The Dark Knight Returns (Deluxe). 10/10. One of the best of DCs animated. Extremely well done. Didn't care much for the Joker's voice. Liked Batman/Wayne's though.

It struck me how similar the mutant storyline was to The Dark Knight Rises. There are actually a couple of fairly minor points here that TDKRises could've taken from TDKReturns that would've made a big difference.

For instance, retired Bruce Wayne as daredevil rather than hermit would've been better for Rises. Have the cops force him into retirement a couple of years after the Dent incident -- and have him become a thrillseeker to fill the gap left by the absence of Batman. If you want him to start off injured ... start with the TDKReturns racing accident, and have the injury stem from that. Voila. That one change would've changed the feel of the 10-year gap completely.

I messed up big time :explode: the movie got a way low turnout and didn't even crack the top 3 on opening week---bad grandpa was numero uno, capt Phillips #2 and gravity #3---totally weird since this is Ridley Scott we're talking about here (Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner etc) and written by what many consider to be the world's greatest living novelist (Cormac McCarthy Pulitzer for The Road etc)

I hear this all the time. Disney / Pixar's greatness was in a time where there were few companies making CG feature films. movies. It was a new medium to tell stories. I will make the relationship with "American Idol". The first handful of seasons was fresh and new and enjoyable to watch. Then we were introduced to so many other "singing competitions" when the flavour of this new medium was becoming the norm and no longer a "event".

The best PIXAR movies are their first five: Toy Story 1&2, Bugs Life, Nemo and Monsters INC. (Finding Nemo being my all time favourite). Everything after was just another CG movie with the name of the first five movies behind it.

I honestly feel that they were running on all cylinders right up to Toy Story 3, with the only exception being the first Cars. The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up? All A++. It took an enormous nosedive with Cars 2, and Brave was just not up to full Pixar standards. I could have believed it was a Dreamworks movie.

Sadly I've been less than thrilled with the last now 3 Pixar movies. I'm afraid "mediocre" is now the norm for them. :(

I thought the visuals of Brave were well done. I think the story was aimed at a mother's bond which may have alienated some. I know it made it hard for me at first. But I think the art is great.

Cars 2 was crap. Planes ???? WTF. I have not even seen Monsters U.

I am hoping that Frozen is not like that. It looks fun and has a holiday feel to it even if not a holiday film.

Mad Old Lu
11-05-2013, 01:16 PM
The visuals have always been superior. But what I think truly set Pixar apart was their stories and storytelling, and that's where I think the last 3 movies have suffered. Brave was fine. Like I said, I wouldn't have surprised me if it was a Dreamworks movie. But Brave just wasn't up to their previous storytelling standards. And Monsters U was also…fine. Nothing bad to say about it, really. But nothing great to say about it either.

Planes, while it's a spinoff of Cars, is technically a "DisneyToon Studios" movie, so we can kinda sweep it under the rug.

But I did enjoy Tangled and thought it was a step up from their normal features. So maybe Frozen won't be so bad.

I am looking forward to Pixar's next, which is Inside Out. (http://pixar.wikia.com/Inside_Out)

Thor 2, very good follow up for him.

May be spoilers, stop reading if you haven't seen it, dummy!

The strongest points for me were the shifting of relations between the main characters (Thor, Odin, Loki) I liked that Loki kind of let his defense down a bit to show that regardless of his attitude he does seem to want/need Thor to care about him. Its almost paradoxical that the writing in the Asgardian family can be so tight and the Earth characters be so "blah". Except for Erik, who is mostly comic relief by now, I could care less if Jane Foster showed up to another movie. :dunno

The comedy and action were well paced and well placed, the Mjolnir trying to find Thor was hilarious and almost had me feeling bad for a damned hammer. :lol

Loki was written very well, the scene where he changes into Cap and asks thor if he'd like to chat about truth and Justice was great and a nice fit to shoehorn Evans in.

I didn't like the new "dude" added to the Earth posse, he seemed like just another crap character added in for unknown reasons, maybe just to have someone dumber than Kat in their group? They had Chris O'dowd in this as a throw away character, if they wanted to add some comedy relief to the Earth crew, why didn't they use him instead of the dipstick they used. Bad casting imo. Aside from that the Dark elves looked pretty good, but their leader and big bad looked a little lame and came off very flat to me, probably one of the most forgettable Marvel villains so far.

RUSH - 9.5 out of 10

Out of a rare occurrence, and sheer love for the movie, I saw Rush again. The last time I recalled doing this, it was roughly 10 years ago for the first of the two Crank films. That's not to say either movie is comparable. One is night and day from the other. I just respect Crank for its homage to old 80's movies, video games, and music. It was a movie that took a different approach from the average movie of yesteryear. It was fun and different, and due to its unique blend of absurdity, b.alls-to-the-wall attitude, and humour, I was won over. As for Rush, this is a masterpiece of elite cinematic proportions. Make no misconception about it, Crank to me was anything, but that.

