So what do you do while you wait for your PS3 system to download the numerous updates?

I've

done laundry
taken the trash out
made something to eat
did the dishes
took a ^^^^

How 'bout you?

There's an update available? I'll have to download that and see if it fixes my bluetooth problem.

Anyway to answer your question, here's Capcom's answer:

...go make a sandwich and grab a soda, then come on back.

That was their actual answer to people complaining about the Devil May Cry 4 install.

you know what's coming don't you?

"while you're waiting for your 360 to be repaired I flew to Europe for a few weeks and then came back to the US and drove coast to coast and back and then did the things you mentioned."

not from me though, i love my 360.

I could've done that the first time I sent my PS3 in for repair. Since it came back with the exact same problem, I imagine I will have the opportunity to do all that while I wait again. :banghead

It's really taking you that long to download it? It took me about 5 minutes, but then again, I did that much earlier in the day. I think it really depends on how many other people are doing it at the same time. It makes sense there would be a lot more traffic this time of the day.

it does but it updates as it loads the games and they are fast....initial installs on the PS3 blow! They take anywhere from 2-10 mins. For such a bigger format, why do they need the huge swap file...oh yeah...programming for PS3 is a nightmare!...how many games run in 1080p? any? it is a great bluray player tho

I have been frustrated that some PS3 games run 720p when their 360 counterpart is 1080p.

I prefer updates on the 360--quicker and easier, needing less input from me.

Most games run at either 720p or less, which is really sad when you consider that these are supposed to be 'next-gen' although I have to commend Gran Turismo 5 for the incredible graphics at 1080p.

this is true... but considering that most games are running at a smooth 60fps at 720p i'm more than happy with the way they look. if they can produce that at 1080p it would be better, but i'm happy with whats been delivered so far.

Because you don't understand technology. :D

Each device has/is assigned a different IP address and/or filter. Your 360, Wii, PSP and PS3 may all connect to your router, true. BUT, the problem lies that some only may be set to go outside the NAT firewall. Sounds like your PS3 is inside that firewall, which is causing your connection to have problems.

What is not to understand? When I test my 360 it says open (the best possible connection). When I test my PS3 it says I have a nat setting of 2. Also I do not have the option to change NAT settings. That's because the vast majority of users have no need for fast upload speeds! Most of what goes up, is simply requests for web pages, requests to retrieve email, etc. The real work is downloading all those requests, therefore the high download speeds. If you are hosting your own web server or something similar, then you would need high upload speeds to "serve" the requests of your users. It can also make a difference in games! :rotfl

Different PS3 NAT Types and Meanings (Generalized)
NAT Type 1
You are either NOT behind a router/firewall OR you have already DMZ enabled your PS3. Your PS3 is connected properly and you shouldn't run into any issues.
NAT Type 2
Your PS3 is connected to a router. Your PS3 is connected properly and you shouldn't run into any issues.
NAT Type 3
You are behind a router/firewall. While your PS3 may be able to connect to the PSN and perform downloads/updates other functions may not work as intended.

My static settings should still be saved on my router right. All I should have to do is set up my PS3 for it again right.

The easiest way to do it is this:

Go to your PS3, and go to Network Settings.

Under network settings, check out your connection type/settings.

You will see your PS3's IP address. Write down that IP or have it ready.

Go to your router's IP address via your internet address bar.

When in the router via the internet, find DMZ (or if it says NAT settings, go there)

There should be a check box and some kind of text that resembles this... "Allow this computer to be outside of the NAT firewall..." or something like that. Type in the IP address of your PS3 in that spot, and check the checkbox (if there is one) to allow it. Then click on save to save the settings (or Ok, whatever your router has listed).

Then, do a connection test on your PS3. It should say NAT 2.

Ping does relate to speed because it is the time for a packet to be sent to a remote computer and for the response to be returned to the local computer. This time is affected by the number of hops (computers) it has along the way, the distance and the connection speeds of the entire route of the packet and response. Lower ping time, means better gaming and less lag!!!

Yeah but for the speed test it not going to mean anything its just really measuring distance between you and the server. Yeah for gaming but the ping for the speed test and to PSN or or Xbox Live servers will be different.

I don't think thats due to Nat. I think its just because of the servers that PSN are using are inadequate and overrun at times.

Yeah it was static address. I think I might have found out what is wrong, when I was checking my settings on the PS3 it said ip address: automatic. If I remeber right I had to manualy enter the Ip address and other things to match the port forwarding of my router. So I might need to change those when I get back home.

Yeah if you check the router for the Port Forwarding setting get that IP address and then set the PS3 to use that IP. Thats all you should have to do.
