View Full Version : I've Had My Indy Cherry Popped

So, before today, I was an Indy virgin, which I know is like sacrilege around here :lol, but, growing up, if it wasn't similar to Star Wars or Godzilla, it had little to know appeal to me, and by the time I was interested in Indy, I had no way to watch it without spending a fair ammount of money on the DVD set which is a tough call to make when you don't know how you'll feel about it. So, thankfully to hype Indy 4, they've released the DVDs again, this time making the individual films available so I picked up Raiders of the Lost Ark today.
So, here's what a 25 year old takes from his first viewing of Indy.
1. Indiana Jones himself is a very entertaining character. I found him to be like Han Solo and Captain Jack Sparrow rolled into one. He had the wit and bravada of Han Solo, while seeming to know what he's doing while it looks like he has not clue what he's doing and making it all up as he goes, like Jack Sparrow. Probably why I liked him so much, as I'm a big fan of Han and Jack. The Han Solo in Indy really shows in the way he bahaved with Marion, very much like Han treats Princess Leia.
2. Once again, John Williams adds a perfect score to a film. While I do like the Indy theme music, I acutally found some of the pieces aside from that a bit more interesting. There was a definite connection to Star Wars music; I found some parts of the score to feel like parts of the OT Star Wars scores, and that's natural as they were both at the same point in Williams' career and I'm sure he had favor for certain styles of music and such so his works of the time would share a common sound.
3. Indiana Jones is an adult's Goonies, even though Indy came first, I find there's a strong similarity between the two. Spielberg's participation in The Goonies is even more noticeable now that I've seen Indy.
4. Marion is the cooler LFL chick. Leia and Padme are both beauties of their time and strong women, but neither of them would be having a drink while in the midst of a bar fight :lol She was one cool, tough woman and not a bad looker either, and she still looks nice in KOTCS stills I've seen.
Those are just some highlight points I took away from my first viewing, definitely need to watch it multiple times though, having read through the boards here, I think I focused too much on waiting for certain things and didn't pick up everything else along the way, like I kept waiting to see Wor-Gar's avatar part of the movie haha. I'm sure it's been pointed out, but did you guys realize the guy who plays Dr. Octopus in Spider-Man 2 was the guy in the gave with Indy at the beginning of the movie? Kinda weird, I didn't recognize his voice at first but "his fez was familiar" :lol (Austin Powers joke for anyone that gets that).
Entertaining movie, look forward to catching KOTCS, figure seeing Raiders is enough to follow KOTCS, don't want to spend money on 2 and 3 on DVD when someday I'll just get the Blu Rays. More anxious to get Sideshow's figure now. Oh, and really enjoy a lot of Family Guy references now that I've seen the source material, :lol

BADASS. So glad you finally cracked and watched Raiders. It's only THE greatest action adventure film of all time, it deserves multiple viewings. I've grown to love it more and more over the years. I even wrote a college review essay on it. Indy rocks. Just wait until you see Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade, those are great as well. Especially Temple. :rock

I was actually surprised by that, as much as by today's movies it's a mild scene, it seems edgy for Spielberg in the 80's, but it was quite cool.
Fortunately, I had no expectations walking into this, I really didn't even have a sense of what Indy was about, so I went it with sheer curiousity and was rewarded.

I've got Indy himself on PO, I'll have to judge what others come along as they do. My collection really leans towards the eccentric, outside of treasured characters like Rambo, most of my stuff is either wild Sci-Fi costumes or elaborate old age things like LOTR and Pirates of the Caribbean. With the every rising price of collectibles, I think Indy will be a property I enjoy watching, but outside of Indy himself, I probably won't buy many collectibles.

Also, Temple of Doom actually takes place BEFORE Raiders, chronilogically :lecture

I have to drive almost 40 minutes to find a Blockbuster, that's partly why I've had to wait, and my local town rental placed closed several years ago before I got the urge to check Indy out. Maybe I'll signup for Netflix.

