I also was thinking this was about JJ's Fridge and was trying to figure out if that was why the final scene of LOST was in a cold environ.

But yeah, Fringe looks kind of cool.

Hells yes!!! Tonight baby!!!! Already to go on the HD-DVR!!!!

Ok, maybe it's just me and because I have a nice Plamsa and pay for my HDTV, but does anyone really even watch regular TV anymore?? I feel cheated when I try to watch Fox or whatever on SDTV. I turned it to 02 (Fox-SD) instead of 702 (Fox-HD) lastnight when I got home to watch Terminator and it looked like absolute crap!! Just crap! I thought the HD service had gone out or something and almost cried!!

I just can't stand to watch SDTV most of the time. The only stuff I really watch in SD is Cartoon Network (Adult Swim ^^^^^es!!), Comedy Central, The Military Channel and Spike. It's pretty damned sad how spoiled I've become with HDTV. Hopefully they will start to bring every channel into HD by the end of 09!!

What a brilliant 1st episode, I was glued to the TV from beginning to end! It doesn't hurt that it's a sci-fi themed show which I love and the cast is awesome, Josh Jackson was really good and Anna Torv (Olivia) looks like she was cloned from Cate Blanchett's DNA, I really liked her character as well. The writing was solid and it was a great set up for things to come, can't wait for the rest of the season.

I wasn't expecting much, the reviews haven't been great - but I liked it a lot. The world is much like Lost with the fake companies and a little more sci-fi with the bionic arm and the MD's walls. I also like Mark Valley a lot. I hope he's a recurring villain.

I hated the fact that Mark Valley's character turned out to be a villain. It kinda renders the story in this episode pointless and the struggles moot.

While I enjoyed the pilot, I didn't see anything creative or original about it that justified the parlaying of the "From the creators of Lost" tagline. From the initial impression the show seems very derivative of past sci-fi shows, i.e. X-Files (pretty obvious comparison).

Scar
09-10-2008, 02:21 AM
I'm agreeing with the general consensus. Critics can have their take on it, but the show is innovative and daring, with an sterling cast. I was already a huge John Noble fan. I still want to somehow arrange it so that he'll show up at all future family reunions in character as Denethor; it doesn't matter if he's dressed in a filthy tank top and jeans, as long as he acts like Denethor. I think it could make things much more interesting.

Critics have taken to denigrating Abrams for his predictability of being completely unpredictable, and also for challenging viewers to think beyond the borders of what we would normally consider reality. Frankly, I think these make his shows, first Lost and now Fringe, all the more compelling.

You mean his predictability of attempting to be completely unpredictable. I would imagine that the critics would shut up if he were completely successful in that regard. Guess he isn't, then?

I have to agree... it feels like an updated X-Files to me. I can even foresee the recurring "plot" with Massive Dynamics occurring throughout the episodes, while stand alone episodes will be common as well. That being said, I liked it and have high hopes for it.

I liked it, but couldn't get over the confused/disgusted frown she had almost the entire show. There were a couple WTF's that I thought were unlikely, even for a show that's about the implossible. Sure, it moves the plot along, but really? For example... why would she yell out her partners name while he's got a suspect at gunpoint, thereby distracting him and allowing the suspect to blow him up? You don't just stop and yell, you keep running to back up your partner. Just a nitpick, but stuff like that annoys me.

:lecture I guess you're right. So pray tell, how is LOST going to end? :D

I can't recall a single critic nor entertainment analyst nor Abrams fan who has been able to consistently project the most cryptic plot points in his works. I've come to admire him for his capacity to tell tales which engross viewers. I'd argue rather that critics become frustrated about the predictability of being unpredictable... much akin to their initial dislike of M. Night Shyamalan. I'm not making a comparison between the two, but if you go into a work expecting plot twists though surprisingly in turn garner no immediate reward thereafter, you will likely end up frustrated and jilted. If, however, you can delay that knowing the wait will be rewarded within the context of the larger narrative via the LOTR tales which spanned three years in cinemas, then one will eventually be sated.

The reason I bring up M. Night is because many critics have defamed Unbreakable, one of my all-time favorite films. They deemed the ending predictable, expecting a twist at the end. Even many ciritics who weren't spoiled by the leaked ending on the internet fell into the line of thought that, "we should expect this type of Houdini act from this creator". If it were done by a relatively unknown writer/director with no other major works under his belt, it may well have been greatly lauded, as it has in cult followings or with those who were not so myopic with their critiques.

