Just watched the trailer and it looks like a cross between Resident Evil/Mass Effect. Game looks badass.
Synopsis: The game's plot revolves around Isaac Clarke, a space engineer who works for the Concordance Extraction Corporation (C.E.C), a company that operates "giant mining ships" throughout the galaxy. His company receives a distress call from the USG Ishimura, a “Planet Cracker” class ship that destroys planets in order to extract valuable ore. Assuming that the ship has had a mechanical failure, Isaac and two other C.E.C employees set out to rendezvous with the Isimura. They soon discover that the ship has been overrun by a hostile alien race. After boarding the ship, Clarke is separated from his party and must battle his way through various hazardous environments to safety.

Is this the official Dead Space game thread? If so, I cannot wait for this game, I am very excited for it. It looks great and seems to incorporate a lot of elements from other franchises. The atmosphere is what really looks great, I hope just walking around in will be as intriguing as it appears to be.
But it is a "new" game so it doesn't really have a history to go back on, but I think it will be well received.

If you consider the sum of the parts of this true LE, it's actually almost worth it especially if your a fan of the art, which I happen to be.
I love Ben Templesmith's work. I'm currently reading 30 Days of Night and Welcome to Hoxford. The art in those comics are great. It wasn't until recently that I found out he was involved in Dead Space. I was actually seeking out the back issues to get a taste of the story to come.

I just preordered from the EA store, you get the artbook free which is a $20 value. If you preorder from Gamestop or EBgames you get a crappy code to get a suit that would cost you a mere $2.69 if you buy it from the PSN store.
So I would rather get a $20 art book free, instead of a outfit in game that can be downloaded for under $3.

Yeah IGN has been pretty hard on everything as of late. But there are a few games that are coming out this month that look really promising and Dead Space is one of them. I’m hoping that the campaign is at least 15 hours long.

The developers said the campaign would be 15-20 hours long, and if you are going for all of the achievements then it definately has reply value.
I plan to start on hard because any upgrades you earn cannot be transferred to another difficulty level. But by starting on hard I can get the hard achievement and at the same time keep all my gear for a 2nd+ run-thru.
The reason they did this is because once you get a lot of upgrades and new gear, you can go through the game much faster and with more ease. So basically you could beat the game on easy (easily) and then take your upgrades and blow through the game on hard. So I can see what they did the change a difficulty and start from scratch thing.

It doesn't just rip off Alien, but a smattering of other classic horror/sci-fi flicks, like John Carpenter's The Thing. But that's why I'm so excited! How often do we get a non-sequel sci-fi horror game that's actually good and isn't Halo or something?
Well, I remember Dino Crisis 3, in which you had to fight mutated dinosaurs in space (or something like that), but that game wasn't great.

I think you can get them the day they're released though if you order from places online--like Gamestop--which by the way, is a much better choice than going to a local gamestop store to buy something.

EB lists ship dates on their website. So usually if it is on the site as the 14th that means the 15th.
Yes, but EB/GameStop actually listed DeadSpace as in stock yesterday and shipped out their copies yesterday to the people that ordered them. But retail EB/GS stores did not want to upgrade to overnight shipping and or change the ship date for the retail stores so they are just getting it tomorrow.

A lot of people are getting pissed about this. And we should, DVD releases are a prime example of how it should be done. The Video Games industry really needs to follow in their footsteps and come up with a new and revised release system.
This ship date stuff is bullcrap, if the game won't be IN STORES until the 15th....then they should just give it a release date of the 15th and not the 14th.

Well, logic would dictate that if you want to release a product on a tuesday, that you ship out the product the friday or saturday the week before and instruct the retailers to hold the product until the official release date. it's really not that hard, stupid EA

It's not just EA.
Waiting an extra day won't kill me, especially for a game like Dead Space. If it were, say, Gears of War 2 or something of that caliber and hype, then yes, I'd expect it to hit exactly on the advertised date and most of the time big games (such as GoW 2) do make those dates...and often at midnight.
It is a bit annoying if you're on the edge of your seat all the time. Watch a movie, read a book, play the other 30 games that came out the previous month. Hey look at me, I sound all preachy.

