ABOUT TIME! YES! Looks like an amalgamation of all three 80's SE's (82,85, and 89). He's got the visor of 85, the baggier pants and boots of 82, and the flash suppressor of 89. Interesting choice. I wish it could have been a pure translation of 1985, but like I said that spandex would have been hard to pull off. I wonder if this means they wanted to do an "ultimate" Snake Eyes and therefore won't be making other versions....

After looking at these again it appears they may have used the Tim Bradstreet version as reference what with the double bicep armbands and kneepads.

Looking like a SDCC item to me. We got this "sneak" today, not a preview like we normally would for an item that we would pre-order the next week. Big difference between the two that many people don't recognize. I'll be highly surprised if we can order Snake Eyes before SDCC.

But the REAL question is: Is the mask a removable material, or entirely sculpted? Same question would apply to Storm Shadow and Cloth Mask Cobra Commander.

Yup, could be a preview along the lines of Vader. Could be awhile before we get to order these. Then again it could be next week.

Kewl, but kind of a bummer.

From the looks of him, the head mask is the 1985 version, but the rest isn't. The upper body looks like aform fitting suit while the pants looks like loose military pants, making the figure look like the movie version.

I was hoping they would give us figure versions of the original figure designs, not made up or movie based stuff.

I wonder if the Goggled "Commando" head would be the exclusive. I really doubt we see any variants in this line as there is such a wide character selection. But of course, with Sideshow's recent track record, we will get the Commando Snake Eyes, the 85 Snake Eyes, a Cartoon Snake Eyes, a Bradstreet Snake Eyes, and the ultra rare international swap meet exclusive Movie Snake Eyes!

Nice to see something from the SSC Joes even if it's not much at all.
Interesting that Sideshow said their GI Joes will be based on the original 80's 3 3/4" figures, yet it's becoming clear they actually based Snake Eyes off of the Bradstreet art.
But it gives me hope that Cobra Commander will be based off of Bradstreet's version because I'd rather have that version then a straight translation of the 80's figure.

I hope Bradstreet is commissioned by Sideshow to provide his interpretations of GI Joe characters as Sideshow's reference material for their figures, and that art will become the box art. Now that would be cool.

My sentiments as well. They really need to look no further than the vintage card art. *Hopefully* the only reason they did it with Snake Eyes is because he has multiple iconic looks and they wanted to combine them. Pretty much every other character except for CC has only one "iconic" version.

I'm really curious about what his exclusive will be. If its his goggled head then I'll probably remove his kneepads to make him look as close to his original art as possible. If its Timber then I'll just leave the kneepads and be content with the Bradstreet look. It looks like he's got the '82 satchel under his right arm. It would have also been cool if they sculpted an extra pointing finger but we see how important it was to SS in Han Solo's case. :lol

Looks pretty cool. Kinda glad its a slightly updated version. Although I loved my early Joes, some of them were pretty gosh darn plain. Also looks like maybe on the new body as its not as scrawny as a Buck.

Cool looking figure. Would have liked the 82 version, but that version was slim on gear. Giving us the 85 version with an Uzi and the satchel charge would be just as good.

Timber as an exclusive would be sweet. Other good add ins:

Alternate scarred head
Photos (the Vietnam one with Tommy (Storm Shadow) and Lorenzo (Stalker) and the picture of his sister with the bullet hole through it.)
The skull necklace that Kwinn wore.

If they do a Cobra Commander next, I sooooo hope he's the battle helmet one, but would not be surprised if it was the hooded one.

I like it. It was actually the last vintage GI Joe figure I ever bought new in a store. I had already sold all my figures in a garage sale a few years before and bought the '89 one for nostalgia (can you believe it!) when I was in high school. I still like '85 the best.

It does look like the Bradstreet art from the cover of G.I. Joe Reborn...looks good in my opinion though I wouldn't mind seeing something directly taken from the 1985 version. However, I think the goal of this line is to merge the character designs with a realistic flair......NOT G.I. Joe Movie flair...but basically something us fans would like to see.

Looks like the sword's hilt is a similar design to Museum Replica's Snake-Eyes sword.

Maybe he comes with all the parts to do that version and V2? Or maybe even V1 and V2? He appears to have a wetsuit-looking shirt so it's conceivable that he has a full body suit and if that's the case the rest of the accessories look like you could do a V2 pretty easily.

Good point...it is possible he can have a removeable visor and you can exchange that the googles that the Version 1 SE had.