HIGHLY recommend it. I'd say Netflix it. At the very least you would pay the $5 signup and not cancel after a month. And you would be treated to some of the coolest films ever.
Temple is my second favorite, after Raiders. But I am twisted and evil, and it is the most twisted and evil Indy film. The spike room scene is classic enough to justify a viewing. And I GUARANTEE you won't forget Mola Ram.
Crusade is great too, Connery spices that one up a lot. But it's still my least favorite of the bunch. Not enough tomb action for me.

You must live out in the boonies then! No Red Box at a McDonalds? No Grocery Store video store? Any friends?
I personally love Blockbuster.com because I can exchange for a video in the store with one of the enveloped videos, but since you don't have that luxury, Netflix may indeed be the way to go for you.
But you gotta at least see the Last Crusade. Heck, you can't go wrong with a James Bond as Indy's Dad. :duh

It's really hard to believe that someone who is so into Star Wars and other pop-culture movies had never seen any Indiana Jones movie, but at least you're on your way to correcting that. You HAVE to see all three of the original movies before seeing Crystal Skull!
By the way, one of my earliest memories was going to a drive-in double feature of Star Wars (ANH) and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Obviously they were released at different times, so unless I'm remembering the whole thing wrong, they must have had a special showing of Star Wars to go with Indy. Anyway, it was my first time seeing either of them. We arrived late for Star Wars, which was shown first, so for a while I didn't realize the movie didn't start with the droids on Tatooine. The face-melting scene freaked me out as a kid, as did Alfred Molina's dead face just before the boulder scene in Raiders.

I can't wait until you get to the Last Crusade. It is one of my favorite movies of all time, and Sean Connery is the perfect character to go with Indy. Also, I feel it has the best score of them all--I would put the Grail theme in my list of William's best 10 themes ever. It really is a fantastic way to end the series . . .

I talked my little cousin in to watching Temple of Doom the other night. I really would have preferred to start with Raiders, but I knew it would be hard to sell that one without giving too much away. All I had to say was "eyeballs in the soup" and he was fairly well sold on watching it. He really liked it to so I think it'll be easy to get him to watch the other two. He also said he wants to see KOTCS. Oh, and the best part, he liked Short Round and called me Dr. Jones for the night. :lol That was fun.

I only got about halfway through last night, so far pretty good, though Raiders is definitely better to me so far, I found that film to offer something great to watch from start to finish, this one's had some lulls where I've been a bit like move it along. Short Round's great though, I love watching him and Indy, especially fighting over the cards by the fire, of course because of my viewing experience, he'll always be Data from The Goonies to me :lol That's what I said Dr. Jones, booty twaps.
Captain Faramir
05-16-2008, 04:09 PM
Yes! Another Short Round fan! That kid is my favorite thing after Henry Jones Sr.; their relationship is one of the strangest ones on screen and yet, oddly, it works. Indy really does seem to care a lot about him and they have a fantastic parent-child chemistry going on. Plus the kid is dang funny no matter which way you cut it. I always figured Short Round would become the next Indiana Jones and go on to continue the legacy. Not that mangy Mutt Williams they're trying to force on me. :lol
Agent0028
05-16-2008, 06:33 PM

Ok, so I've finished the trilogy tonight. Raiders is definitely my favorite, then Last Crusade and Temple of Doom last. If I saw Temple of Doom as a single movie and it wasn't part of a series, I'd probably feel much different, but being part of the Indy series, something about it felt out of place. There's a certain fun and adventure I felt from Raiders that I thought Crusade brought back to things, but Temple felt much more serious to me and what I've gotten into with Indy is just the sheer wacky fun, almost like Pirates of the Caribbean on land, and I just didn't get as much of that feeling out of TOD as I did Raiders and Crusade. All in all though, a fun trilogy, much different from my childhood estimation of what it was about, and now looking forward to the Sideshow figure and Indy 4.

Yeah, TOD ranks as the bottom of the three Indy films. Mainly cause like you said it just doesn't have quite the same feel as the other two. I think part of the reason I like LC so much is one I saw it in the theaters and I like the Dad/Son aspect of it being so close to my own Dad.