Don't worry GS already has the game in hand and you can pick it up when they open. Got a call saying the game will be ready to pick up before anytime before noon.
Also some people are reporting their GS told them they got the game but won't sell it until tomorrow; and I am sure that is the case with most. I don't understand.

Don't bother. Of course it varies by store (YMMV), but I already called 3 TRU stores in my area and they all told me Dead Space won't reach their shelves until the 20th or even after. I am keen to trust them because they don't even have Silent Hill: Homecoming yet, a game that came out 2 weeks ago.
However, I did take advantage of the buy 2 games, get 1 free deal and got some Wii accessories cheap. Not a shabby deal even though TRU gets their games extremely late compared to most other B&M stores.

BTW the proper name that the developers call them are Necromorphs.

The comic said something like they only want to go after necrotic, or dead, tissue at first. but i guess when everybody's dead, they go after alive tissue.

I bought Dead Space mostly because I wanted to play a horror game that wasn't a sequel to an existing franchise. It also helps that Dead Space has received good reviews, something that the last horror game I played did not achieve (Silent Hill: Homecoming, which disappointed me a bit).
It's also nice to receive the art book. Pretty snazzy.

That's what bothered me a little bit. I didn't quite like the religious zealot-like overtones that the comic had. I'm sure it's a good story, but I've seen a lot of religious stories like this before, thought it was going to be something a little bit different.

Ignore that, you have to beat the game on IMPOSSIBLE to get the 150 pt. achievement. But first you have to beat the game on hard or I think normal to unlock impossible.....eh I don't think I want to try impossible. I think I'll restart on normal, I am not that far in.

Give us your review when done. In fairness to Silent Hill, it received three bad reviews and a bunch of 80-85% type ones too - two of the bad ones came from OXM (which scored both Dead Space and SH: Homecoming with a 6.5 ironically) and IGN; despite them, it is a pretty darn good game, IMO. It is a Silent Hill game in every way that matters, despite the new AI, improved Combat ability and graphics, it does not reinvent that wheel - you still get weird puzzles, some cool characters with deep, deep issues that you have to discover, etc...if you like that kinda game, it will not disappoint. To me the Monsters were awesome and you get 4 boss battles - the most of any SH title....
plasmid303
10-15-2008, 04:49 PM
SH:H is a good game, don't get me wrong, but after I finished it I felt like I was just tired of Silent Hill in general. I played the original back when it first came out up to this latest installment and maybe I found it disappointing because it didn't reinvent any wheels. It offered changes, sure, but they were small, tentative steps that didn't change SH in ways I felt were significant (made combat fairly easy but still not much fun).
The SH design needs a dramatic shift in the way RE4 changed the RE franchise as a whole. Now, I don't want SH to become an horror action game like RE4, but the formula as it is now is pretty stale. The story isn't going anywhere either. After SH 3, each successive Silent Hill game has been a prequel or a side story that, while giving us little hints and clues as to the true nature and history of the town, doesn't do much at all to progress the story.
Ok, enough about SH from me, this thread is about Dead Space. it's new and It's an original IP which I'm very excited to try. Actually, I'm going to start playing it now - I just got home.

Not sure if everyone is aware, but tha animated versions of the Dead Space comics are not the entire comic - issue 1 had an extra couple of scenes in the printed version that the animated version edited out - and it seemed pretty darned important to me, so be aware of that to!

the game is definately worth it, i'm just glad it dont got (so far) puzzles like in re or silent hill cuz i suck at puzzles, but the comparison is, yes like a cross between RE and Bioshock but in a space station (ishimura) instead of rapture.

Yes dude and that is one of the things that I love about it, you can use Stasis to slow down creatures and Kinesis to move objects and throw enemies. I also like that you can upgrade your armor and weapons and make them even stronger. Give it a rent and I guarantee that you'll want to buy it.

