Why does Nolan make films grounded in reality? Now that is ****ing stupid.

ZaCHw117
05-08-2013, 04:41 PM
Christmas movies an may doesn't feel right, realism is objective in the Nolan films. If you can dip in and out of your buddies dream's. I wouldn't call that realistic.

Plus, it feels like a marketing ploy to get up BR/DVD sales.

CelticPredator
05-08-2013, 04:50 PM
It's not. It's a stylistic choice.

I can already point out a good few reasons why you'd make a film set around Christmas time.

1. Color/lighting. You get a wide arrange of colors and lights to make a scene pop. Lighting, and color are very important elements to setting the mood for a scene. You could film a murder, and have it caked in red lights from a Christmas tree, without making it jarring for the viewer.

2. The contrast of mood. Setting a murder crime thriller on one of the most joyous holidays can create a very interesting contrast between the two.

3. An overall positive feel to the picture. For most people, Christmas makes them feel happy. Not everyone, of course, but you can make the film seem up beat and positive with Christmas in the background without the film having to actually BE upbeat and positive

I am a huge supporter of the autor theory. So yeah. Even if I don't agree with the style, I could never call it ****ing stupid (unless i'm doing it to make a counter point), because it's their style. Who the **** am I to say it's wrong?

Not a good way to look at films my friend.

ZaCHw117
05-08-2013, 04:53 PM
Just because I think it's ****ing stupid doesn't mean it is to other people. I'm a small choices guy, they really count in my book. And it's just off in IM3.

IMO
Of course.

I never saw IM3 in 3D. Thank the Lord Al' Mighty!

Yeah, the only reason me and my wife saw it in XD 3D (and Oblivion last month in XD) is because I've been winning movie tickets at work so for Oblivion we paid $5 for the both of us, and IM3 was only $8. :lol

I seriously doubt I'd ever pay $30.50 to see a movie in XD 3D. Even if it was like Celtic said, a dedicated 3D movie.

But with the movie tickets, paying like $5 or $8 bucks is cool. Not to mention there's less people in the theater since it's so pricey.

The only way i'll see another 3D movie, would be if it was something goofy and campy like Drive Angry. With crap flying at you, and not taking itself seriously.

The format really isn't that much fun any more.

It was all to unrealistic for me.

• The music (rap in the 20s?)
• The cars traveling 200 mph.
• The depiction of blacks in the time period.
• The homes, and mansions looked faker than fake ( the arch they walked through to get to each other's houses was covered in leaves, which were ALL the same perfect shade of green...)
• The dialogue was like a strange concoction of 20s and modern.
• The editing, and camera movement was far to absurd at times.

It all worked for me.

I wasn't sure about the music going in but I thought touching it up making it sounds 20ish worked quite well.

It wasn't traveling 200 mph. Maybe it got close to 100 but cars in the 20's didn't go terribly fast.

The houses looked very much like mansions from the 20's and that style wasn't uncommon, but its also to be done by the director in his other films.

You do realize that's about how blacks were looked at in the 20's right?

I found that to be mostly 20's with a very nice blend of modern.

That's just the style from the director. It worked for me.

I like this one enough to purchase it when it comes out on Blu.

Yeah, I did. I thought the 3D was well done. It added a nice bit to the party stuff and the car scenes.

Willow, I liked it. I like the beginning of the movie a lot, but I felt like the movie was turning into a mess near the end. Some things didn't make sense.

I just didn't like how at the end

they didn't need the baby like they said they did. They were able to defeat the queen with magic. so the whole movie becomes pointless at the end.

Like I said, I liked the beginning a lot, it kind of reminded me of the beginning of Lord of the Rings. I liked Val Kilmer too. I liked everyone pretty much.

But it almost felt like George Lucas did not know how to end the movie properly. It felt like he had this idea for an adventure story, but he didn't know exactly how to end it. It feels very messy.

Star Trek into Darkness: While an accomplished action movie I was hugely disappointed with the lame duck captain. The action is pretty relentless with little time for the story to breath. Cumberbatch is excellent, probably the best villain we have seen in STrek movies. The charm from the first movie is not there either. The biggest problem I have with the movie is its treatment of Kirk. Pines was excellent in the first movie but he acts like a spoilt brat and headless chicken in this one. Given that he has been Captain for some time now we did not need to see sub immaturity in the second outing. It looks like we will have to wait for the third movie to see the tactical genius that is Kirk. As an action movie I'd give this 8/10. As a Star Trek movie 5/10.

There have been better Brainiac stories in JL(U).

Watching Brainiac freak out from some bugs flying around his head was f-cking idiotic.

Contrast that with the badass scene in the Justice League Unlimited Justice Lords story where Wally takes down Lex/Brainiac by running around the planet so fast the Speed Force nearly takes him.

Either improve of that or don't bother.

Though I didn't really have any desire to see The Great Gatsby, I know I'll complete ignore it now that I heard there was hip hop in it. Why? Wasn't it a period piece?

EVILFACE

Well you can play any music from any period in a movie, as long as say Don Draper isn't turning on the radio and hearing Def Leppard's Pour Some Sugar On Me.

The problem I had with the hip hop is this movie takes place in the roaring 20's. Jazz was thriving during this period with some fantastic rhythmic music. That should should have been dominant instead of some throw away Jay Z tunes.

