Yeah, generally... but just to throw it out there: 2 remakes of older movies from Burton (one with Depp)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- terrible movie
Planet of the Apes- one of the worst movies of all time

Here's hoping a movie version of a soap opera about vampires, werewolves and what-not can fair better. I really want this to be awesome, but every so often Burton churns out some terrible crap.

I know there are some Dark Shadows fans here. And you must have opinions about this movie.

I never followed the original series much, but the little I have seen I liked. I think it would be very cool to see Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins... well I just want to see him with fangs! :rock

I know the whole vampire thing is way too big right now, but this might be very cool.

Dark Shadows Set to Shoot in January

Source: Deadline July 15, 2010

Tim Burton's Dark Shadows is set to roll in January 2011, reports Deadline.

The film has also received a new writer in the form of Seth Grahame-Smith (author of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"), who will rewrite the John August screenplay.

Based on the cult soap opera from the 1960's, the film stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, a popular vampire character who took over the show's focus after he first appeared one year into the series' original five year run

Honestly, my fear is that Burton and Depp will make it silly (like Alice and Charlie), and I'm pretty much done with any future movies they do if that happens.

Dark Shadows should be more like Sleepy Hollow - gothic and atmospheric.

And no Helena Bonham Carter in the freakin' movie, please!

I've honestly grown tired of the Depp + Burton movies. Seems like its just a tired relationship anymore and seems to lead to more mediocrity than anything else.

I assume its more on Burton though, as non-Burton Depp films still seem good.

Depp always does a good job, even in a mediocre movie. Burton just spends too much time on the weird visuals instead of the story itself.

Usually nicely immserive though. This duo yet AGAIN lol?! Sounds interesting though, love Depp myself, Burton can bring it, but really does need to fixate more on story as said, like original Batmans. I was so disappointed with Alice despite the world he created. I actually said to mself that if they duo'ed again that I'd pass as they certainly let me down for the last time with that BUT I just like Johnny too much, so will give it a go as it does sound ok.
"And no Helena Bonham Carter in the freakin' movie, please!"
Yes completely agree there too. Stunning actress, but we need at least a little break TB!

Charlie and the chocolate factory blew chunks as did Alice In Wonderland. If Burton's new movies are to reflect what we can expect from now on I hope they get a new director fast. I want Dark Shadows to be erie, not a ____ing acid trip.

Update!!!

http://screenrant.com/dark-shadows-burton-depp-production-sandy-86393/

Burton & Depp’s ‘Dark Shadows’ Begins Production in April 2011

Director Tim Burton and Johnny Depp will, at long last, work together (for an eighth time, that is) on a feature-length treatment of the cult TV show Dark Shadows.

Burton and Depp are (wisely) taking a break from working together on quirkier fare like Alice in Wonderland and will be on more familiar, gothic territory with their new project – which is scheduled to start production this spring.

Deadline is reporting that April 2011 is the planned start date for production to begin on Dark Shadows, which was originally a hit ABC television series that ran from 1966-1971. The Dark Shadows TV show was a macabre melodrama that featured an assortment of supernatural creatures, including werewolves, zombies, and the non-sparkling vampire Barnabas Collins (the role Depp will play in the film adaptation). It also featured the sort of stylized sets and bizarre musical score that, well, every Tim Burton movie has, and was reportedly very influential on the ghoulish auteur.

While Burton regular John August was originally brought on to script Dark Shadows, the job has now fallen to Seth Grahame-Smith, a.k.a. the author of the revisionist history/horror book Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, as well as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It’s safe to say that Dark Shadows will be more in the vein of Burton & Depp’s Hammer Horror-inspired collaborations (ie. Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) than their PG-Rated, more family-friendly fare like this year’s Alice or Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

While an increasing number of moviegoers are now tired of seeing Depp – with pale makeup and an elaborate wig to boot – and Burton work together, Dark Shadows has the potential to be a deliciously dark and twisted supernatural creature tale in the age of Twilight. The subject matter is right up both artist’s alley and the two have been quite vocal about their adoration of the original Dark Shadows TV show in the past.

Burton/Depp and Grahame-Smith have found success of late in tackling previously established material and giving it a more twisted spin. We can only hope they don’t just employ Tim Burton’s Secret Formula in their approach to Dark Shadows and instead deliver something that’s a bit more inspired.

Dark Shadows will likely reach theaters by 2012.

Good to have an update - I hope like hell it's nothing like Alice in Wonderland. I am more for the Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd approach, but I really want this movie to be its own thing.

Tim Burton's 'Dark Shadows' Begins Filming
By Kellvin Chavez on May 18, 2011

Filming begins this week on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ “Dark Shadows,” which brings the cult classic television series to the big screen under the direction of Tim Burton. The film’s all-star ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Burton is directing and producing “Dark Shadows” from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, story by John August and Grahame-Smith, based on the television series created by Dan Curtis. Also producing are Oscar® winner Richard D. Zanuck (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Driving Miss Daisy”), continuing his long association with Burton; Oscar® winner Graham King (“Rango,” “The Departed”), continuing his collaboration with Depp; Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, and David Kennedy. The executive producers are Chris Lebenzon, Nigel Gostelow, Tim Headington, and Bruce Berman.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, Oscar®-winning production designer Rick Heinrichs (“Sleepy Hollow”), Oscar®-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Alice in Wonderland”) and editor Chris Lebenzon (“Alice in Wonderland”). The score will be composed by Danny Elfman.

“Dark Shadows” is being filmed entirely in England, both at Pinewood Studios and on location.