I got it today in the ULE. Watched it during dinner. It's not bad, animation is sort of reminiscent of the old MTV Aeon Flux series to me. It fills in some backstory, but since you pretty much know most everybody has to die, it sort of lacks much suspense in the storyline.
I would give it a C+ (compared to the game's solid A). Watchable, but if you're expecting Akira, Ghost in the Shell or even the Animatrix, you'll be let down.
On a totally different topic, if you aren't playing this game with at least a good 5.1 audio rig, you're missing half the game. I'm 100% this thing will sweep any sound design game awards it's eligible for.

The animated movie covers a different part of the timeline.
The online comics (and the print ones) cover the time period between the discovery of the Marker on the planet and the eventual destruction of the colony. They basically cover the death of the colony.
The Downfall DVD mainly covers the time between the Marker being transferred from the colony to the Ishimura and the arrival of the repair ship with Isaac Clarke aboard, or the death of the Ishimura.

As cool as some of those goodies are, it no way adds up to being worth $150. The 97 page art book is even free with pre-orders of the game. I guess you can't really put a price on some of the items, the value is intangible.

i think it's the Microsoft syndrome, where they are so large and successful people dislike them. plus they are buying up a lot of smaller companies. plus the fact they bought the exclusive rights to the NFL taking out the chance of any competition to madden. people root for the smaller guys and dislike the largers guys.
i don't care how many they buy as long as they just publish them and don't interfere with the developers.

My only issue with EA is with with the Madden. Since they don't have to compete with anyone they can turn out a game like this year that has issues it did or NASCAR. They know they're alone so they don't have to try as hard as they do with a game like DS.

No sister action here. For me, its the fact that they buy up all the other little companies and kill competition and pump out mostly crap games....
Their purchase of Bioware and their hostile takeover attempt of Take Two was the final straw for me - I absolutely hate EA for those kinds of reasons....there had been rumor that Valve was willing to join them, but that ended up being shot down, though Valve did speak highly of EA

Yep, they end up buying great little software/game companies and then use then to churn the same old EA crap. As a company model, they aren't that bad, constantly expanding, buying up rivals; but from the actual gamer perspective, they are the video game antichrist.

Hopefully not--really so far with Bioware it looks like all they've done is add their DRM so hopefully they're not interfering with the game design.

Medium. I started on Hard but then I changed my mind realizing I would have to beat it on hard and then on Impossible (which I hear really is Impossible) to get that one achievement.
There are some parts on Medium that were a pain in the ***, so I am glad I switched back from hard to medium.

I always like to play games on the most difficult setting, so I am sticking with hard for now, it really is a pain in the ***, I can only imagine how hard Impossible is gonna be. :monkey4 I'd imagine, coming by the weapons and the storage achievements were a bit easier on medium, but I figured I'd get that stuff on the second playthrough.

i received my copy of The Official Xbox mag and yep, they gave it a 6.5 and said it "wasn't worthwhile". wow, they are way out in left field on that one.
they did give Fallout 3 a "10" and Fable 2 a "9.5".
I'm looking forward to Fallout 3 after I go through this one twice.

Really! Probably because it isn't exclusive to the 360.

Yeah, I remember while I was playing on hard that ammo was not very abundant. Which made things tuff and I can think of a few parts where hard would have really sucked and been frustrating for me.
and yeah OXM sucks, they ALWAYS give negative reviews.....take OXM's reviews with a grain of salt.

I downloaded that and the scorpion one both. Been using the white elite suit for most of the game but using the scorpion right now.

Beat the game last night (before picking up Fable 2 :rock):
The ending scared the ^^^^ out of me, caught me by complete surprised. I jumped like a ^^^^^. Now as for the story, the ending to me felt incomplete....it felt like not everything was explained. Who exactly was Nicole? Why did the team I arrive with (the girl, forgot her name) want to take the marker? So was that Nicole as a possessed person at the end, or was that still in Issac's head? A lot of unanswered questions. Reading and listening to the logs you find does help explain what happened on the ship; but it does not help in explaining the more personal things about and around your character
Great game, I loved it...highly recommended!
