not as tragic as critics are saying, since I think most people didn't gave it a fighting chance becouse of its unwelcoming, nihilistic tone that doesn't vie for viewers sympathy (it can be quite emotionally moving becouse of its depressing ending), but overally its more miss than hit. And I am not sure if its the fault of McCarthy who might have lost his mojo here while switching from novels to screenplays, or is Ridley Scott to blame for taking Cormac's theatrical, pseudo-philosophical script and showing it as 100% literall, classical thriller (which doesn't suit it).

Yes man of steel was a great take on superman and it was very good but when you are listening to stuff you already know then it gets tedious.
I guess when it comes to films my expectations are high.
I never judge a book by its cover , as films people love could be horrible as we all have different tastes.
A guy in work pestered me to watch the usual suspects for months until I gave in and watched it , I loved it.

The Wolverine (Extended Edition) - 7/10

Bloody and brutal like Wolverine should be. The fights and deaths don't hold back. Did not like so much Jean Grey, and Viper hurt it alot for me. I didn't feel she was needed, if she had been a regular human scientist who was intelligent enough to build the SS suit and steal Wolverine's adamantium that'd have been enough. Didn't need the mutant angle as well. Other than that I quite liked it.

Honestly, personal preference. It's an incredible film, but, personally, I just prefer some of Scorsese's other work. I think The Depahted might be my favorite film I've seen of his. Everything hits perfectly. I think the "weakness" in Goodfellas is in its characters, which, honestly, isn't Scorsese's fault, since they're based somewhat on actual people, but there's just no connection. I feel nothing for Jimmy, Tommy, or Henry; they're all scumbags (brilliantly played scumbags, though). :lol

4/10 for great visuals and nothing else

Completely agree. Loved the visuals, and it was a great IMAX 3D experience for me, and then 20 minutes after the film, I completely forgot about it. I thought it was Cameron's worst film personally.

Going back to "The Departed," Martin Sheen has a line in that which sums up the characters in Goodfellas perfectly. "We deal in deception here, but what we don't deal in is self-deception." Part of what makes Nicholson's performance in that film so great is that he knows he's a piece of ****; he just doesn't care. I guess part of Goodfellas' genius is that it shows just how warped Hill's sense of reality is. It takes "glitz and glamor" to an entirely different level.:lol

Raiders of the Lost Ark - 10/10

My review is not why I'm really posting, but I showed the movie to my Brother-in-law, who is only 16 years old and has lived in Hong Kong for most of his life, I had my doubts as to whether he would even give the movie a chance. I was surprised, he really liked it and was sitting on the edge of the couch for most of the movie. The movie amost lost his attention during the boat scene with Indy and Marion in the cabin, but he was otherwise riveted throughot the film. He never once touched his ipad, which is a major accomplishment.

This coming from a kid who almost only likes X-Men/Wolverine movies. Maybe there is hope. ;)

13 Assassins - 10/10

I rarely give perfect scores to anything, but this movie ranks as one of the most well-scripted, action-packed Samurai films I've ever seen (and I've seen practically all of "Samurai Cinema").

It's an amazing, visceral tale of a group of Samurai who put everything on the line to kill the Shogun's brother - who is one of the craziest, most sadistic villains I've ever seen in a Japanese movie.

Bradley Cooper was the weak point in this movie. Recast his role and you could add another star to my score. Also, first half was a little flabby IMO (like Bale :D). Could've lost 20 minutes to speed it up some. Lawrence was ok, but not as good as hoped, but Bale and Adams were both simply perfect. Ending came a little fast, too. So yeah, for me a solid 7/10.

Fantastic film.

The only scene that I thought Miike took a bit too far was when you meet the women who had her family killed. When they showed a closeup of her and what they did to her, it seemed a bit unnecessary and gratuitous. I got the severity of the situation without needing that extra few seconds of disgustingness (new word). But I know Miike can't do a movie without making people squirm in their seats... :)

Assassination Of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - 10/10
Probably the best ensemble of acting I have ever seen. Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell all deserved Oscars.

Killing Them Softly - 8.5/10
A refreshing unique mob film. Very underrated. Pretty much a political allegory of the mob.

American Hustle - 7.5/10
Amy Adams and Christian Bale were superb. Bradley Cooper was funny, and Jennifer Lawrence was meh and her accent breaking was just terrible. Solid entertaining film.

Walter Mitty - 6/10

Beautiful picture w/o much substance.
I get that it's about being free-spirited and open to the world... But hammering all these simple yet big ideas into my head with a rock made of mostly retarded teenage humor and unrealistic story is too painful.

"The Secret Life" is inappropriate title since that concept was used only as a gag and left off in the middle of the second act.

King Kong (1976) - 5 / 10

Ehh.. I didn't hate it. Rick Baker handled the Kong suit etc, but despite good performances from Jeff Bridges & co, you couldn't suspend your disbelief for long enough, because as soon as the guy in the gorilla suit lumbered into the miniature set, you were on the floor laughing. It's like they didn't pay attention at all, to the correct anatomy / skeletal structure of a gorilla. :lol

Some of the close ups of Kong's face were cool though, like the parts where he was holding Jessica Lange in his hand & 'examining' her. The large animatronic arm & hand was quite mobile & dextrous too, for the scenes it was in, so kudos there as well.

The original 1933 film still leaves it for dead though - Kong 76 was a poor effort really.

Haven't posted in a while as I was in New York for Christmas! Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Anchorman 2 9/10 Just as good as the first one. Damn good!

:lecture What was your favourite line?

American Hustle

8.0/10

Very good- Jennifer Lawerence is wonderful. A tad long but really tremendous.

Glad to hear this is getting such good reviews, really looking forward to seeing this!

Saints & Soldiers: Airburne Creed - 8/10

Enjoyable low budget WWII movie.

Tanged - 9/10

Tangled is great! One of Disney's best movies!

Rocky Balboa - 8.5 / 10

Really enjoyed it! I loved the way they handled the whole film actually..

:exactly: This movie could've been embarrassing and bad, but it ended up being my 2nd favourote in the series after Rocky!

Wolf of Wall Street -10/10.

Hilarious and disturbing. I feel it's one of Scorsese's best films in years. Also, the writer of the film said that this is a Companion film to Goodfellas, and I can see why. The film has a similar type of narration and look at the Dark side of the American dream.

Really looking forward to this, Scorsese and DiCaprio can do no wrong in my eyes!

Saving Mr. Banks 9/10

This had a shockingly short opening in the UK, I missed it :(

Maybe there is hope. ;)

:clap Raiders is my all time favourote movie, glad to hear it has a new fan!

My god! How many taboos can you cross in one film without going to an R rating? :lol

I've been wanting to watch this one for some time, & finally did. Great subject matter - some really well done things in there, but it's not a film I'd watch twice. I guess it's not really trying to be anything more than a horror movie with a quasi message.. which is fine.