“Dark Shadows” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Hey Darth,

My guess is when Barnabas shows up as the long lost collins cousin... that he suffers from a skin condition which makes it almost impossible to walk out in the sun during the day, this explains his sunscreen and black out shades... It has to be the reason he's made up like the jokers younger brother. I enjoy most Burton films, but making Depp wear this through the entire film is even garish for Burton's taste...not to mention ridiclous...LOL!

How many overwrought vampire shows are there now? The last thing we need is another vampire movie taking itself too seriously. I'd like to see Burton channel some of his Beetlejuice sense of humor for this one.

Dark Shadows had a tone all of its own, very gothic, nothing like many of the other vampire shows/movies out there today.

Burton doesn't have to make a joke out of it to make it stand out, it would do it all on its own.

But I was afraid they would take this over the top and make it silly, because that seems to be what Burton and Depp are into these days, with the exception of Sweeney Todd.

Dark Shadows is my favorite television show of all time, and I was originally so excited to see Depp get the part because my mother and I used to talk about him being a good choice if they ever made a film. I can't get excited for it if Burton and Depp turn it into a joke.

Gotta agree with you there...
the "campiness" was due to microphones showing and people forgetting their lines, but overall it was supposed to be serious... Barnabas was intimidating and melancholic, and the whole story was quite good! (Except for all the non-Barnabas drama) :lol

From Latino Review (http://www.latinoreview.com/news/chloe-moretz-talks-kick-ass-sequel-hints-at-dark-shadows-secret-14769):

(excerpt from an interview with Chloe Moretz)
The busy young woman also has a role in director Tim Burton's adaptation of the popular television show, 'Dark Shadows.' She plays Carolyn Stoddard. On the character, she said:

"Oh, Carolyn, that’s a fun character. That’s a really fun character. She is crazy. She is this teenager, like 15-year-old hippie who is into The Carpenters and Alice Cooper. She’s super music-y and raw, like free love, you know. She’s fun. I can’t say much because he has a really dark secret I can’t tell you."

Asked if the secret she made mention of is something that fans of the television show would be aware of, Moretz replied:

"No, it’s new. It’s new to everything so go see it. May of next year, Dark Shadows!"

After yesterday's set photos from the film, some may be wondering what kind of vibe Burton is going for. Moretz described it as:

"It’s Tim Burton so it’s like Beetlejuice. I have to say it’s a mixture of Beetlejuice, a teeny bit of Sweeney and the scariness of Sweeney but the fun of Sleepy Hollow with the scariness of Sleepy Hollow. I’d definitely say it’s a lot like Sleepy Hollow because you go from the Ichabod Crane character to the Headless Horseman who’s comedic and yet terrifying. It straddles that fine line of camp and drama so it’s like a drama horromedy thriller."

Not too sure about the rest though... Barnabas looks a lot better though... and Carter looks like the freaking Queen from Alice again... ugh...

Johnny looks MUCH better here. I think Burton is at his best when he does straight up gothic horror. Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd really let his style shine. However, I'm not a big fan of his family-friendly fantasies (Alice, POTA, Charlie etc.)

Glad he's sticking to what he does right here.

See Johnny Depp As The Haunting Barnabas Collins in 'Dark Shadows'
Thursday, January 12, 2012

Part of EW's 2012 preview, Warners has shared a new look at both Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, the retelling of the classic teleplay arriving in theaters May 11, 2012. The image isn't all that exciting, but Depp looks haunting as Barnabas Collins.

"The story focuses on Barnabas Collins (Depp), who was transformed into a vampire by a jilted lover (Eva Green's witch Angelique) way back in the 1700s and buried. He's just been dug up, and attempts to reintegrate with his descendants, led by Michelle Pfeiffer's Elizabeth and Jonny Lee Miller's Roger - despite the fact that Angelique is still around and still not in a forgiving mood."

I really didn't mean for this... but I find myself really Hating Helena, I never really cared for her and she's not a bad actress, but I'm just getting so annoyed by her

Completely Agree with this
of course I understand Tim wanting to do something different but those films you mention are awful for me, I also hate Corpse Bride too,
Alice is one of my most hated films, I know people love it but I just can't even finish it again...

Gonna give this one a shot for nostalgia's sake. I used to like the soap opera when I would watch it with my mom after I got home from school when I was in kindergarten. I think it has the potential to make for a really good movie. And Burton is a great director. But to be honest, I am getting a little burnt out on his style.

.... Blockbuster then? :lol
I think the re-make episodes are on Hulu for free... but it's not as good as the original

BTW just saw the trailer captured from TV...
seems like they changed the mood quite a bit...
it's more a comedy...
Visually amazing, and I got a Beetlejuice humor vibe from it...
I'm sure fans opinions will be divided...
I'll wait for a better resolution version

Watch it here if you want to be spoiled... it'll be gone soon methinks

I don't really get a 'comedy' feel from that - yea, they'll be humorous lines, but I think it will still remain somewhat dramatic and not goofy. I like the look of what was there, but it can still be pretty misleading.

Getting into the old show is just way to much if you want to know the story. Just watch the one from 91, 12 episodes.

Victoria is super hot in it. Plus, Adrian Paul is in it.

The only thing that is bothering me so far about the Burton one is Alice Pooper.

well the movie itself looks really good, the costumes look really good, the actors are good actors, and the first half of the trailer looked really really good, like sleepy hollow kinda,

but then when the jokes start and the 70s music is when i kinda lost it, i hope it translates better but after the witch appears in the trailer as a blonde i kinda felt not great about the trailer,

Although not a fan of Tim Burton (Mars Attacks! is the only film of his that I like), I must say this movie was pretty good.

It's definitely not as 'weird' as his other films...and it isn't as childish either. It's almost like Burton realised that adults do in fact watch his movies. Hopefully this is a new trend in his future projects.