Ya, I'm taking a liking to them very quickly. I'll admit, first time I watched Raiders, I was kidna like ok, not bad, then when I started to watch it again, I really go into it more and it's just a fun adventure, and like Josh commented before, National Treasure movies are like a modern era Indy, I mean they're not too similar, but the core concepts are quite similar and I really like the NT films. Sean Connery was good old Sean Connery in Crusade, he's not a comedian but he can add comedy to some of his roles. It was almost like watching Goodspeed and Mason in The Rock the way Henry and Indy would bicker.

I like LAST CRUSADE fine, but it is quite formulaic and "safe" and is a bit too cartoony at times with characters like Marcus and Sallah. I remember being deeply disappointed in it when I first saw it on Opening Day 1989... to the point where I was actually a bit peeved.
For me, TOD is vastly superior and a much more "honest" Republic Serial send-up to boot. RAIDERS is untouchable.
I would score/rank them...
1. RAIDERS 10.0
2. TOD 7.8 (take some of the Willie screams out and it's an 8.5)
3. LAST CRUSADE 7.0
Conversely, movies like NATIONAL TREASURE and Sommers' MUMMY start at 6.0 and go down from there. :monkey1

I agree NT and The Mummy films are not Indiana Jones and don't touch them. I don't think they're close to as good overall but that being said I think NT and The Mummy films are quite enjoyable. I wouldn't call them cheap knock-offs but a nice tribute in a way.
Just because they're not Indy Carl doesn't make them bad movies. The reason films like LOTR, Indy, SW, etc. are special because they're that good and have resonated with fans.

It's all good, the great thing I find with Indy is there is something for everyone in the series.
My personal taste with movie series' is a sense of unity. I really like it when all the parts of a series feel like they belong, and I just found Temple felt different from Raiders and Crusade so it took just a bit less favor with me. Raiders set a bar with me and the things I enjoyed in it, I found more of them in Crusade than Temple. Who knows though, I'm also a newb to these and have only seen Raiders twice, and Doom and Crusade once, so maybe my impressions will change. Like I said, I felt much different seeing Raiders a second time to the first, so I may change on the other two as well.
I'm really anxious for the SSC figure now though, it's neat having the Hasbro little figures, but I want one that looks like ford and is top notch in quality.

Part of the sense of unity that you might not be feeling as much with TOD is that it isn't supposed to fit neatly between the other two. It's supposed to stand on its own--- and it does.

I wouldn't call National Treasure a knock off of Indy because...
1. It is more puzzle and riddle oriented where Indiana Jones is more adventure.
2. National treasure focuses on American History where Indiana Jones focuses on...I don't know what since you don't get a whole of ancient history, biblical history, or world history with it.
3. Indy is an adventurer and part time academic and Benjamin Franklin Gates is an academic who had two adventures.

Mola Ram was always my favourite INdy villain as well and I can't wait for SSC to really know him out of the park-- I'd strongly consider getting a PF of him as well as I think his complete appearance would look phenomenal in that format.

Raiders Last? Dang Cap! Intersting to see someone like TOD more than Raiders.

Obviously which Indy you like best has everything to do with how old you were when you first saw them.
I can understand why some of you prefer TOD -- it's more "manic" than either Raiders or LC; much more intercutting within scenes too to keep it busy. It seems more like a movie from today in many ways.
But for me, Raiders will always be the definitive Indy film. That's the one I grew up on. It's just more stylish -- inventive for it's time, the use of shadows on Indy alone, plus Spielberg was in top form and the right age to do this kind of film back then. You got to remember, we had just come out of the 70's when this was released. And it still holds up today. So you can imagine how fresh it seemed at the time.

I just came across an interesting article by Charlie Higson, author of the Young Bond Series, on Mi6.co.uk. It talks a bit about how Lucas and Spielberg came upon the topic of Indy (I guess it's true?) and compares Indy to Bond and other big mythy movie characters.
Edit: I guess I should provide the link eh?

