Villain: A "villain" was defined as a character(s) whose wickedness of mind,
selfishness of character and will to power are sometimes masked by beauty and nobility,
while others may rage unmasked.
They can be horribly evil or grandiosely funny, but are ultimately tragic.

people who, if real, you wouldn't want to cross paths with:

Im not sure if many will agree with me but I LOVED Sweeney Todd and he is one of my favorite movie villians. He is a barber that sings and he still gave me the creeps.

The Joker (TDK) and The Green Goblin of Spider-man would be my top two. The reason here is because these two don't have any typical, materialistic goal in mind. Rather, both fully embrace what it means to be the Villain. To accept that role and fully take it up as one's lot in life, with all else ancillary. These two stand head and shoulders above the rest. They fully personify what it means to exhume the darkest part of people's souls and put it on a pedestal for all to not only see and accept, but to take pride in as well. They exemplify that there's a difference between truly being a villain, and being a run of the mill antagonist.

Sauron and Darth Sidious also fall into this archetypal category. However, while Sauron may be acutely aware of his opposition to the powers of good, Darth Sidious is willing to do great evil in order to achieve a greater good - order and balance in the galaxy. Vader, likewise, while not as much of a Machiavellian, is still quite cunning and likely the greatest warrior that mythos has ever seen. With all of the talk of a "winning ticket" thrown about with November fast approaching, in terms of Villainy, the Sith truly had one. The most cunning strategist and the most deft combatant combining their forces to seize and secure power.
Back to Sauron for a moment... a being second only in power to the gods (Valar), he was arguably the most brilliant, exemplified not through a desire to destroy life, but to dominate it. Yes, he did seek the complete and utter destruction of Men, but he only sought to raze the World of Men in so far as Men were a nuisance that didn't fit into the grand plan. Having clandestinely brought about their downfall with Numenor years earlier, in the LotR tale, he was simply wrapping up unfinished business to enact his complete and utter domination of all life. His servant the Witch-King ended the line of Kings, led the assault on the Minas Tirith, slew Theoden, and the list of his infamy is almost as lengthy of that of his master. Saruman, also a great villain, surrendering his principles for the sake of his own ends; however, he only came onto the scene as a villain once his mind was twisted by Sauron.

I could go on and on, but rather than dwell on every single one, I'll leave it with the diatribe on the above Paradigms of Villainy, as I'll call them, and move on to some other favorites.

Daniel Plainview - "There Will Be Blood" (though he's also the protagonist)
Scar - "The Lion King"
Hans & Simon Gruber - "Die Hard" & "Die Hard with a Vengeance"
Barbossa & Davy Jones - "PotC"
The Joker - "Batman: The Mask of the Phantasm"
Ra's al Ghul - "Batman Begins"
Hannibal Lecter - "Silence of the Lambs", "Hannibal", "Red Dragon"
Magneto - "X-Men", "X2", "X-Men 3: TLS"
John Doe - "Se7en"
Anton Chigurh - "No Country for Old Men"
Norman Stansfield - "Leon: The Professional"
Lex Luthor - "Superman Returns" (movie was crap, but Luthor was good)
Sloan - "Wanted"
Col. William Tavington - "The Patriot"
Voldemort - "Harry Potter"
Megatron - "Transformers"
Boba Fett - "Star Wars"
Frank Costello - "The Departed"
Commodus - "Gladiator"
Bill - "Kill Bill"
T-1000 - "T2"
The Dark Planet - "The Fifth Element"
Sid 6.7 - "Virtuosity"
Vincent - "Collateral"
Viktor - "Underworld"
Agamemnon - "Troy"
The Jackal - "The Jackal"
Agent Smith - "The Matrix"
Khan - "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"
Thade - "Planet of the Apes"
Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom - "Con Air"
Thulsa Doom - "Conan the Barbarian"

best movie Villains...hmmmm

I dont really have a top villain...i love most of them.

But my top 3?

1) The Joker - Nicholson/Ledger performances...yea thats right...I LIKE Jack's Joker as well as Ledger...i havent forgotten him yet.

2) Pin-Head - BEFORE he became an even more lame Freddy-esc slasher villain he was one of the most frightening characters to grace the screen.