The point being that when you sit down to watch a television program or walk into a movie theater, it's best to lay expectations and biases aside for the sake of the larger story, rather than immure oneself in likelihoods.

I just wanted to chime in. I saw it last night and loved it! I'm a big X-Files fan and to me, it had a faint "X-File-esque" feel to it. (Fringe=Pseudo-science, etc. etc.) I'm sure some of you see where I'm coming from. Anyways, I hope it goes far. I wouldn't mind having a weekly show to follow again. TV hasn't been the best lately IMO. Like some of you said, this show haas a lot of potential and I hope it only gets better.

My biggest WTF was that an FBI agent has to fly to Iraq to get a family member to visit a mental patient and then doesn't even bring the family member in to see him? The FBI can't just get a warrant to visit the patient? This seems just lazy, it would have been easy to come up with a better reason the son needs to come with her.

How did she know what was happening? She never saw the suspect's face so she was either too far away or her partner was blocking her line of site. If she couldn't see his face, how did she know he was holding a cell phone, let alone holding a cell phone that would detonate an IED. If she could tell he was holding a phone, why would she think it was a detonator...he could've been about to surrender and call his attorney.

Anyhow, I did like the show sans little things like this and her facial expression the whole time. Oh, and what's with the POV from under the location marquis with the Apaches flying overheard? Pretty random.

I liked the show and I'm interested in what plot-twists Abrams will bring to it.
The show is a fine mix of X-Files, Millennium and a tidbit of Twilight Zone added to the blend.

But I'd have to agree with Q, some things don't seem to be thought out and/or acted out very well.
Like others, I was also under the impression that Olivia noticed that the runaway suspect was up to no good - it felt as if she somehow noticed it from the look in his eyes (which did seem rather strange since she was at a large distance from him).
Then later she says she hadn't seen his face at all!

And the 'lost son', who is in so much trouble he has to flee to Iraq to avoid them, in the end casually says "he can handle his own problems" when he decides to stay, which hardly needs any persuasion.
Though of course I'm glad he stays :angelsmil

For a show made by a person who is known for excellent intricate story-lines, I feel Fringe has made a weak start when the story in one episode doesn't even feel to add up very well.
Let's hope this improves and Abrams is better in his game when the 'big picture' slowly starts to emerge.
Also the actors still have to get used to their roles; it's often when you watch the earliest episodes of a longer-run TV show that you see how uncomfortable the familiar characters are in the pilot episode.

Olivia tells him that the government will take care of his debt - $600K owed to a guy named Big Eddie.

Also I love the location captions - very originally done - I've seen the 3D captions in features, but not on TV before.

Kind of a high budget version of the X-Files, it in fact reminded me of the first X-Files movie (haven't seen the second movie yet). I hope the rest in the series are as good if not better, and Fox doesn't cancel it.

I liked the 3D captions too. It's nice to see something different like that.

My one nitpick with the show was how fast Olivia got over her LSD experience. Her brain was hotwired and she was given a load of hallucinogenics. It didn't seem to throw her off track too much.

Look closely at the seeds and you'll see two human fetuses.

I watched that part when the cellphone blew up the storage facility again; it appeared from the angle that she could see the guy holding the cellphone. The guy was holding the cellphone way off to his side a bit unusually, and the camera view point of the cellphone seemed to be from Olivia's point of view. I think what happened was she saw the guy holding something in a way that seemed a bit unusual and picked up on the bomb detonator before John did and yelled out for him to take cover.

I saw the second episode, although I like the show, it has some moments that make me scratch my head and roll my eyes.
Such as when they go to the warehouse at the end, one lady that knows how to handle a gun and a unarmed "civilian" guy. Couldn't they call for backup on the way there knowing they're dealing with a guy that was part of an experiment to create soldiers who might possibly know how to handle himself, and is a murderer? I also didn't like the jury rigged defibrillator, dumb.
I'd like the show more if they added an agent that can also handle themselves or turned Peter Bishop into more of an agent.
Hopefully there won't be anymore eye rolling scenes in future episodes.

Last nights ep. was by FAR the best of the season. Granted we're only 3 (or 4) into it. But last nights ep. was why I was so drawn to the X-Files.