This definitely ranks in the higher echelon of great films on my list, which include the much loved and respected, the ShawShank Redemption, and the under-appreciated, City of God due to its lack of fanfare among the masses. The casting of main characters is impeccable (they look like their real-life counterparts), the score (orchestrated by the fabulous Hans Zimmer), direction, cinematography (the Japan race scene is pure movie motion picture eye candy), and just the fact that the scenes were created with acute detail and accuracy to the real world events that went down... One only has to watch the film's 1976 crash sequence of Niki Lauda and compare it to the real-life event. Ron Howard did an incredible job here. Oh and his daughter is a total babe. Off topic? Absolutely, but wouldn't be an Eli26 post if I didn't...

Getting back on topic, Daniel Bruhl deserves an Oscar nod for his portrayal of former Formula 1 driver, Niki Lauda. To deny him of such an honour, is pure ignorance. Much like it was when Daniel Day Lewis failed to capture an Oscar for his portrayal of the Butcher in Gangs of New York. This man stole the movie for me. Without him in it, this would have been a very good movie, but not one of the greats.

Eli26
11-11-2013, 02:49 AM
I find it very hard to give any film a near perfect score. This hasn't happened for me since City of God. I unlike many on here, don't feel every film is deserving of this score. It has to be something else for me to deserve that respect. This is the biggest praise I can give for a movie, since no film is deserving of a perfect score of 10 out of 10.... Simply because perfection doesn't exist. Having said that, this comes close.

What a beautifully executed film! I highly recommend everyone goes out and sees Rush, even if you aren't a fan of the sport. I am not and I absolutely adored it.

I almost want to forgo from the average movie-goer's mentality, of seeing the big over hyped blockbuster franchise.... After Rush and Prisoners this was a Buzzkill.

Overall the movie really lacked substance from what Thor was. Odin could have had a meatier role especially since I loved the way they portrayed him in the first movie. He's reduced to nothing in this outing. Pathetic!

Though I appreciate the humor thrown in, it was overdone and unnecessary at times. Thankfully the CG didn't suck like the Avengers forest fight so that's where they got a 6. It wouldn't have been worth my time to rate them had they put together a shoddy(ier) job.

Seeing the kind of movies you enjoy, I'm sceptical of you appreciating this one.

We're the Millers - 7/10 had some pretty good laughs, more than I expected.

Furious 6 - 5/10 I think perhaps since I watched it at home and not at the big screen, this made very little impact on me in terms of action. I know for certain if I had gone to see this while it was out, I'd have been more impressed. But at home, it was like a congregation of the worst actors ever.

Grown Ups 2 - 4/10 Man you think bringing together this many comics would yield some pretty great ***** but obviously it's a sequel to a "family" film so what did I expect? Had some laughs but most were cheap jokes. I expect better from these guys.

^ I watched Shadow of the Vampire, with John Malkovich. I enjoyed it. Fun little film. I love movies that explore film history....even if it's a rather skewed version of history. :lol

Dafoe was great. Loved Cary Elwis' entrance.

So because in my country it's a National Holiday, among also being my Birthday, Thor 2 had sold out and 12 Years a Slave was playing way too late for me and my friend, so we decided to take in Ender's Game. Well, so much for those being my choices....

It was alright. it followed Rush, so yeah... It was meh...

6.5

Ender's Game. Last weeks number one movie in America...that no one saw.

Pain & Gain: 7.5/10 Very entertaining, but did feel a bit long.
Man With the Iron Fists: 7/10 Avoided this from all the bad reviews, but ended up being a blast for me.

Jaws - 10/10 Absolute Masterpiece.
:goodpost:

Well said. If I really had to eek out a top five - as well as STAR WARS, JAWS is immediately there.

It really is a perfect film. :rock

To me, it's got to be the most re-watchable film I've ever seen. If it's on, I don't care where it's at in the film I need to watch it until the end. Luckily it was on last night and I caught it right when Quint was using the rod to try to get a bite from the Shark.

Also watched The Fly, yet again over the weekend. 10/10 Masterpiece of Cronenberg. The older I get, the more disturbing it gets because the whole Fly disease is based around the aging process.

Actually, JAWS2 was on TV a month or so ago - & from memory (not having seen it in years), I kind of remembered it fondly. When I watched it, it didn't take long to realize that the magic had vanished with Spielberg gone & the whole production just coming across as a poor attempt to try & catch that lightning in a bottle again.

JAWS is certainly a beloved film to me - & always will be. :duff

Jaws II is watchable, but it's still completely hideous when you compare it to the first one. Even to this day, Jaws truly made the ocean frightening.

The Last Samurai 9.5/10

A wonderful film. The cinematography, score and performances are all top draw for me. The story is a little cliche at times but I can get over it. All in all it's a powerful piece of storytelling which captures the rich Japanese/Samurai history superbly well.