Essentially the figure is a v1 'Commando' style body with a v2 'knight visor' head...a perfect compliment since Snake-Eyes' visor is iconic.

I know it's the common view to see the V1 Snake Eyes as wearing black commando BDUs and the V2 to be wearing a black bodysuit (maybe a wetsuit) but looking at the actual figures, they're really not that different.

If anything V1 almost looks more like he's wearing a bodysuit than V2.

He would have to come with a lot of stuff to make a version one Snake Eyes. A couple of things he would have to come with is a commando sweater, different harness, googles, etc. I think they were going for a Bradstreet and their own version of Snakes Eyes.

If I were to even type wingdings for all of foul expressions comming out of my mouth I would still be banned from SSF.

I was really hoping to not have to buy this figure. I am not a G. I. Joe fan, but I do collect other figures than my main lines of Star Wars and LOTR if they are cool enough. But I was cutting back on doing that as well.

But this piece is FAR too cool! It is a must just for the shear cool-factor.

$179.99 would be too much for a Joe I think, especially the first entry. I am going to guess $69-$79....or at least it should be in my mind. the license can't cost as much as SW and they won't have the clothing that the LOTR figs have.

Great first impression. Can't wait to see more pics. Darth Cruel, don't give Sideshow ideas. I would NOT buy it for that price no matter how cool it looks. [WWPhilly] EXCLUSIVE! SIDESHOW REVEALS FIRST GI JOE IMAGE!
Sideshow Collectibles rocks WWPhilly by revealing Snake Eyes

By TJ Dietsch
Posted 5/31/2008

Sideshow Collectibles’ panel offered up a few interesting points, like a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Premium Format Indiana Jones and a look at a few upcoming projects, but the big news was the premiere of the very first figure in their highly anticipated 12-inch G.I. Joe line which will start shipping next year. The first figure revealed is the Snake Eyes you can see here with more to be announced throughout the rest of the year including SDCC.

Body, yes. Equipment, no. If there is one thing the guys at Sideshow know as well or better than anyone else, it's how to make kick-ass 1:6 weaponry and gear.

$179.99 would be too much for a Joe I think, especially the first entry. I am going to guess $69-$79....or at least it should be in my mind. the license can't cost as much as SW and they won't have the clothing that the LOTR figs have.

Price range for the license starts at $79.99... with no idea given on the top-end price. My guess is they will offer him for between $79.99 or 89.99. They won't want to alienate too many people with a high price for the first figure.

I also don't think HT had any hand in the development of the new Promethus body, otherwise Sideshow would have said so. The armored body is the body HT helped with (which Sideshow does state).

It isn't really a version 1, 2, or 3. Closest to the Bradstreet.

Shipping next year fauking blows :duh:duh:duh:duh:duh:mad::mad::(:(

Whoa. Visor: Check. Sword: Check. Uzi: Check. All-Black Suit: Check. That's Snake Eyes all right. I still wish he was a literal translation of a classic design but since apparently this is the only one they're making its a good compromise. I really hope Timber is included! It still could be the exclusive accessory since Timber was really only a part of his '85 look in the vintage line. That might lead SS to believe that the wolf is "take it or leave it."

As good as Snake Eyes looks I really hope there are minimal deviations from classic card art designs. No Shipwreck in a black sweat and beanie please. :nono

Its kind of strange having my "grail" Joe previewed as the first piece in the line. All downhill from here. :lol There's still a ton to look forward though. Cobra Commander (NO BRADSTREET, classic card art please!), Snow Job, Firefly, Zartan, Blowtorch, Scrap Iron, Beach Head, Snow Serpents, Alpine. The list goes on and on. Hopefully Baroness and Scarlett can still look cool on the female buck.

I'll be tempted to remove some of his harnesses to better emulate 85 but to tell you the truth I kind of like the "walking arsenal" look SS has given him. It may not be totally accurate but it still seems fitting to the character to me. I'm glad the special forces commando/ninja doesn't have a huge red tatoo on his shoulder.

There's no way that I can be a completist with this line as I am with others (SW, LOTR, Bond, Indy...) but there are some ones that I'll definitely have to get and this is at the top of that list...

I agree Khev, that I think I'll remove some of his harnesses to give him a sleeker look more akin to the comic (83-85).

Can't wait for more pics and the next few announcements... Major Bludd?

I love it, Snake Eyes is perfect!