I love ep. like that!!!! :banana :banana :banana :banana

POTENTIAL SPOILER:

So I don't expect anyone to reply right away, (because Fringe in currently airing) but in the beginning of the episode right before the elevator scene happens there's someone that walks out of the elevator with a hat by his side. (The gentleman is bald.) As he walks out of the elevator, he puts it on and walks out of view. Was that the Observer?!? (I don't have DVR so I can rewind.) Can someone please verify this. That particular part went by so fast, so I know it sounds like a long shot, but still......It sparked my interest.

I've seen two episodes and just can't seem to get into it. From what I have seen I'm guessing it will be science fiction and not supernatural? I usually prefer supernatural stuff over science fiction so maybe that's why I can't get into it.

That being said I really hope Lost doesn't go the Supernatural route when everything is finally explained.

Well the Massive Dynamics chick said something about his deal with some tribe in South America for their soil. But I have a feeling that she will ask him to do something if the team gets to close to MD to stall the investigation or drive it in a new direction away from MD.

Weak episode, possibly the weakest so far. I thought Olivia's rough past was interesting, but I wonder why she hasn't looked for her father in the years since. With her being an FBI agent and all, you'd think it'd be fairly easy for her to do so. If she doesn't like getting those B-Day cards every year, then do something about it. Geez.

The sci-fi plot in this episode was pretty forgettable and the only cool part was in the first 5 minutes.

I just hope Fox doesn't cancel Fringe because I can see this season ending on a cliffhanger. Anyone remember John Doe? (One of my favorite TV series ever.) It too lasted only ONE season on Fox.........and ended on a cliffhanger.....and now I have no closure.....because IT WAS CANCELED!

Read somewhere today they picked up Fringe for the rest of the season, which is kinda unlike Fox...They have picked up Sarah Conner Chronicles as well, which either means they (FOX) are at least trying to finish out the seasons and give the shows a chance :) or they have nothing to replace them with :(

I've seen every episode of Fringe to date and must say, although I thought it had potential at the beginning, I'm finding it less and less appealing. There something... cold about the show. The characters feel a little 2-D to me lacking any real depth. And the constant build up of mystery without ANY explanation... people complain about Lost, but each week something new and unexplained occurs without anything ever getting anywhere. I can defer my 'need-to-know' tendencies for many, many seasons (Lost) if I feel it's worth the wait and I find the characters engaging. Fringe just seems pointless. Mystery for mystery's sake doesn't interest me.

And if John Noble's character says '....it reminds me of an experiment I did back in the day' one more time... :emperor

The apple in the end?

By using the formula that the woman had "worked hard" to solve, the gentleman was able to apply it to manipulate the frequency of sound waves and focus them as such to rearrange the molecular particles of a solid (ie the safe that had the apple locked up.) Thus he could simply put his hand straight through the safe and grab the apple without even unlocking it or opening its door.

To answer the question though, the apple was normal. Just a "test subject."

we'll in the previews for the next episode we now know why the experiment with the device that allowed someone to pull the apple through the safe is was so important.

I really like how they are slowly tying themes together and I have a feeling that much like Lost they are playing for the big picture as opposed to one and done type of season. I really hope this show stays around I think it has some of the best writing on TV.

It will be interesting to see where they take Peter's storyline to, It seems he owe's the mob some money and one would think he would just get the FBI to somehow take care of the debt if it's just that.

I didn't see where the observer was this episode, but one thing bothered me. When the plane went down there was an obvious something seperating from it. I thought it was going to be the monster, but he was at the crash site.

Also, anyone feel like they retconned the relationship just to give it closure and move on? It seemed like it was going in a whole different direction with Mark Valley's character.

The Observer was in the very beginning of the episode, walking across the soccer field.

In terms of Valley's character, John Scott, I think Abrams still has a few "aces" up his sleeve. You also have to take into consideration the fact that Valley is married to Anna Torv (Olivia.) So I doubt we've seen the last of John Scott.

I agree 100%. This show has exceeded my expectations. I enjoy how EVERY detail somehow plays a part in grand scheme of things, no matter how minute it may seem. Blink and you might miss something vital to the plot......literally. (ie The Observer.) And the scary thing is: I think this is the "calm before the storm."

I wonder if Walter really even remembers writing the manifesto. I keep thinking somehow whatever Walter did to Peter will play into this theory of a second or multiple worlds colliding with ours.

Evan

I don't think he remembers writing it at all. I think he just recognized the raised "y" in the type.