Don't dismiss it because of that. I wasn't sure how that would work either but I thought it blended in nicely. It wasn't like all of a sudden a rap video started. Most of the songs seemed to have been done in a way to have a 20's feel vibe. I will say the guy that directed it is know for doing odd stuff with films based on his previous work.

:lecture I enjoyed this movie, and this is on of my favorite books of all time. The director of this one also directed the 1996 Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rogue so this "stylization" is something he's done several times.

I'd give this movie a 7/10 for me. I really liked the costume design, set pieces, and the acting performances. For me the biggest problem was that the movie did seem to get a little drawn out.

I've never read the book but I admit the movie has made me interested in doing so. I've seen Romeo and Juliet which I didn't care much for either way but had never seen Moulin Rogue. It just didn't feel too crazy with the sylization in the trailer to make me want to see it, and the movie itself stayed true to that. It was nicely balanced I think in that regard.

I gave it an 8 but I could see a 7 depending on what issues one had. I agree all of those were pretty darn good and I could see it getting some Oscar Noms for certain aspects.

Side By Side: 10/10

"Side by Side is a 2012 American documentary film directed by Christopher Kenneally. The documentary investigates the history, process and workflow of both digital and photochemical film creation. It shows what artists and filmmakers have been able to accomplish with both film and digital and how their needs and innovations have helped push filmmaking in new directions. Interviews with directors, cinematographers, colorists, scientists, engineers and artists reveal their experiences and feelings about working with film and digital — where we are now, how we got here and what the future may bring."

Loved it. So very interesting and informative.

A Royal Affair (2012) 7.5/10

A Royal Affair (Danish: En kongelig affære) is a 2012 historical drama film directed by Nikolaj Arcel, starring Mads Mikkelsen, Alicia Vikander and Mikkel Følsgaard. The story is set in the 18th century, at the court of the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark, and focuses on the romance between his wife, Caroline Matilda of Great Britain, and the royal physician Struensee.

Recently watched this and havnt scene it in years! No joke! It still holds up well also. Some slow parts here and there but the action twords the end is very cool, would of loved to see this on the big screen! Lots of movies have ripped this one off, and it just goes to show how good the story is, and what it means. Just a good adventure! BRAVO!

Star Trek Into Darkness:
Great flick, I think every character's role was strengthened. I did not like the choice for Kirk on the reboot and thought the guy was piss poor in the role, my opinion reversed 100% for this movie, he seemed to nail the role and seemed natural doing it. Quinto was great and this had a blend of past "Spockisms" that you get the whole gamut all at once. Obviously the show was visually as stunning as well and the end made me feel cheated, I felt like I should be able to watch Star trek 3 right now. :lol (Yes, the ending excited me as much as anything else in the movie) Going back tonight for viewing 2! :yess:

Ya this movie was da bomb, I felt the same way about pines but like u, my opinion has reversed after seeing this. I don't know about anyone else, but while watching this movie couldn't help but think that star wars is in good hands. If Abrams star wars movie is anything like this-believable worlds, effective humor, drama, action, great characterizations, great acting, witty dialog, fantastic effects and overall great story-we are in for a ****in treat of a movie. I do however shutter thinking about how much lens flare there will be in saber fights. Lol blinding/annoying streaks of red green and blue across the entire picture.

Only other downside is Abrams may not have time to do star trek 3, with star wars on his plate.

This has been the second time in as many weeks that this movie has been able to cheer me up when I really needed it. And I cried like a little girl both times... :lol

I am no Matt Damon Fan.

However...he has to be given kudos for this movie. I am actually a little sorry that I did not take my kids to see this in the theaters. They loved it and I only watched it on TV because we were having a movie night and that is what they picked.

At least...that was the reason I watched it...the first time I watched it...:)

Just had a marathon of superhero films over the last couple of days. That's enough spandex-wearing weirdos stories for at least few months.

Iron Man - 8/10

Iron Man 2 - 6/10

Captain America - 7,5 (possibly 8 on a second viewing)

The Avengers - 9/10

Batman Begins - 8,5/10

The Dark Knight - 9.5/10

The Dark Knight Rises - 8,5/10

Spider Man 3 - 5/10

Dredd (2012) - 8/10 (C'mon Garland. Make the sequel happen)

X-Men First Class 7,5/10 (possible 8 on a re-watch. The flick has a lot of good going for it. First time seeing it)

QT does it again :rock

Loved it, and feel slightly wrong for doing so. Some pretty uncomfortable, disturbing scenes and dialogue.

I would rank it 3rd in my QT list of favourite films, just slightly trailing behind IB & PF

X2 - 9.9/10

No movie is perfect, but this is about as close as it can get.

Seamless pacing and transitioning between the subplots. Plenty of cool action, just the right amout of humour, great development and continuation of the characters relationships & an emotional ending

Dull, dull, dull!!!

I gave it a 4 based on Alan's character and his performance. It had absolutely nothing else!

This and part II should never have been made. For me it has tainted the first one which I really enjoyed at the time.

Too over the top - rambles on a bit in parts, and stylistically the mix between stylistic 20s/30s and contemporary felt off balance in many places.