And now that I see the whole figure, I can completely understand the updating Sideshow did.
You see Snake Eyes has an Uzi, his rig has to reflect that. So unlike the '82 Commando, '85 visored, or the Bradstreet versions, this one can actually carry extra ammunition for the Uzi.
I like how Sideshow is approaching these. I just hope he has the same wet suit like lower half to match the upper half. So if you want a more faithful rendition, just remove the extra equipment.

Except with GI Joe Sideshow can really fill the gaps in a 1/6 scale Joe collection by releasing a Cobra Trooper/Officer or Crimson Guard early in the line. Both the Troopers and CG have simple designs (nowhere near as complicated as a Stormtrooper or as difficult as an orc) so its quite feasible. Then we could have the option to buy several Cobra troops and have a sizeable collection while they release a new Joe (or Cobra) every 2-3 months.

I expect Cobra Commander to be the next announcement then I hope its one of the Cobra infantry soldiers. As each month passes without another announcement I can just buy another fodder character for Snake Eyes to fight. :D

I would think that SS would focus more on "army building" type figures as there are many people that are willing to buy multiples. I'm guessing the reason they didn't with the SW line and Storm Troopers/Clone Troopers is because they need quiet a bit of R&D to get them up to snuff. As pointed out, not so with the various Cobra troops.

I don't think there will be any problems with likenesses.

I don't think it's that there will be a problem, I just questioned what they would use for resource material since comics and cartoons at that time didn't provide a great deal of facial detail. The artwork on the cardsbacks of the 3 3/4-inch figures, however, has a ton of detail and should be a good resource to draw from. In reality, Snakeyes is an easy first character since he's masked. It's when we get to the Dukes, Baronesses and Scarlets that we know if they're being true to the original ARAH.

SS indicated that "more" figures would be revealed at SDCC, implying two or more. I wonder who the front runner will be after Snake Eyes and Cobra Commander.

I hope they mix it up pretty well between baddies and good guys. I also hope they don't give us just masked characters for a while. I want to see right away their take on classic characters like Shipwreck and Duke.

Wonder what they will do with buff characters? IMO the tall Buck is not acceptible for a figure like Roadblock unless they designed an outfit that covers the scrawny arms. Did they develope a bigbody Prometheus?

Except for Serpentor I really don't see any problem figures like SW (Vader, Stormtroopers) and LOTR (Hobbits, Gimli, Sauron).

I think its possible SSC may charge an extra $5 for Timber similar to what they did with Han and the Mynock. Indeed it would be a big accessory to simply give away.

I fully am expecting Timber to be the exclusive and to be higher than the standard like Han and the Mynock.

I'd be shocked if they did Timber.

Looks very good. If my Dad doesn't get this I will for him. He loves GI Joe.

What do you all suppose? 179.99?

I would be VERY hard-pressed to believe that Hot Toys did not have a hand in that equipment.

VERY happy to be wrong on both counts!

Congratulations Sideshow! What an awesome piece! This may just be the very best 1:6 scale figure ever done. It is at least as good as any done!

If his mask was removeable to reveal his hideously scarred face (from the exposure to the flames in the helicopter accident during the training exercise where he saved Scarlett) then it would DEFINITELY be the best 1/6.

It's still pretty good though.:D

does snake eyes have 2 different outfit in the movie? the SS version looks so far off from the released snake eyes photos.

its a cool figure, though only look like a snake eyes because of the eye shield. otherwise it can look like any black military guy with tons of gears straped on IMO.

He is not based on that POS Snake Eyes from the POS movie.

so what is he based on? is SS's gijoe line a separate entity from the movie?

I have not read anything indicating that this is the movie line. I have assumed that it is based on the toys.

Neither. Its based on the characters, which the toys were based on. Probably lots of Comic and TV show inspiration with maybe some toy throwbacks.

NOT based on the movie.
NOT based on the TOYS.

has it been confirmed there is no sculpted portrait? or are we assuming at this point there is not? mask looks fabric to me, so, it's possible, right? or am i deluding myself? ;p

EVILFACE

No confirmation yet, but I think if there was a fully sculpted face, SS would have included it in the bazillion pics they have on the page.

dedguy

The mask is definitly the same fabric as the shirt... so what the hell is under that mask if not his face? Just a blank head?

creature4000
06-15-2008, 08:12 AM
that would be my bet. Just sculpted enough to give shape... and since he's not meant to be seen without mask, who cares.

Khev
06-15-2008, 09:50 AM
Exactly. There's fabric on his torso but that doesn't mean if you remove his shirt you'll find sculpted nipples. I don't see why anyone would care about what is or isn't under his mask.