Loved how Olivia apparently has power! I am sure Peter will end up having something as well. Seeing as Walter DID write the maniphesto, it only makes sense that what he did to child Peter was treat him with the same Drug Olivia was treated with to prepare him for what was to come.

Last episode during the transaction with the terrorists, Peter saved thier butts by coming up with where he met someone. The one agent then said "Where the hell did he come up with that?" I thought it odd that they made such a big deal out of it. Maybe that was an example of where PETER used his ability.

Also, what was the significance of Massive Dynamic ladies malfunctioning hand? Then later when calling Olivia tells her that the hand is all better. Too random to be added as filler dialogue, and since it was brought up a second time it has to be important.

I have to agree, the mythology of this show keeps getting better and Walter is a fantastic character.

the timing of MD lady letting Olivia know that she was part of the trials suggests that she wanted her to go through the test without knowing - that is if she's also part of the group (which I assume she is).

Oh so you think the hand was just a cop out so that she had an excuse for not digging any deeper! Good call!

I love the huge plot shift last night. You went from believing the Pattern was caused by all of the antagonists so far. When in reality, the antagonists so far (most anyway) might be the good guys trying to fight the pattern/cause of the pattern.

If Olivia can turn of those lights with her mind, perhaps she was causing interference with the MD lady's robotic hand.

Possible, but unlikely since she actually had to try to turn off the lights. Doesnt seem to be a passive ability. I think Dave is right, the MD lady was in on the test (remember talk between MD Lady and Olivia's superior? Telling MD lady she couldnt have Olivia).

This episode wasn't as well constructed as most, but still good - Olivia is a great character - they've always set up that her and Peter have a mutual attraction thing going - it's cool that they've thrown her sister in the mix to make it a bit more interesting.

And the chimera was a pretty cool design - had a little Cloverfield to it as well.

I really am impressed with this show. I wasn't expecting it to become this good. I'll admit that I don't watch Lost, so this is the first time (I think) that I've seen J.J. For those of you who watched this week, it looks like we got an in depth look into the Cortexaphan trials....

And how about the tape that Walter played at the end?!?!?! I was shocked!!!! :horror :horror :horror

And did anyone else think there was something more to those vaccinations that Olivia's niece got? At first, she said "they were dead," and then after receiving them, she said "they were alive again." Maybe, I'm looking too far into it, and it was just a metaphor for an underlying theme, but I'm not convinced yet. I think there may be something more to it than that.

Batty
04-21-2009, 08:53 PM
Great episode tonight. I'm glad they're getting deeper into the mythology.

I'm not so sure the whole thing with the niece's vaccination was coincidental. There could be more to it. By the way, who tells a kid they're going to be injected with something dead? :lol

I think there's a lot Walter still doesn't remember from his past, but pieces are slowly falling into place for him. Him watching the video at the end was creepy.

The Observer was crossing the street tonight.

Darklord Dave

Yep, Walter at the end was very creepy - a great Blair Witch feeling to the video he's watching too. What did little "Olive" do to burn the room like that but keep her corner safe?

Anna Torv is really delivering in this role, and they're giving her so much to do as an actress - I don't find her that attractive, but she's imminently watchable.

Great finale! I'm very happy Fringe has been renewed.

Besides the revelation about Peter and the appearance of Bell, I liked the newspaper with the headline about the new White House and former President Kennedy. I also liked the woman who led Olivia to Bell's office.

I'm pretty much speechless about this finale because it was that good. Give me some time to gather my thoughts and maybe I can make a coherent post. It was THAT good IMO. Absolutely brilliant!!!

My biggest question is the glimpse that we got of the "Peter" back-story. For those of you who watched, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. The implications in that scene were mind-blowing!

I called the Peter twist. Told my wife what I thought was up, and when we eventually got confirmation in that final Walter scene, I was gloating.

This was a great end to the season! They are finally getting deeper into the mythology of the show, and it's getting me hooked.

I had thought earlier in the season that Peter was a clone, but this is much cooler.

And it seems like they're setting up Nimoy to be a recurring character next season?

Funny, I was looking at the newspaper for differences, but didn't see the thing about Kennedy.

Funny how all this ties into Star Trek too. But it seems the parallel universes thing isn't being used at all on LOST where it also might apply. On LOST, "what happened, happened" and there are no offshoots of other realities (yet).

It's the top story on the left. "Former Pres. Kennedy to address UN." It was a lot easier to see in HD.

It also mentioned Len Bias winning MVP for the Celtics.