Interesting point, because I'm just seeing these now at 25 and I didn't take a big liking to TOD and still like Raiders most despite years of exposure to other films and styles.
I find that Raiders was Lucas and Spielberg and their best as filmmakers, a great score by Williams, Ford's best Indy performance, and the best heroine in the series, which also makes me eager for KOTCS, be nice to see more of the Indy-Marion relationship, I found that very entertaining. I also found, while not as dark as the villains in TOD, the villains of Raiders had a bit of substance to them and weren't superficial like TOD where it was more that they were this evil cult. It's so goofy too, but I love the sound of Indy's whip cracking.

LOL well it's not the first time I've been accused of having odd tastes, but then my heart has never really been in the Indy series--well, except for Last Crusade which is one of my favorite movies ever. My comments are only really useful in the LOTR section I guess. :o

Congrats Sean for FINALLY catching up! And in the nick of time! Ready for KOTCS!
I watched them all as I could this last week, two for the first time in ages. And all out of order, intentionally to see how they sat with me after all this hype.
Raiders is still the coolest to me, but it is simpler. Why I like it maybe.
Last Crusade I watched with Ma, who loved it, so I enjoyed it more than most times. It is still the most emotional one, and it's hard watching Indy be a kid to old Dad, but I like it. And then TOD. And get this, I enjoyed that one more than ever before. Maybe it's just because I hadn't seen it in ages, and the hype has me all worked up, but it felt new and refreshing after ages of hating it. So, I like 'em all.
Glad you have seen them Sean. Welcome to a new world!

I am going to watch RAIDERS just before seeing CRYSTAL SKULL Wednesday night. Two reasons:
1. KOTCS is actually more of a direct sequel to RAIDERS
2. RAIDERS is still the high water mark by which I judge any adventure movie, much less another INDY installment

That's why I bought just Raiders at first, I want to see KOTCS, and figured like Rocky Balboa, RAMBO and Live Free or Die Hard, the first and last films tie to one another in some way, especially since Marion is in Raiders and KOTCS. I just could resist seeing the other adventures of Indy.
Oh, and at the moment, my favorite Indy moment for humor is in the opening of Raiders, when his helper runs off with the idol and Indy jumps and Harrison makes that cocky smile of his then the vines give out and he slips like "oh ^^^^", funny stuff.
Oh, and now that I've seen Indy, I find Seth MacFarlane must love LFL movies because I'd say Indy references are second only to Star Wars references in Family Guy, so many bits are now funnier and make more sense having seen Indy, like when Peter uses the Staff of Ra to find his little black book of girls' phone numbers :lol

Lots of INDY references in "The Simpsons" through the years as well, including a send-up of the opening RAIDERS sequence that is just brilliant. Homer as both a naked, angry native as well as the boulder just kills me. :lol

Not sure I've ever seen that, I'll have to hit YouTube later, that does sound hillarious.
I still think my favorite spoof at the moment is from the Family Guy movie with Stewie as Short Round.
"Don't touch anything!" "Okay Dr. Jones, I no touch anything."
"Oops." "Help, Indyyyyyy!" "Lady only here cuz she humping director."

Y'all have to admit though . . .the early 80's was one of the best times to be watching movies: ESB, Raiders, Conan, Blade Runner. Wasn't that the time of Porky's as well, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High?

I don't think there is going to be another new DVD release of the original films this fall when CRYSTAL SKULL hits. If there is any kind of box set it will just be the same discs that came out last week packaged with the new CRYSTAL SKULL DVD.
All 4 will be coming to Blu-ray at the same time this Fall, however.

Figured the Indy thread could use a little more upbeat conversation and I'm sure this will bring a smile to some Indy fans' faces.
Since the DVDs came out on 5/13, I've now watched Raiders 3 times, Temple 3 times, and shortly will be watching crusade for the 3rd time.
These movies are a lot of fun to watch, and the theme John Williams came up with, in my opinon, goes down as one of his most iconic pieces, along with the JAWS theme and some of the specific pieces from Star Wars and Jurassic Park.