3) The creepy kid from Salems Lot :P...i saw the film when i was 6...and i didnt sleep for five weeks thanks to the window scene.

On a side note, Hydro, your avatar creeps me the hell out. I saw The Exorcist when i was 4, accidently stumbled into the room when my older sister and her friends were watching it...i didnt sleep without nightmares for over a year...some of the best make-up in horror movie history.

To this day, i still cannot watch the film...hell i cant even see a picture of her without feeling completely creeped out...it scared me that badly as a kid its stayed with me ever since.

Regards

a now worried SJ :P

Nazis (various movies)
Darth Vader
Emperor Palpatine
The Alien/Aliens/Alien Queen
The Predator(s) (in the first two movies at least)
The Terminator
Blofeld (and by extension, Dr. Evil)
Jason Vorhees
Freddy Krueger

I could probably think of more, but those are the ones that first come to mind. I'm not going to add Ledger's Joker because, as good as his performance was, he isn't the definitive Joker to me. I'm not sure the definitive movie Joker has been done, since I've never seen a movie version as good as the best comics version(s). (And to be quite honest, I think I may prefer Nicholson's version anyway.)

I also would have added various mob/crime characters such as Vito Corleone, his sons, Tony Montana, etc... but in all those movies, even if they were "bad" guys, they were still the heroes of the stories, so they don't count!

Just a few in no particular order:

Darth Vader
Auric Goldfinger
Bruce the Shark
Arnold Toht
Hans Gruber
Agent Smith
T-800
T-1000
Predator
Alien
Davy Jones
Joker (Nicholson and Ledger)
Gothmog
The Mighty Wez

If I had to narrow this to my TOP 5, tough but here (no particular order, always enjoy rewatching these menacing 5 and I'm going to stick to 'humans' rather than 'monsters'):

Hans Gruber
Auric Goldfinger
Joker (Ledger)
Agent Smith
Darth Vader

Voice and presence really knock these 5 out of the park for me.

And of course Toht, even though he didn't make the Top 5 only because he isn't the central Indy villain in Raiders.

You're confusing protagonist/antagonist with villains. A film about a mobster, a hit man, a bank robber, etc can have you rooting for them as the protagonist of the film. But that doesn't make their actions less villainous.

there's a big difference in nolans dialogue and Tarantinos dialogue.
to me Tarantino has the best dialogue and is the best director alive.
and its Leo as the villain in a QT western so i already know ill like him more.

there's a big difference in nolans dialogue and Tarantinos dialogue.
to me Tarantino has the best dialogue and is the best director alive.
and its Leo as the villain in a QT western so i already know ill like him more.

I'd agree about Tarantino's dialogue.

Only one in the same league is Elmore Leonard -- author of Out of Sight, Get Shorty, Jackie Brown, and the Justified/ Raylan Givens novels (Pronto, Fire in the Hole, Riding the Rap, and Raylan). His dialogue is brilliant.

I also like Cormac McCarthy for dialogue. Sharp dialogue written for men of few words.

I don't think anyone has said Maleficent yet, which surprises me. She's arguably the baddest of the Disney villains.

In the old Disney days, I always thought she was the best of the Disney bad Guys/Gals.

Yea elmore leonard is a awesome author.
And Leonards book is Rum Punch that Tarantino adapted into Jackie Brown.
But i imagine you know that.

Disney actually has the BEST villains,
Scar for example, this is a Villain that Actually Kills the guy he wants to, not many villains can say that, no one has killed James bond or, you know the people they were after, this badass lion kills his rival and takes the throne for years, not many villains can say they did that, Scar is more hardcore than most villains LOL :yess:

But ... Bambi's mom was so tasty. I prefer my 'Bambi's-mom' medium rare -- preferably seared over an open flame.

Just "the circle of life". Heh. And Mufasa was a good guy. Gotta love the irony of a Disney movie contradicting its own villain from ten movies ago.

Then again, Gaston was a villain, and threatened to mount the Beast's head on his wall. Is head-mounting villainous by itself ... or is it just because the Beast was sentient and lovable? Does the "circle of life" include wall-mounted heads? There were some singing wall-heads in the Country Bear Jamboree back in the day (and I think one of them was a deer) ... so the concept can't be entirely villainous.
